I'm not sure where this goes. so I'll put it here.  Hope that's okay!

This is a New Santhala children’s skipping rhyme.

(Everybody knows what skipping or jumping rope is, right?  I think that's a pretty universal thing, but I  also know that not all of us are native English speakers, so if you need an explanation, please say so.)

Any name may replace "Johan", and often does if the little girls are trying to irritate some boy.

Johan, Johan, wanted sweets
From a baker stole some treats
Broke the bolt and broke the locks,
Johan, Johan, in the stocks!

Johan, Johan, stole a pig
It was not so very big
But the Watchmen did him take
A example for to make.

Johan, Johan, what’s to do?
With a rope they will hang you
From a gallows, you poor thing,
How long will they let you swing?

(skipping pace very fast)

One, two three…(until skipper stumbles)

If anybody thinks this is too gruesome or nasty for a child’s skipping rhyme, go research some real ones and then talk to me, okay?  I skipped rope as a little girl to some pretty awful ones; this is quite typical.

Oh, I know what a skipping rhyme is - and they can be pretty gruesome: One, Two – Freddy’s coming for you Three, Four – Better lock your door ... Now that's a classic every teenager surely has heard! lol Also I think that certain skipping rhymes are indeed somewhat gruesome or nasty, mentioning the boogeyman and stuff like that you bring up, Alysse. This seems to be part of the concept for some reason. And I guess this work is quit ok in this respect from my point of view. It also expressed some medieval cruelty, so that works for me.

We also have a page on counting ryhmes, so it could be added to that page, maybe we should change the title to "Counting and Skipping Rhymes" then to cover all those children-related rhymes.

And here's another.  People are probably going to tell you not to encourage me after this...

Poor Nell, she fell
Right into the wishing well
In the little elven dell
Soon it will begin to smell.

EEEEEUWWW! (the louder and more piercing a shriek this can be, the better)
Run away!  (skipper begins skipping very fast)

(howls with laughter)

Another verse for the first rhyme (perhaps in the middle, so the punishment progresses?)

Johan, Johan, wanted sweets
From a baker stole his treats
Broke the bolt and broke the locks,
Johan, Johan, in the stocks!

More, more!

Children are like that, Coren.  Can't you imagine little girls gleefully chanting something like this while skipping in the street?  Kids are just like us, only without the veneer of good manners and polite social conventions.  As Art says, it's part of the concept--because children LIKE gruesome, disgusting stuff.  I have repeatedly heard "Eww, gross!"  from children, while their expressions and tone of voice indicate intense delight in the "grossness".

@Judy:  Hey, that's good!  Maybe it should be the first verse, just to indicate the progression of ever-worsening crime and punishment.  I'll add it to the original post.

Oh, I definitely agree with you Alysse. In my experience, children - especially teens - tend to be among the more cruel specimens of the human race :P

Excellent work btw!

PS: I especially like the one about the well!
