MISCELLANEOUS EDIBLE PLANTS OVERVIEW

OVERVIEW

All those kinds of edible plants that cannot easily be put in other categories like Cultivated Plants, Fruits and Berries, Grains and Grasses, Spices and Flavourings, Tubers or Vegetables end up in this category, where we collect the rest of the edible plants.

Overview. The following miscellaneous edible plants have been recorded so far in the Compendium:

BANDIT'S LEAF, THE ("STEAL WEED")
This odd weed is also known as "Steal Weed" and "Leech Leaf" amongst farmers and is one of the worst problems they have to face while growing crops. Bandit’s Leaf is famous for its strange method of reproduction and its parasitic nature. Some people say that the Steal Weed was imported from Santerran coastal forests where you can find a larger but less dangerous version of its Sarvonian relative. Although the plant has several usages, it can for instance be smoked and the fruits can be eaten, it is very rare considering it can be only found in certain areas on Caelereth and many believe that it’s an ill omen when found in farmer’s fields.

BETHELATRON VINE, THE ("BETHELOM")
This plump, foul-smelling plant is found growing on the rocky coasts of R'unor where it appears to thrive in soil not suited to many other plants. The Bethelatron gets around the problems of poor soil by the expedient of trapping and consuming flesh in the large bowl-shaped structure in its centre, called the pod. Its most frequent meals are carrion birds as well as other scavengers drawn to the smell. The nectar which is produced only during the flowering of this plant gives off a delightful fragrance; it is collected and formed into various expensive and tasty drinks. The flower of this plant is called the Bethelbloom. Return to the top

The Cavernfire Bush

CAVERNFIRE BUSH, THE ("KAYFER")
The Cavernfire is a small bush, growing to a height between a man's knee or waist, which is found in caves, tunnels, and shaded areas of the Imlith Mountains in Northern Sarvonia. This plant can only grow in areas of limited sunlight at best, since it will wither when exposed to direct sunlight for more than a few hours a day. The Cavernfire is of great importance to the Susilgerim Dwarves, who use it for food, dyes, and several lesser purposes. This plant is highly revered by them for its usefulness. It is called "Cavernfire" by non-dwarves for its reddish-orange glow, which is especially apparent in the dark caves and crevices which the plant prefers. The Susilgerim Dwarves call it "Khorultir" (an elided form of KhorimyehUltir, "Dying Light"), which most think refers to the poisonous quality of the plant's sap, though some counter that it is a memorial of the death of a great Susilgerim hero who is associated with the plant.

DASHEFRUIT CREEPER, THE
The Dashefruit Creeper is an intriguing plant with its delicious fruit, interesting growth patterns and flammable pit. It is found growing deep within any fertile, humid and tropical forest or jungle of Aeruillin. Locals use the fruit sparingly since, though useful, it is difficult to find and harvest as well as growing in presumably limited supply. Return to the top

The Doch Nut Bush

DOCH NUT BUSH, THE
Doch Nuts are popular Santharian snack food; a very tasty little nut, which comes in a shell that after harvesting, dries and cracks so they are easily opened. The nut leaves a pleasant buttery aftertaste that is beyond description. The shells have a natural saltiness to them, so most people will suck on the shells, crack them apart with their teeth, spit the shells out, then crunch up the nut. Return to the top

The Falsrock Cactus

FALSEROCK CACTUS, THE ("ROCK OF UNTRUTHS")
The Falserock is a small plant, a variety of a cacti actually, that actually looks more like a stone than a living thing. Hiding as it does among the pebbles in the Ráhaz-Dáth Desert, with its gray and brown exterior Falserock has the perfect disguise. If it weren't for the fact that it is a welcome edible treat for the Shendar, it would probably go unnoticed. Falserock is also often referred to as "Rock of Untruths". Return to the top

FLAMING STAR VINE, THE
A tropical plant, the Flaming Star vine grows mainly in warm regions near coastal areas. The vine named for its vividly coloured and star-like flowers is very popular in the poorer regions of Varcopas, but can be found growing wild in most places where the weather suits it. A completely edible plant, the flowers are used to make a desert sauce known for its aphrodisiac properties and its slightly spicy leaves are popular seasoning for fish. The tear-inducing spicy tangled knots of the vine are used to produce Flaming Knots, a popular candy confection among children across the world. The plant also produces a strangely shaped fruit called the "Meldastar". The flower and leaves of the vine are also produce a rich vibrant red dye, which is incredibly expensive due to the large number of flowers it takes to make the dye.

GER-GER, THE
This Cactus has rough grooved brown skin, and no spines, it is considered a relative of the Penokino due to its appearance. Like the Penokino it is virtually spineless and has a brown color, however this plant gets several times larger than the Penokino and can be used for its juice. It grows between 1 and 2 fores long and 1 to 2 hand spans wide and looks much like several large brown melons all connected together. It contains water, like most Cacti and has flesh like a melon, but with a strong earthy, pickled flavour. It ferments quickly and is used as a very nasty local form of moonshine called "Gerjuice". GREENBARK MOSS, THE
An interesting moss species which only grows on the northern side of particular types of trees. Such trees are found in the Auturian Woods, the Paelelon Forest, the Vale of the Brownies, and possibly other forested areas in this middle area of the Sarvonian Continent. The reasons for the moss only growing on the northern face of the trees is unknown, however it is suspected that this is because of the direction of the sun. The moss on the northern side is healthiest at the base of the tree, where the moss is most shadowed.

ICEMILK, THE ("PIXIEMILK")
Icemilk (or "Icemilch", "Pixiemilk", "Garlickbane") is a common weed which grows liberally on wasteland and secrets a white, rosemint-flavoured sap which refreshes the mouth and breath. It grows mainly in southern Sarvonia, from the Heath of Jernais in the north to as far south as Narfost Plain.

WHITE SISTER DESERT PLANT, THE ("GHOST DANCER")
The distinctively shaped White Sister is a beautiful desert plant which deserves her Nybelmarian title of "tree". Her spear-straight trunk reaches almost five peds in height, and her slender, stiff blades appear to be reaching upwards to the drooping ‘head’ of white blossoms that crowns the tree. Useful as a source of plant fibre and of supplementary food, the White Sister prefers hot sun and arid soil. In Sarvonia she is found mostly in the upper parts of the Ráhaz-Dáth Desert, but she is also reported to flourish in the sandy deserts of Aeruillin and the Zhunite areas of Nybelmar. Other names to refer to the White Sister are: Li’accuy, "Speartree", "Ghost Dancer" or Yu-chi. Return to the top

YEE-HAA, THE
Knee-high bush, yellow and tan oval leaves curled under at edges, black glossy berries. Believed by only the most naive to be a Brownie name. Effective de-inhibitor, aphrodisiac, vasodilator. Taken as a tea, infusion or decoction.
