I was sure I had created this before, but there's no trace of it either in the Compendium or in my computer, so... now that we have all of the ingredients necessary, we can produce some uniquely Santharian foods!  Note the spelling of 'recipe' as 'receipt', the old-fashioned way.  Also note that this will eventually be a graphic illustration (an aged, stained piece of paper with the receipt handwritten, and the stuff currently in brackets written in a different script with a darker ink, as if a granddaughter had been using her grandmother's old receipt!)

There are no entries for leavening ingredients - and I'm not sure just how one would go about writing them - so for now we must assume that yeast (which is a wild sporing organism, by the way) and soda (natural chemical substance) exist in Caelereth, or most of the chemical reactions that occur in baking would not be possible!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Receipt for Kao-Kao & Doch Nut Cookies

1 dipper Hwaet (wheat) Flour
½ ladle Soda (a leavening ingredient)
½ ladle Sea Salt
2 scups Milchbutter
3 scups Foridite Sugar
4 drops Skyweed Syrup (vanilla)
½ sip of water
2 ayren (eggs)
1/10 od of Kao-Kao, chopped fine
2 scups of Doch Nuts, chopped coarse

Do thou mix the Flour, Soda, Salt, and set aside.  Combine the Milchbutter, Foridite, Skyweed Syrup, water, and Ayren well together.  Add dry to wet and stir heartily.  Then thou mayest put the Kao-Kao and Doch Nuts into the mixture and it shall be ready.  Place by ladlefuls upon an iron sheet (and look that thou grease the sheet before with a nut’s worth of Milchbutter or thy cookies shall stick) and pat each scoop down flat with the back of thy ladle.   Bake in a goodly warm oven until the edges do be brown and crisp and the Kao-Kao hath melted.

Actually, the old entry lies still around here at my desktop, Judy... Sorry, but there are various things lying around at my desktop, which sometimes are forgotten, but at least I keep everything - or try to... And in fact I planned to put this one up - thought about a page in the Treasures and Oddities section...

So take a look at your original receipt (along with additional comment text), maybe you can combine the old and new version to make a final piece out of it... If you'd have an introduction paragraph about Dame Sausade and her book as well, you'd make me perfectly happy of course;)

----

Original entry from sometime at the last millenium:

Kao-Kao Bit & Doch Nut Cookies (Bard Judith)

6 and ½ scups of Golden Rain flour
½ ladle tartar powder
1/3 ladle finely crushed salt
½ dipper milchbutter
½ dipper Mahood sugar
2 medium-size Brown Taenish eggs
2 ladles milch
1/3 ladle mixed Foridite & Fragranspice
½ scup chopped Doch nuts
1 scup finely ground Doch nut&custard powder
2 scups Kao-Kao bits
1 scup Albus Kao (white chocolate) stars

Make sure oven is of a medium heat and stoke well that it may remain evenly heated. Take a flat pan or piece of tin and grease it softly with a morsel of milchbutter. Combine the flour, tartar powder, and salt, and set apart in their own bowl. Take another bowl, and mix the milchbutter and Mahood sugar. Break in the eggs and stir. Pour in the milch and stir. Add the mixed spices and stir. Take the flour mixture and add to the whole, stirring well until the arm is tired and the dough becomes stiff. Set aside one-quarter of the dough from the rest into a small bowl. Add the chopped Doch nuts to that small amount of dough. Take the large portion and add the nut&custard powder and the Kao-Kao bits. Mix well. Make up the Kao-Kao dough into small balls the size of a brownie’s fist and set them upon the buttered pan. Press to the thickness of a baby finger with a mug bottom or the palm of the hand. Make up the nut dough into morsels, as a grape size, and set one morsel atop each flattened circle of Kao-Kao dough. Press down again gently. Set one star of Albus Kao atop each cookie and press in gently. Put the pan into the heated oven, for as long as a bard may sing “Lightly Groweth the Wild Rose”, or until the cookies are set and a soft Taenish brown colour at the edges. Remove and let cool.

Dame Sausade's Cookery Boke: Being a Collation of Receipts From Variouse Parts of Sarvonia"

should be the page title....rather like Master Tribell, The BabeTales, or the compendium of the great Federkiel.... we need some more historical personalities!

I see Dame Sausade as being a sort of Mrs. Beeton/Martha Stewart of her time, compiling various recipes from across the country and putting little comments in about them that show her personality... and once we have such a figurehead, anyone can write a 'receipt' and send it in to her (grin) for inclusion in her famous Cookery Boke!

And now I know as well what Pinn will get as dessert... :lol

(Appreciates the Bard's attempt to cover Arti's meager cooking skills by giving his Ilbeth character a receipt in hands... ;)  )

Aha!  So THAT'S what happened to it!  It must have been one of those things that got left on my old computer... (muses)

Well, I'm glad you had a copy, Art!  I will try and fuse them - I'd like to eliminate the items that we don't really have in Caelereth to date and make it a realistic (but still usable) recipe.

Also, I've got about three or four others coming.  People have expressed some interest (although I know that cookery is not essential, it does make for fun reading), so I made up a few 'receipts' (as they will be called in Santharia, anyhow).

Perhaps, if you'd like, the innkeeper at the Pines Hostel could be persuaded to share his receipt for Roast Taenish with the adventurer?  :D    It doesn't have to be a quest, just more information in the same way that our fishermen will tell legends if asked...  And of course Pinn's mom will be happy to hand out some Kao-Doch cookies!

And perhaps -  in terms of organization within the Compendium -  we could have a new page called "Receipts and Cookery" (which could indeed be in Treasures or Curiosities) with an intro paragraph that says something like:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following recipes, or 'receipts' as most Santharians call them, have been collected from all over the continent of Sarvonia.  For the collection as it appears here we are greatly indebted to "Dame Sausade's Cookery Boke: Being a Collation of Receipts From Variouse Parts of Sarvonia".

Dame Sausade tells us that she has tested and tasted each and every dish included, and readers of the Compendium who desire further instruction in cooking may apply to her Dameschool in New Santhala at their convenience. Readers are also always welcome to send her new receipts which they have developed that may be of interest.

Most ingredients are available throughout Sarvonia, with only a few of the specialty spices and flavorings being hard to find outside of the cities; however, our well-established trade routes enable most aspiring chefs to have access to almost any product on the continent!

Please enjoy the recipes which we have provided for you - and if you try them, Etherus-make-thy-tongue-keen so that you may enjoy them even more!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

That way anyone doing a search for 'recipes' or 'cooking' or 'ingredients' in the compendium will get where they want to directly, while anyone doing a search for the items themselves (say 'Taenish' or 'Kao-kao') will also have the page show up, albeit lower down the list.  Sounds good?

Yup, fine with me... :)

In fact I also thought already about a quest for the game that another fisherwife in Nepris wants to have this specific receipt (the cookies), but is somehow cross with Ilbeth - and so the player would need to get it for her. I'm sure we coudl arrange something in this direction;)

Well, Mimi loves candies or cookies dearly!

Judith, why don't you make two varieties of cookies?

I see the board has been deactivated. Lets hope for a quick solution!

Files have been replaced again, but the question remains how long this will last. SMF support will have a look at the security problem.

It has been hacked. The third time in 3 days. I need to replace the changed files again (won't happen before evening) - and then see what the SMF support recommends as a strategy.

Arti, could you maybe take a look at the RPG board? I got a message from my anti-virus program and now I can't access the column on the right with the list of current threads and the shoutbox. Thankies :)
