Just out of spite, I would like to write a story one day, which begins with the line:

"It was a dark and stormy night, but that's all right because Stanley is blind and he doesn't mind anyway; after all, what is a little rain to a mermaid?"

or

"Unphvil Longbeard gazed at the endless expanse of the ocean stretching as far as the eye could see in every direction, and knew that he had been banished to that special place in hell, which Trum-Baroll the Forge Lord reserves for murderers, child molesters, and dwarves who have lost the count; now, because of him, the whole of Clan Mitharim was in Debt."

"Is he allowed to do that?"
"I think that comes under the rule of Quia Ego Sic Dico."
"Yes, what does that mean?"
"'Because I say so', I think."
"That doesn't sound like much of a rule!"
"Actually, it's the only one he needs." (Making Money by Terry Pratchett)

The first option sounds the most intriguing for sure. It is to the point and really makes one wonder how it will go on, because it has a lot of really fascinating stuff mentioned there already. :)

As for the second one, some first sentence theory: Regardless of the story behind it this one's probably a bit too lengthy for a first line. There's a whole story ahead to get into more details, so it doesn't necessarily need to be packed in one sentence. Might be a bit intimidating to a reader. I think the main purpose of a first sentence should be to be an incentive for the reader to read on. I remember for example Raymond E. Feist who by principle always has super short sentences starting off 600+ pages books, and methinks he is on to something there :) So yeah, that's that. But option B sounds content-wise also like an interesting story. I vote for the shorter one to be written first, as I like to see tales getting finished more sooner than later... :P

Clearly this was just another brief Stan Lee cameo....
