Slowly working my way up to writing the entries on Moulding, Persuasion and Being, the three schools of Krean magic. But first: Basic concepts! :)

Menu placement: Sub-entry of Krean Arcane Arts; next to "Ardelor Hypothesis" and "Olesian Obstruction".

The Ancient Krean believed that everything was “thought, given form”, which is interpreted to mean that everything is energy, and that energy is consciousness. The Living Word is a concept used in Krean Arcane Arts to indicate “thought (willpower), brought to life in words” – that is: the words in which the will of the mage lives. But the Living Word need not be a “word” – it can be a gesture, a pattern, a rune, a visualisation, a movement, an object, a scent… anything which can house the mage’s willpower as he shapes his spell. At the heart of it, the Living Word is the vessel that carries the magical power and gives it shape. In the Krean system, the Living Word is used to (a) store; (b) embody; or (c) shape the mage’s will.

Picture caption: The Living Word – these are not just pretty birds fashioned from light, but each a vessel for a powerful spell waiting to be released. Archmage Akiris Akai (3211-3114 BS) is accepted as one of the three founders of Krean Magic. She invented [Wordsmithing] – the art of crafting animate vessels for the Living Word, which allowed Krean magic to move beyond incantations and enchantments. Picture drawn by Sheil.

In the Krean system, the Living Word serves three purposes: to (a) shape; (b) embody; or (c) store the mage’s will.

(a) Shaping the mage’s will:
Magic is extremely difficult to handle and most mages require some sort of anchor to make their casting possible. Just as the motion of the hands guides the clay and bridges intent to form, so does the incantation help mould and lend shape to the mage’s will. Here, thought (willpower) is brought to life through the Living Word. It is the conduit that births the magic from the willpower of the mage.

Thus, the Living Word can be seen as the tool used to accomplish the task of magic. Even the most skilled sculptor or smith still needs a chisel, or a hammer, to make the stone/metal do what he wants... As a mage advances in skill, he may dispense with the more tangible tools of reagents and magical focusses, and move towards subtler anchors such as incantations, symbols or dance. But, however subtle it may be, the anchor is still there – only an Existential Mage (see: Krean Arcane Pyramid) can work magic directly, without any tools to mediate consciousness and reality.

It may seem at first sight that Ximathurgy does not require the Living Word to shape magic: in the Ximaxian system magic is cast primarily through an application of will, and reagents and incantations are used only to aid the mage’s concentration; but, according to the Krean, this is not so. Moving ounia and the links between them is a metaphor – a tool to manipulate that which the mage cannot directly sense. There, as in many Krean arcane arts, the conceptual framework itself has become the Living Word.

(b) Embodying the mage’s will:

"Yes, what does that mean?"

Hello all! It's been a minute since I poked my nose in here. Can't remember if I ever did anything useful.

Ah, too bad that internet is so restricted in China, Ferra. Can't be much fun surfing the web that way if Big Brother's watching you... Hope you enjoy your stay nevertheless!

Hi, dear Arti and other developers!

This year I am in China and cannot use any Google services including YouTube. For this reason I stopped uploading new Nepris videos. I can also not read any comments there.

It just crossed my mind that this information might be useful to you.
