I've made a first Flash movie, just for testing the possibilities of Flash and to see what I can do already with this software. Unfortunately I've done this project in German (illustrating a poem of mine), so you won't understand anything:(   But I wanted to post the URL so that you can see at least how it works. You can check it out at

members.aon.at/artimidor/..._frame.htm
or (without music)
members.aon.at/artimidor/movies/woge.htm

There's not much action in this movie, at least it's a melancholical poem (and not a short one), but anyway. However, at the end of the movie you can see the sun ascending to the sky (and descending again), reflecting it's rays in the water, which is quite lovely, I guess. I think I can use part of this in a Santharian movie too.

The movie is ca. 240 KB currently (not very optimized, so it could be MUCH smaller) and it has no preloader and no button to end it, but I didn't want to waste my time with such things currently. Just hit the "back" button on your browser when it's finished:)

As I've already mentioned: This movie was only for testing purposes. All following movies I'll do will be done for the Santharian cause - look forward to them=)

Is this with flash v5. I can accept .swf, but with Netscape I don't really see very much. Just a bunch of garble that doesn't even use up half of my screen. I can hear the music alright. The only time I can see any blinking, is when I look at the source code.

Yup, it's Flash 5 and you should have the latest Flash plug-in on Netscape in order to make it work.

Okeydokey. Just had a look at the problem and the movie didn't work with Netscape here either. Made changes, so it now works here (Netscape 4.5). Try again, Winlok!

Some notes:
- The music isn't played in Flash, I use the MIDI-Player for it at another (invisible) frame at the screen.
- As the music is a MIDI-file the quality at the Netscape plug-in is worser than on IE.
- If you have a slow machine resizing the window where the movie is played in helps a lot to make it faster.
- I don't know exactly, but I guess there should appear a plug-in download message box now automatically if you don't have the latest Flash plug-in. Can't check that from here, so keep me informed...

Opera is showing everything just fine, seems I downloaded the flash plugin automatically with the newer version. For once this browser cooperates with IE ;)

Cool.. One critic point, though. The Sunglow is not intended to be green is it? Don't know if it is because you chose the wrong color or you used "overlay" as the layer setting (yellow and the blue sky = green)

For me as a native German I think the speed is alright and fits to the music which sounds, yes, like midi. :)

Cool work for a test thingie.
Perhaps I should try my hand on Flash, too. It's somewhere on my HD, never tried it, till now.

Ah, yes... Colors, colors, colors... *sigh*

But can't really image how I can change it. The sun is a circle with a complex color trangression to transparent - same with the reflection on the water. If blue and yellow turn out green when getting transparent there seems to be no chance how I can prevent it...

Check the blending effect. There should be settings similar to Photoshop. E.G. Overlay, Exclusion and Difference might create this strange color-mix.
Choose normal or multiply instead. Perhaps this works better.
If this is not the case Flash is doing other very weird things to calculate this transparent effect..

Just my 2 cents by someone who has no idea of Flash.. ;)

Problem is: You can't simply change a color anymore after it is rendered and converted to a Flash symbol, Koldar. I'd have to do the complete animation of the sun and the reflections again, which would be a work of several hours. Also, e.g., if you make a typo in one of the lines (on which you use a certain effect) - bad luck and once again... That's the main problem with Flash. You MUST have a plan before you start something, which you simply try to make real. It's not as easy as with Photoshop. You don't animate objects with Photoshop, which has some advantages...

But you animate with 3d-Studio and After Effects. :)

Somewhat unbelieveable that Flash is merging your effects and properties while you're still working on your project.

In After Effects you have your footage, your layers and your layer effects and everything keeps independant from eachother. When you mess something up you can't mess up everything (except by composition faults which is an organizing problem).

I'll look into Flash 5 now, too!  :)

Looked into it now for one problem and was very confused. Well, it's very late already..

Depressing little poem. I know not a word of German but the background of a murky sky and even murkier sea is very melancholic.....and very good Flash effects for a first-timer :)  What does ich bin (insert German word I can't remember here) woge means??

The poem means translated to English "I am a wave" and it recounts the story of a wave somewhere out there in the infinity of the endless ocean, moving towards the horizon, every day and night, on a long, long journey without rest. It is happy that it is not alone, that it is a wave among many other waves. And it only delights in the wind who directs it towards the unknown. Most of the time everything is silent, but it thinks not much of the sun, who turns her rounds and is returning again and again, day in, day out, without moving ahead. The wave sees not much hope, but it thinks that it will arrive somewhere, sometime. It also guesses that the wind doesn't tell the truth. The truth, maybe, that to arrive also means to strand somewhere.

Sounds very...melancholic! I don't think I'll ever look at a wave the same again :)  And you managed to incorporate all these concepts within a few lines?? Wow! I'm impressed!

Well, at least I think to be a poet from birth on. And the Flash-movie-poem is one of my classics=) Though I have to admit that it's probably nothing which will cheer you up, I guess...

Files have been replaced again, but the question remains how long this will last. SMF support will have a look at the security problem.

It has been hacked. The third time in 3 days. I need to replace the changed files again (won't happen before evening) - and then see what the SMF support recommends as a strategy.

Arti, could you maybe take a look at the RPG board? I got a message from my anti-virus program and now I can't access the column on the right with the list of current threads and the shoutbox. Thankies :)
