I am a relatively new moderators for the Miscellaneous forum.  As the moderator I try to keep up with what is being developed and encourage the writers to respond timely and eventually get their entries complete.  However every once in a while a good idea seems to be left abandoned and the author seems to have gone innactive on the site.  In a couple of cases I have tried to PM the person to see if they were interested in finishing the entry but received no response.

How long should we wait for an inactive member to return before letting someone else finish a good idea that they started but never finished?

I guess this has been discussed a few times already. Basically you could say as a rule of thumb: If some months have passed and you tried to contact the author and there's still no response then the work can be handed over to someone else who's interested - unless the work is very personally connected to a certain person (e.g. a longterm member) and there are indicators that we'll hear from this person later.

I would say that depends on the individual.  Coren sometimes has lengthy absences, as sometimes do I.  I would hate to think that our ideas would be hijacked.  (assuming any of my ideas are considered "good" :P)  Bard Judith just had one, as did Tharoc, and Alysse has been noticeably absent, so it can happen to anyone.

A newbie who splashed in, then splashed out just as quick, I'm not sure the same courtesy should be extended, though I think there should be a grace time given.  No idea is "essential" so time really should not be a factor.  Personally, a newbie who came in for a few weeks then left, I would give probably a year.  We are dealing with  the propriety (morally and ethically, not legally) of someone's ideas, and we shouldn't be too quick to pick them up and run with them, especially since nothing here is that vital to the site as a whole.

When I did the Remusian rewrite, Timeras (the original developer) had not logged in for over three years.  Then, halfway into my rewrite, he showed up out of the blue.  Luckily, he was happy with the direction I was taking the tribe, so had no issues with it.  But, if he did have problems with it, it might have become an uncomfortable situation.

So, if you are looking at things that were left unfinished a couple of months ago, then I think that is too soon.

Just my opinion, and of course is worth little. :)

Good guidance, makes sense.

My personality likes to see things completed and done, but I think Alt hit it on the head:

Good job you can't see my WIP file, Seeker. You'd have a fit!  :P

You mean this one Tharoc (you are on my naughty list  angry)?  I bought a green robe just for your special party but alas....

Quote
Aims for 2009 - Stuff I intend to complete this year

The Gates of Hell'wrung (working title) - Masterwork.
At least 4 entries directly connected to my Masterwork (details pending).
Re-writes/updates of the Orc Tribes.
Re-writes/updates of Orcen Religion. (Major expansion to follow later)
Tribal Body Modifications of Santharia & Sarvonia. (Hopefully illustrated by myself)
Pyrates, Privateers, and Merchant-Reavers of the Northern seaways.  (I've already made several abortive attempts at this one. This time, it's personal!).
Catch-up with and maintain the Northern Sarvonian Herbarium and Bestiary stickies.
Continue to develop the new Warg breeds with Garrett. To include several new entries related to the Warg as a species. (Don't ask, I can't say!)

Smaller stuff I hope to squeeze-in around my other projects, if time allows
Nightbloom - small, flowering plant for Garrett.
Luminite - a joint project with Deci.
Expand on the Cha'Morta-oc with a full entry.
The Daughters of Ch'oan (an almost Masterwork sized undertaking. I'll probably only get to make a start on this one. Unless I can coax Alysse into helping me.......)
The Watchtowers of Caaehl'heroth.
Expand on Orcen culture. Weapons/armour, food, music/instruments, ceremonys/rites etc.
Start to compile The Pantheon of Orcen Gods & Goddesses.

Ideas for the future

Blazing Dawn Bush  (idea - with a nice love story/myth attached)
Taenish Plant. (one of my very first ideas. Judy liked it, so I guess I'll have to do it someday!)
Septimus Smallpiece - person entry
Ludd da Sprynnge - inept Dwarven inventor of the Brownie-powered tattoo device, the Multi-plough and the Windmill-powered paddle ship. Also the Telling-bone and Elektrickery, and Closer-upper lenses - person entry (may seek Judy/Mannix/Morden's help)
Orc Nuts/balls
Slyggs (& Snurls?) - an overview
DonKor Leoni, the Knukkulz Brothers, Ma Scarponi, Bony Toni Scarponi et al

Nay, nay and thrice nay, Seeker! Not that one. That one is but a list of things to do.

