The Rahaz Dath desert ... such a harsh land.  As I travelled with the Shendar I was humbled by their strength in this arid landscape.  Every part of my body ached ...except for my feet....they did not ache..... they screamed in pain...biting sand rubbing agianst my skin.  As we travelled I had only one thing in mind..one goal...the giant mass of rock, snow, and lava that stood before us....the Norong Sorno.  The Norong Sorno represented civilization, represented the ocean that would be found nearby, represented relief.

comments welcome

Thanks Seeker! :D

Well, it looks still not as high as it looks in my mind, but that seems a nearly impossible task. I tried long enough and didn't manage to achieve it either.

I have two requests still.

The volcano should be entirely black, apart from the snow cap. I know , the description doesn't say it (I should have written some more for you before you started), but it was the name giver for our black colour name.

I would like to have a more pronounced caldera, so that it is not possible to look into it from afar. Now it looks, as if lava could emerge and flow down on this side, to the northeast, but in our time it should only flow down to the west towards the sea.

I need to have a closer ook when I'm more awake...

I have to agree with Talia. It seems to look a bit small to me. It might be because of the really detailed close-up of the dunes nearest the 'painter', which seems to reduce the scale of the mountain itself since it doesn't seem to be as far away.

The shape and terrain otherwise looks great though. Just the size (and color as Talia mentioned).

Also, might it be possible to add a small segment of Thalambath to the left of the volcano? Assuming that the direction we are viewing the Norong'Sorno is from its eastern side, then Thalambath would be visible along the southern (left) side. That might also help the size issue, too, as if the buildings look very small, then that will make the volcano look larger. The building essentially go up the side of the mountain for a way, and then start digging into the side of the mountain at the very northern edge of the city. You'd have to read the Thalambath entry to get a clearer image, if you decide to do this. I could also do a rough addition to your picture of how far up the buildings would go to give you an idea of what exactly I'm thinking of, if you'd like.

Alternatively, one could assume that the southern side has a ridge that covers up the buildings (I can see such a ridge by looking at your picture already, it could just be made more pronounced and higher up) so that one wouldn't see them from this angle. Your choice.

Actually.. no matter how purely black a rock is, it will always look more gray-ish from a distance. But i do agree what i was slightly underwhelmed with the size of the mountain itself ;)

Great comments guys. For sure the size has been problematic.  let me exlplain. The problem is making the volcano look big and still have it fully captured in the picture.  The best way to make something look big is to have a familiar object (tree, city, dragon person etc.) next to it for comparison.  Animal planet does this well when they focus in on an object and then pull the camera view back to show the large landscape.   However in this instance the Volcano as currently described is bigger than Mount Everest.  In comparison a person, dragon, tree or even Thalambath will be so small that you will not be able to notice it or even be able tell what it is.  Thus losing the advantage of the comparison.

Also to fit the whole thing in the picture the volcano has to be far, far, away.  This means I need to mute the colors more to make it appear farther away and bigger The black rock will appear gray.  (the blacker the rock... the closer and smaller the volcano will appear)

Another tactic I will try is making it appear there is more  foreround between the viewer and the volcano.  The farther away I can make the volcano appear the bigger it will seem.

I will mess around and come up with another draft.

Good luck with that, Seeker. Having no landscape to play with except sand, it must be a nightmare trying to show depth of field.

Maybe reducing the size of the dunes in the foreground would help? They look large and hence detract from the size of the mountain. IMHO Reducing their size and increasing their numerical values throughout might help. Maybe softening them down so that there is little to no definition would add a sense of distance? heart

Difficult picture this, indeed. Wanted to mention the perspective thing as well, but you've already expressed that very well yourself, Seeker... In a pretty much deserted land it's difficult to put something into perspective. One might consider showing something in the foreground which makes it clearer, even if one cannot see many details, like a caravan from above or something - thought it's really difficult to do that in the right size with still recognizing what it stands for and use it to get the perspective right... Tough, tough!

Anyway, you get an aura +1 from here for this one and the Shendar pic as well!  thumbup

Files have been replaced again, but the question remains how long this will last. SMF support will have a look at the security problem.

It has been hacked. The third time in 3 days. I need to replace the changed files again (won't happen before evening) - and then see what the SMF support recommends as a strategy.
