@ Art:  I thought of keeping the 'meanings' rather mysterious, indeed - philosophical and arcane, appropriate for alchemical usage... ;)

Just for an example:

<|   (sample rune 1)  - "The Virgin's Tresses" -  'protection'  - Willow Bark under a Grey Cloud  - that which shields the vulnerable

-{^   (sample rune 2) - "The Mithril River" - 'energy' - Vitals of A White Stag - an undammed flow with purity

|/|   (sample rune 3) - "Hraven Songs" - 'asymmetry' - Three-Lobed Onn Leaves in Fall - a rusted edge on a grandther axe

That sort of thing, you know...

Wow... I was thinking something much simpler than that... your samples are a bit more complicated than that which I had to offer...

At any rate... I was thinking more of a classification system....

For example...

(^) : Fire rune: A simple flame...
(6) : Water Rune : A droplet of water...
(~) : Wind rune : A flowing breeze...
(X) : Earth Rune: <insert earthy something>

Then there would be the Non-basic ones... like the ones Judy mentioned. They way to give the runes meaning were to be to combine the runes.

So... for example, a rune saying protection from fire would be...

(<|) + (^) = (<| ^)
And protection by fire would be...
(^) + (<|) = (^<|)
Or something to that effect...

Naturally such things would be less crude than Keyboard deviations... but that os sort of what I had in mind...

I understand, Chronusian - my 'keyboard' runes are only placeholders to represent what would have to be hand-drawn complex images.  I wouldn't have keystrokes shaping the runes either.

However, I do disagree with you on the presentation and function of Ximaxian Runes.  We have more than enough different languages and fonts on the site already and do not need another system to translate English/Tharian!   As Art points out, Styrash has already been established as the 'tongue of magic' and the system in which spells are written. These Ximaxian runes, then,  should NOT be like Egyptian hieroglyphs with simple sounds/translations which can be put together into phrases and words, or like the ThergerimTaal runes which are one-to-one letter/sounds of their own.

Rather, they should be more like the Norse runes - as Orril suggested - with complex meanings and ambiguities, used primarily for divination and protection.  They should be associated with magical usages AND believed by the common people to have powers of their own. ... as might be seen in the quote below...

"The symbol which begins the inscryption on the Dragonward Tower, despite having the sense "Integrity Stands - Cut Granite Against Any Wind - Resolution", has come to mean simply 'Dragonward' to non-mages.  Amulets with this rune are still sold by charlatan hawkers in the marketplaces for placement above one's doormantel or hearth, as they claim its primary virtue is protection from fire.   Thus the original sense and the power of the Resolution Rune has been diluted and corrupted by mere superstition  and peasant simplicity, even as the deeper meanings in the movement of the stars and the signs of Nature may be claimed for idle weather-prediction by the yokel farmboy..."    Geridwhin Llynan, Earthdruid of Scythe Grove

You might want to look at this entry as well (in particular the Worship section):

The Cults of Mari

Not that it's an extremely original idea, but anyhow, kinda touches on what you're building here...

No offense taken!  Surely we can disagree without offending?  I hope my post was civil as well, Chronusian - I just have a different viewpoint of how these runes should be used and would eventually like to see that very old concept come to fruition.  Too much always on my plate...

Hugs! :hug

Ah, too bad that internet is so restricted in China, Ferra. Can't be much fun surfing the web that way if Big Brother's watching you... Hope you enjoy your stay nevertheless!

Hi, dear Arti and other developers!

This year I am in China and cannot use any Google services including YouTube. For this reason I stopped uploading new Nepris videos. I can also not read any comments there.

It just crossed my mind that this information might be useful to you.

Cheers
