Nymersian Refuge

Established in 1440 a.S by Delilah Theraway, the Nymersian Refuge for Women and Children (often just called “The Refuge” or “The House” or even, less often, “The Manor”) has since helped serve hundred, perhaps thousands, of homeless, lost, and abandoned women and children. A landmark several strals east of Nymersys, the manor itself is far older, built by the Landgraven Chetain Ferigrad at around 1100 a.S, near the end of the Age of Rebuilding. Since its original construction, more has been added to it, supposedly as the Ferigrad’s fortune and family grew, though it has now not undergone much changed for several hundred years.

Location: The Refuge resides several strals of the city of Nymersys itself, in the province of Nymeran in Santharia. It resides on the southern side of the Teiphra river and within view of the grand mountains to the north and southeast. Although the building is well out of the city, the inhabitants of the Refuge have the advantage of the close distance, and many of their foods or necessities are purchased there.

Purpose: Since the time Delilah Theraway founded the building, the function has remain the same: to provide a home (usually temporary) for homeless, lost, and abandoned women and children. Unmarried women baring children find a safe place to bear their children and recover. Those whose husbands or families died in plague or fires often come to the Refuge. It is well known, especially in Nymersys, that if a child is unwanted, the Refuge will try to take in it if it can, and provide for it. Each story is different, but the Refuge has always been open and well-respected for its charity.

It is the Refuge’s creed that no women in need should be turned away, and although most of the women and children there are human, those of other races have also stayed there. Most of the elves the home has had came by way of the Black Butterfly Rovers, who stop by every few years. Those unable or unwilling to keep up with the constant travel are eagerly welcomes into the Home where their experiences and knowledge benefit all the other women. Many gnomes, particularly Daran gnomes, have found there way to the Home and often became wonderful educators. Only a few hobbits have ever come to the Refuge. The most beloved hobbit arrived after a heavy storm, when her young husband died because he had chosen a hill for their home that was too shallow, and had buried him when the soaked earth made the ceiling give way.

As mentioned, the stay at the Home is meant to be temporary. The women who come there usually only stay a few years. Many of the younger women find good husbands in the nearby towns. Others become priestesses at shrines both near and far. Some find jobs as schoolmarms or seamstresses, healers and cooks.

Since the original founding in 1440, the Refuge has expanded into other parts of Santharia, and small homes near cities are purchased or donated by the city itself for the benefit of the Refuge, where members stay and help women and children in the surrounding city.

Functioning: The Nymersian Refuge for Women and Children is run by a headmistress, the first of whom was the Refuge’s founder Delilah Theraway, now officially called the Mother of the House. She makes sure all the women are taken care of and help with the management of the building. She also helps arrange marriages or jobs for women and children for when they leave. Because of her title, the women often affectionately call each other “Sister.” Although originally the term was used exclusively among those in the House, the title caught on, and now those who see these women in the market or visit them at the home call them “Sisters.”

The original and continuing goal of the Refuge remains to provide a temporary home for women and children. When a woman first comes to the refuge, she is given time to rest and relax, but after a period, is expected to take part in the management of the Refuge. All women help to maintain the Refuge, and the building makes much of the income in needs to provide fresh food and other necessities for its members by selling cloth made by the women who stay there. Women learn (if they don’t know already) how to spin thread, dye cloth, and sew different types of clothing. Most of the women do this along with other chores, such as laundering, cooking, cleaning, etc. The Refuge also has gardens in a central courtyard where women may grow and learn how to use various herbs, and instruments such as harps, flutes, and lutes are also available. Many of the skills learned at the Refuge provide often disheartened women with a feeling of purpose, and learning new skills often provides new opportunities for them once they leave.

While children are expected to contribute to the maintenance of the House, they are also given time to play and go to school, sometimes with other women. The educated women teach others to read and write, which often increases their pupils’ chances to find work outside the Refuge. Many of the children, especially boys, are sent to foster homes, to families where the wife cannot conceive. These boys not only receive the benefit of a good family, but the eventual inheritance of land or fortune. This also allows the Refuge to maintain its strict rule against men in the House. If a boy is not adopted by his 11th year, he is sent to live in the guest house or allowed the opportunity to travel to Nymersys or another city for work.

