I got permission from Valan earlier this week to speed this team project along by taking it up personally.  Though there is still much to do before this is ready for submission, I've already found that I need assistance in a few areas.  These specific areas needing attentions are the sections listed in red.  They need to be reviewed by entry authors because they had very incomplete references.  The two names that pop to my head first as having dyes highlighted in red are Talia and Judy, but if all area developers could quickly scroll through to see if any of their entries are marked I'd greatly appreciate it.  Thanks guys.

Also, if anyone sees a dye or an ink that I've missed please let me know and I'll be sure to include it.

Types of Dyes and Inks in Caelereth

Plants:

Allia Berry – This plant bares a dark purple berry cluster that, though poisonous, can be used for dying clothes and for cosmetics. The vibrant dye produced by the juice of the Allia berries is predominantly used by the Caltharian tribe. In autumn, Caltharian women and children may be seen colleting these berries in baskets and aprons just for this purpose.  Due to the dangerous nature of the allia berry, the antidote for its poison procured from the Brisulivan bush is kept close at hand during gathering season to revive the curious rascal who attempts to pop one of the juicy fruits his mouth.

Location - The Allia can be found growing throughout central Southern Sarvonia in heaths, meadows, and near forests.  They can be commonly found in the Heath of Jernaís, the Aurora Fields, the Heath at Salazar, around the city of Voldar, the Thaelon forest, Vontron, the Shivering Woods, the Quallian Forest, the Istarin, Paelelon and the Almatrar. The Allia does not fair well in exceptionally warm climates so cannot be found anywhere below the Tolonian Heath.  For some unknown reason, the plant refuses to take to garden soil and will produce few, if any, berries when grown in this environment

Alrik’ran Root – Though its primary use is as a medicinal herb, the root of the Alrik’ran plant has been found to produce a beautiful pale blue dye when its sap is extracted.  This particular property of the bush was discovered completely by accident when blue-stained teeth were discovered as a side effect to its use by Shendar women as a chewing product to aid their menstrual cramps.  The tribe, which already had a well established dying industry for cloth, hair and temporary body ornamentation, quickly adopted the root for their own use and added the soothing color to the others they produced.

Location – The Alrik’ran grows exclusively on the Narfost Plain, one of the Shendar inhabited lands between the Ráhaz-Dáth and the Sharadon forests.  The bush is almost always found near patches of Lorahough flowers as both plants prefer the coolest parts of the fire-covered plains.  As of yet, the use of Alrik’ran dye has not spread outside of the Shendar as a result of its unique environmental requirements and because it was generally forgotten about by other peoples when it was discovered that the Evening Princess Flower could produce the same beneficial effects for women without the humiliating blue-coloring of the teeth.

Alth'tiert Plant – The Alth’tiert plant is one of the major imports of the Helvet’ine who use the leaves of this plant to make a golden dye for their clothing and rugs as well as by the Lyr’Teimor Kulgim men as an ink to color their ritual scars that mark the completion of one of the tribe’s right of passages.  After that year’s hunting party returns after having successfully killed a Cartashian, each participant uses the beast’s claw to gouge three deep cuts into their right shoulders.  Along with several other products used to ensure the formation of a dark scar, Alth’tiert is also rubbed into the wound to ink a golden hue into the mark.

Location - The Alth’tiert plants grow exclusively in southwestern Northern Sarvonia on and around the base of the Celeste Mountains. They seem to prefer to remain relatively spread out, but can usually be found in large quantities around vents that lead into the heart of volcanoes.

Arne'pheran Tree Bark - The dark, interlaced ridges of the outer bark of the Arne’pheran Tree can be peeled off and used to produce a brown dye.  Since this outer bark serves as the plant’s primary defense mechanism, peeling it off a living tree is discouraged as it usually brings about death.  The production and use of this dye is quite common throughout Northern Sarvonia, though each tribe seems to have its own recipe for thickening the extract into a usable dye.

Location - The Arne'pheráns are quite common in Northern Sarvonia, especially in the continent’s larger forests. Small variations in appearance exist among tree of different forests, but overall they appear quite similar throughout this huge swathe of territory.

Blackmoss – The juice of the Blackmoss plant forms a deep, inky black liquid when mixed with acid that is so strong that it can be used as ink or dye for clothing.  An acidic liquid must be added to this extract to give the dye the dark black color it is so famous for.  Because it is so cheap, vinegar tends to be the additive of choice for large scale manufacturers of the dye.  For those whom cannot stand the smell of vinegar, Kitrauhre juice or urine is another viable option, though the latter tends to be avoided as most consumers find it repulsive.  The lifespan of clothes dyed or parchments written using Blackmoss ink is rather limited, however, as it has a tendency to fade with time.  Despite this, the low cost of Blackmoss products still make them one of the most preferred dyes and inks across Sarvonia.