The one I'm talking about is a folder in my pc positively crammed with things I've started but not finished, ideas, notes, research etc. There are several versions of the same entry, partially finished, multiple files relating to pretty much the same topic but not yet collated, and K'han'uck knows what else.

No, my friend, you don't want to be looking in there.

All the things you see in my 'To do' list will, eventually, get done. At some point. Probably. I think.

Oh, and I need to add the Write-typer, or Right-typer, to Ludd's list of failed devices.

*Sigh* see how easy it is!

Tharoc- I am sure that your PC files are organized just as I would expect an orc to organize them.  So your right, I don't want to be lookin there.   angry angry Dubly crusty stare for you.

Deklitch- I have already prepared my journey towards the Eight Winds Bay area.   Will your party be soon I hope?  I see you seem to waiting on comments (let me bump it for you)  Tell Tharoc how it feels to be almost done with your Masterwork.

Why's everyone in such a rush to get me to do my Masterwork?

Some folk are quite content just pottering about, y'know.

In truth, I know myself too well. When I reach a certain level of competancy in anything I do, I suddenly lose interest and look for something else to try. I don't want to risk that with Santh.  :)

*looks at Tharoc and starts trembling*

Are you sure you aren't at least part Erpheronian at some point in your past, Tharoc ... then again ... I don't know for sure that my mother *wasn't* an orc or an ice elf ...

That sounds so much like me ... the whole thing about reaching competency in something and then losing interest in it.

*Me hands a tin foil hat to Tharoc*

*Takes hat, sniffs it, then stuffs it in his mouth and chews.*

To be completely honest with you all, I have absolutely no plans to start a Masterwork in the forseable future. I'm just not ready, despite Mira chewing my ear off at Mir'Th Moot 09 about that meaning I am ready. (He talks in braille, y'know!)

I could have just added 'Masterwork' to the title of my Eanian Warg entry last year and no-one would have batted an eyelid, but that would have been cheating. Besides, even that entry will pale beside what I see in my mind as being a 'proper' Masterwork. Unfortunately, I have neither the time nor the mental wherewithall to even consider such an undertaking right now.

Sorry to disappoint, but there you have it.

Seeker takes out a bit o parchment, it has bits of writing all over it with things like
-Don't trust orcs-
-Orcs stink-
and
-be careful about eating small brown nuts-

he turns the parchment over and finds a small blank space and adds
-never poke an orc with a small stick!-

Turning to Wargrider he simply states "We bother you about your Masterwork because we like you.  And we consider you a "full member" anyway. Ya big lughead." grin

In my opinion (of which, those who know me, know that I have several) a Masterwork is something that is as much about you as it is about Santh.  It has to be a reflection of you, something that you are proud of.  That does not mean it has to be a huge entry, or overly in depth, but something that means something special to you; that you will look back on and be proud of.  If you don't feel it yet, don't be pressured to do it.  Do it slowly, piece by piece, if that is your wish.

To be quite honest, the perks of Member Status are more symbolic than practical.  I love being to be able to say I'm a Member, but it hasn't changed anything as far as my role goes around here.  I've not been taught the secret handshake.  I don't have a key to the Executive Washrooms.  (in fact, they make me use the Texaco Station across the street... a misunderstanding resulting after a large taco and burrito lunch that is best left unspoken)

But... the one thing I do have is a strong sense that my Masterwork, my Remusian Entry, is something I can look back on with pride.  I know the work put into it, the many hours researching, reading and net surfing (porn aside) that went into it.  It did not have to be so big, so involved, but my personality would not have allowed it to be anything but.  That is simply me, and need not define anyone else's Masterwork.  But, when I look back on the entirety of my submissions here, I want that entry to stand out above all others.  That is my Masterwork.  In my mind, it will stand alone.

If that is how you feel, Tharoc, my green friend, then hold onto that thought.  Do your Masterwork on your own terms in your own time.  It is, afterall, your Masterwork.

Ah, too bad that internet is so restricted in China, Ferra. Can't be much fun surfing the web that way if Big Brother's watching you... Hope you enjoy your stay nevertheless!

Hi, dear Arti and other developers!

This year I am in China and cannot use any Google services including YouTube. For this reason I stopped uploading new Nepris videos. I can also not read any comments there.

It just crossed my mind that this information might be useful to you.

Cheers
