SANTHARIAN LULLABIES

Contained within this page are small, but very common songs among Santharian children: those that mothers sing to them so that they fall asleep and dream well. Lullabies differ in various parts of Santharian lands, stressing different aspects the ancient kingdom stand for. The origin of the single lullabies therefore is always mentioned at the songs.

SEE THE SLEEPY ILLORYN
BY BARD JUDITH

The following quaint lullabye was overheard in a little southern Santharian town and recorded for the Compendium by the Masterbard Judith. She describes the tune as "plaintive but soothing", using only a simple five-note scale to create a sense of peace and tranquility. Note the way in which "illorette", the technical name for an Illoryn chick, has been beautifully incorporated as an endearment into the lullabye.

See the sleepy Illoryn,
On the silver stream,
Nods her tired graceful head,
Goes into a dream.

Hushie, baby, shush, my darling,
Sleep, my little illorette,
Time for wee ones now to slumber,
Not to cry and not to fret.

See the shimmer on the sea,
Shines like copper ore,
Flashing feathers down shall lie,
Swim and dive no more.

Hushie, baby, shush, my darling,
Mother's precious, do not weep,
Time for chickies all to slumber,
Close their eyes and go to sleep.

THE SLEEPY-MICE
BY BARD JUDITH

The Sleepy Mice are definitely among the strangest species of Santharia that every mother and child know about. When it's dusk and the the Injèrá is settling to rest these tiny critters will appear and nibble on the babies sending them in the land of dreams. Need some music to accompany their appearance? - Then look no longer!

When it’s dusk and Injèrá
Is settling to rest,
Each baby at the breast
Begins to rub a sleepy eye,
Begins to tug an ear and cry,
At dusk when Injèrá is setting all the birds to rest.

When baby scratches at her cheek
And shakes a tired head,
Then mother says, "To bed!
The sleepy-mice are coming – see,
The sleepy-mice are nibbling thee!"
When baby fusses just before it’s time to go to bed.

When baby eyes are drooping shut,
And little mouth is slack,
But baby frets, alack,
‘Tis sleepy-mice have bitten him
And caused the itch in every limb,
When little eyes are tired but there’s still a small stiff back.

Oh, every mother with a child
Knows of the sleepy-mice!
They scurry in a trice,
Throughout Santharia’s kingdom land
And signal bedtime’s close to hand.
Yes, every mother and her child will host the sleepy-mice!

KUGLIMZ LULLABY
BY ALYSEE THE LIKELY

This piece is a traditional Kuglimz song that is sung to little children to make them fall asleep and dream well. It shows the Kuglimz affectionate relation to nature and what part it plays in the education of their culture.

(loosely translated from the Kuglimz’seitre
by F’ash and Alysse)

Beyond ret’tif branches, twilight deepens
Sleep, my little one.
Sleep, my darling child, and rest
Put your head down on my breast
As we listen to
The calling of the nue'mon as they swoop about the trees,
Sleep, my little one.
Sleep, my darling child, and rest
Put your head down on my breast,
As we listen to
The murmur of the river as it ripples in the breeze.

DUSK IS HERE
BY BARD JUDITH
(A Santharian peasant lullaby)

Dusk is here, Injèrá's sleeping,
(Hush my lass, the nightbirds coo),
Night's a blanket Moon is weaving,
(Hush my lad, come lie down too).

Evening's come, a dark sheep stepping,
(Mothers, rest from all you do,)
Over hills where light is fading,
(Fathers, hush and rest now too.)

Stars appear like lighted candles,
(Hush the sky to darkest blue)
Drowsy all the beasts and flowers,
(Hush, my darlings, lie down too,
Hush, my darlings, lie down too...)

SLEEP LITTLE RIDER
BY TORSCHA RAINES
(A Centoraurian lullaby)

Sleep little rider,
The sun's gone to bed,
The plains they are dark'ning
So lay down your head.

Dream you of glory,
Of sword-tears falling red;
Dream thou of peaceful times,
Of warm milk and bread.

Beyond these our grasslands
A world sprawls broad and deep;
Where soon you'll waking wander
But now see only in sleep.

So dream you of far lands
But you don't need to fear.
For you are in the good hands
Of your mama singing here.

So sleep little rider,
The sun's gone to bed;
The plains they'll be dreaming
When you lay down your head.

