A Mer-kiss.  A kiss that gives the non water breather the ability to breathe for a short period of time so that the merfolk couldn't leave you for long.  (Though, merfolk being what they are, many accounts of disaster have been documented by a merfolk getting distracted and swimming off leaving their charge suddenly unable to breathe and a hundred fore underwater)

Maybe we could even have some shadowy individual or group of individuals who sell potions that they claim will allow one to breathe underwater, but they disappear after being paid for the potions by the gullible ...

That would be a Macanti thing to do I think. Sell snake oil and crocodile tears?

I've already had these thoughts  grin

The Tarshiinites of Nybelmar use a highly sophisticated piece of technology called a 'Tugaru' to breathe underwater. Its mainly a helmet made from glass, with pouches of a special sponge. These sponges allow water to become breathable, though they eventual saturate and need to be replaced from time to time.

Said Tarshiinities also drink a chemical solution which raises their body temperature temporarily, allowing them to survive the cold depths of the sea.

They are referred to in a couple of my entries...
