So, what have i been doing wrong? I've made a little picture to practice using GIMP, and it looks.. well, messy.

For starters what does the title "I can has picturez" mean?  grin

This is a really good start.  How much have you used GIMP before this picture? It looks like you have some basics down, but just need practice and experience using the various tools and functionailty of GIMP.  I suggest watching tutorials and such which can be found on various sites such as You Tube.

Specifically on the picture i will focus my comments on the sky.  When I do a sky I like to use the blend tool (one next to bucket fill).  I pick two colors and create the background of the sky in two tones.  This makes it a bit more interesting than a monotone color sky. Then the clouds go on top of that.  The sky is obviously dark but it also looks like you are trying to add clouds in the sky.  It looks to me like you are using the smudge tool but the smudge rate is set too high.  Lower the smudge rate and it will allow for better blending within the cloud itself.  However, clouds at night are difficult to portray.  You also have fireworks which means the clouds must be high up in the sky, or you wouldn't be able to see the fireworks.

The fireworks- the sky looks like a paintball target.  Lets fix that.  Start off with defined rays shooting from the center.  Each ray should be more faded near the center and brighter on the outside (as the firework explodes. This can be achieved by gradually erasing the ray on the faded end using the eraser tool adjusted for opacity (because you don't want to erase it completely.   Also each ray should have a faint glow around it, especially near the tips.  This can be added by using the airbrush tool using a very light color.  Also you may want to add some sparks falling toward the ground.

This is just one way to achieve some of these effects.  If you look online  am sure  others will have come up with fancy ways to make it even better.

Good luck and keep practicing.

The light from the windows looks too harsh. You might try a slightly softer shade of yellow (one not quite so lemony?) and a blur tool to fix that I think.

Awright, i'll go try and figure out those suggestions, thanks folks!

Seeker, "I can has cheezburger?" is an internet meme, deriving from a lolcat picture compilation site.
*sees the confusing look* Lolcats are another internet meme. Go see www.icanhascheezburger.com..

Oh, and this was the first time i touched the program. The whole image is composed of three photograps, worked and edited in several ways; a night sky, a fireworks explosion (although the original was white :P) and a hungarian castle by day.

A second attempt, not including fireworks seems to be turning out a lot easier :P pyrotechnic light effects might have been a bit much for a first work of *ahem* art. Anyone got use for a seaside tower at sunset? (ading image as soon as i figure out what to do with the dratted tower!)

Another attempt at using GIMP to produce all-new imagery (i now understand why people use tablets to draw at their computers!). For bandwidth reasopns the photograph-based previous image has been removed.

Ladies and gentlemen; Mosstone Tower.

The land edges are still a bit awkward, but overall im not all that dissatisfied.

Files have been replaced again, but the question remains how long this will last. SMF support will have a look at the security problem.

It has been hacked. The third time in 3 days. I need to replace the changed files again (won't happen before evening) - and then see what the SMF support recommends as a strategy.

Arti, could you maybe take a look at the RPG board? I got a message from my anti-virus program and now I can't access the column on the right with the list of current threads and the shoutbox. Thankies :)
