In Progress: Knight overlooking City

Just something I doodled this evening. Obviously not finished - have to add the sword, for one thing,
but I'm not really inspired by weaponry - and some more interesting detail to the city/village itself.
Ideas, comments, critique, and requests to use all welcome, as usual.
Still in misty mood, but you'll note glimmers of sunlight here and there on his armour....
Goodnight for now, my darling Santharians!
Regards from the bard,
Judith

Perhaps some women washing clothes in the river? Children swimming in it? A bridge? The hint of some pattern on the knight's surcoat? (though I know that' sprobably not easy, because of the folds + not facing us fully)...
Uhm, yeah, that's about it for my suggestions. In any case, it's looking pretty good already! Can't wait to see the finished product ^.^

Looks very good, especially the face. Just a couple things. The wavy pattern looks a bit soft and woolly for chainmail, and he needs gloves for the hands.

Hey, that sword is really weak, Judy...
No, seriously - you seems to try a different style here, though I don't know how exactly you're doing it... The background looks more hand drawn, our hero in front more digital maybe, but however it is done, it looks great so far. There is perhaps a certain contrast existing between the sharpness of the figure in the front and the background, especially visible at the hair outlines, that could be made a bit smoother on the outlines I'd say to blend better into the rest of the picture.
Anyway, the scenery is pretty cool, and in my point of view is nice enough to stay as it is in the background - but as has been mentioned, some signs of life are never wrong
- At any rate another marvelous Bard picture in the works, lovely stuff!
*thinks about where it could fit*

I agree on the point of the chainmail. It looks like one of those oft mentioned forcibly foisted Christmas sweaters.

Just something you doodled? Are you making fun of those of us who have to actual work to get a picture this far along?
The face is really good. And his proporations are excellent. I will be curious to find out who he is and what tha town is behind him. The town has good character as well.
Well as you said this is a work in progress. As already mentioned, the thing that stands out the most is that the knight is sharper than the background. It looks as if he is standing in front of a painting.
Great job so far, I am eager to learn from how you progress your pictures..

I do like this knight--perhaps it's the resemblance to, oh, say, Viggo Mortenson in LOTR? (looks innocently at Bard) Which of course must be completely unintentional...
Look forwards to seeing this realized, it's good!

Seeker, you're not alone. At least Mortensen looks like a guy.

Just an idea here. Really like the pic, Judith, but like everyone else, I noticed the two seemingly different styles. But, to me, it looks as if the knight is standing in front of a tapestry. Often castles had elaborate tapestries on the wall to act as insulation somewhat, and often they were decorated. Could you maybe make the edges look as though they were the edges of a woven tapestry? Just an idea.

Boy, that'd make my life a lot easier - not redoing the whole city....
You're so thoughtful, Alt!
But I do like to give Art the backgrounds, because place illustrations are hard to come by, and we do NOT have a lot of urban pictures atm. If someone wants the knight ASAP, I'll certainly be happy to give him a tapestry background which would only take an hour or so.... but I'm still going to try to draw the city picture separately. It's based on some place called 'Cskesky Krumhow' or something like that, an authentic medieval city on a river.
Here's another version, with sword and a few touchups to the knight, and a different bk.

I actually really love him with this bk because the colours blend and complement so nicely. Even though there's still not a lot of detail, it's more convincing.
I thought about adding a couple of black-iron cressets and a banner to dress up the surroundings: suggestions?

Oh, and while, yes, I have adored Aragorn since I was thirteen, this isn't Viggo, as wonderfully as he epitomizes the Ranger....
It was actually based on a shot of Bloom from Kingdom of Heaven....

Of course....Bloom.
The other one from LOTR. My wife calls him "my prince" and then she smiles and flutters her eyes.

You mean Cesky Krumlov, Judy? I'm about four hours away from that place by train. Going there some weekend this summer
For anyone interested, Cesky Krumlov is in its entirety part of the Unesco World Heritage program. Look it up sometime, it's a beautiful little town
