Saw a post on Facebook and wanted to share it with you all: 135 Shots That Will Restore Your Faith in Cimema

So if you call yourself a movie buff, let's see how many you actually recognize... You might want to rethink, though ;) Unless you're satisfied with movies like "Lord of the Rings" and "Dark Knight" and stuff. Otherwise this is an interesting challenge I'd say...

I'm a movie buff only where it concerns fantasy, sci-fi and Johnny Depp.

Otherwise, I'm clueless.

I did see the last Batman and liked it!  ;)

Thanks, Arti - that was fascinating. I rather liked the music, too!

I only recognized a handful and a half of films. Tarkovski's Solaris, Space Odyssee, and Koyaanisqatsi among them. No Jim Jarmusch, as far as I could see? And was there any Hitchcock at all? I wasn't sure.

PS: I also recognized Terry Gilliam's Brazil, Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire, and maybe The Last Emperor, although I wasn't sure about that one. Any others someone recognized?

Hitchcock clearly is there with Vertigo (actually it's the iconic bridge scene), and so is Jim Jarmusch actually - I see the Down By Law swamps... :)

I recognized several more than the ones you mentioned I'd say, Shabakuk, but then again I am a bit of a a movie buff. There are several Malick films, Koyaanisqatsi's successor Baraka (multiple times), Murnau's Sunrise, In the Mood for Love, Amelie, Night of the Hunter (also twice), Ugetsu, some Kurosawa, but only one Fellini from what I can see - but I could go on ;)

@Azhira: Bonus question for a Johnny Depp expert... See if you can name the black and white western in which Johny Depp played the protagonist - of course without looking it up... ;)

Arti;  I thought Lance Henriksen was particularly good in that film.  It is such a bizarre movie.

No movie buff here. I recognised only 2001 (2 times) and Hero for sure, not even Amelie, or Solaris. Others I thought I should know...

Btw, I love Hero...

Was actually surprised how many I did recognize.  Nowhere near all of them, but quite a few.  Spoilers in Black:  Legends of the Fall not mentioned yet, or Apocalypse Now.  LoA, Chinatown, Black Stallion, Barbarella (I think), What Dreams May Come, Thin Red Line (I think), There Will Be Blood (I think), Last Emperor.  Children of Men, Perfume: Story of a Murderer (one of my faves), Raging Bull, In Cold Blood  Some I recognize but can't put names to.  Some I recognized that you have already mentioned like Hero, 2001

There's a link posted below the movie where all the included films are mentioned, see here if you're interested. Note that there are only 86 films, but 135 shots, and if repeated they aren't mentioned again. Makes identification a bit more difficult. Also: The list mentions the cinematographers in brackets, not the directors, so if you know a film only be director and search for it there you won't find it... - Absolutely love the music as well BTW, which is from Moon (you hear only half of it in the clip), also the movie itself isn't bad at all for a low budget attempt, but of course not comparable to true masterpieces.

For those interested in expanding their cinematic horizons I can also recommend the following IMDB list put together by a trusted source: 100 Movies, 100 Reviews (actually there are only about 80 reviews available as of yet, but the rest should follow). Links to trailers are included as well. (@Azhira: And there's also your Johnny Depp's Western...)

Oh, I don't recognise even the few I should know.. maybe I should start watching all these? ;)

Art, if you like that music, you might like Einaudi also - you might know him well already though.

As the site is teeming with life and everything runs so smoothly I finally took the time to conclude my non-Santharian project to help movie enthusiasts to get a proper perspective on this art form, so the complete results are now available in the following IMDB list: Artimidor's 100 Movie Masterpieces The list features 100 recommendations for everyone seriously interested in film-making, complete with 100 reviews and 100 trailers.

(Disclaimer: There's no "Dark Knight", "Lord of the Rings" etc. to be found in this list. There are hundreds of other lists which fulfill that purpose where you have all the popular Hollywood CGI stuff. The list includes only the essentials from my point of view that really have to say something. The reasons why these titles are there, are given in the detailed reviews.)

Interesting list, Arti - I agree with many of the choices (insofar as I know them).

One director whom I missed, i.e. who in my opinion would deserve to be on the list is Michael Haneke (Time of the Wolves, The White Ribbon, Hidden, ...). You don't like his films?

Hope you find the one or the other interesting one in the list for you to check out as well, Shabakuk. cool

I have to admit that I only recently got to watch my first Haneke film, and this even though he's Austrian. But Austrians don't have a very good reputation in terms of film-making in general. Yet I was very surprised when I saw "The White Ribbon" - it's very good and intelligently written, very different and risky in terms of the main story and also in the way it is put together e.g. to completely eliminate all kinds of music to give it a distinctive documentary look and feel etc. Loved when a journalist asked Haneke about "The White Ribbon": "So who was behind all this? This wasn't that well explained it the movie, was it? Can you tell us exactly? I'm confused!" He said: "No, I can't tell you. If I could there would be no point in making the movie..." :)

"The White Ribbon" is still not as great as others on my list in my point of view, but nevertheless quite an important one. Getting to know the man behind the movie in the extras really made me want to see more of his films, especially as he always tries to tackle controversial issues. So yup, I'll have an eye on him for sure!

Files have been replaced again, but the question remains how long this will last. SMF support will have a look at the security problem.

It has been hacked. The third time in 3 days. I need to replace the changed files again (won't happen before evening) - and then see what the SMF support recommends as a strategy.

Arti, could you maybe take a look at the RPG board? I got a message from my anti-virus program and now I can't access the column on the right with the list of current threads and the shoutbox. Thankies :)
