Hey.  I'm new around here, and already I've noticed the controversy over necromancy (fire magic, earth magic, etc.).  I may be over simplifying it, but why not just make another class of magic (necromancy, black arts, dark arts, etc.)?  Even if certain spells use attributes from certain classes, the overall effect is still one of necromany, so why not give it its own class?

My 2 cents.

Well, the main reason it't not a class of its own is because that's not the way Ximax classifies spells.  Spells are grouped into the various elements and spell classes according to the elements their effects are associated with, and how they affect cár'áll, rather than what they deal with.  Of course, other magic systems might group things differently, but the main focus right now, both here and at the ROG board, is on Santharia, and since the Ximaxian system is the dominant one in Santharia, the Ximaxian system is the one given priority in this forum.  I doubt we'll be working on any of the other magic systems anytime soon.

Ok.  Can a mage or necromancer only control one element?  Because basically my thought for an independent category (necromancy) would be for those characters who learned from an independent source (another necromancer).  Even if it used different elements, what if they only learned necromany spells, they would learn enough of each element to complete dark spells, but that would be it.  (That was a little confusing...I hope you get it)  I guess it might be like trying to drive a truck before you can drive a car, because you'd need a strong foundation to be able to do spells.  I'm starting to contradict myself, so I'll stop.

Don't stop.  If you stop, you may as well quit right now.

Yes, it is possible for someone to learn just about necromancy.  However, the magic system is in shambles at this point and we are not sure exactly how one would go about this.  But there is no problem with someone only learning one type of spell within an element.  And I do suppose it's possible to use more advanced spells without learning the full basics of lower levels (using necromancy without the ability to create or manipulate fire for example) but that would only happen in private training.

The private training is what I was talking about.  I'm going to keep thinking about this...I'll get back to you all.

Forgive my absence, all those who have been annoyed by it.

As for the question posed, IMHO yes, you can very well learn "necromancy" as you put it. Not in Ximax, of course.

The reason I put "necromancy" as that, is due to the fact that the Ximaxian system does not have a class named necromancy. Spells that deal with bringing life to the dead are spread across the various classes of fire magic. However, nothing prevents a mage to be taught by somebody somewhere about the dead and the magic of animating them and all that.

A Ximaxian would say: "You, my dear mage, have learned Fire spels of various classes and difficulties, but have not learned all the other things Fire is, and you hardly know of their existance. Fascinating..." ;)

AFAIK, necromancy does not bring life to the dead.  It merely uses the dead bodies as puppets which the mage controls.  Creating actual undead will probably end up being Xeua, as I don't see how fire magic can ever bring something back to life.

Yes, bad wording on my part. Magic that deals with giving motion to the still, then.

No, not really.  The spells that deal with animating skeletons and such are being moved to fire magic, and spells like Bone Calling aren't really necromancy anyway, since they don't animate anything.

[makes his appearance in this Ximaxian oriented room]

"Ehm... no, I'm not trying to sell you life-insurances (whatever those might be)"]... Actually... uh... May I point you to the Venlaken Enclave region in Nybelmar? Daedhirian undead, maybe not exactly classical necromancers, but if you need something like this for rp-ing (whatever that might be, obviously :) ) perhaps you can take a look..."

[leaves the room being dragged off by his screaming conscience: "What was that?! Self-promotion?! Shame on you, shame! you.... you.... you..."]
