Art, you made the same mistake as I did, the question is not to use it or not, but if decimals are allowed additionally, or on their own. The other measurement is of course still usable. If you don't want them here, vote no, if you want to prevent a headbashing, vote yes. Of course you are free not to vote :)

Am I the only one who read the subject as 'decriminalization'?   lol

Anyway, I voted yes.  Generally, I think it's better to avoid decimals, but there might be times when it is better to sacrifice some flavour for clarity.

There is nothing like a tiny dot to split the team so completely!

What a dot that is!  rolleyes

Ah, in decades to come wise man shall look back and stroke their full and bushy beards and say "Ay, 1669. That were the year of the great decimalic war, when all the mighty folk of the compendium in their grand and gold-lined halls were riven and thrown t'chaos, plunging the land to civil war. And d'you know, t'were all over a dot nae bigger than an ant's head."

rolling

But yus. Oh, I'm really not sure whether I should vote at all. I'd dearly love to vote no, but feel I'd be going against the creative and communal spirit of the compendium if I did. Seeing as everyone else seems to want to keep that freedom, and I don't want to be curmudgeonly over such a finicky variety of debate.

Well, since the topic is on dots and gods already... Oh my Dot...

And as for Jenna; the whole point (point, not dot) of the vote is to see what people think of this issue. Technically, i think i could come up with a path of reasoning where nót viting although you'd like to is more against the team spirit than voting for an unpopular option.

Or, y'know, vote without posting your vote, you wouldn't be the only one, according to the poll results.

In fact, it is more often a comma, just the Britishinfluenced countries  use the dot, what is the official world wide notation?

Now, why don't we break the next discussion from the fence, if we should use the dot or the comma?  evil

Lol, Talia, good distraction technique. I think either is probably fine, as we're such an international board, and we already restrict spelling to the british style.

Good reasoning Mira. You've convinced me. I'll vote no, because that's my real opinion, though I'm absolutely fine with people using decimals if that's the general consensus. I'm just used to seeing, and would rather see the santharian measurements used.

Oh no, my vote's tipped things into stalemate! :D Whoops. Didn't mean to over complicate things.

Somehow I missed your post, Rayne:

Quote
2) By including decimals, we prevent measurement mistakes: As was demonstrated in a previous thread, there are a great number of entries that included "three fores" for one ped. By making people calculate what their measurements actually correspond to in terms on ONE measurement and decimals, all of these errors would be eliminated.

You are insisting on the fact, that it is wrong, to say three fores instead of a ped. That is not true, both is correct, because it denotes the same length. So most of your examples in the other thread are not speaking for you. Only combinations like : This is 1ped and three fores long make no sense, for you have to say either two peds or six fores.

Quote
3) Decimals in parenthesis would allow for both aesthetic appeal and clear measurement: The decimals are side-noted in parenthesis, so they don't replace any artistic or poetic description in entries. Instead, they act as a helpful tool for readers and other developers who wish to reference the entry in some way or want to better envision the dimensions in terms they can understand.

I believe decimals in parenthesis allows for the best of both worlds!

I do not think, that decimals are clearer, just maybe easier to grasp for newbies. Once you are accustomed to our measurement, it is as clear as decimals. Nor do I agree, that you can envision any dimensions clear with them.

I don't see any aesthetic in using the decimal, it would be a horror for me, if I would have to use them. Even in parenthesis I would see them as tainting my entries.

I would go one step further; ESPECIALLY in parenthesis i would see them as tainting my entries. Parenthesis are ugly, nasty, eeeeeevil things that should not be used in 'official' writing of any kind, that's what footnotes are for.

Wait, can we do that? I wouldn't mind footnotes if it would make reading entries more enjoyable for the no-decimal crowd. I just thought they might be a lot of work for poor Arti to put them in...

I'm pretty certain i've seen entries using a plain supertext "1)" and having a little extra line at the bottom to refer to.. Possibly one of Corens more.. lenghty entries.

And there was an experiment with people pre-preparing a lot of entries for Art a while back.. i zoned out of Santharia for a while afterwards, so i dont know if it's still happening. I'm sure i still have the required prefab templates lying around somewhere.

EDIT-> Found it!

I will have some footnotes also in my Divine Magic entry. But I think they should be reserved to situations, where they really are NEEDED. Not that we get a flooding. Most things in parenthesis can well be said in the normal text also.