Blackmoss is also used by the Kaaer’dar’shin half-orcs as a body paint for tribal markings and temporary tattoos.  To create this concoction, the blackmoss extract is mixed with a small amount of tree sap.  Kept at warm temperatures to lower its viscosity, this blend can be applied to the skin and, when it cools, will adhere firmly for a short period of time.

Location – As the Blackmoss requires a very specific set of conditions to thrive, it is a rather rare plant.  The moss prefers the climate of the northern portions of the Santharian Kingdom and will only grow in light forests.  Since Blackmoss requires some direct rhainfall, it will not take to forests with heavy canopies and foliage, but as it also requires other flora to hold water in the soil for its use, it cannot grow it isolation.

Bloodbloom Flower – If crushed, the blood red liquid emitted by the flower of this plant can be used by artists and weavers to create a vibrant red color.  Given the legends surrounding the plant, however, its dye remains relatively unpopular in Sarvonia as no individual wishes to be seen wearing a garment stained with the blood of their forefathers.  The dyes largest market is among actors, who find a pool of Bloodbloom petal juice gives an unsettlingly realistic portrayal of real blood.

Location – The Bloodbloom is a very particular plant, and thus will only grow in Greyrock Maw, in the Tandala Highlands.  More specifically, the flower have a tendency to rim Caeltakkar’s Keep.

Carroots – A crispy, juicy root typically eaten raw or boiled, the Carroot is supposedly able to dye skin orange when consumed in large quantities.  The best known case of this phenomenon is that of Gerisa of the Glitra, a famous Centoraurian entertainer in the city of Milkengrad.  The deep orange color of her skin was written off by her jealous contemporaries as a paint or dye applied daily, however, modern researchers, such as the famed Bard Judith, believe it may have been the result of her Carroot-heavy diet.

Location – The Carroot is a relatively hardy plant and can be grown by famers in most regions of Caelereth with a temperate climate.  The vegetable seems to take best to slightly acidic soil, so it often thrives best in drained swamplands or recently burned fields.

Cavernfire Sap – the sap secreted by the leaves of the Cavernfire bush is used by the secretive Susilgerim Dwarves to make glowing dyes in a variety of colors.  The luminescent nature of the dye makes it especially useful as subterranean ‘light fixtures’ and as such it tends to be painted upon the walls of caverns and tunnels.  The color emitted by the Cavernfire Sap dye can be used to date its age.  When it is freshly created, the dye gives of a light yellow/green color, but, as it ages, fades to orange, then red and finally scarlet before it loses its glow.  This cycle usually takes about two to three months, though the lifespan of the dye can be increased by exposing it to other sources of light.

Location – The Cavernfire Bush is native to the caves running through the Imlith Mountains of Northern Sarvonia.  On rare occasions, the plant may also spread above ground, provided there is sufficient shade as sunlight seems to make it wilt.  In addition to these wild strains, the Susilgerim dwarves also cultivate the Cavernfire within their communities.

Fa'yale Flower – The  Fa’yale Flower is used by the Ash’mari barbarians to produce a highly viscous, deep red dye for use in tattoos.  To create this form of body art, knife is used to cut the flesh into the desired pattern and the dye is pressed into newly opened wound.  As the flesh begins to heal, it traps the red dye in the skin, permanently tattooing the individual.  The red dye is believed to serve as a representation of the blood gift offered to the gods when an individual chooses to undergo this ritual, and thus holds a special religious importance within the tribe.

Location – The bush that produces the Fa’yale flower is extremely particular about their environments, and thus only grows beneath the eastern shadows cast by the Southern Foothills.  It is speculated that the winds caught against the foothills trap an ideal amount of moisture and heat for plant growth in an otherwise inhospitably dry area.

Fireweed – Fireweed is noted most for the bright orange, yellow and red dyes it produces and thus is very coveted by people all over Caelereth. Since these brilliant colors are much sought after by the wealthy, the export of dyes and colored cloth provide a major source of trade for Aeruillin.  Of all the continent’s tribes, the Nyvians are noted as producing the finest dyes through some unique, closely guarded process and thus corner the majority of the market.

