EDIBLE GRAINS AND GRASSES OVERVIEW

OVERVIEW

Grasses are among the most common plants in Caelereth as they cover vast spaces and can be found in practically every climate and often colour the landscape green. However, while many of these grasses might seem similar to the untrained eye there is actually a huge variety of such plants, and a good deal of them are eatable and are cultivated throughout the lands.

Overview. The following edible grains and grasses have been recorded so far in the Compendium:

ACORN GRASS, THE
Acorn Grass is an important plant of the Alianian Hills, where it is primarily found. Its range extends along the coast of the Adanian Sea as far as the town of Veltin, where further spread is restricted by drier, cooler climates to the north. On the Alianian Hills, thick stands of Acorn Gass carpet the ground, whereas further north between Istarin and Veltin, it is only found sporadically on windswept hillsides and only reaches half its potential height of 4 fores. It grows in a thick mat that holds soil in place even on the steepest slopes, which prevents soil from being washed away by the intense winds and rains that strike the Alianian Hills during the winter months. The diminutive residents of these hills, the Dogodan halflings, use the young, green leaves as forage for livestock in the spring, and in autumn, they harvest the fibrous stems of Acorn Grass to produce baskets and hats.

The Alth'ho Grass

ALTH'HO GRASS, THE
The Alth'ho's skin is soft, with thick tendon-like line running through it. It has a fine root system that does not extend very far into the ground. In the summer season the grass can reach anywhere from a half ped to a full ped in height, with it's color becoming a golden brown. It is mainly used for grazing purposes and can mainly be found in the Sarvonian north. Return to the top

AR'PUN GRASS, THE ("SHAKEGRASS")
Ar'pun or Shakesgrass is one of the hardiest desert grasses on Caelereth, thriving in extreme dryness, heat and other unforgiving conditions. Growing in patches, it can reach two peds in height, and can be found in places where no other plants can survive. From the south of the Aj'Nuvic Grounds to the freezing, but dry, regions of Northern Sarvonia, Ar'pun can survive all but that which others need to live - water.

The Bredden Grain

BREDDEN GRAIN, THE
Bredden is a small ivory grain that comes in a male and female plant, and must be sowed in mixed fields in order to flourish. The resultant flour is fine, white, and high in gluten, making a tasty, airy loaf.

CRYSTAL GRASS, THE
Crystal Grass is a rare and beautiful plant. In fact, it is so rare that few may ever see it in their lifetime. However, Crystal Grass can thrive in any climate or condition so long as it meets certain conditions. While appearing to be made of crystal it is just as flexible and sturdy as regular grass. An interesting property of this plant is that when the wind blows through it Crystal Grass produces a mournful melody. Return to the top

FLYING SPARKS, THE ("SUN SPARKS", "BURNING GRASS")
The Flying Sparks (also called Sun Sparks, Fire Sparks, Burning Grass or Blood Grass) is a kind of grass that can only be found in Northern Sarvonia. It is unique among other grasses in that it traps living creatures and uses their decomposing bodies for nourishment. The name "Flying Sparks“ is derived from its seeds who need extreme heat to germinate and are carried away by the arising winds during a grass fire, resembling fiery sparks, especially in the night. But as spectacular is the sight, when the seeds are blown away by the winds by day, glimmering in the sun in a red-golden hue. "Burning Grass“ or "Blood Grass“ it is called because of its appearance in autumn, when whole areas in the north are dipped in a karikrimson red. It is easy to recognize a field of Burning Grass that has burnt to the ground, for a mass of scorched bones still remain, even though the grass has been consumed by flames. Return to the top

FURZE GRASS, THE
This coarse, roughly-edged grass grows thickly clumped, tending to form small hummocks of soil around its roots. A furze-covered tract of land is unwieldy to walk upon because of these low cobbles, although hooved animals have far less difficulty than humans. It prefers moisture and is often found around or composing swamps. A deep greyish green, with sawtoothed purple and red edges, as if it had already wounded a passerby, the furze grass stands about two palmspans high. Furze is considered an important part of the Caelereth ecosystem by providing a habitat for a multitude of insects, amphibians, small rodents, and other creatures low on the food chain.

GOLDEN RAIN, THE
Golden Rain is the best sort of grain you can find in Caelereth. It is expensive to grow, but the loafs you can bake with it are of an extreme good quality, so it’s especially popular with the upper classes in Santharian society. Return to the top

HUBUBAT GRAIN, THE
Hububat is a multi-headed grain used and produced in massive quantities by the short-statured Morchini people of the Moredein Kaerath region of Northwest Nybelmar, the Hububat Grain is one of the region's largest sources of income as well as one of the Morchinis main food sources. Its purple flowers and golden seeds lend their characteristic colours to the large fields, called 'reys', covering the Kazai Morchin-i. Known to be the main ingredient for the highly alcoholic drink going by the name "Jinn", as well as the primary resource for Gida, which is the base of the Morchini diet, Hububat Grain is a very valuable plant to these people.

Incense Grass

INCENSE GRASS, THE
Incense-Grass or Scent-Weed (Styrásh:
Eferán'in or Eferán'in) is a scented wild grass, which grows about knee-high to a human before sprouting florets. Florets are grass stalks which divide into multiple fine purplish hairs at the apex and then bud tiny purple petals. Spreads, albeit slowly, by means of a tough underground rootlet system. Eferán'ín grows well in moister portions of the central plains of Santharia.

