Worry not! I'm not going to ask you to babysit those twelve children...

I'm not quite going to tell you why I need it, but if you would indulge me nonetheless, I would be grateful for your help with the following:

If you were to criticise Winter's behaviour so far (especially with the children), what would you say? What comes to mind? What strikes you as odd? Unconscionable? Improper? Un-monk-like? (Feel free to reproach him for other cardinal sins too, should you so wish.)

Ladies and gentlemen of Santharia, this is your chance to grab Winter... and box him by the ears!

Well, I  would not criticize him for that, but his fellow monks might:

Winter is not a good leader; he has not imposed his authority on the children. He is more like a big brother whom the children obey half-grudgingly and half-jokingly, and only because they know that ultimately he is backed by the authority of the monastery and Master Kao. It seems to me that the children do not believe Winter to be particularly wise (it's Kao who is wise), nor do they think that he is an example they would like to follow (Travis seems to be much more admired).

To wit, while Winter hasn't maybe done much wrong since he found Ker sitting in a tree, the fact that Ker did climb a tree during practice seems to indicate that the child doesn't fully accept Winter as a teacher. This exposes Winter's weakness. Maybe he is too much focused on himself and his own troubles with the children, rather than on the teaching job at hand? He gets drawn into arguments that have no place in the practice. Therefore the practice lacks the focus that it is designed to teach.

Any good?

For myself, I think Winter is a great teacher, though. I had my fill of self-important authoritarians in my school days. :)

Thanks, Shab.

I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks. The more the merrier!

PS: Subtle hint: The speed and quantity of replies here might have a direct correlation to the speed with which Ch 11 comes. ;)

Don't know why but this story reminds me of a TV show I used to watch; Kung Fu, with David Carradine.  "Ah, yes, Grasshopper".  Loved that show. heart

But, I would share Shabby's theme.  Winter doesn't seem to have control of his students.  These don't seem to be initiate students, as they all seem to quote Master Kao rather well, so I would assume a teacher would/should have better control over them.

My only critique, though I assume you are having these scenes to build character development.

I thought long over Shaba's post and now that Altario confirms it, I feel I need to give some input too, though I can't formulate it well and need to do some more research .

What you two think makes him a 'bad' or not respected teacher might be how 'people ' thought a good education had to look like some twenty years ago (and of course today as well) -  the pupils obeying on the word, immediately. But these monks might have another concept. To make my view clearer I need to do some more research to find out what exactly I want to say ;)  and what the new terminology is which shows a new approach - and I don't think at the anti-authority stuff.
