Hello, everyone. I stumbled across this website while looking through the fantasy worlds list on Wikipedia. I have been searching for a world creation page of this caliber for years. I am currently employing myself as a fantasy cartographer/world creator, and I would rather like to join this "Santharian dream". I would prefer to be assigned a new region to go in depth upon; preferably one that is mostly unknown, since I don't know all of the ins and outs of Santharia. I assure you, I can do whatever you need me to. I enjoy all of this greatly. Thank you for your time,

Welcome OthrysSilfer! (you might want to put a space in there or something)

So, one snag in your plan: New areas aren't open right now, I'll run down the areas currently under development for you though. You don't need a huge, in-depth knowledge of the world to get started. That develops naturally  grin

Southern Sarvonia/United Kingdom of Santharia: Most developed area. There's special focus on the province of Manthria at the moment, so people would be happy to see you developing there.

Northern Sarvonia: Less developed, though there are people working up there right now. There's a bit of a chance to go in and do cool stuff, but the folks working up there do have plans and it's easier in the long run to ask them if new things will fit.

Nybelmar: Technically under development, big and open, but there's no one paying attention to it now, which means that developing there is not a practical thing to be doing. Because there's not anyone to review the work that focuses on that area.

Now, this is all assuming that you need a regional focus for development. Seeker and I run the miscellaneous forum which doesn't have a specific region that it runs with. We've also got a big long list of weapons that need developing over there.

If you're not keen on that, the Bestiary is always a good place to start, they also have a list of things that need developing, which would give you a decent framework to build a first entry in.

The Herbarium isn't terribly active but the Bard is around at the moment, which means you have a better chance than usual of excellent comment. There's another list for new people to try their hands on.

Hello from me as well, OthrysSilfer! wave

I'd like to emphasize what Valan already said: It's important to embed what you'd like to contribute in our world. Thus you should find a place where you think you can expand on something and give it your own touch. Otherwise every newcomer would make his/her own isle in the middle of nowhere, and that doesn't really form a consistent world - know what I mean? ;) If you pick an e.g. existing place where you want to start you have to research that area a bit, thus you get into the world, can pose the right questions, and end up with a first entry which makes sense in context. And thus you become a proper developer - as the next thing could be to develop another aspect what you've touched on in your first entry, and you're a Santharian Dreamer in no time :D

The Bestiary sounds the most appealing to me right now. At some point (after I read the majority of the detail threads about the world itself) I'd like to help on some culture-building stuff (if that's possible). For the bestiary, do I just create my own in-depth descriptions of a creature, post it, and get it approved? If so, that's a pretty easy process.

Oh, one more question. For Nybelmar, since it's large and open, and no one else is currently working on it, isn't it open for new cultures?

Wrong on that count. The developers in Nybelmar have a very precise sort of framework established. A sort of scaffolding, if you will, around which others can build. The shape of things is already decided in some ways.

Welcome. :)  My advice, start small, with a few herbarium or bestiary entries, and get a feel for an area, or areas.  Ask lots of questions, do a TREMENDOUS amount of reading and research, and in time you will naturally gravitate to your niche.  You will find a place where your ideas and your own personal style will be dearly needed.  If you try to force it, especially too early upon arrival here without the deep understanding of the Santharian World, you will forever be trying to push square pegs into round holes.

Just my opinion from someone who has not only been in your shoes, but seen others in the same boat over the years. :)

Welcome, Othry!

I can't add much to the advice of the others above as far as creating entire new places/cultures is concerned. the idea that everything connects to everything else is key here, so we like people to demostrate a good knowledge of existing ideas before making great big new things.
Mainly, though, I was attracted like scoffle to sweetbeans by mention of the bestiary. It's been my cheif playground since arriving here so I can't wait to see what you come up with. So take a look at the list in the bestiary forum (I beleive Valan in his infinite wisdom has provided the link) of gaps that we already know need refilling, or if you've got your own idea for a creature that doesn't exist yet, do that! the development templates are, I beleive, to your left, and furthter left than that is the compendium where you can see what's already on site, taking up space and sometimes eating people.

Hello Othry!

I'm Agran, an apprentice who's been on an unofficialeave of absence for far too long. I understand where your coming from, when you start off, I think everyone wants to have a place of their own. My suggestion is do as Valan said and start off on a smaller thing. I started off with a plant and just reseraching it helped me understand alot about the world. Expect alot of corrections your first time around though, its what helps us learn.

Files have been replaced again, but the question remains how long this will last. SMF support will have a look at the security problem.

It has been hacked. The third time in 3 days. I need to replace the changed files again (won't happen before evening) - and then see what the SMF support recommends as a strategy.

Arti, could you maybe take a look at the RPG board? I got a message from my anti-virus program and now I can't access the column on the right with the list of current threads and the shoutbox. Thankies :)