The girls born in the House or soon before their mother arrives there has the opportunity of staying with the benefit of receiving a moderately good education and a good chance of finding a suitable husband in the surrounding town. Before marriage the Headmistress (or Mother of the House) must approve of the young man. Many of the women in the house hold men in disfavor, and so any potential husband is looked at carefully before marriage is approved.

Since the original founding, the House has expanded, usually through the sponsorship of dukes or gravens, or sometimes even city magistrates who donate small houses or cottages near the city. A collection of about a dozen women stay at this house and provide service to the city; not only offering shelter for women and children, but sometimes running eateries for the homeless or starving. The expansion first began under Mother Renna Cloveld, who convinced a graven to donate a cottage just outside Voldar. Since then, the houses, called “Red Homes” due to the red dress and tunic the sisters use to identify themselves, have multiplied, expanding to cities such as Milkengrad, Thyslan, Jernais, and Salsair. The movement south is a slow one: the southern-most Red Home resides in Elsreth.

Red Homes are typically overseen by older women who help take care of the young. Young women are often encourages to become Red Sisters and live at these homes, as they provide them with new opportunities for work and especially marriage.

The Red Homes, and the Refuge itself, is protected by guards provided by gravens, dukes, and in the case of the refuse, even the Thane himself.  In 1446, Delilah managed to acquire guards from the local graven, whose wife was her aunt. However, in 1594, the Thane chose to honor the good service of the Nymersian Refuge and established an order called the Red Guardians of the Sisterhood. This order, originally containing only a few dozen men has greatly expanded to an order of nearly 100, with Red Guardians there to protect the Red Sisters wherever they be. The relationship between the Order and the refuse has provided many very successful marriages.

Description: The Nymersian Refuge for Women and Children is an old and very beautiful manor building surrounded by a fence that encircles a property nearly a stral in diameter. Most of the property is open land where the Refuge lets graze their goats and sheep, and where they keep flocks of chickens. There is a small barn at the very eastern part of the property, and a chicken coop nearby. The barn and coop have been renovated many times since the opening of the Refuge, though the wooden structures are hardly seen from the western entrance.

The western entrance, the only entrance into the Refuge, follows from a path leading out of Nymersys, and runs through a gate and to the very front door of the building. The manor itself is made of stone, with many old vines climbing up the walls, encircling the windows and climbing up the chimneys. The building is two stories with an open courtyard in its center. The western portion of the house, which faces toward Nymersys contains, in its lower portion, spinning rooms along with rooms for dying and sewing. The upstairs holds the music room, with various instruments, all which have either been donated or created by the those who reside there. The classroom also resides here, where both women and children receive lessons in, at the least, reading and writing. The classroom has a few books, all which have been donated. This top room also has a small room for the Mother of the House where she sleeps and works. A windows looks out to the west so that she may see what people are traveling on the road. During the winter, this secluded room is often abandoned to sleep with the other young women for warmth.

The north and south sides of the manor are thinner, usually with pathways and small rooms on the bottom floor and mostly storage facilities on the second floor. Here is stored, not only for clothing to be sold at market, but also flour, salt, and other things needed to sustain the Refuge. Sometimes toys are put away here for children, or personal belongings.

The most eastern part of the manor contains the kitchens, dining, and living quarters. The downstairs contains a large hall where all the women and children sit and eat together. The northern side of the manor contains the kitchens, where a ten of over a dozen women cook and prepare food for all the women in the House. The upstairs contains the living quarters, with many small rooms containing beds that women usually share, typically 3 or 4 to a bed. Smaller rooms provide space for the ill or pregnant women in the house.

