Title: Shivering Woods Vicinity Post by: Khiera Meneris on January 10, 2004, 11:52:22 PM Walking amidst the surroundings outside of the Shivering Woods, one wonders if the Shivering Woods really lived up to its reputation of being a fearful place of no return. The atmosphere and ambience was peaceful and green. The foliage even seemed ... "friendly". The last thing on anybody's mind would be any form of threat or danger.
It was a little monotonous and dull though, walking around with the surroundings seemingly unchanging for hours and hours at end. There seemed to be little or no sign of human habitation, peaceful as the surroundings may seem. If a traveller had no idea of where he/she was going and how, it would not be easy trying to figure out where to head towards. Elric trudged on in his usual awkward and clumsy way, his sword in its sheath hanging by his side, with Mina and Kiushapo following closely behind ... though probably not too closely behind, because who knows which direction his next fall was going to be. They had been walking a while, though no one had mentioned anything about stopping to rest. The three of them were walking quite near to the border of the Shivering Woods, and the line of Larkentir branches swaying in the quiet breeze with seemingly ghostly whisperings among themselves. Suddenly, a loud rustling was heard to the trio's immediate right, seemingly coming from the woods. Elric immediately spun to face the direction where the loud rustling had come from, miraculously not twisting his legs together and falling over in the process. "Who's there! Show yourself!" A tensed silence ensued when there was no response. Hearing the loud rustle again, Elric cautiously bent down on one knee, and picked up a large pebble. Then, with amazing accuracy, he threw the sharp edge pebble into the direction where the sound came from. A loud "thud" was heard. It had apparently hit something ... or someone. Unsheathing his sword, Elric motioned for Mina and Kiushapo to go take a look at the fringe of the woods what he had hit while he would stand guard. With Shurshing and Fuzzytail residing in one of Cacunai's larger pockets, the rest of the rodents were probably having a much calmer ride with Yerun. When they reached the treeline, or rather they came within sight of the treeline, they stopped and Cacunai turned round to look to Yerun.
All right boy, we've made it this far, now where do we go? Title: Re: Shivering Woods Vicinity Post by: Khiera Meneris on January 11, 2004, 10:16:22 AM @Cacunai & Fluffy:
Yerun had been following Cacunai's lead. In truth, the beetles told him about "Sauwth" and that other confusing word, but Yerun did not really know what those words meant. He was sure that Cacunai did though -- Cacunai seemed to know lots of things, especially where getting out of trouble was concerned. So, Yerun was really surprised when Cacunai stopped and asked him, "All right boy, we've made it this far, now where do we go?" Yerun's response was to look blankly at Cacunai. Had the beetles given him faulty directions?? He hoped not. Cacunai didn't look too friendly when scolding someone. Yerun always cringed ... and he didn't like that feeling. Seems like that was what was going to happen to him now too. That was when something sticklike flew over both their heads. As the loud "thump" was heard on the ground, both saw that it was an arrow, staked ominously in the ground. It had emerged from the direction of the woods, seemingly from within the woods. Yerun's mouth and eyes widened. That was when the second arrow flew out towards them. And the third, and the fourth, and the fifth ... Neither of them had been hit. Judging from the look of things, it probably wouldn't be too long before one of them was, if they stayed motionless where they were. Title: Re: Shivering Woods Vicinity Post by: Kiushapo on January 11, 2004, 12:04:22 PM As they walked down the path, Kiushapo began to wonder if there was somewhere Elric could get help for his condtion, for surely that's what it must be. Honestly wracking his brain for an answer, he almost missed the subtle rustling to their right, noticing it more by Elric's reaction then anything else. As Elric seemingly dispatched whatever was hidden in there with the toss of a stone, he silently applauded the man. Clumsy he may be, but he had a good eye.
Drawing his sword, Kiushapo was a little surprised to see Elric motion for them to take the lead, but he stepped forward silently, using his sword to gently push aside the brush.... Almost instantly (though the arrows traveled fast enough so five or six had flown past them) she dropped low to the ground and tugged Yerun along with her. She let out a very unladylike curse, but then again she wasn't much of a lady, and twisted around to examine the nearest arrow. She quickly saw that it was not of men but of elves, and not her people. Probably the Dark ones rumored to live in the forest. She considered her course of action for only a moment.
Come on boy, follow me like Hell chases you, if you value your life! And don't drop any rats! Without waiting for an answer she took off like a jackrabbit, ducking and doging in a completely random manner, to make herself a more difficult target. Being an elf, her gait was smooth and swift. She was making for the woods by a roundabout route, as they offered the only cover available. She nearly jumped when she heard the rustling coming from the direction of the Woods. She turned to face the direction the rustling had come from, one of her hands reaching for her dagger, while the other hovered over her reagent pouches. I hope it's not one of those dark elves.