The dried stalks are often cut and used as strewing rushes for cottage floors or as thatch. The stalks are also burnt individually as a natural deodorizer and air fragrancer; the odour is rather like a combination of clove and juniper. It is not a common animal feed, as it will scent the milk and even meat of cows, goats, and other domestic stock with its characteristic sharply spicy aroma. However, venison and wild game that have had this flavour infused by browsing on "Scent-Weed" are highly prized on the tables of the wealthy city-folk.

KNIFEGRASS, THE ("RAZORGRASS")
Knifegrass (also refered to as "Razorgrass") is a rather dark plant growing within forests in the Shadowlands primarily. Known for their slender, sharp-edged blades and the rather dark green that paints their leaves, the Knifegrasses tend to be rather aggressive, and have been known to take over other grasses or even small flowers, choking them out. The blades of Knifegrass are so thin and stiff that they have been known to make small cuts in bare flesh, and it is advised that people be wary not to walk on the grass barefoot, even though it may appear harmless. The Ota Grain

OAT GRAIN, THE
Oats are a basic, hardy, and inexpensive grain which is available throughout Sarvonia, used both as a sustaining food for sentient beings and an excellent source of feed for domesticated animals. Names and Types of Oat Grain are: Oats, Grainoats, Groats, Cut Groats, Crimped Oats, Oatmeal, Seed Oats (Tharian); Oughts (Thergerim), Avens, Avins, A'vensa'atyva (Elvish); Parritch Oats, Porridge Oats (hobbits).Return to the top

PEAT GRASS, THE
Peat Grass is a tough plant growing primarily in the Stone Fields of Peat in Northern Sarvonia. This plant is colored in a grayish-green hue, which sometimes makes it hard to see against the stones of its habitat. The grass has the unique ability to hibernate during the cold seasons of autumn and winter and grows profusely during the warmer seasons during spring and summer. The plant is a vital part of the survival of the animals living in the Stone Fields. Return to the top

PFEPPER GRASS, THE ("PFEFFER", "FIRE GRASS")
Growing all over Sarvonia, where it is neither too wet nor too cold, the Pfepper Grass (Tharian), "efér'echár" (Styrash) or „Emesz'Batuk“ (Ashz-Oc) is an unspectacular grass, but well loved, because its seeds provide cooks with an easily accessible, moderate hot to hot spice. It is similar to the more expensive, imported peppercorn, which borrowed its name from the indigenous pfepper seeds. Though it is common, it is not cultivated like wheat or bredden grain. For reasons unknown the tilth of this plant is never very successful, despite the relatively simple needs of it concerning soil or weather conditions. Return to the top

Pheasant Grass

PHEASANT GRASS, THE
Tawny plumes of seed heads decorate this longstemmed wild gold grass. Also a major component of the plains ecosystem, Pheasant Grass grows from one to two peds high in small copses or thickets. It dries quickly and is very attractive, keeping its shiny golden colour and not dropping seedheads everywhere. Birds thrive on the grain, and horses enjoy the cut dried "pheasant hay" in the winter.

The Red Grain

RED GRAIN, THE ("MARGERT STALK", "BEERLEY")
Red Grain (Thergerim, “Margert Stalk”) is a long, slender plant that is native to the cold plains of Northern Sarvonia. It stands about the height of man’s waist, and is very useful as a food product. The seeds of this plant are ground up into flour, and used in baking by peoples all over the north. It also is used as a source of fermentation for beer and as an ingredient in other malt beverages by several tribes. A bright shade of red, this plant blooms with flowers every spring in colours of orange, white, and yellow. Its seeds, which are referred to as "Beerlay", are an off-white colour.

RIZJO PLANT, THE
The Rizjo (RY-so) plant is a cultivated grassy plant that is usually grown in flooded fields. Though during spring and summer it is brilliant green in color, it becomes a golden-brown in autumn, when the fields are drained for harvesting. This plant produces numerous small kernels, which may be boiled, simmered, steamed and eaten. These kernels are known in the plural as Rizj (Rys, Rise) and form an important part of the Nybelmarian diet. They are also commonly fermented into an alcoholic beverage called "Rizji (RY-zee) Wine". The Shade Grass ("Woodsweed")

SHADE GRASS, THE ("WOODSWEED")
Shade Grass, as its name implies, grows in shady forests or in places that have little or no direct sunlight. For this reason it is often also known as "Woodsgrass" or "Woodsweed". Shade Grass will grow nearly anywhere that is protected from the sun and has a layer of dirt for the grass to get its thread-like roots into, although it will even grow on dark tree branches or on the roofs of well-shaded houses. It is known for being extremely soft to the touch. Return to the top

The Wean Grass ("Milk Grass")

WEAN GRASS, THE ("MILK GRASS")
Wean Grass (or "Wean's Hair" or "Milk Grass") is a type of plain grass with very fine, short blades. Turns a pale yellow in the autumn and bleaches almost to white in colder zones. The main pasturage for the Auroran plains. This short, delicately-bladed grass is nonetheless sturdy and prolific. A light yellow throughout most of its growing season, it bleaches almost white in strong sunlight. Growing evenly only to a height of one palmspan, its smooth blades have a silky sheen and a thin centre rib. Under the surface of the soil its roots are thin and tightly matted, like most grasses. Return to the top

WHEAT GRAIN, THE
Wheat is one of the most important grain crops on Caelereth, as the kernels of this plant are often ground into a fine powder called flour and used to make bread and other such products. Different varieties of Wheat plants grow for different periods of time, but all of them start out green before turning to golden-brown, and fields of Wheat at harvest time often look like a rippling, golden ocean.
