The black shadow does look better!

Art, there are basically all layers in this picture (hidden), I just realised, that I need to do the different dates yet. I will upload when I have done it as a PSD.

I'll give the animated gif a try nevertheless, when I got the time to do it. ;)

Basically no problems with this one, even the monster is clearly visible :) The only thing I can think of which is different to other maps is that the shadows on the texts are thrown upwards, not downwards, which is a bit unusual, but it's nothing serious.

Didn't realise that, for me it was clear, that a shadow would fall in the direction North. Well, that is a Northern speciality then, if it can stay! :)

Looks ok in terms of what you want to get across, though as already mentioned there are downsides to an animated GIF. For example it's larger than 700 KB, which is quite a bit, secondly it's available just in one size and animates automatically (even though the animation is slow), but the user cannot control what he/she wants to see. This can contribute to driving people crazy if you think about all the ads that change and move and jump in your face and what not at various webpages :)

So the best solution eventually would still be to make a Flash movie out of it with e.g. a straight timeline and buttons left and right to switch to the next or previous state. If I have the source material I can try to do something in this respect - though it won't happen soon, as I'm busy with my story and then again Santhworld over the holidays.

Is the size such a problem? I mean, it has ten individual pictures with a lot of information. Maybe I could make it slightly smaller still, but you need to be able to see something.

I don't exactly know, how it could work, but what if it would not be animated, but more like a pdf with a menu to the right, where you can click and go through all stages. My preview seems not to be able to display a gif, but it opens that gif in exactly the same way, the first map is displayed big, the rest is listed in a side menu, each pic is clickable. Well, like a pdf with more than one pages. Would that be an option? I don't want to give you more work with a flash.

It's not so easy to realize that as you suggest. Can't really think of an efficient way to do that.

The best option for me is the Flash thing, because while it would take its time to realize I could build it as a template for other maps of that format to switch to different times and display expansions etc. In the long run that could be quite helpful.
