I've been wondering what the Anaios Gap is for some time, especially since a significant part of it is in Xaramon.  It's main importance so far is that a fork of the Thaehelvil river flows into it, and that several hundred elves fell to their deaths there.

I found an old forum post from 2001 which mentioned that it was formed by an earthquake, but looking around on the internet, it seems that earthquake fissures are too small to really be shown on a map, and too narrow and shallow to really be dangerous.  We could maybe invoke magic and say that a Chosen or something created it with a giant earthquake, but I don't really like involving magic unless it's necessary.  Besides which, the earthquake needed would probably be many times stronger than anything on Earth and possibly too destructive.

On the other hand, the Thaehelvil entry says this:
Quote
The river may as well be in part responsible for the formation of the Anaios Gap. This is one of the most senic spots on the river: Here the Thaehelvil divides in two, one part of the river plunging down the gap to form a huge waterfall, before converging with the rest of the river.
That makes the Anaios Gap sound more like some sort of canyon, which its appearance on the map does seem to resemble somewhat.  It does seem too wide, but that could probably be excused as being artistic license, especially since rivers and cities also appear far larger than they should be on the maps.

However, this also brings up another problem: where does all the the water that flow into it go?  The segment I qouted above seems to suggest that it flows out somewhere and rejoins the Thaehelvil river.  The Santharian Rivers Map doesn't show any water exiting the Anaios Gap though.

I'd say it was a side effect of the War of the Chosen. Like many other geographical things as well. Whole continents split then, so the Anois Gap can very well stem from there. At least people think so. But do we really need to know? The idea was also that it leads down into eternal nothingness, or at least it looks that way. Again, an intentional concept, so its unclear where the river leads to. That was the basic idea.

I guess I could work with that.  I mostly just wanted to know about what it was supposed to be so that I could take that into account for Xaramon, as well as get better idea of what it looks like and how it fits into its surroundings.

So the Thaehelvil entry is incorrect about the water rejoining the river?

Edit: Thinking about this a little more, since the Anaios Gap looks bottomless, it seems likely that most Santharians would at least suspect if not believe that it goes all the way to the Netherworld.  If this is caused by, or believed to be caused by the War of the Chosen, it might help to explain the Kyranians' distrust of magic, assuming Dek is alright with it.  It could also get blamed for all sorts of things thought to be supernatural in origin.  Maybe it could be connected with the Silver Hand group mentioned in the Shivering Woods entry, which would help to fit them into the province's history.  No real plans yet, just brainstorming.

Yeah, the converging doesn't really fit here, it's also not drawn that way on the map. So this will have to be changed. And there's of course a lot where one can connect it with myth/lore as you suggested, so yup, go ahead and continue thinking in this direction, Mina, guess there are lots of interesting options!  cool

It is possible it was named that after that guy from Kyranian history who set up the city of Naios in opposition to the Kyranian capital city of Caelum, perhaps. Apart from that, I've got no idea.

Well yeah, Naios is the town, and the name A-naios definitely derived from that. It was meant to stand for "At Naios", with the "A" probably deriving from a tribal dialect/language.

Unfortunately, I see two problems with this idea.  Firstly, the town is located near the Wind Bay coast, which is about 100km from the Anaios Gap.  That seems a little too far away for the name to have been derived that way.  The other problem is that the town was founded sometime between 933-806 b.S., about 8000 years after the War of the Chosen was supposed to have ended.  If the Gap is believed to be connected to the war, it would have to be much older than the town.

The second problem can be solved if we have "Anaios Gap" be a more recent name, so that it was known by some other name in the past.  As for the first problem, perhaps instead of one getting its name from the other, they could have both got their names from some other source, such as Naios himself, like Dek suggested.  I don't know what he might have done to get the Gap renamed after him, but it doesn't look like there's been much written about him, so there's probably room to make something up.

When I look at the map I see Naios close to the Gap - the Gap stretches quite a bit from north to south, away from the coast, so I don't see a 100 km distance... Naios could have founded this town (or made a settlement into a larger town), (re-)named it after him, the Gap then was named Anaios Gap (Next to Naios), don't really see much of a problem here.

The Kyranian history table suggests that was what happened between Naios (the Kyranian) and Naios (the town) if my memory serves properly, Art.

Well, the history tables mention that Naios is located near the Wind Bay:
Quote
Finding a hill near Windbay, just like the one that Caldar has built his castle on, he interprets these sights as a sign and he builds a fortified town he names "Naios," the "Fortress of the Whispering Voices".

The distance between the coast and the Anaios Gap is more or less 100km, at least when I measure it on the Manthria-scale map.  So I guess it depends on how you interpret "near".  I assumed it meant that it was at most a kilometer or two from the coast.

Files have been replaced again, but the question remains how long this will last. SMF support will have a look at the security problem.

It has been hacked. The third time in 3 days. I need to replace the changed files again (won't happen before evening) - and then see what the SMF support recommends as a strategy.
