I'm working on compiling a price list....

Unfortunately, it looks as though it will be a monstrous compilation, covering items from the Herbarium, Bestiary, Tribe entries, and so on... any physical thing which can be bought, sold, traded, or bartered in all of Sorr'ae're'cael'erth'aria should eventually wind up on this list, so there are a lot of items to enter, let alone to cross-check and create values and worths for!

If anyone else feels like doing some research to help out here, any references to trades and estimated values would be appreciated.

For example, let's take the pricy substance made from totit by the dedicated Soryint, the fabulous Yuatu'way silk.   "one cartload of Yuatu’way fiber will be traded for two Azhorhrian horses…" according to Aenea's Soryint entry.   And since the Azhorhrian entry says that even a single horse is worth about 10 bags of gold (sheesh, don't overdo it here, people! Let's read pouch for bag, ok?) that would make it about a mithrene's worth (10 goldbards to the pouch sounds about right...)

So assume fifteen to twenty large bags or bales of rolled cloth to the cartload - let's say twenty to make the math easier.. that would be 200 goldbards for the cart,  thus 10 goldbards to the roll... whew, this stuff IS expensive!   How many peds to a roll?   Well, even for a light fiber there's a limit, or the roll gets too bulky/heavy.  But I don't know how many meters of cotton fits on the average cloth roll in my fabric store, so I'm going to go check that out.  Once I have that number, I can do the math to figure out my base cost for a single ped of Yuatu'way silk.

Now, do all that math in your head for every single entry on your shopping list.... :rolleyes :( 8o :x :o

This WILL be very very useful in the end, though...

Regards from the counting-frantically-on-fingers bard,
Judith

Etto.. I'd like to help if I can, but it would also be nice to sort of understand the conversions for currency from real-world to Santharian world. I mean, About how many American dollars/Canadian dollars/Franks/Pounds/Euros/Santharian currency would a jug of milk cost? A gold ring? A carrot/caroot? A tomato/lythbel?

Some of the prices may be different depending on region, but as an average..? If we had some sort of idea how much one san or hak or copperbard is worth, we may be able to help out.

Erm.. does inflation exist in Santharia? o.o;

Heh, okay, make it ten medium-sized little pouches of gold for one Azhorhrian horse then! Guess it would be a little hard to lug hefty bags of gold around in a desert :b  Be nice to be filthy rich though....

For a rough price list I propose to take games as reference in order to get relations between wares right in medieval time. Cause these games had the same problems (e.g. how much costs a lantern in relation to a loaf of bread). Morrowind e.g. has a lot of various items (also completely "unimportant" ones for regular role playing), and would be good as reference, which we then only would need to convert to Santharian currency.

I think something that would be at least of mild importance would be the average cost for a nights stay at decent quality inn.

Just to give you guys an idea of the work I've done so far - here's the list to date in rough-and-dirty form - note that no prices are included so far, but the horses are some of the costliest items, running from ten to a hundred gold pieces, while a loaf of bread will run you from 5 to 10 san on the cheap end of things.

And the prices should all be averages, more significant for their relationships to each other than a direct 'conversion' from modern prices - or even medieval prices, since our economy is assisted by techology and magic which the terran middle ages did not have ;)

Lots more items are coming - most of the foodstuffs aren't on yet, and common household utensils, pieces of clothing, traveller's goods, and so on all need to be defined.  Have a look and add what you like!

After learning that a game engine is indeed available, and looking at my list again, I'm inclined to think that subdividing the price list by category might be more useful...

For example: Foodstuffs / Travel Gear / Weapons & Utensils / Livestock / Herbs and Medicines / Enchanted Items

In that case we could concentrate on filling out just the categories that were most necessary to the game, such as Travel Gear, and let categories such as Livestock stay understocked for now.  This would also make it much easier to find an item for which you were searching, such as the Firestarter Kit.

Yup, this would indeed be useful. The list is of course always expandable once the basics items are in the game we might see if we have too few items in a certain category and expand there.

Oh, BTW: An additional 1-2 sentence description (short and straight to the point usally, unless it's a more important item) of each item would be perfect as well in this context. If we have prices and items description you will very soon be able to walk around in Nepris, look in chests, pick up things, drink health potions and so on:)

Nice list Bard Judith.  But I have one thing I would like you to change....please.

The nomads on the Steppe of Kruswik will not sell a mare or stallions, only geldings, at the auctions held in Horth, or anywhere else for that matter.  Well it isn't done yet but when we move that way that is the way I will be writing it.  When the entry is ever done it will make sense why they are protective of their horses.  Or at least that is my hope.

This is the Rusik horse by the way.  So if you could do that please I would appreciate it.

So the Rusik is only bred there?!
How weird...

www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/medievalprices.html

is one resource I plan to use.   There is also a site (which I had Google translate from Italian, so it's a bit hard to read) which provides a comparative price list for an on-line simulation (as far as I can make out) and has a very comprehensive range of items.   Art - does Fief have anything that would help us out here?  Perhaps you could post or email me the relevant data, if so?

Yeah, Fief has some price lists, Judy... War prices (arrows, crossbows etc.) and Trade prices (butter, cheese, bread etc.) - I'll send you the Fief file soon so that you can take a look:)

would the pricelist include price-differences, like fresh fish isn't so expensive by the sea, or the firewood less expensive in the middle of a forest than on the plains?

Yeah isn't it terrible I ask for a small thing like that.  I mean what was I thinking?:o   How stupid of me to forget the concept of this world.  The people only exist, everthing else belongs to public collective ownership or control for the basic means of production, distribution and exchange.  The only aim for operating is for use rather than profit.  I would not want any one tribe to get anything someone else might not have.

I was very sad when my eight year old daughter got on my computer and erased all my Santharia notes and projects.  But now I guess it is for the best, I mean I may become an evil writer and might do the unforgivable and, "specialize" .

So the best thing for me is to not use any ideas and wait till someone tells me what and how to write.

*scratches head*
Maybe I should have added a smiley on that post.
*wishes she was like Tarq or Xarl, who did not need a smiley face for people to see the joke*

Sorry for ruining the Dream for yet another important player.
