I haven't been a member for too long.  So far I have mainly enjoyed the written entries and the artwork (which I am honored to contribute to).  However I have not been appreciating the wonderful music.  I just listened to Bard Judiths " Sailing to Zandiria" .  Wow that is beautiful.  Seriously beautiful.  I was wondering if there was a way to bring the music more to the forefront.

Art---Would it be possible to make the music automatically play when the associated entry is opened?

I think it would add a whole new level to our entries, and we would not possibly miss it. I could envision every entry at some point would hve a song, music, or sounds that accompany the mood of the entry and pic.  As I see it the written entry is the cake, the picture is the icing on the cake and the music is the flowers, ribbons and decorations that make the cake so much more special.

Well, making the music somehow more accessible is an ok idea, as we definitely have a bunch of gems to show off. But there's big trouble with presenting music on site in general.

For one we're talking about MP3s. So these are around 5 MB in size mostly. Putting them on a page to automatically load requires a fast internet connection, you block loading the page properly - and, very seriously, it is annoying! If every time you open up a page the music loads it will annoy you to no end. Especially if we don't ask the user before if he/she really wants that.

Another possibility would be some sort of general jukebox, so that the user can select pieces. Theoretically that could be done with Flash code.

However, there's a lot of danger in there for server load and our bandwidth.  If people use that jukebox constantly this means constant download, which will most likely slow down the site and lets us reach our transfer limit pretty soon. Santhworld already is a very daring concept where we stress the server with downloading MP3s, but we're basically working with a few major pieces per module and small sound bits. It's still manageable that way. If we make an MP3 player a prominent site feature we're asking for killing the server I'd say.

We could of course maybe make it easier to access music in an entry by placing it more prominently and offer via a small Flash application either a direct download or a streaming to listen in. This would't be as dramatic as a jukebox.

that would be a good idea, if we had art work for the piece then could we not make it a youtube style player, just with the photo and then the audio track behind?

This would be great.  Could we open this up to develop not just Santharian songs but music that fits the mood of particular entries.  (Meaning it doesn't necessarily have to be a song played in Santharia)  Or could we open it up to allow sound effects, like the sounds of a bird singing for a bird entry or the sounds of an ox grunting for the Ox Mount Entry.

Does this run too much against the premise of what we are doing? For example it is easy to pretend we are Santharians drawing pictures (even though we are using computers),  however real Santharians would have no way to capture music or sounds to add to the compendium, unless Jonael invents some sort of Steampunk recording device.  :)

thoughts?

Well, I don't know if people are actually hunting for sound effects to add to their entries, though if we'd do some sort of mini-jukebox per entry we could as well make it possible to play multiple pieces. This would all also be a question of design on how we'd implement such a mini-player in an entry. For example we could let a bard with a lute sit in a corner, some sort of scroll in the background where you see the name of the piece, and you could play it or download it, and perhaps scroll up/down if there's more to play, something like this. It would definitely be quite an effort though, to do it right.

well their must be scripts that do a basic music player, i like the idea of having it more assessable, it would need work, and maintenance to keep it running properly, i also really like the lute idea i can just imagine a little figure in green.

OK thanks Art.  Of course ideas like these mean more work for you.  So I will not push this idea.  If others feel it is worth your time  ;) then perhaps it can be incorporated somehow.  However I also feel you have some other more interesting things in the works like Nepris updates and another horror story idea?

unless Jonael invents some sort of Steampunk recording device.  :)

Would you kindly refrain from putting such thoughts into his head?  undecided

*Jonael's goggles spark up with the shine of a thousand ideas* passing through the Mechkanist's head. Just now, his ginger hair seemes more firey than a minute ago*

Ah, the ideas! Haha, I must admit though that finding appropriate sounds for entries would be a very difficult chore, considering the amounts you'd have to find to make it a task worth investing time into. Plus, considering the intricacy of some of our entries, you'd have heard the sound loop a hundred times by the time you'd propperly read through the entry..

And though 'steampunk' as such is a term Arti prolly dunna wanna hear in the Compendium, I'm honoured you'd have thought of me for this engineering job Seeker *bows in reverence to his fellow friend and artist mentor*

*none of which include or make use of steampunk concepts, thank you very much!!!

The Black Gnomes were supposed to have some pseudo-steampunk elements in their culture...as were some mysterious Nybelmar race... *pokes Mira*

Files have been replaced again, but the question remains how long this will last. SMF support will have a look at the security problem.

It has been hacked. The third time in 3 days. I need to replace the changed files again (won't happen before evening) - and then see what the SMF support recommends as a strategy.

Arti, could you maybe take a look at the RPG board? I got a message from my anti-virus program and now I can't access the column on the right with the list of current threads and the shoutbox. Thankies :)