Location - Fireweed can only be found growing naturally on the shores of Aeruillin, though some attempts have been made to cultivate it on the southern tip of Sarvonia. The aquatic plant likes extremely warm waters, so it is unlikely that it will flourish if grown anywhere else.

Flaming Star Flower and Leaves - the leaves and flowers of the Flaming Star Vine can be crushed into a powder that serves as a potent, vibrant red dye.  Though it is quite pricey, this particular dye is still widely used because even a small handful can be used to color over half a dozen garments.  Garments dyed by Flaming Star powder are easily identified by the trained eye because of the brilliant fading patterns associated with it.  Despite the fact that small amounts of the dye are quite potent, it does not seem to take well to clothing and will fade to orange and yellow when washed repeatedly.  Always looking to turn a profit, skilled weavers have been able to use this to create beautiful multi-colored garments by washing and re-dyeing a single item repeatedly.

Location – The Flaming Star vine is known to grow mostly in the sandy soil of coastal areas and prefers temperate climates with warm, wet summers and cool dry winters.  As such, it can be found most commonly near Varcopas, the Nirmenith mountain range, and along the coasts of Nybelmar, Manthria, and Sanguia.

Glowcap Mushroom – A paste produced from powdering the Glowcap Mushroom is used as the base for a phosphorescent specialty paint that is a favorite of performers.  Because it is targeted for consumption by the theater, these paints sell best in large cities where actors are able to be supported.  In addition, there is also a smaller market for the paints for the more practical purposes of the layman.  These buyers tend to use the Glowcap paint to illuminate doorways and paths or apply it to tools to they can be more easily found.

Location – The Glowcap Mushroom grows in a number of Southern Sarvonia’s denser forests and overgrown swamps.  The plants have an aversion to sunlight so are almost always located in the shade of a large tree, buried beneath overgrowth or in areas containing perpetually dense mists.

Hrugchuk Grass – The Remusian tribe uses the fluid of the Hrugchuk grass to create a deep blue colored ink.  The ink is then used by the women to create the ceremonial tattoos they inscribe on their faces as a sign of maturity and beauty.

Location – Hrugchuk Grass grows in the northeastern corner of the Sarvonian continent where the land is covered in ice or snow year round.  The grass is also believed to grow in Cyhalloi.

Invilberry – The Invilberry is a dye used exclusively by the Shendar tribe of Southern Sarvonia.  Utilized to turn deepen the color of xazure-blue clothes, this particular dye is unique in that it only takes to clothes that have already been treated.  When applied to undyed garments, the berry appears to have no affect, but, when combined at varying intervals with xazure dye can create a range of deep blues and black coloration.

Location – The plant that produces this berry grows exclusively in Southern Sarvonia along the rim of the Open Woodlands.  Unlike many of the other plants that the Shendar harvest, the bush upon which the Invilberry grows seems to have an aversion to the dry heat of the desert and instead seems to prefer the rockier, wetter soils at the base of the mountains.

Ironwood Bark – Since it comes in a whole host of colors, the bark of the Ironwood tree is used to make a large variety of high quality dyes used by the Ashz-oc Orcs to re-color looted clothing.  This spectrum of dyes is also exported in large quantities by the tribe, and quite often fetches a very high price.  The orcs also use the dye to color tribal tattoos.

Location – The Ironwood tree is extremely rare and can only be found at one location in all of Caelerth: at the base of the volcano Mt. Emesz’gob in the Prominent range of Northern Sarvonia.  There is, however, evidence that long ago the trees also grew in great numbers on the Isle of Killyshmagost in the Quios chain.  Though it has not yet been attempted, it is possible that this forest could be regrown of Ironwood seeds are spread in the region.

Juk'lan Leaves – The leaves of the Juk’lan shrub can be used be used to make a dark brown dye so strong that it will color nearly anything and will never fade.  To create this dye, fresh leaves and twigs are placed into boiling water for two days.  On the third day, the mixture is placed through strainer to remove the solid debris and to allow the pure dye to collect in a separate container.

Location – The Juk’lan shrub is a hardy plant and can be found growing nearly anywhere in Northern Sarvonia where there is a sufficient amount of water.  As such it can be found growing from the Celeste Lowlands all the way up to the Icelands.

Larkentir Sap – The viscous sap of the Larkentir tree is known to color garments blood-red.  While there are a number of other sources of red dye available for use by weavers, Larkentir sap is unique in that it requires no preparation to be extracted.  Simply breaking a branch of this tree and rubbing the liquid that oozes out of it on a garment will permanently stain the cloth crimson.  It should be noted that the sap is quite acidic so clothes produced using Larkentir sap should be treated with an alkaline substance or put aside to settle before being sold to prevent burning and irritation of the skin.

