Orcish love song--from the Osther-Oc tribe.

This piece has been loosely translated from the Kh’omchr’om, since most of the subtlety and nuance of the lyrics are conveyed by gesture.  When sung in the original, it is almost more of a dance than a song.


Her beauty renders me helpless;
I am like a babe newborn.
Her eyes defeat me as the noblest warrior
I am made forlorn.

Her tresses tumble like the nightfall,
Her fangs are sharp as any sword,
She surpasses every female
Of our worthy horde.

She is strong and she is lovely
Worthy of a noble male
I shall strive to reach that honour
For her, I’ll not fail.


What do you think?  Not typical orcish stuff, I know, but orcs can fall in love too.

Well, I thought about that when I was writing it, and came to the conclusion that it would depend on which orcs you're talking about.
The Losh-Oc--probably not,  their females are only important as possessions and child-bearers.  But I suspect that the Osther-Oc would have to win their females  by wooing them, since they have equal rights, and certainly, it would be more pleasant even for a Ashz-Oc or Rhom-Oc if his mate was fond of him and liked him.  So I felt that some orcs probably would go to a little effort to charm the female they chose.  Does that seem reasonable?

I tried to write it as I thought an orc would express it, in terms of strength and weakness, honour and worthiness, since those are vital concepts to them.  Although their concept of honour is different from that of a human, they still live and die by it.

Thank you, Azhira, that is my aim.  Now if we could only get an artist or two on board to make some "nicer" pictures of orcs--baby orcs playing with an immense warg, crawling over it, pulling its tail--that sort of thing, we'd be well on the way to achieving our goal.

Yeah, I guess we should be careful and associate such orcish lyrics only to very specific tribes, and that should also be mentioned in the introduction to this piece. Otherwise one could get the wrong impression, because this is still rather untypical of orcs. Some tribes consider rape a good thing (e.g. during the invasion into Southern Sarvonia) and care little for their women, seeing them only as means in order to get to their progeny.

For a more civilized tribe of course (could also be e.g. a Volkek-Oshra orc) this is feasible and the pictures used in this poem fit nicely to the way orcs are, but we just need to be clear of the limitations of this orcish lyrics concept I guess.

Okay, I attributed it specifically to the Osther-Orc tribe.

I don't plan to write masses of orc love songs, it was more of an exercise to see if I could do it, and then I was curious as to what the rest of our Dreamers would think of it.  I know that the Losh-Oc, for instance, would no more think of writing love poetry to their mates that we would consider writing a love note to a pet hamster.  And the Ash-Oc and Rhom-Oc, while possibly treating their mates a little better, do not consider themselves under any restrictions requiring kind or charitable behavior when it comes to females of other races.   So don't worry Art, I won't make a habit of this.  :D