Drawing her dagger, she followed Kiushapo towards the Woods. Title: Re: Shivering Woods Vicinity Post by: Khiera Meneris on January 12, 2004, 02:04:22 AM @Mina & Kiushapo:
As Kiushapo gently pushed aside the brush beneath the Larkentir trees at the edge of the Shivering Woods with his swords, the Larkentirs rustled vigorously. They seem so delicate that a mere puff of breath would cause them to sway against each other. But down there, amidst the brush that Kiushapo had held aside with his sword, was no one to be seem. Instead, both Mina and Kiushapo spotted what seemed like a piece of bark lying on the ground, and the pebble that Elric had thrown, on top of the bark. The piece of bark was in an odd, carefully measured and cut shape ... perhaps most accurately described as in a hexagonal shape, though the sides were all uneven. But a bark would have never fallen off from its trunk in such a shape. It would have to be deliberate cut by someone. Something seemed to be imprinted or inscribed on the surface of the bark that was lying face up. But without picking it up, it was hard to discern from a distance. Title: Re: Shivering Woods Vicinity Post by: Kiushapo on January 12, 2004, 02:17:22 AM Stepping forward through the brush Kiushapo glanced briefly at the strange piece of bark before stepping past it to look behind the tree and into the surrounding area. Finding nothing, he called out to Elric "There is being nobody here! But you were knocking the stuffing out of this tree..." His voice full of lighthearted humor, he picked out the piece of bark, the words on it leaping into focus...

Howling in fear, Yerun took Cacunai's lead and sprawled onto the ground head first. The poor Ramblers would have probably have experienced the equivalent of a thousand feet rollercoaster drop. Wretchedly scrambling and always narrowly missing the sharp point of the arrows raining down upon them, Cacunai and Yerun tried to make their way to the nearest clusters of young trees for cover. Suddenly, the hail of arrows ceased just as abruptly as they had started. Silence ensued. Turning back to see if Yerun was alright, Cacunai saw Yerun slowly sit up upright on the ground, his eyes were glazed over, his expression vacuous and he seemed to be staring into space. Cacunai then saw Yerun's lips move, and ... Yerun spoke. Or rather, he cried out, "Mother! Father!" It wasn't the first time Ramblers were under attack. Well, indirectly under attack. They used to see arrows before and knew what they were used for. So when Yerun sat on the ground shouting in some kind of trance, Sparky ran to him and lightly bit his leg: "Come on, boy! We have to hide, before they start shooting again!"
Title: Re: Shivering Woods Vicinity Post by: Cacunai on January 12, 2004, 11:04:22 AM Cacunai watched Yerun with something like a mix between amazement, that he spoke, smugness, because she had been fairly sure he could, and exasperation, because he was just sitting there. After a moment, she realized the flurry of arrows had stopped. Slowly she straightened from her hunched position, and realized she still had all her various makeups and dyes on. Oh well, nothing to do about it now. Pity, though. The silver in her hair would mark her as unusual, and maybe worth a second look. When no new arrows flew, she strode across to Yerun and shook him, none too gently.
Come on, boy, up and at 'em. If your parents are anywhere in that wood, they are no help to you now. As Kiushapo looked closer at the piece of bark in his hand, it was indeed of an odd hexagonalish shape, definitely created and not of nature. Marked with what looked like some kind of dark green dye material on the surface of the bark, was a strange, wavy symbol unlike anything that Kiushapo had ever seen before. It looked remarkably similar to a Styrash symbol, but it was clearly not Styrash, or any form of Styrash that Kiushapo knew anyway. Upon closer inspection, there was pierced a small hole on one end of the bark, as if to allow something to be strung through it. Elric looked at the backs of Mina and Kiushapo, and wondered what Kiushapo meant by "knocking the stuffing out of the tree", "What is it? What did you see?" Yerun sat completely still. The Ramblers had scrambled out from his pockets and were here and there, helter skelter. Shurshing was nipping him in the leg and shouting at him about something. He didn't know. He wasn't really listening. He was as still as a rock and was oblivious to everything around him. He felt someone shaking him. It was Cacunai. She was saying something to him, but only the word "parents" floated into his ear. Yerun's eyes clouded, and he burst into tears, sobbing loudly as he doubled over and curled up on the ground. Title: Re: Shivering Woods Vicinity Post by: Cacunai on January 12, 2004, 01:14:22 PM Oh great. Cacunai shook her head and stood, facing the forest. She saw nothing but the trees, but she figured it was worth a shot, anyway.
Ye of the Shivering Woods! We mean you no harm and wish only to speak with one near your borders! What say you? She knew it was something of a spur-of-the-moment speech, but it might work. Anyway, she spoke the truth. They only wished to speak to "Kestrel". She stood with bated breath, tense and ready to bolt if they started firing. Hopefully her status as an elf would help her... somewhat.... Suddenly she realized she had unconciously moved in front of Yerun. Protecting him. Title: Re: Shivering Woods Vicinity Post by: Fluffy Ramblers on January 12, 2004, 10:36:22 PM Shurshing put her head out of Cacunai's pocket and smelled the air. In the woods, there were people. She didn't know how many, but probably more than one or two, judging by the amound of arrows on the ground. Shurshing pushed Fuzzytail, who was sitting next to her, slowly getting sober again. She squeacked something to him and the mouse translated: "Shrurshing says, don't be afraid if you get captured. We can bite through any rope!" - Fuzzytail hid his face in his hands: "Ooooh!.. What a headache!.."