Location – The tree is found growing exclusively in tightly clustered groups in the Shivering Woods of Southern Sarvonia.  The younger the tree used as a source for sap, the better for as the tree ages its sap flows less freely.

Lampstalk Pollen – The glowing pollen of the Lampstalk plant is used by a wide variety of tribes to make luminescent paint for rituals.  In general, Cavernfire paint is preferred over Lampstalk paint as the latter’s glow seems to fade quite rapidly.  Furthermore, the pollen of the Lampstalk has an annoying tendency to clothing, hair and skin, making it a general nuisance to work with.

Location – The Lampstalk is native to the temperate climates of mid-Sarvonia, however, it has been spread by cultivators south into the Santharian Kingdom where it has flourished in recent years.  In order to survive, the plant may receive approximately half a day of sunlight, meaning that it has a tendency to take to the sides of steep valleys and the edges of meadows so that it receives some shelter.  The Brownies have their own domesticated version of the Lampstalk plant.  Significantly smaller than the strains found in the rest of Sarvonia, the Brownies’ version grows exclusively in the Vales in which they make their homes.

Lowra Tree – When harvested by the Meladrhim Elves, the bark of the Lowra tree can be used to create a blue dye excellent at coloring spun wool and cloth.  Once the bark has been harvested, it is crushed into a fine powder and mixed into a pot of boiling water where it is allowed to simmer for three days.  By the forth day, most of the mixture’s water will have evaporated leaving a thin paste that, when strained to remove larger bark chunks, can be applied directly to material to color it.

Location – the Lowra tree is indigenous to Northern Sarvonia and tends to grow along the continent’s coasts.  Much like the Flaming Star Vine, it seems to take particularly well to these sandy soils and moist environments.

Nehtor’s Tears – The flower bulbs of this plant can be crushed into a paste and processed into a beautiful Udezra blue dye.  To produce this pigment, the flower of the Nehtor’s Tear is either crushed, producing a fine powder, or boiled to create a thick paste.  Both forms can then be either spread over fabrics or mixed into paints to dye them this pleasing blue color.

Location – Nehtor’s Tear is a very versatile plant and thus grows all over the Sarvonian continent.  It does tend to prefer climates that a susceptible to frost and have moist, sandy soil, however.

Me’hendi bush – The Shendar tribe Southern Sarvonia make a very versatile dye, known as hendi, from this plant that can range in color from bright yellow to dark brown.  The Shen-D’auras use hendi primarily as a body-paint.  Streaking the dye into their hair, members of this sub-tribe are able to temporarily turn their normally dark hair a deep red.  In addition, hendi is also applied to the skin of the hands, feet and face in elaborate patterns to create a beautiful assortment of temporary, multi-colored body ornaments.  The ability to create exceptionally appealing ornaments using this paint is held in high regard among the Shendar, making hendi painter one of the tribe’s most respected artistic professions.  Traditionally, the Sand People seem to prefer elaborate patterns of geometric shapes in their hendi ornaments, though rarely leaves, flowers and small animals are also depicted.

Location – The Me’hendi bush grows exclusively in the territory of the Shendar tribe of humans: the Rahaz-Dath Desert and the Narfost Plain.  Remarkably, the plant seems to flourish in these extremely hot environments with little yearly rainfall.

Poeritt Berry ¬– The berry of the Poeritt Weed is a favorite source for dye by the Meladrhim elves.  Though occasionally used for clothes, this plant is the primary ingredient used in making the grey ink for the tribe’s distinctive tattoos.  When each elf reaches mid-childhood, he or she is given a tattoo of interlocking lines to identify them as one of the Grey elves.  The creation of said tattoos is considered an art form and distinguishes them quite dramatically from all other elves.

Location – The Poeritt weed grows in a wide variety of Northern Sarvonia’s environments including valleys, hills, plains, heaths and the foothills of mountains.  It is most common, however, in the Peat Hillands, the Grasslands of Cahm’ha’dom, the Heath of Wilderon, the Wilshirer Heath, the Plains of Rilla, along the coasts and between the Shaded Forest and the Mountains of Oro.