The courtyard in the center has a large tree in the center that provides shade on hot days and shelter from the rain and snow in the winter. The outside, along the northern and southern walls, are shrines to various gods and goddesses; the two largest and most popular of which are Jeyrial and Baveras. The temples were put in during the early years of the Refuge, and have not changed much. Modest shrines, they have little save for statues of the gods and goddesses they represent. Because water must be pulled up from a well, there is no running water to provide a fountain for any of the shrines, and times has chipped away many of the outer parts of the shrines. However, these shrines are well-loves and well-used by the residents of the manor and the guest house.

The courtyard bustles with activity on most days. Here, children play with one another while some women garden and prune, pulling weeds or plucking herbs to use in medicines. This is where most of the laundry is done and hung up to dry on lines crisscrossing the courtyard, tied around one of the columns that holds up the overhand on the western and eastern sides and then wrapped around one of the large branches of the middle tree. Festivals are sometimes held here, and it remains a place for socializing and enjoying.

Outside the manor, to the north, is the guest house, also made of stone and covered in vines. Although not as large as the manor, it is certainly not small. Two stories in height, it contains enough bedrooms to hold both the boys too old to live in the manor and most of the local Red Guardians. The bedrooms reside mainly on the second floor, while the bottom has a small kitchen and dining area. The residents here, all men, are led by the Champion of the Red Guardians, typically a man of older years who not only manages the guardians, but also serves as a mentor to the younger men, many of whom become Red Guardians themselves. The men living in the guesthouse, when not on duty or busy with chores, hunt in the nearby woods for deer and rabbits for themselves and the women in the manor.

On the southern side of the manor is the graveyard, overlooked by two worn statues of Queprur at one end and Eyasha on the other. Together, they look over the cemetery where all women and children who die in the manor are buried, including past Mothers of the House. Several times a year, the women in the house take time to remember the others who have come before them.