SLEEP MY LITTLE PRINCESS
BY LUCIRINA TELOR VEVAN

Sleep my princess, sleep little prince,
sleep the sunsmile in the meadow wide.
The alth'ho grass whisper softly a secret
on the wide and open Narfost plains.
And the soft moss bear he yawns,
the sly little mimsy ends his run.
All stop their strive and play
to rest in the soft darkness tonight.

Sleep little girl, sleep little boy,
let your tired eyes close now.
Injèrá's wandering is over for today
She is resting between the purple clouds.
And kandion puppy and kitten of barn,
and the little aelirel in the bush,
and the dolphune in the deep blue sea,
they all go to rest for the night.

Sleep my darlings, fear no evil,
mother rests in her chair nearby.
Looks out through the dark window
and closes the door that leads outside.
And orc and oger and evil troll
can growl all they wish and want.
For father drives them away with his sword.
So sleep, my treasures, sleep,
so sleep, my treasures, sleep.

DALIREEN'S SONG
BY BARD JUDITH
(Hobbit Origin)

Baby mine
Sleep serene
Watched by gentle
Dalireen

Weary head
Tired eye
Time to rest
Do not cry

Hobbitbard
Laughs with thee
In thy slumber
Happily

Merry dreams
She will bring
Go to sleep
As I sing

Baby mine
Sleep serene
Watched by gentle
Dalireen...

SONG OF BIRTH
BY LUCIRINA TELOR VEVAN

Come to this world,
glorious thing.
In joy we greet you,
Cheerily sing.
Nothing so perfect
stands on this earth,
You bring us joy,
oh innocent birth!
Shining so bright,
newborn little moon.
Your smile is a treasure,
worth a fortune.

Come to this world,
fragile and frail.
What deep secrets
could you unveil?
Your eyes so wise,
yet new and clear.
Filled with wonder,
not soiled yet by fear.
Avá´s little creation,
born from a dream.
Of the shining Injèrá
you are a beam.

Come to this world,
to laugh or to cry.
Growing and learning
as summers go by.
Seasons will change,
so will your heart.
Soon you'll forget,
where you did start.
Innocence lost,
bitter fruits reap.
But for now love,
be blessed and sleep.

RAHMAT UDZERA
BY BARD JUDITH
(Shendar Origin)

Rahmat, Udzera,
Hide and tree,
Drink, my darling,
Strong you'll be.

Rahmat, Udzera,
Stars above,
Fill your belly,
Mother's love.

Rahmat, Udzera,
Food and bed,
Hush, my small lamb,
Lay your head.

Rahmat, Udzera,
Shendar-nest,
Sleep, my baby,
Take your rest.

LULLA-LULLA-LAY
BY MUTARE SERPHIROTH
(Erpheronian Origin)

Sleep, my Dear, and close your eyes
Lulla-lulla-lay
Bright stars whisper in the skies
Hear you what they say?

Centaurs playing hide-and-seek
By the moonlit pond.
In the desert jackals shriek -
Stars see far beyond.

In the Highlands Gryphons roam
Seeking out their prey.
Sleep, Dear, you are safe at home
Lulla-lulla-lay.

Fearsome dragon in a cave
Laying in the gold –
Many thieves and fighters brave
Are yet to behold.

Fair elf-maidens on a glade
Playing magic lyres.
Hero with a shining blade
Only fearing fears.

Army marching off to war,
Stubborn eyes aglow,
To defend their native shore
From an evil foe.

And you will grow up someday,
Will be brave at heart;
On a steed will ride away
To fulfill your part.

I shall wave you then goodbye,
And to Gods will pray.
Sleep my dear, now sleep, don’t cry
Lulla-lulla-lay.

NIGHT IS DEEPENING
BY BARD JUDITH

(
A Bedtime Song of Kasumarii origin)

Nyghte ys deep’nyng, munlyghte’s sleepyng
Foode yn bellie, blude yn veenes,
Nyghte byrds cheepyng, wynde ys weepying
Sauve thy muther further paynes.

Nyghte ys deep’nyng, munlyghte’s sleepyng
So shuld babes yn bedd-es low.
Nyghte byrds cheepyng, wynde ys weepying
Babes shuld sylent be ere now.

***

Night is deepening, moonlight sleeping,
Food in belly, blood in veins.
Night birds cheeping, wind is weeping,
Save your mother further pains.
Night is deepening, moonlight sleeping,
So should babes in beds so low.
Night birds cheeping, wind is weeping,
Babies should be silent now.