Purple Cabbage - Purple Kail is a useful, though fugitive dye.  The attractive range of pinks, lavenders, and bluish-purples which can be obtained from the plant are unfortunately lost as soon as the cloth/garment is washed in heated water, even when made more colour-fast with a mordant such as alum.  Generally what this means for its usage is that the dye is reserved for fabric which is not at a high risk of staining and is thus not washed frequently, or is in small enough pieces to redye frequently.  Bright and pretty window curtains, for example, are popularly tinted with Kaildye, or decorative kerchiefs for a fairday.   It can also be used as a cosmetic agent to tint unguents and ointments used on lasses' lips and cheeks.   One well-known product which includes Purple Kail is the "Fairhaven Apothecaries' Rose and Raisin Balm for Lips", a sweetly-scented and sweetly-pink concoction sold in tiny ceramic pots...

Location – Like most other Kails, the Purple Cabbage prefers moderate to cold climates with moist soil.  This limits the plant’s natural growth to central and lower Northern Sarvonia.

There have been some attempts to grow Kail further south, in the New Santhala area.  Though the plant has been found to take to the soil, its growth is stunted and, as a result, its leaves are much less desirable.

Sipping Bush – The flower of this bush is often used to produce karikrimson colored cosmetics.  The bush’s blooms are primarily gathered to produce a lip colorant for women which some claim keeps the flower’s alluring scent.  This lip balm is most commonly used by unmarried girls looking to entice a suitor and by noble women hoping to command attention from the masses.  Common men, however, attempt to dissuade their wives from donning this cosmetic as it is though to ‘send the wrong signal’ if she is at the market alone.

Location – The Sipping bush tends to be found in large patches in Northern Sarvonia along freshwater rivers and lakes below the Icelands.  It is most commonly found along the Aden River, the Kharim River, the Ulaenoth River, the Camplyn River and by Lofty, Crystal and Ebony Lakes.

Redneep Juice – A range of purple to pink dyes can be made from the juice of the Redneep plant.  In addition to being used for cloth, the Redneep is used as a base for the creation of cheap cosmetics.  When its juice is mixed with water or truphull oil the plant can create a variety of shades of lip-color.  Less wealthy women dip their finger or a brush in this concoction and spread it across the lips to enhance their appearance.  In some instances the Redneep is also used to create a fine pink powder applied to the face as a substitute for blush.

Location – As the hardiest of all the Neep varieties, Redneeps can grow nearly anywhere in the Sarvonian continent provided they watered regularly.  The only exception to this rule are extreme environments, such as the Icelands or the Rahaz-Dath desert, which are inhospitable to nearly all flora.

Teki Tree Seeds – The Teki Tree has only one use that we know of other than consumption, which is for dying cloth the color red. When the pits are removed from the seeds, they can be crushed to produce a smeary paste that, when mixed with boiling water, transforms into a deep blood red dye.  Teki Tree dye is not widely used because it is well known to have a scent that is quite offensive to the nose.  Given the wide variety of other readily available sources of red dye, most dyers instead choose to work with a substance that does not assault their senses.

The Teki Tree’s berry also is used by the Ghereghut trolls of the Tandala Highlands as a hair dye.  Though they are quite famous for their blood red hair, it is a little known fact that the Cave trolls make use of cosmetic products to achieve this effect.  When young trolls come of age, their naturally dark hair is dyed using a paste made by crushing the Teki berry.  This form of dye is far from permanent, however, and thus must be reapplied quite regularly.

Location - This tree is grown mainly in the Santharian province of Enthronia, the location of its main market beside the dyers’ city of Carmalad.  Less healthy versions of the plant can be found further north in the province of Nermeran.  Teki trees tend to be grown in large farms owned by a single farmer.  Since the annual harvest for each tree tends to be low, it is not impractical for one individual to manage hundreds of trees without much difficulty.

Terirais berry – Using a secret process they refuse to share with the rest of the world, the Tiraelhon Sand Elves are able to produce a dye from the Terirais berry not only capable of staining cloth, but also dried grasses which seem to less readily absorb color.  The dye produced is a vibrant, energetic green that demands the eye’s attention.

Location – the Terirais tree can only be grown in Southern Aeruillin in the wide expanse of savannah between the Theranian Sea and the Sea of Tardulan.  It generally seems to grow close to Tiraelhon’s few permanent settlements in small groups.

Totit Leaf – The leaf of the Totit is used predominantly by the Sor’Inyt tribe to produce a green dye.  Though only widely available in Aeruillin, this particular dye is noted for being quite long-lasting and resistant to fading.  Members of the Sori’Inyt’s Kad’iyt group are primarily responsible for this dye’s manufacture.

Location – This extremely important Aeruillin plant grows primarily on the eastern side of the continent.  It seems to prefer an extremely hot, dry climate and thus thrives remarkably well in the areas deserts.

