Tutorials Request - What do you want to learn about?
«

Hello fellow artisans!
I'll be creating some guides on color & light and composition. I was just thinking however, what is it that you guys want to know about?
Either about subjects I just listed, or new ones. It can be anything from program related to formal techniques to an effect. I can't say I'm the one that will answer all, but I'll do my best and hey, maybe someone else on the board just might know that thing you've been wondering about to increase your knowledge or workflow.
There aren't that many tutorials listed on the site, and the problem with many you can find on the net is that they are short and really not all that informative. They touch on a subject but they often do now tell you about the underlying knowledge that precedes that abiliity.
I saw the Seekerets and Ta'lia's Tute link WIP, but are there more?

Hey Shayan, nice to have you back!
I'm about to collect more tuts - and organise them, but so far we don't have many.
I'm thinking about what might be the most useful tut. I had recently problems with water, or looking through water and depicting it without taking the sharpness out of a picture. I've got some ideas, but maybe you have better ones?
If you have the time, please take a look at our discussions
here
and
here
Currently I'm struggling with clouds. There are tuts, and I have produced some nice clouds myself, but this time I'm just not content with the outcome.

I've found several tutes but I know there's one on transparent water in a book I own either digitally or physically...it had a wonderful explanation of light and how it reacts to water surfaces, including reflection, absorption and transparency. I'm keeping at it, because the book I had believed it was in showed no tute sadly so give me a few more days, I really hope it will turn up. If that all fails I'll end up making one myself tying in the Colour and Light one somewhere.
Do you still want some general advice on the Waterleaf? Considering it was declared finished already (not that I mind)
I'm also looking into the clouds
Do you have a WIP with them?

Shayan, I would be glad if you could give some advice to the waterleaf. I always want to improve my pics. Though I'm quite satisfied with it right now, I wanted to address that flatness Shaba mentioned at a later time. (By setting the shades a bit more apart from the fish etc, maybe that would give some more depth.) Right now I'm busy with another pic.
I'm not at my comp next week though, staying with my parents again, so I can't work on the pictures. Gives you time to look at them
After two evenings painting clouds and deleting them, where I thought I would make some more progress on the Shrine pic, after reading Fiorellina's tut, several on the net and watching you tube videos and looking at a dozen photographs of a cumulus cloud, I decided, that this one has to do it. But I'm not happy with it, for I don't know, how I did this one, except that I tried out every brush
. Not that I have not painted some clouds already (the pic in Toran's Falls), but there it was easier.
Attached, any proposals for improvement? I might add some yellow, to have some more sunlight in it.

What program do you use? That way I may also be specific for brush suggestions apart from general crits. I'll try to get something on here on monday

I used for this one Photoline32, it is a programm similar to photoshop, but I can't tell you the differences, I'm too unscilled to spot them
*points at signatur*
No need to hurry, I can't do anything next week.
Thank you

I use Photoshop, so I wouldn't mind Photoshop tutorials
But often the same technique also works with other programs - if you find the right icons for the various functions...

I'm sorry for the delay. I didn't forget, but I need to finish some other things first. I hope to get around to it on Sunday.
The Photoshop tutorials are noted! I know by far the most about Corel Painter, but I'm relearning photoshop and it has some pros over painter (and vice versa)

No worries! I'm back on Sunday also and would not have been able to appreciate your work!
Corel is great, I have it a year now (a Christmas present , but the year before this one), but..
"I fought the software, and the software won!"
So I use still photoline32

I guess with enough determination you can use any app and hardware to draw (ipad + fingers, mouse+ windows paint etc). So the software is not so much an issue, tutorials for painting in any medium are probably just as useful as photoshop specific ones.
About your cloud - I think it looks rather good already. Changing the hue (yellowish light you suggested) will not change anything about realism. It looks like midday cloud right now, due to the cool/neutral light. Which is perfectly fine.
I think it's2 things where it can be improved:
1. the overal shape of the cloud
2. the edges.
3. other clouds
1: remember that clouds have volume and weight, they more or less "lay" on top of layers of air, so are more squished/flat at the bottom, and more "fluffy" on top. Of course the shape perceived depends on the viewpoint and angle. In your picture it seems to be more of a "tele lens" view, so the cloud is further away and the persepective more compressed (this being comparable to photographs). So to make the shape more believable you could try to make it larger at the bottom / or smaller at the top. But only slightly, it looks good already.
2. edges - I guess with the type of "fluffy" cloud you depicted here, much more edge variation would be realistic. Ragged, "torn" edges would make this look better. Use low opacity brush to do this - cloud edges are usually thinner, thus showing some background sky through. Brake the edge lines, make the contour line like a couast - almost unlimited in length, while keeping overal shape as is. This needs to be balanced right, so you will not end up with a shapeless, smudged lump
3. Adding more clouds in the vicinity would help to make any cloud shape believable. I sometimes observe the sky for an hour or so, looking at the ever changing clouds - there hasn't been a day with clouds I'd seen before, all are unique and often weird to the point of being "unrealistic", so I sometimes take pictures of the more weird ones
I can recommend this (calming) excersise! Any cloud observed on it's own might look strange, but might fit in with other clouds around it.
So overal - great result already, with a bit work can be made much more realistic. Hope this helps a bit
So go look for tutorials for painters, do not restrict yourself to a medium or application, it will broaden your understanding. I find that traditional painting articles/tutorial explain why we see things the way we see them and why they look like they do, than the digital ones, which are usually just focused on hard and software tricks.
Good luck and keep at it!!

Thanks, Faugar!
I will try to follow your advise as closely as possible - and I'll have to find a place for this cloud elsewhere then, not only in the shrine picture...
I looked at photographs of clouds - and they probably were done with a zoom..
