Bawdy tavern song--sorry, no music!

A popular bawdy tavern song from Southern Sarvonia, originating somewhere in the province of Sanguia. Sometimes attributed to Gebl the Brownie.

As I walked out late in the morn, t’was on a Harven day,
And all the farmers working hard, to reap the summer’s hay
I saw a fair maid running, her skirts in disarray,
A-fleeing from a Cattrel hound, she could not get away.

I shouldered up my sturdy staff and to her side I sped
And as the hound approached us two I struck him ‘cross the head
Then he did flee the scene a-yelping, like to raise the dead
The maid did sink into my arms and followed where I led.

“Oh, sir,” cried she, “I thank you so, that you did make him fly!
With such a staff, so long and hard, the which you did apply,
So skilfully…” “Well, now my dear,” I gently made reply,
“Such skill comes from experience, and much of that have I.”

I brought her in the field to rest and sat her in the wheat.
I chafed her hands, I kissed her lips, that were so very sweet,
So quickly to my touch she warmed, from head to dainty feet,
That soon the pretty maid and I with Etherus* did meet.

( This stanza, depending on the intoxication levels of the crowd, is usually followed with enthusiastic cheers, whilst a brief instrumental is played.)

So, in the field we laid a while and there did sport and play,
And as to our conclusion there, well, this much will I say,
Although it was a maiden fair I led into the hay,
No maid did leave the field with me, though two folk walked away!

*As Etherus is the god of Lust, the inference should be obvious here.

Edit: I added another verse to hint more strongly at the bawdy nature of the song. A few drinks and any references to one's "sturdy staff" become hilarious anyway...

Yeee-ha! A 'I walked out' song from the expert on bawdy... what more could we wish for? Well, perhaps the music, but that might have to wait till we get together next summer, eh, sib-dear? I can hear a tune for this already in my head...

One quibble - do we have wheat, named as such, or are we still struggling along with Golden Rain? I've been meaning to ask the next newcomer who wants a plant to do some more grains, as we seem to be short of this essential foodstuff...

Love the rhyme scheme and dancing rhythm - just right for this piece! :applause

Now there's a reputation to have. lol

Thank you for your fulsome praise of my efforts. It occurred to me that we could use a few more of this type of light-hearted type of tune, which (despite your comment regarding my expertise

) really isn't a typical style for me. My love songs are usually a bit more intense, not quite so...so...rollicking.

I'd love to work on it with you, though, that would be fun. This type of song does require some accompaniment, and we've collaborated for Santharia before quite successfully, haven't we?

Any other thoughts, comments, suggestions? I'll probably try to tighten up some of the language a little, maybe see if I can work in another Santharian reference. I wasn't sure about "wheat" either, but I needed the rhyme (!) Perhaps I can adjust that...have to think about it a bit.

*haha* Now why are all those bawdy songs/entries we have on the site are actually written by women? I see a pattern here!

This one's quite entertaining and even more so with some beer intoxication at hand, and it also has at least some Santharization in it. The incursion of some slang also is a good choice here, makes it sound like the lads are singing it in the tavern

The intro could be Santharized a bit better perhaps, giving it a clearer location or something, but otherwise I like it very much, Alysse!

I didn't realise you accepted 'bawdy' stuff! Oh boy, have I got some songs for you!
As a biker, I have many friends who epitomise bawdy, some of whom are quite talented in the fine art of bar-room poetry.

I'll start you off with a 'safe' one.

JAKKA’S TAVERNA

I met you, in Jakka’s Taverna,
You looked so mournful and sad,
So I said with a wink, “Let me buy you a drink,
And perhaps things won’t seem so bad.”

You ordered a large R’unorian brandy, then Vhodkha, then wine to take home,