Cacunai's little "speech" brought only silence all around her. If there was indeed somebody around them right now, they either did not want to make contact with Cacunai, or they had already left ... albeit a little hastily. Yerun's sobs had subsided a little by now. He was trying to wipe away his tears with his already drenched sleeves. He fumbled within his jacket pockets to and slowly scooped up Manymeals and Teapot with his hands -- a little wet and sticky from his warm tears -- and held them close to him, stroking them slowly as he rocked himself back and forth on the ground, as if trying to shake off something unpleasant off his mind. Cacunai stood a while longer eyeing the fringes of the woods to see if there was any response. But there was none. That was perhaps good, because if there were no longer anyone there, then there would no longer be any arrows flying at them. Soon, Yerun had stopped his tears, but he was still all sniffy and had the saddest expression ever on his face. He tugged at Cacunai standing in front of him, indicating that they should go now. He was now even more determined than ever in finding Kestrel. Ok, you can both commence posting in the thread The Shack of Kestrel the Craze. Helli was determined not to be left behind. She limped along, keeping pace with Eve quite stoically and stoutly. If anything, Helli wished that she had a pair of wings and could cover more ground more quickly in search of her son. The vastness of the woods made her nervous though, even though they were merely walking in its vicinity and all was quiet and calm. Where should they start looking for her son?? What if he was in another part of the woods that they were not there searching?? Helli stopped for breath and turned to Eve, "Where are we heading? Where do we start looking??" She looked around her, a little lost, quite forlorn. She started muttering, "You know, my son ... the other son ... bless his soul, Lornin, told me about an abandoned outpost that has been deserted by the men ... perhaps ... perhaps if Lornen was hurt, he would know to make his way there for shelter? Oh dear, where do we start looking ..." Title: Re: Shivering Woods Vicinity Post by: Evelaria on January 14, 2004, 09:27:22 PM Eve smiled as Helli caught up and she subtley slowed her pace and then stopped, turning to look at the woman.
"If I only knew where to start. It seems we are both at a lost. I didn't even take time to ask the Captain, where he usually sends his men. Perhaps we should first look for any signs, such as footprints, weapons, armor...blood, anything that would tell us someone was around." She turned away from Helli, peering keenly into the woods, and when a certain animal call caught her she stopped and looked back at the limping woman. "I have an idea." She turned back to the forest and began to speak in the tongue of animals, which also happened to be the tongue of the ancient tribal Eyelians, none of which Helli would understand unless she was a linguistic/historian. "Animals of the forest, those who are good in nature, follow your good nature and come to my call!" To Helli, it would sound only like a jumbled of words with clicks, hooting, grumbles, and a few small, slightly noticeable chirps. Their walk was mostly uneventful with exception of occasional stop to rest or to eat some of the food she had brought along for their use. It was nearly dark when they came upon the woods and there was very little she could make out with her eyes. Helli watched Eve with a pair of curious eyes as Eve started to make a series of odd sounds that she had only ever heard produced by animals and other creatures, but certainly not humans. She wondered what Eve's idea was, but waited patiently to see what would happen next. Nothing was too odd to be attempted in order to save her son's life. As Eve sounded out to the animals, there was a pregnant pause, and the air around them dripped thick with anticipation of the appearance of some form of creature from within the woods. Then, faint scurrying could be heard, and moments later, three kuatus came hopping and skipping in a zig-zagged erratic manner, only to end up at Eve's feet. If Kuatus could stick out their tongues cheekily, these three would have done so right there right then. They needed to head north, so that is where they would go. She turned to face Helli and smiled.
"Yes, they are talking, they said they spotted a nice tall, brown haired man in the north in a place where men stay. So, I guess that is as clear as it is going to get. So we head north." She opened the bag and poured the acorns out on the floor, letting the squirrels take what they wanted. "Thank you for your cooperation," she said. She turned back to Helli, and smiled. "Now, which way is North?" Title: Re: Shivering Woods Vicinity Post by: Khiera Meneris on January 17, 2004, 01:12:22 PM @Eve:
The Kuatus pounced on the acorns excitedly and greedily, completely oblivious to the subsequent conversation between Eve and Helli. "Yes, they are talking, they said they spotted a nice tall, brown haired man in the north in a place where men stay. So, I guess that is as clear as it is going to get. So we head north. Now, which way is North?" Helli was excited. She did not know what had transpired between Eve and the Kuatus, but Eve seemed to have an inkling of where to find her son. She had lived all her life in Eresh, and she easily knew where the general directions where. "North! Over there!" Helli pointed forward, and started limping forward, anxious to reach whatever destination that laid ahead of them.
