Talia brought up a point my Imp re-write that probably needs to be discussed.

Revision - Fix spelling, grammar or organization issues with an entry.

Update- Fix and/or add missing sections of an entry to get it current with template.

Re-write - Completely remove some or all sections of an entry and re-write them with new ideas.

How far should one go with when deciding to do the above with an entry? Should most entries be updated only? What determines that an entry needs re-written? Is it appropriate to re-write someone else's work?

Should a guideline be followed or a member vote be made before an entry is touched?

No, I would not want to live in a world without dragons, as I would not want to live in a world without magic, for that is a world without mystery, and that is a world without faith. And that, I fear, for any reasoning, conscious being, would be the cruelest trick of all.

I don't actually make a distinction between your three items. In the Herbarium, it's all Revisions, but then again, i rarely if ever find an old entry with spelling/grammar issues in the first place.
In general, the rule is (or so i consider it to be) "Retain as much original text as possible." although rewording a line here and there to smoothen the transitions between old and new text ought to be fine. Overall the idea of -If it's not broken, don't fix it.- would apply.

If you want to actually re-write main sections (such as an appearance section, as opposed to removing a tiny tiny 'territory' section to replace it with a functional, modern version), permission of a) the local Moderator, and b) the original author of the entry would be required.

I did that, for instance, with the Auturian Woods entry. (Or rather, i WILL do that. Eventually. Procrastination, thy name is Miraran), where i emailed Uragel for permission to radically alter her (admittedly somewhat bland) description.

Yeah, generally I tend to retain as much of the old ideas and concepts as possible, although I do tend to reword and add in bits in order to clarify what was already written, or to add new ideas/links into the old text.  I try not to change stuff unless it really doesn't work any more, and I quite enjoy working with the old ideas to actually make them feasible with the new.

The only stuff I've completely rewritten has been Brownie stuff as that's where I really know what is completely unworkable and what can just be tweaked.  However, even then I try and give people the chance to speak up against me doing so, just in case I'm treading on anyone's toes.  I've done Rat Brownies, Ethnic Groupings and Life Magic so far, and all of those I've posted a proposal for I think.
