technically, this is not an original creation, it's a semi-translation and santharisation of an old lulaby my grandmother used to sing.. just because i felt like singing it today. :)

So i present to you, santharia's version of Annie M.G. Smidt's "Stekelvarkentjes Wiegenlied"

"Riccio's Lulaby"

Su-ja su-ja Pricklypig, outside there shines the moon,
You're just a little Riccio, but listen to this tune,
You're just a little Riccio, i'm sure you understand that,
The Shingar is a spotted, and the Lingra is a striped cat.
And good old aunty Kuatu has a tail of fluffy fur,
But you are covered in sharpened pins, and harm they will deter.
And harm they will deter.

Sleep my little Pricklypig, and you'll grow big and fat,
So you'll become a big Riccio, just like your mom and dad.
The Thunderfoot has a long trunk, and the Moss bears bear sharp teeth,
The Haloen has couloured feathers, a-like a splendid wreath,
And our uncle Rosesnake has a pretty-coloured hood.
But you are covered in sharpened pins, and that is just as good.
And that is just as good.

Su-ja su-ja Pricklypig, It's getting oh-so late,
You are the prettiest Riccio that Jeyriall could create.
The Barn Cats carry whiskers, and that makes them purr all day long,
The Strata Cow has horns, and the White Hart has a proud prong,
And your cousin Oloy, in brown velvet he is clad.
But you are covered in sharpened pins, and one day you will be glad.
Yes one day you will be glad.

Oh, and i found some kids singing the dutch version on YouTube, right HERE

This is ADORABLE, Mira!

I feel so flattered...my Riccio/Pricklypig has inspired TWO children's songs now.

With all the Santharian references, Mira, it might as well be an original creation, don't you think?  That must have taken some work.

Now all we have to do is get Gean in here to translate the melody into a MP3 file with original Santharian instruments.....    and then I promise to sing it!

This IS adorable.  Something about the two last lines in each verse is so delightfully poignant... I love it.  Bravo, Mira!

Minor edits for spelling and making the second verse fit in with the rhiming pattern (the haloen line was one syllable short)

edit->argh.. it still is!

editedit-> no, it's not, its pronounced ha-lo-en!

I heard that. Errr... I've gotta perform in the afternoon, Deci is still waiting for his Uri of Marmarra... butta, this is Annie M.G. Schmidt in Miraran edition. If we make proper mention of the original 'source of inspiration', this shouldn't a real problem, right?

Everybody should read Annie M.G. Schmidt, but I'm not sure if there are any proper English translations... Google search proved that there's a translation of poetry called 'Pink Lemonade', available at your local Amazon.com :) Go get it... now!

And here's the first sing-a-long version. More to come when I've had some sleep. I know some of those harp chords are not 'plucking' right (there's one or two of those), they'll be changed tomorrow do. Plus a nice oboe thingie that's in the original too. Like those chords :)

Whoops, I missed a line in the previous version. Fixed that now. We have two versions: one with french horn melody, one without it and added notes in the english horn second voice. I've also added a little reverb and a third couplet to the latter one, so that you can sing the whole song. Mira and Judy can say which second voice they like best. The first resembles the original, the second one is Geanized. Have fun :)

Certainly no chance of political tactical voting with this one, eh?

Will be on it tonight!  I'm sure I'll vote for the Geanization anyhow, though..... :)