History:
1438: Death in Ferigrad Manor
All members of the Theraway family living in Ferigrad manor die of illness, leaving Delilah Theraway the sole inheritor to not only the graven title, but the fortune of Theraway. After forfeiting the graven title to her aunt and her husband, she assumes control of the Ferigrad manor, spending two years renovating it.
1440: Establishment of The Refuge
Delilah Theraway opens the Nymersian Refuge for Women and Children, helping the lost, abandoned, and needed women and children in the city of Nymersys. Throughout her term as Mother of the House, she travels to nearby cities such as Weyring and Ishmarin and Astran searching for those she can help.
1446: Guards for the Manor
After talking with her aunt and her husband, the local graven, she manages to get guards for the manor. However, the guards do not yet live on the property, and ride from the graven’s new mansion in the north to the manor.
1489: Theraway to Grandale
Following the death of Delilah Theraway, Celia Grandale becomes the new Mother of the House. She encourages the use of music and under her, The Refuge produces many talented musicians.
1520: Grandale to Cloveld
Following the death of Celia Grandale, Renna Cloveld becomes the new Mother of the House. Her past experiences visiting many of the towns in Santharia lead her to hekp establish Red Homes in parts of Santharia.
1543: Red Home established in Voldar
After continual inquiry and persuation, Cloveld manages to convince a local graven to donate a cottage near Voldar from which needy women and children can gain help and assistance. In many cases, women and children are sent back to the Refuge. The cottage is later expanded in 1578 and again in 1608 to better serve the city.
1558: Red Home established in Milkengrad
Seeing the success of the Red Home in Voldar, Cloveld manages to collect the money to buy a house in Milkengrad. The cost of purchasing is later relieved by a donation from the local magistrate in 1565 for the kind charity and service of the Red Sisters. This Red Home is renovated in 1586, and expanded in 1634.
1561: Cloveld to Shelden
Following the death of Renna Cloveld, Nemone Shelden takes over. Shelden expands the activities of the Red Homes to providing meals for the homeless and sick in 1563. The reputation of the Red Sisters expands.
1572: Red Home Established in Jernais
Nemone Shelden continues to establish Red Homes in Santharia. A home in Jernais was donated to the Refuge by an old woman who came to the Refuge following the death of her husband, and after expanding it, the house becomes a working Red Home for the Sisters. The house is renovated in 1601, and expanded in 1645.
1576: Shelden to Feriel
Following the death of Nemone Shelden, Feriel takes control. Having been left at the Refuge as a child, abanadoned because she was crippled, Feriel never received a last name. However, despite her physical ailments and challenges, she overcomes them to become a wonderful spinner and harp-player. She becomes a powerful spiritual leader for all women. She spends her term renovating existing Red Homes and expanding the reputation of the Refuge.
1590: Feriel to Fergos
Following the early death of Feriel from her own physical ailments, Meriell Fergos becomes the new Mother of the House. Her confidence and forward ways help her benefit the Refuge. She manages to renovate many of the old Red Homes, along with establishing new ones.
1594: Establishment of the Red Guardians of the Sisterhood
After Meriella Fergos bids the Thane of Nemeran, he establishes a new order of knights: The Red Guardians of the Sisterhood. These men, noble and accomplished fighters, guard the Red Sisters both at the Refuge and wherever there is a Red Home. At the manor, they are given the guesthouse to share with the young boys of the women.
1616: Red Home in Thyslan
The local graven donates a large cottage near Thyslan to the Refuge, and it is quickly turned in a Red Home. This Red House is later renovated in 1627, then expanded in 1652.
1618: Red Home in  Salsair
In response to his rival’s charity of donating a cottage to Thyslan, another graven donates a larger cottage near Salsair. This rivalry manages to generate money for the Refuge. This Red House is never expanded, but renovated twice; once in 1633 and again in 1657.
1620: Red Home in Astran
Meriella Fergos uses funds to purchase a small house in Astran, which, despite never growing very large perhaps due to its closeness to the Refuge itself, benefits the local community. It is renovated once in 1660
1624: Fergos to Moongale
Following the death of Meriella Fergos, Shyla Moongale, originally of the Black Butterfly Rovers, takes over. She makes visits to many of the existing Red Homes and helps to renovate and expand the existing buildings.
1643: Moongale to Delwic
Following the death of Moongale, Maile Delwic takes over as Mother of the House. Like her predecessor, she renovates and expands some of the older Red Homes, though tends to focus on the security of the sisters both at the Refuge and abroad. Under her, a fence is erected around the property, and the size of the Red Guardians is expanded.
1659: Delwic to Verigrove
Following the death of Maile Delwic, Sara Verigrove takes over, and continues to create new Red Homes in Santharia. Her kindness and generosity contributes to the reputation of the Refuge.
1660: Red Home in Elsreth
Verigrove persuades a local duke to donate part of his property to the Refuge, where she sponsors the building of a Red Home.
1664: Red Home in Cavthan
A small cottage is purchased in Cavthan and a Red Home established.

Hey Rayne, welcome back to Santharia! You do not know, as I am fairly new, but I come to give you comments in this color. BTW, you forgot to place the proper post icon at the top. It needs to be the exclamation point if you are ready for comments.

Oh, before I forget, you were the main developer for Gnomic back in the day, right? Well, recently some of us have gotten the ball rolling again on vocabulary and sentence structure. Look at these two threads to see our most recent discussions, if you still want to help out there.

Nyermersian Refuge

Established in 1440 a.S by Delilah Theraway (of what tribe is this Delilah?), the Nyermersian Refuge for Women and Children (often just called “The Refuge” or “The House” or even, less often, “The Manor”) (These nicknames should also be listed after the title at the top of your entry.) has since helped serve hundreds, perhaps thousands, of homeless, lost, and abandoned women and children. A landmark several strals east of Nyermersys, the manor itself is far older (older than what?), built by the Landgraven Chetain Ferigrad at around 1100 a.S, near the end of the Age of Rebuilding. Since its original construction, more has been added to it, supposedly as the Ferigrad’s fortune and family grew, though now it has not undergone many changes for several hundred years.

Location: The Refuge resides several strals of the city of Nyermersys itself, in the province of Nermeran in Santharia. It resides on the southern side of the Teiphra river and within view of the grand mountains to the north and southeast. Although the building is well out of the city, the inhabitants of the Refuge have the advantage of the close distance, and many of their foods or necessities are purchased there.

