Greetings, Shayan. It's always good to welcome such talent to our Dream.

I see that you say you may be painting mainly elves, due to correlation between their androgynous appearance and your prefered style. Might I suggest that you take a look at orcs as well?
Strange as it may seem, but facially, male and female orcs can be quite similar. Obviously, the males are much heavier in build, and not all tribes share this vague androgeny, but it wouldn't take much tweaking to change a female face into a male one, or vice versa.

Perhaps Dwarves could be another option? They have so much hair on and around their faces that it can be difficult to tell the sexes apart! Facially, at least.

In general:  I can change the Diorye'oleal's hair to make it more naturalistic and ditch the stylized look if that's preffered. I can also get rid of the long ponytail if needed.
I'm not implying it should be used, just that I can change it if it would suit Santharia better.

@Irid Thank you for asking :) it's always a compliment, so I feel honoured.
The picture's already been spoken for by Talia, though.
If you don't mind a rough work, maybe I can try to paint something for you specifically? I don't have a good pc right now and little time so the work won't be as polished as the top picture, but I could give it a try if you pm me the CD :)

@Talia ok I'll be awaiting your pm! I have about 3-5 weeks before I leave the country for a few months and (still) not a good pc atm so the sooner the better!

@Seeker thank you ^_^ (I really like your Tharoc btw)

@Tharoc  Thanks! I mostly enjoy painting elves because I like the androgynous look of the men. It's not so much that I find it difficult to differentiate between masculine and feminine drawing-wise but more what I like to draw. Even so, your suggestion was interesting, because lately I have become more interested in backgrounds and painting other races and painting masculinity in general. So when I get back from my trip I'll probably dabble a bit in those too!

Shayan, I love your Dior priest!   Just the right amount of arrogance mixed with beauty.  I would indeed destylize the hair (though I love what you've done to create a very graphic, striking look, a more naturalistic style is generally preferred for Dream illustrations) and perhaps add just a bit of ornamentation to the lapels in that Dior irregular style.  I'm creating a master Styles list, with illustrations, and will steal a crop of this picture as a perfect example of the type.

Shayan, I did some research and I fear I have to write another person's entry to explain, why Drafas Tristin did not look like an Erpheronian. ;)

Quote
Aside from the very widespread red and brunette hair colours blond is also encountered to a minimal extent in the original Erpheronian territories, however, raven haired people were practically non-existing initially, and if so, they were seen as bad omen and Coór-ridden due to superstitious beliefs. This superstition of course didn't survive the unification with Centorauria, where people with raven hair are pretty common, and so reservations soon were overcome when the tribes began to mix.
-

Well, that is no problem, we just say, the picture of him was painted much later, after the Erpheronians mixed with the Caltharians. Then we could add an Erpheronian symbol, the phoenix as well..  grin

What I propose to change now is following:

- add a red stroke in his hair, but only if it is good looking, I can write around it as well and explain his black hair. Maybe he went to Strata because he had black hair ;)

- make his clothes look a bit more noble - noble , but worn down, maybe just try to make his clothes a bit more shiny, or add some highlights to the collar, anything you can think of.

- The most important thing would be to replace his jewellery with something else - a pendant in the form of a phoenix. That symbol for the Erpheronian comes later in history, but I think it would fit nevertheless, even if historically incorrect.

Maybe I need to write an entry about your picture and not about Drafas ;)

I just got the joyous news my 'good' pc is finally repaired.  Will be picking it up this week and then I'll try to change both pics asap considering my date of departure is coming up fast.

@Judith: Do you have specific ornament in mind for the 'lapels' or shall I just go with what feels right?

@Talia:  I can make Drafas a brunet with some russet hints, I think, while still trying to keeping the overall darkness that adds to the mood of the pic (maybe changing the lightsource a bit)  I'll tinker around with it a bit so you can take your pick from a few options.  I'll try to reflect that in the clothing as well ^_^

Thanks for the responses and suggestions all! I'll give it my best shot :)

Don't worry about the hair colour, if you like the black better, I'll write around it :D

Great to see you back, Shayan! It has been quite a while since we heard from you... Let's hope your PC works perfectly fine now for the rest of the century and you can finish up a picture and get it up on site finally! I'm looking forward to it :D  thumbup

Shayan:  the irregular, dramatic styling which most people associate with the Dior is epitomized in this illustration of a Coor'hem elven girl:

http://www.santharia.com/pictures/koldar/coorhem_girl.htm

The asymmetrical swirls you see on the doorframe in the background would look stunning as embroidery along the hems and lapels of your priest.... and I promise I'd have a spot for them when you're done!

Thanks so much - my Styles entry will be the stronger for it.

Ok! Got my pc back.

...with half of my RAM (argh...can't it ever go right ONCE?! cry it's just beyond frustrating!)

but; still sorta-good-to-go! I have an emergency colouring job (they sure don't waste time to drag me off by the hair heh) but after that I'll get right to it!

@Talia: I'll try to get an Erpheronian feel by enhancing the palette with gold and reds.  I figured I could paint flames for embroidery because they could symbolize the phoenix, the sun and the dragon all at once.  I might paint a sun symbol instead of a phoenix if I get too short on time, but my first aim is a feniks.

@Judith ok! I'll try my best and see if I can enhance the colour too since it's a bit too bland right now and the monochrome doesn't give the effect I was looking for

@Artimidor: yes! I hope it will run for a century now :D I don't think I could survive the disappointment of another malfunction because it's not the first time things went haywire tech wise. It really made me feel bad to have to cancel so many projects because of it...again

Just a quick show to ask if I'm going in the right direction.

I changed the palette to fit the general idea of the Proudmen a little more. I made his hair longer since nobles often had it around shoulder length.
I'm tinkering around with the embroidery.  Just let me know if you'd rather see something different while I'm still in the middle of the process :)
I'll define the chest a little more, but the original character was a scrawny mage so I can't really make him look warrior all of a sudden ;) and the phoenix pendant will probably obscure most of it.

Great changes so far, Shayan! Colour changes are nice, as is the embroidery, very nice! And the phoenix idea for the pendant of course is also great, so this seems to be coming along very well!

And that's good, because we can really use a picture of such a key person as Drafas - for one to replace the old black/white drawing in his entry, and secondly it will make a nice addition to our history tables. Having facing there one can associate with history events makes things much easier, as tables full of texts just don't look that good and don't give the read much anchor points. So very much appreciated that we get this one sorted out!  thumbup

Ditto - I love the enhancements.  Personally, I'm jealous of your 'embroidery' technique and will probably steal it for my next dress illustration.... :)   very effective way to suggest the threads and their silky layering....

For the Dior guy, if you're going to add just a hint of colour, may I suggest moody blues and purples?   Just to keep the palette pretty monochromatic and brooding?  I'm looking forwards to seeing what you do with him!  (perhaps even that bluish shine to the hair ala Clark Kent....)  :D

I love him, Shayan! He doesn't have to look like a overmuscled warrior! After all, he had some magic traits ...

Quote
'We had only rode a few minutes when we heard a very familiar roaring sound and when we looked up it was indeed what we feared at the hearing of the sound. A dragon had pursued us and sure was going to ruin our newly founded city. But before our eyes the great creature landed softly before us and with a unhunman shriek he fell down upon the ground, changing form… to become our king! We were astonished and couldn’t speak a word, but instead he did: "Go back, go back and leave me be, you can’t help me, not now, not ever." That’s when he run away. It took us a few seconds to recover from what we had seen and we tried to pursue our leader and find him, but we lost him.'

It is said that ultimately Drafas took a dragon form to become the only Dragon south of the Anaios Gap, but his lair has never been found.