Truthelon Tree – The oil produced by the Truthelon tree is unique in that is serves as an ‘anti-dye’ of sorts.  Rather than provide a new shade to a garment, oil of this plant instead removes all traces of artificial coloring and reverts a piece of cloth back to its natural hue.  Though its primary use is in removing pesky stains from clothing, this product has also found significant use among dyers displeased with the outcome of their work.

Location – The Truthelon tree is native to the Western half of Nybelmar, in particular the underground Black Lakes of Trumatyreon.  As it subsists off of the regions unique rock-oil, it is incapable of growing anywhere else in Caelereth.

Sou’Cald Moss – The greyish blue dye produced from this moss is the major source of trade and income for the citizens of the Manthrian village of Holt.  Creating dye from the Sou’Cald is a rather drawn out process, but at the end of this period, the resulting liquid is either immediately applied to cloth or packaged and traded as a dye.

Location – The Sou’cald moss is a wide-ranging plant and is willing to grow in any location that is cool, moist and shielded from the sun.  Thus, in nature it tends to grow in the shadows of large rocks and trees.  The moss is also cultivated by the villagers of the village of Holt.  To ensure they a large enough supply to produce enough dye for sale, the villagers have erected rows of overturned logs along the southwestern outskirts of the settlement.  Artificial shade is created by draping large sheets of cloth over the entire arrangement, creating a perfect environment for Sou’cald to take root.

Sapphire Anemone ¬– If the fluid in the base of the Sapphire Anemone is squeezed out it makes a very high quality ink. This is often quite difficult to accomplish, as the plant latches firmly onto the oceanic rock in which it makes its home.  Unless the silver of the rock containing the plant can be removed, a knife is required to sever the Anemone, leading to a loss of most of its fluids.  If it can be obtained, the blue ink of the Sapphire Anemone has proven to be thick, smooth and extremely long lasting.  It takes well to a wide variety of surfaces, such as paper, rock, glass, and even skin, and thus is extremely effective in decoration, documentation and tattooing.

Location – the Sapphire Anemone is native to the reefs of the Scattersand Shoals and can therefore be found in large quantities around two of its biggest reefs of the coasts of Aidan and Sylffia.  A few have managed to extend beyond the Shoals and reach the shores of Thalambath.

Waterleaf – This freshwater plant is best known for the wide array of green dyes it is the key ingredient in producing.  Much like a human changes size as it matures, the leaves of the Waterleaf change their hue over the course of a season.  As a result, depending upon the color he desires for his garment, the dyer will harvest only the leaves of one particular phase at a time.  Though relatively long lasting, the color of garments dyed with waterleaf eventually fades if overwashed and exposed to the sun.  As time progresses, these processes will turn deeper green shades lighter and lighter until eventually they turn an unappealing herne green color.

Location – The Waterleaf is a freshwater aquatic plant and thus can only be found growing in shallow rivers, creeks and rivulets.  Though it appears to have originated in Southern Sarvonia, it can also be found in temperate climate regions of Nybelmar and Northern Sarvonia.  It should also be noted that the Waterleaf is usually only found in areas with few permanent human settlements as it is believed that the wastes created by these societies taint the water supply and poison the plant to death.

Animals:

Blackbeetle paint – Made by the Bubbler clan of the Llaoihir, this bright blue dye is made from the carcass of the Blackbeetle.  The concoction is quite thick in nature, making it useful to the Vale Brownies as both a paint for beads and a dye for clothing.  To create this particular dye, the Brownies remove and crush the chitin found between the beetle’s wing casing and wing before soaking it in water.

Location – The recipe for Blackbeetle paint is a closely guarded secret of the Vale Brownies.  As such, this dye can only be acquired from the tribe’s Bubbler Clan.

Charalara Octopus – The black ink harvested from the Charalara Octopus by the Tarshiinite men is considered to be of the highest quality in all of Nybelmar because it neither smudges nor fades with time.  As the creature is relatively rare, this ink is quite costly and can only be afforded by extremely wealth officials, such as abbots and council scribes.

Location – The Charalara Octopus can only be found in Nybelmar's Western Bay.  Like most other Octopi, the Charalara tends to take to regions with rockier bottoms or reefs where it can make its den.

Copper Lopstere – The Copper Lopstere’s dark-green sludge-like waste is known for its ability to dye most substances a vivid blue-green color.  Though it could be quite efficient to sell, as it requires no preparation to be transformed into a dye, most individuals don’t take to the idea of having fish feces rubbed into their garments.  As such, this for of dye has remained quite unpopular and is only used by the poorest of people.