Purpose: Since the time Delilah Theraway founded the building, the function has remained the same: to provide a home (usually temporary) for homeless, lost, and abandoned women and children. Unmarried women expecting (changed to avoid redundancy) children find a safe place to bear their children and recover. Those whose husbands or families died in plague or fires often come to the Refuge. It is well known, especially in Nyermersys, that if a child is unwanted, the Refuge will try to take in it if it can, and provide for it.

Those unable or unwilling to keep up with the constant travel are eagerly welcomed into the Home where their experiences and knowledge benefit all the other women. Many (perhaps something like "a number of gnomes" instead of "many"; gnomes do not associate with humans that much, after all, and you didi say most of the inhabitants are human.) gnomes, particularly Daran gnomes, have found there way to the Home and often became wonderful educators.

The original and continuing goal of the Refuge remains to provide a temporary home for women and children. When a woman first comes to the refuge, she is given time to rest and relax, but after a period, is expected to take part in the management of the Refuge. All women help to maintain the Refuge, and the building makes much of the income it needs to provide fresh food and other necessities for its members by selling cloth made by the women who stay there. Many of the skills learned at the Refuge provide often disheartened women with a feeling of purpose, and learning new skills often provides new opportunities for them once they leave.

The household chores you describe sound like something any medieval women would be able to do, and would have already been taught by her mother. So perhaps these chores could be more progressive? The women could be taught to do farm chores, and in that way the House would have food for itself. They could also be taught to be good merchants, since they would be selling their own products in the market, right? This is just a suggestion, you could leave it as is if you wanted.

If a boy is not adopted by his 11th year, he is sent to live in the guest house or allowed the opportunity to travel to Nyermersys or another city for work.

The girls born in the House or soon before their mother arrives (this last phrase is long and a little confusing. Perhaps you could consolidate it to "girls raised in the House have..."?) there has the opportunity of staying with the benefit of receiving a moderately good education and a good chance of finding a suitable husband in the surrounding town.

The movement south is a slow one: the southern-most Red Home resides in Elsreth.

That last paragraph seems unnecessary for a place entry. You should be describing more of the building and less of the structure of the "Red Sisters" order itself. That could be saved for a group entry.

Red Homes are typically overseen by older women who help take care of the young. Young women are often encourages to become Red Sisters and live at these homes, as they provide them with new opportunities for work and especially marriage.

The Red Homes, and the Refuge itself, is protected by guards provided by gravens, dukes, and in the case of the refuse (What do you mean by "refuse"?), even the Thane himself.  In 1446, Delilah managed to acquire guards from the local graven, whose wife was her aunt.

Her past experiences visiting many of the towns in Santharia lead her to help establish Red Homes in parts of Santharia.

After Meriella Fergos bids the Thane of Nermeran, he establishes a new order of knights: The Red Guardians of the Sisterhood.

1618: Red Home in (remove space)Salsair

Hi Rayne. We haven't spoken before, but Welcome back!

A very interesting entry, this one. I just thought you might like to know that Alysse and I have been working on a female Orcen General who, in later life, turns away from the battlefield and devotes her life to helping the orphans of war. She eventually gathers quite a following and at present there are numerous sites throughout Caelereth where Spitals and Soothing Gardens have been opened by her devotees.

It doesn't really impact on your entry in any way, but I thought it may be of some interest to you.
Also, there are several of us who are in the early discussions about collating all information on nursing practices throughout Caelereth. Should we keep you in mind for when we all manage to get together?

I try to comment on this one as well a bit, even though Rayne seems to have been swallowed again by the "real life monster" :) Well, at least once she can get back to this she has a bunch of ideas and suggestions to work through... (I'll base my comments on what Morden has already checked very nicely, so make sure to integrate that as well, Rayne!)

- Morden asks for the tribe name, and so do I. Basically we're trying to establish tibe name conventions, and we've got several so far (e.g. Erpheronian, Avennorian, Serphelorian nomenclature, see these tribe entries), so whenever possible we don't create names at random anymore. Seems we're dealing here with an Erpheronian founder.

