Gnomish Word Help
«
on:
14 January 2010, 14:38:34 »
In the 'Goal Ball' entry I'm currently trying to finish, I've got the ball used (essentially a ball made of rubber) being created by a Gnome who was trying to create something else totally ... at the moment I've mentioned 'made of a substand that seemed to be repelled from other objects'. He didnt mean to make it, so he threw it out in disgust ... he was even more disgusted when the balls inside started bouncing and kids started playing with them.
In any case ... I'm looking for a gnomish word that the gnome might use to call this 'substance'. (The earth equivalent I'm thinking of is something along the lines of rubber) ...
In the first post in the New Gnomic Vocabulary Here! thread, I can see the following
sol - globe/sphere
kigi - things/stuff
mirim - reflect/bounce.
It isn't exactly necessary, but might be a nice touch.
Any help appreciated

Hi Dek,
I didn't find the meaning "to bounce" for mirim anywhere, although I like the connection between "reflection" and "bouncing" you're making there.
Nonetheless, I would like to suggest something different, just because it came to my head:
I suggest the gnome called his substance "gnogum".
Component words:
gno - substance (see
here
, under nouns)
gabumbim - to bounce [an old gnomish word, loved by gnomish children for its onomatopoetic and tongue-twisting qualities; just discovered by Shabakuk]
Hence
gno-gabumbim
: "substance that bounces". Shortened to:
gnogum
.
"Gnogum" could, since then, also have taken on another meaning: "anything that seems useless but for which a surprising purpose is discovered" - an experience that more than one gnomish alchemist might have had.
Any good?
Shabakuk
PS: Doesn't your gnome inventor need a name, by the way?
PPS: Glad you're back!

gnogum sounds great to me, Shabakuk.
Thanks
It almost needs an entry ... the Gnogum Gnomish Industry full of things invented by accident that were considered to be useless.
Yes ... I should get around to naming that fellow, I suppose.
Any thoughts on a name for him?
And I'm pleased to be back

You want a name for the gnomish inventor? How about:
Efrim Rignirsh
.
The first name would be derived from ertef-warim (forest-walker), the second from irig-nirsh (rabbit-stream). The names don't have anything to do with rubber, but then, why would they?
Oh, and about gnogum: by extension, a gnogum could also be a child who is widely thought to be a never-do-well or lazy bone, but who unexpectedly comes up with a brilliant invention, or with a solution to a problem that has defeated people of better reputation.

Hi Dek,
I couldn't resist another name idea, in case you found 'Efrim Rignirsh' too random.
What about Kazamir Kautzuk?
Also, I'm going to post "gabumbim" in the Gnomish Vocabulary additions, if you don't mind, just so it doesn't get forgotten about.

Thanks for those names, Shab and for adding the words into the Gnomish language thread.
I like both of those names ... hmmm which one to use.