Location – This crustacean lives exclusively in salt water and thus can only be found along Caelereth’s coasts.  Besides this one requirement, the Lopstere seems to be able to thrive nearly anywhere, provided there are crannies for it to make its home and the waters are warm enough.  In the winters, this beast is known to retreat to the depths of the ocean so it must be trapped during the warm summer months.

Dhururian snail – This snail is the primary ingredient in a Remusian blue dye known as Dhura, which is a favorite among the women of the capital.  Since such a large number of snails are required to make even a single cloak, clothes dyed with Dhura are quite pricey and thus are a sign of wealth.  The creation of Dhura is accompanied by an awful scent, leading its producers to be looked down upon and forced to the outskirts of society.

Location – The Dhururian Snail can be found predominantly in the Bay of Calinth in Northern Sarvonia and occasionally in the Ice Sea.  The species seems to require the freezing waters of these two regions to survive, so attempts by dyers to domesticate the rare creature and raise it in farms have all failed.

Filachara Mollusk – This Nybelmarian Mollusk is the primary ingredient used to make the high quality black ink that bears its name.  Produced primarily by the Tarshiinite men, the sale of the relatively cheap ink produced by this creature to professionals and ironworkers is the cornerstone of the region’s thriving industry.  Among the wealthy, Filachara ink has begun to be replaced by that of the Charalara Octopus, for it is rarer, unable to smudge, and serves as a sign of status.

Location – The Filachara can only be found along the coasts of the Western Bay of Nybelmar which is in the realm of the Tarshiinites.  Though it cannot be proved, it is believed that the crustaceans’ territory is so limited because they are dependent upon the Bay’s coral reefs for sustenance.

Kraken – if is able to be killed in large enough quantities, the fearsome Kraken is used to harvest a black ink used for writing.  As each individual beast only contains a small amount of ink at any given time, it is often considered not worth the hassle of gathering.  For those who live near the coasts, however, the beast serves as the primary source of black ink used for writing.

Location – The Kraken are a very versatile ocean dwelling creature and, as such, can be found throughout the seas of Caelereth.  It seems to have know preference for temperature or depth though it tends to prefer seaweed or coral infested waters and rocky areas.

Silkyback Newt – this small amphibian excretes a bright yellow fluid when squeezed with enough force that is capable of dyeing most materials.  Referred to as “fool’s injera” or “foslin,” this dye is in high demand among artists and dyers in Sarvonia, particularly in Carmalad, and across Nybelmar as a cheap alternative in the creation yellow or gold fabrics.  The semi-transparent nature of Sillyback Newt excrement has also made invaluable to scholars, who use it to mark important passages of text.

Location – Though this creature is native to the Crimson Isles of eastern Nybelmar, the newt has slowly expanded its territory and how can be found all over Caelereth.  Though it has also expanded its territory traditionally, much of the newt’s spreading out can be attributed to trade.  In recent years, Sarvonian traders have begun importing large quantities of these creatures for sale around the continent, and, as such, they can now be found kept in captivity in large numbers in many cities and towns.

Minerals and Substances

Neprisian Clay/Water Mixture – This peculiar red hair dye was made famous by the Neprisian merchant, Ibbon Alnasray.  Though it still remains rather unpopular, this concoction is occasionally used by men and women of the lower classes looking for a radical change in their physical appearance, though it is unlikely that they would ever admit it.  According to Alnasray, a hair dye made from this particular concoction also does wonders for the scalp, making it much healthier and getting rid of pesky itches and dandruff.

Location – As the key ingredient of this dye is the red clay of Nepris, it can only be found on Southern Sarvonia’s eastern coast where such soil is abundant.  This hair product’s lack of appeal has restricted its expansion, limiting it only to the lands east of the Mithral mountains.

Charcoal – When rubbed repeatedly into an open wound, charcoal can serve as the ink for a black tattoo.  The tattoos produced, however, are usually not of a particularly high quality as fragments of this substance tend to rub off unevenly in the wound, giving it a rough and amateur appearance.  The small bits of charcoal also have proven much more likely to cause infection when applied to the skin than other dies used for tattooing.

Location – As it is produced from burning wood of any kind, charcoal is a readily available substance throughout Caelereth.  Its use as a dye, however, tends to be limited to poor, rural areas with little access to or means of obtaining traditional inks.  The most notable exception to this general principle is the women of the Remusian tribe, who occasionally use it to tattoo their faces.

