THE MINING OF THE STARS
BY BARD JUDITH

There exist many legends about the dwarven God of Trum-Baroll and how He shaped things in the Beginning of Time. One of the most popular stories among the dwarves is the "Mining of the Stars".

ou should picture a dark underground cavern, with a lot of little dwarven children sitting around a fire on a hearth built out from one wall of the cave. A hunched dwarven granny, her beard neatly braided and her apron stained with Uup-Moss, waves her hands through the sparks. "It reminds me," she says gruffly, "of the story of Trum-Baroll, and how he mined the stars from the sky. Would you hear the tale?" The children nod eagerly, humming an undercurrent of delight as she tells the tale in the resonant language of the dwarves.

Between sentences, she clicks two pebbles together and the children chant softly, repeating the last word of her sentence in an eerie echo that trails away into the cavern's darkness.

"Druum HuunGer Ysaril!" she cries, and the children chant,

"Ysaril...Ysaril...saril...ril...il....."
