Main Characters

1. WINTER – The protagonist. A monk born with the gift of magic.
2. TORRENT – A Stormblade. He is a close friend of Winter.

Others (listed alphabetically)

AUNT WINN – One of the masters of White Mountain, whom pretty much everyone calls “Aunt Winn”. She is a warm, patient, maternal woman with a practical, no-nonsense attitude to life. Aunt Winn loves to cook and is most likely to be found in the monastery’s kitchen or baking bread in the courtyard. She is widely acknowledged as the most skilled Tideweaver alive today, and Ritualists from all over the Disk travel to White Mountain to seek her counsel.

BLUEBARK – One of the masters of White Mountain. As his name implies, Master Bluebark is a brownie. Like all brownies, he has an affinity for life magic; and like all bluebarks, an affinity for water. It is said that as a young brownie he fell in love with a rivermaid; after she perished on a fisherman’s net, Bluebark devoted himself to the Way.

CLEARTIDE – One of the masters of White Mountain. Wavecaller.

CLOUD – A troubled novice monk. One of the twelve children assigned to Winter.

COLDSTREAM – One of the masters of White Mountain. Wavecaller.

GRASS – A very literal-minded novice monk. One of the twelve children assigned to Winter.

GREYCREST – The oldest monk on White Mountain. One of the masters. Tidewalker.

ICEGALE – One of the masters of White Mountain. Stormcaller. Icegale and Icewave are twins.

ICEWAVE – One of the masters of White Mountain. Tidewalker. Icegale and Icewave are twins.

KAO – Head of the White Mountain monastery. Master Kao is known for his aphorisms and skill in healing. He is a fatherly figure with a rather unique take on keeping time (as Winter says, “He will be back when he is back”). One of the Gifted: Like Winter, Master Kao was born with natural magical ability.

KER – A novice monk with a predilection for quoting Master Kao. One of the twelve children assigned to Winter. Gifted.

MISTBRINGER – Historic figure. Youngest person to become a master on White Mountain.

NETTLE – One of the monks of White Mountain. She hates Torrent, and by proximity, Winter.

ORANGE – A White Mountain monk. One of Winter’s close friends.

PEBBLE – A novice monk who has a not-quite-imaginary friend called Tamarind. One of the twelve children assigned to Winter. Gifted.

RIVERSONG – One of the masters of White Mountain. Wayshower.

SEAFOG – One of the masters of White Mountain. Seakin.

SEASTONE – One of the masters of White Mountain. Wavecaller.

SEED – A novice monk. One of the twelve children assigned to Winter.

SILVERSTREAM – A White Mountain monk. Wayshower.

SNOW – The youngest among the masters of the White Mountain monastery. Tidewalker.

SUNREST – An initiate monk who showed exceptional talent and strength of character, but left before taking the vows. Rumoured to have been banished from White Mountain.

WHITEFOAM – One of the masters of White Mountain. Wavecaller.

WHITESURGE – Matriarch of the Order of Stormblades. She is referred to as ‘Mother’ by members of the Order.

WILD APPLE – A novice monk. Impatient and blessed with an endless stream of questions. One of the twelve children assigned to Winter.