Water/Pigmented Rock Mixture – This concoction is used by the Orcristh tribe as an ink for writing.  For some unknown reason, the ink only seems to produce long lasting color on hides, while having no noticeable effects on paper, skin, or cloth.  Depending upon the rock used, a wide variety of pigments can be made.

Location – As it is an Orcisth creation, this dye can only be found in their settlements.  Since its uses are quite limited it has not spread beyond the boundaries of the Kingdom of Orcal in Nybelmar.

Wine – While most races of Caelereth purchase wine for consumption, the Mullogs of the Silvermarshes us the substance exclusively as a dye.  Being especially susceptible to the effects of alcohol, the Mullogs have instead put the beverage to use in providing a deep burgundy color to the hides and plant-things they use as clothing.

Location – though Wine can be found throughout Caelereth, its use as a fabric dye is a practice limited exclusively to Mullogs.  As such, garments dyed with wine can only be found in the Silvermarshes.

Xazure – One of the more common mineral dyes, Xazure is used to create a range of blue and purple colors when mixed with sea water and mordant.  Though it has been used for quite some time, vibrant blue garments colored by this dye were first made popular by the famous Ximaxian Archmage, Xarl Bluestride.

Location – Though Xazure can only be found in thermal streams, clothes dyed with it have become quite popular throughout Caelereth.  As the mineral is very poisonous, however, its processing is limited to a few select locations, such as the town of Holt near Bitter Creek, a thermal stream in Manthria.

I see three for the Remusians.  Though, charcoal would be more universal than just them, I think,  It was/is pretty universal here on Terra.

Mhmm.  You were actually one of the people I needed to talk to.  I have your Hrugchuk grass marked in red because I couldn't find many details on it.  Is there anything specific you'd like me to include/do you want to do the elaboration yourself or is it alright if I just invent something?

One point Drasil, and maybe you intend to follow through on this, I know I had to cut down once I started.
Do not just cut and paste the relevant sections in from the entries you're referencing. Take a look at the poison overview for an example. Generally.

First and foremost, I don't appreciate the statement that I copied and pasted everything and am claiming credit for it.  Every sentence in this entry is original, along with many of the ideas and procedures.  Your comment inaccurately accuses of plagerizing and I won't let that fly.

As for shortening it, that can be done with ease.  I'd rather have to cut back then add more so I can look into that when I finish.

Drasil, relax!  No insinuations were actually made, either of taking credit or of plagiarism.   Your statement of originality can easily be verified, so no need to be so defensive.

And Valan, please don't throw around blanket statements quite so tactlessly.  In overviews it is perfectly permissible to either redact/rephrase/precis the information required, or to choose the most essential/informative details from the original entry and place it in its proper context.  Overviews are by their very nature not 'original' work, but are difficult enough to do without having to rewrite every last sentence.

OK?  Everyone have a cup of Baian'cha and then let's all get back to work!

Hugs,
Judith

What exactly do you want to have here, Drasil, location, what else?

Most of them are the color it makes, what its used for, who most often uses it and, if available, how its made.

The Invilberry tree and the Me'hendi bush are two dyes mentioned in your Shendar entry that never got an entry of their own so I wanted you to look over what I came up with to make sure you were okay with it.

I see, I thought you wanted to have more  additions.

Me'hendi is fine as it is, the Invilberry I can't even remember, what I have in mind with it. But if territory is enough, then let's say, the grow at the rim of the Open Woodlands, not so well towards the desert, more ot the mountains. Or do you want to have more?

What would you like for Purple Kail?  Just a couple of lines, like this?

"Purple Kail is a useful, though fugitive dye. One well-known product which includes Purple Kail is the "Fairhaven Apothecaries' Rose and Raisin Balm for Lips", a sweetly-scented and sweetly-pink concoction sold in tiny ceramic pots..."

(I recall that Alysse designed an Apothecary / Cosmetic shop which I would like to credit here, but I a) can't think of the name off the top of my head and b) am on my work computer writing this between classes!  Feel free to substitute that in if you find the reference.....)

Doing a little research, Drasil, but I will get you your submissions.

Do we have alum?  Seems like the most popular mordant (had to look that up, thanks to Judith's description :P)  Who knew vegetable dyes were so involved and interesting.  Hmm... good thing you took this Drasil, or I'd be tempted to create the "definitive dye" entry, heh. buck

Finally finished this overview.  I cut down the length as Valan has requested to a hopefully more acceptable size.

I've decided to make the industry entry separate from the overview so that this doesn't end up being a small book but that probably won't be ready for some time.
