On June 8th, 2004 an astronomical event of great scientific importance will occur when the planet Venus crosses the face of the Sun as seen from the Earth. This event, called a transit of Venus, last occurred in 1882, so no one alive today has ever observed it!

Such a transit is of great importance because it allowed astronomers in the past to measure the distance between the Sun and the Earth, and to determine the real size of the entire Solar System.

The entire transit of Venus on June 8th 2004 will last six hours and will be visible from Europe, North and East Africa, the Middle East, India and most of China and part of Canada!



The duration of the transit will be:

in England and Portugal: from 6:20 to 12:23

in Central Europe: from 7:20 to 13:23

How to observe?

Never look directly in the sun! You will damage your eyes. don't use an inadequate cover!

Either you have still your sunprotection glasses from the 1999 eclipse of the sun or you do a projection. (Look at the kids site). You can try as well to mirror the sun into a "dark" room. Take a normal handmirror and put it in an envelope in which you have made a hole of about a cm in diameter (form not important). Try to mirror the sun into this dark room on any not to distant wall. You will get a projection of the sun onto the wall and can watch the transit easily. (The bigger the sun appears, the fainter it will be, so try to find a compromise.

Heard of it in the news as well... Though it obviously won't be that spectactular as the 1999 eclipse which was indeed quite phenomenal and eerie - and caused us to have 3 hours delay to get to work because of the masses of people trying to get to the perfect spots... :lol  Well, we'll see:)

Oh I see, so that's how Venus wants to be huh?  Well fine so be it!  I didn't want to be able to view it from California anyway.  *goes off in a huff at not being able to see Venus*

Yeah, it is just great!

The whole neighborhood, especially all kids are in my garden to have a look now and then through my telescope! (we have holidays here)

Some last remarks.
On the official Venus Transit site ( www.vt-2004.org) still new photos which are sent in from people around the worl are pupblished.
One iis quite interesting, double transit: Venus and ISS (spacestation)
here


Some numbers of traffic, this institute of course never has at normal times (though it moght be normal for google)

On the day of the transit, they had 45 000 000 hits in 8h!
At peaktimes the rate was 2200 hits/sec
They gave away 1,5 terabyte on information.
