I am looking to create a People entry for Gaven Kuldyir, rat exterminator, so as to make a definitive link for him for my recently completed city rat entry (and for the already complete vilerat entry). However, all that is known of him is when he died in 223 bS.

Can someone point me to a timeline where I can reference the current year and work backward for his life? 223 bS might be a year ago or a hundred years ago for all I know... undecided

Thanks!

Yay, a People entry! :)

Well, I might advise to have a look in the History section a bit, Azhira, just to get an idea where we stand... It's the icon with the swords (third icon in the second row).

Currently we live in the year 1668 a.S. (next year, 2009, it will be 1669 - see the pattern?). A.S. means "After Santhros". So 223 b.S. (before Santhros) would be still before the unifcation of the kingdoms! If such a date has been mentioned on the site somewhhere, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is final, though, so you could still adjust it in case it isn't referenced more often.

Oh wow...that would be like writing about Ghengis Khan or something...223 bS is way too far back. I was hoping for something more recent. I've not found any reference to Gavin except in the vilerat entry and it never lists his death at 223 bS. I may adjust it to fit in somewhere more recent.

For the sake of pedantry - erm, that is to say "absolute precision" - is that "They'd never last, Coren" or "they'd never last Coren"?

A question related to Azhira's: When does the "documented history" - or at any rate the "well-documented history" of Sarvonia begin? Roughly around the ascension of Santhros to the throne or several centuries later? I assume at least several hundred years before the establishment of the Compendium?

Well, if you mean on site, it stops at the ascension of Santhros!  lol  However, I see there is some stuff from the last Santhmoot which is meant to get on site sooner or later.

The Serphelorians, alarmingly, have history back to the Mynians (12,000 b.S. shocked, but that is more like legend now than history.

Personally I am hoping to have proper history starting with Santhros (they were pretty decimated by the time he turned up), but with well-known folk-history covering their Golden Age and deterioration (~8000 - 3000 b.S.).

The problem I have with the Serphelorians is that even if they are in enough disorganisation to not write anything down or to lose it all, there are still two other tribes of humans who might well have recorded it, and at least as many sets of elves!  I should be able to manage a few periods I don't have to write anything for though  sigh   :P

So, I would say that 'real' written, recorded history would generally start a few centuries before Santhros, depending on the formative events of the tribe.  Obviously that will make it vary greatly - f.e. the Erpheronians will start much earlier, and the Serphelorians will only start writing again after Santhros.

That's interesting :)

For Western Nybelmar the best documented period is 4000-1500bS (more accurately, the "best": ca3000-1600) owing to the obsessively detailed annals, records, inter-state correspondences and taxation lists kept by the Krath Empire. In many instances, we get an insight into what was happening in Eastern Nybelmar - which was undergoing a "dark" age - at the time only from records kept by Krath.

The period between ca 1649BS (Year of Darkness) - current age is the LEAST clear era in Western Nybelmar history: After the fall of the Krath Empire and the sealing off of the Shar Peninsula, the continent divided into smaller, disordered states battling one another. Not much time or interest to keep a diary I am afraid...

Sounds very cool.... I wish I could keep everything in my head at once like that!  I am currently working in Excel with the dates I already have, trying to come up with something...  I will have to ring your respective bells when I have something worth looking a!

It's actually quite easy - when one thoroughly masters the subtleties of the maxim "Quia Ego Sic Dico"(1)

Or as Miraran once noted: "Uhm.. well.. that makes for a total of 1 corrections.. Of course it helps that you never needed to reasearch anything for this entry, as you made every related piece yourselves.."

(1) Making Money by Terry Pratchett:

"Is he [Lord Vetinari] allowed to do that?"
"I think that comes under the rule of Quia Ego Sic Dico."
"Yes, what deos that mean?"
"'Because i say so', I think."
"That doesn't sound like much of a rule!"
"Actually, it's the only one he needs."

I would be delighted to go through the drafts Grunok - although I don't know how much help I will be given that my knowledge of Santharia is quite limited. BTW could you IM me instead when you're ready?

Hi, dear Arti and other developers!

This year I am in China and cannot use any Google services including YouTube. For this reason I stopped uploading new Nepris videos. I can also not read any comments there.

It just crossed my mind that this information might be useful to you.

Cheers
