The tribes sound a little like castes to me. Perhaps they could be turned into some sort of caste system?
Quote
I think that gives me a solid ground to work with, but it's brought to light one of the problems with the tribes at this point. Namely that neither the R'unorian orcs or the fourth human tribe has a formal name.
How much information do we currently have on the R'unorian language or languages? That might help a little with names.

As far as languages, nothing formal. I've been using vastly corrupted Styrash for some names, though in theory it'd be corrupted nybelmarian styrash. Concepts or objects they're likely to have picked up from the Kayr have names like that. There's a half-baked nomenclature that's sitting on my hard drive and based on Xenos' names on the site they like using apostrophes instead of vowels.
The tribes have been very deliberately designed as a caste system, just based on what came out of the bits and pieces already on site. In this case the castes are maintained both through the culture of R'unor and through the obvious physical differences. It's essentially the result of generational training. Soldiers raising their children to be soldiers for a few centuries will probably do that. Granted, the idea of soldier in this case is a little wider than "guy with a sword that kills people".

Well, the names on the site do look like they have too many apostrophes. I guess having apostrophes represent a certain vowel sound is one way to deal with that if you don't want to simply get rid of them.
If the tribes are meant to be castes anyway, why not go ahead and call them that, instead of tribes?

Like Eddings' and his whole Angaraks classes --> races thing ... no matter how long it was, the Malloreans still considered themselves Aristocrats; the Murgos, Warriors; the Nadraks, merchants; and the Thulls, workers. And of course the Grolims were the priests. There were various bits and pieces of dialogue in the books of the Mallorean (and also the Rivan Codex; perhaps Belgarath the Sorcerer as well) that suggested something along the lines of what you are saying above, Valan.

@Dek: There is a little inspiration from there, and some is drawn from Herbert's Dune universe, and Stephenson's Diamond Age
@Mina: Because the Blaar'kr have blue skin, the R'mart are quasi-elves and the fourth tribe is a hodge-podge mixture of at least six different tribes. It's likely that the P'thia are the only tribe that actually echoes the It's not a case that they all look the same and divide themselves along the lines of castes, more that the castes formed along the lines of tribes and there's now no functional difference between caste and tribe. In the long run I think it's simpler to stick with the established nomenclature.

Ah, that makes sense.
The Blaar'kr have blue skin?
Well, I guess that could be possible with the right orcish ancestry.

Sorry, bluish
hair
, I occasionally get some of these mixed up. The orcish ancestry involved is probably Orcristh based on discussions.

The name "Flameseer" was popular in past R'unorian development, I see.

In her thread involving pictures of male orcs cleaning dishes and cleaning the floor in the men's toilet, Judith proposed the following:
Quote
Or is there indeed a matriarchal orcen society hidden away somewhere that we haven't yet compendiumized?
Now, I suspect that was suggested tongue in cheek ... but is it possible that the R'Unorian Orcs could be that matriarchal orcen society? I don't know what development has already been done on these orcs previously, but given that (I'm sure I'm right in what I'm about to say) R'unorian society is matriarchal, that might make sense that the orcen females see the way that the human females take control and attempt to do the same ... possibly with the help of a couple of 'renegade' members of one/more of the human tribes on the islands.
Just a thought, take it or leave it, and as I said, I don't know what development has already been done with those orcs there.