- Something to fix:

Quote
...particularly Daran gnomes, have found their way to the Home and often became wonderful educators.

- I've mentioned this already on MSN last time, but we should try to keep this institution somewhat medievally realistic. In medieval times things definitely were much worse for people to earn their living, as there were no such state institutions like money for those who cannot work or don't find any work etc. So if you ended up with a child and were poor in general, this was really a bad thing to happen to someone, and not too uncommon, which is why whole quarters for the poor developed etc.

So in regard of ther Nyemersysian Refuge, we need to make sure that such a benevolent institution cannot deal with all the trouble that is out there in medieval times, even if we're already at progressed time (15th Santharian century). So I guess it's important to stress that those people that the Refuge helps are actually basically handpicked cases, where the "scouts" see actual opportunities for the people they help, and base their decisions on that.

- You mention further Red Homes being opened in the course of time. I also integrated an orphanage at the Knupp the Sneaker entry in Ciosa, the Crayleway's Cradle (Quote: "A place founded under the guidance of the Landgraven of the Ciosa Fief in the year 1572 a.S."), which you could perhaps mention briefly. Not necessarily as a Red Home, but maybe the Cradle could be inspired by such a place as the Refuge, and thus make a good linking topic.

- I also like the idea of the Red Guardians, which is still a pretty small order, yet also seems to represent an important signal for society. And in the Erpheronian context, this makes the former Proudmen much more humble and humane if you so wish :)

So that's basically all I'd like to add here - nice to see a submission yb our very own Rayne again, hope you get the time to finish this one as well soon! :D

Isn't the city's name 'Nyermersys' instead of 'Nymersys'?

Having just re-read my notes on The Daughters of Choan, it's scary how similar they are in some respects to the Red Sisters.

I'll have to do a bit of 'jiggling' around of my ideas before I start to write the entry proper.

No rush, Tharoc, I still have to finish Choan.  It's the history part that is causing me trouble.  Everything else is fine.   Would it be okay with your ideas to set her in about 290ish b. S. to be involved in the Osther Oc domination of the northern Kuglimz peoples?  Shortly before the time where the half orc peoples that would form the beginnings of the Kaaer started coming into being--maybe the orcish cruelty to the humans was partially responsible for Choan's withdrawal from warfare and her choice to set up the Daughters groups, to help other women (orcs or not) whose lives and homes had been devastated by war.

Does that work for you, or did you have a better time/place in mind?

Whatever you think is the best time-period to suit your needs, Alysse. I haven't made any decisions about a time-frame for her as yours is the entry which I need to weave mine around. So go for it!

Huhu Rayne!!

An idea just popped in my head. How many thought have you put in the time setting? Do you think we could throw this one back in time about 2000 years? Some number changing would be necessary and maybe one or the other historical thing, but it would be great to have this orphanage not only founded and initiated by Delilah Theraway, but supported by Queen Caralla. That would fit in so well. I could need that. Maybe it came to an end after two centuries, was reopened in our century or something like this.

What do you think?

Trelstahl's entry I'm about to finish is here
You will find more about her founding and funding schools and other tuition places once I'm finished.

Any chance to see an update on this one finally, Rayne? It was posted a year ago, received detailed comments, well and as this all cost time and energy I wouldn't want it to go to waste.

I had completely forgotten about this entry!  buck I will revise it as soon as I can. My semester has gotten slightly overwhelming (hence my fading presence on the boards). I cannot make promises on when I will revise it. Though I hope for a lull in the readings, papers, projects, interviews, study, meetings, etc., I may not be able to get to this until May. I can say that, when I get a free moment, it'll be one of the first things I revise.

I'm sorry about this. I will make it up to you.

Files have been replaced again, but the question remains how long this will last. SMF support will have a look at the security problem.

It has been hacked. The third time in 3 days. I need to replace the changed files again (won't happen before evening) - and then see what the SMF support recommends as a strategy.
