I thought I'd like to make a composition similar to an almanack with an accompanying article (meaning I intend to collect sayings and describe people and practices), on what it is to be a seaperson in Caelereth. It's a pretty interesting subject, and as of right now you have to research it by digging everywhere "in diver's manners".

I'd like to do this project or be a part of it, because I've been reading the entries here for a couple of years and have a grasp on the races, tribes, and various places. However, this would involve discussing a lot of sailors and port communities from the Anpagans down to the Kasumarii. I don't mean for it to be exhaustive, but port and sea life has a distinctive flavor of culture, trade, and grit that can stand to be communicated for the most part in one place.

I'll be digging and posting links here to relevant entries, and I'd appreciate it if anyone else posted links to relevant entries here as well. That is, if I've got the initial yay instead of nay to explore this option.

Well, nothing wrong with that I'd say basically, Alexandre, the question for me mainly is: What kind of entry/entries will be the result?

As you had some troubles with your first entry, which eventually didn't make it on site for whatever reason, I'd suggest to go into a certain direction for a start, pick something specific of this larger area you're interested in, something that is not that difficult to manage and can result in a first entry. Even if it's just something minor. Then a start is made and you can build on that, make an entry that connects to it. But keeping things too general and not too clearly defined could lead to problems in order to get anything up. Thus: get your feet wet (literally in this case!), and then dive in fully ;) - What do you think?

Right. I don't see how I'd go about doing that, but I'll see more clearly when some more research has been done.

Once again, if any of you guys have reading suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Hi Alexandre,

I like your idea in general. I saw that you posted a number of links in Cersei's "Just a few questions" thread on the RPG board recently, so it's not as if you're a complete newbie to Santharian nautical and port lore!

Like Artimidor, I feel it might be wise to start with a small and manageable entry that covers one aspect of what you're interested in here.  Say, you could describe one port town, or even just the port area of a major city, or make an entry on sailor's superstitions, or ... If your interest stands the test of time and continued research, then there's of course the possibility of creating further entries later on.

You asked for hints on relevant things to read. So here goes:

One old idea that never got made into an entry was put forward by Yurie (the moderator of Jovloff's Gold, who has not been an active developer recently) long ago: Rhyming Slang. If this was something you might be interested in, you could try and ask Yurie via the RPG board?

Judith, Mira and I also once had a very  rudimentary discussion about Sea Navigation and Ship Speed Measurement. There's an entry in that, I think, but I don't have time or inclination to write it myself at present. So this could be something to explore?

Another idea might be to go through the many entries on sea creatures, and particularly their 'Myth/Lore' sections, and see whether that provides some inspiration. In my own entry on the Ugling Sea Slug, for example, I've tried to describe how sailors deal with this creature, and how it has influenced sailor's lore and sayings.

Then there's the merfolk entry, of course, which ought to be relevant for anyone who wants to understand how landlubber Santharians might see the sea and its inhabitants.

That's it for now - I'll post more links if further associations come to mind.

Navigation and ship speeds would be an area of particular interest to me, because I've heard and asked questions about it ever since I started going to this site.

Alexandre, I seem to recall some 'discussion' in the Eight Winds Bay (8WB) Development thread about Navigation and ship speeds in it. That might be of interest for you as well.

Also, in the same thread, I kind of hinted at Navigational aids that the Blessed Sea Elves (BSE) used to guide their ships and that they provided to visitors to 8WB to help them as well. Not sure if you have any ideas of what that might be ... but I don't. Who knows it could be a potential entry for you?

I'll work on that, then. My ability to write entries here will be cut short by spring, because I'm going back to school, so I'll have to stop working here before then.
