This is very beautifully done, eye-opening in its range, and will no doubt be immensely useful for artists and writers alike, Judith! It should be an overview entry, methinks. My only critique is that I can't see all the example pictures you've put together, because the ones to the very right are outside the range even of my relatively wide screen. Would it be possible to provide the picture collection in a link (rather than in the post itself)?

Much appreciated! It's not as dramatic but definitely shows up better. (sweeps the Sage a curtsey of thanks)
I simply don't think of such things as I HAVE a lovely widescreen monitor now (gloat gloat)....

Thanks, Sage.
I like the term "Burrowmier", by the way. Is it your invention, Judith?

Tis! Most of the style terms are, actually, as we seemed to need them, but I've tried to make them all arise rather naturally from the language, so that most have their own built-in mnemonics. 'Dior' was just a lovely coincidence, and 'Burrowmier' was a pun I couldn't (as I rarely do) resist. Glad to see it appreciated!

Hmmm... Guess we've had this discussion already before a while ago...
Main thing is: What exactly will we do with these styles? As far as I remember there exists not only this illustrated version (which BTW also serves as a good quiz: Which picture was used here?), but also various more in-depth descriptions. This seems to be a bit of a mixture between serious definitions and tongue in cheek stuff, there are also Earthen terms used in these pictures here. Also, if we put this on site we need to think on how the pictures are going to be displayed.
So, question: Do we aim for putting it in the Compendium? In that case of course the direct Earthen references would need to be dropped - allusions like 'Dior' are still ok, though, we can't have 'Sixties' however. - Or should the tongue in cheek factor dominate, then we could still put it in a special section. Or is it mainly meant as a developer's reference only? Questions, questions...
As for the graphical representation: Rather than square blocks we could make a long bar, with triangles, but together, showing an aspect, one pointing up, one down etc. representing the frame. That we could have the bars for each style put in an entry without cluttering it too much.
Thoughts, ideas, proposals?

I think if there goes an entry with it about styles in Caelereth those could be used (in any form). An introduction about styles (what the entry is about) and then a short (more or less) description, where and when this style was used, introduced by whom etc. Even importance and special occasions could be added.
No problem
Those small words (sixties) were for our understanding only, I think.

Sorry, do I understand that you want to slash up my thumbnails even smaller? It's already a bit difficult to get a sense for each style just from the few samples given.... (sigh).... As I visualize your proposal, you want alternating triangles: something like this, perhaps... but why not just rearrange the squares?

Well, the trouble is always the technical side (screen resolution and stuff) and how that fits to the design, Judy...
Here's some reasoning behind the suggestion:
For example: Having six pictures displayed to the left like you did here for one means that we have six squares there, which opposed e.g. to a round shape with borders at our overviews looks a bit cluttered. Especially if we put all the styles on one page, so we'd have loads of these six squares all over the page.
The other, the main problem is: Whenever we display a picture on the left or right side of the text, we need to make sure that we have enough text to display, so that picture and text height are nicely balanced. It fits all perfectly on the example you posted. Text and pictures put together have approximately the same height. Or there should be more text than picture. Otherwise you get huge spaces on the page, stretching all over it. Remember that browser resolutions can differ considerably, and by enlarging the width of the page you can make a well meant design quite ugly.
We can help us here however by e.g. adding the caption to the text part e.g., so that side automatically becomes larger. Still we'd have rather unaesthically looking squares. One could e.g. put them left and right from the text though, perhaps, to give it a new twist. Hmmm...
The reasoning behind the triangles would be that we can package it in a better frame and display it in one long centered picture, regardless of the text size, which would be above or below it. But it could also work put right next to it the way you did it here. However, the triangles you made here are rather small and pointed - you could make them much broader, allowing much more to be seen. You could get caption and examples all in one row, text below, regardless of the resolution problems. But good design is always tricky...

Ok, back to this one... While we have some difficulties to get some technical things right, I guess it's about time to get it done
First of all: The actual entry to these style pictures was posted
here
. I assume this is also the last version. If we want to get it up as a regular entry, we'd need a typical entry Overview/Introduction.
Once that is done there shouldn't be a problem in getting the text on site, without the pictures if necessary. It would at any rate by an important step.
As for the pics: The most important thing for me would be to avoid the rather ugly looking squares and still show enough of the images to identify the style while also fitting to the page in different resolutions.
So how about a more "flowing" transition" between the single pics by making more skewed squares (see very rough example pics below where I just marked the places where I'd separate the pics). Note the alternating highlight of the separator as well, also a means to add a bit to the "style". At the beginning and the end of the picture row we could fade these pics out to black, so that they look better integrated in the background. These graphics would be displayed below the caption, which would also be a graphic (see Judy's example). What do you think?
Here's the very rough example pic:
P.S. Pic would need to be a tad smaller maybe, in order to fit to smaller screen resolutions, but I hope the basic idea gets across.
