Title: Main Encampment
Post by: Khiera Meneris on November 17, 2003, 11:12:22 PM
You come across clusters of sturdy wooden huts, the whole area teeming with Kyranian guards. Two groups of guards were sparring spiritedly with each other, some were drilling, others huddled into groups around campfires and drank and ate and shared stories and songs. There was a generally jovial mood in the air, everyone was busy doing something, and nobody seems to notice or care that you are standing there watching them.

It took Glayron half the day to reach the encampment but he did. He found a few edible plants to eat along the way but this was no meal. As he approached the camp he stopped for a moment and looked about, trying to find someone who looked like to be in charge. Not seeing anyone who looked like it, Glayron made his way closer to the encampment trying to get near the fire if he isn't stopped before hand.

Glayron, for the purpose of your thread, the time is now 17 Bells.

As Glayron slowly inched his way towards one of the burning outside hearths, suddenly a loud voice sounded out, "Halt! Who goes there?"

A stocky man wearing the insignia and light armour of the Kyranian Royal Guard stood steadfastly in front of Glayron. His eyes were full of suspicion. He was in the midst of sparring with one of the other guards, when he heard the crackling of branches behind him. As he halted his sparring and turned around, he saw Glayron trying to make his way to the fire.

The heavy mace that the guard had in his hands and his piercing stare didn't make him look very friendly at all.

Glayron looked at the man but seemed not bothered at the man's action, almost as if he expected it.

"My name is Glayron Miraewan, I come from the south.  I gained word that there may be a source of work found here.  Have I been mistaken?"

The guard rubbed his bearded chin with one hand, "From the South ye say?" He looked Glayron up and down, "Eyelian, are ye? And work? How good are ye at lifting heavy weights?"

"I think I can handle myself, if that is what you wish me to do," replied Glayron.  He wondered what they would need him to lift in such a place where training seemed to be happening.

The guard gave Glayron another thorough look up and down, and thought that Glayron seemed like a solid, decent person. "Well then, Glayron, my name's Rolalf, second in command to Captain Gavrin here at the main encampment."

He lowered his mace, and his posture seemed much more relaxed now. "The Captain has just gone on his rounds, and i would the person that you would want to talk to when he's not around." Rolalf grinned. "So, ye'r all ready for work, eh? Who told you about work here?" Without waiting for Glayron's answer, Rolalf continued, "Must be one of them tavern maids! Well, then, come along now!"

Rolalf gestured to Glayron for him to follow along, and led the way to the edge of the encampment.

Here, you see a group of guards gathered around, some with machetes in their hands, and some carrying bulky pieces of wood. Rolalf spoke again, "Last night there were strange strong winds, and this Aswude (tree) came crashing down and fell on our supplies cabin. If you could lend a hand hacking it apart and carrying the pieces over there," Rolalf turned and pointed to a pile of chopped up wood pieces a few steps away, "-- then we'll pay you 10 sans for your time."

Rolalf looked at you, "So then, Glayron, still up for the job?"

"A little hard lagour never harmed anyone good sir," Glayron said  "Where shall I get my axe or do you wish me to simply carry the logs?"  Glayron's hand gripped the white staff that he held, not in any threateneing way, but in a manner merely to prepare himself.

Rolalf nodded, and then he turned around towards the group of men hard at work and shouted at them, "Oy! A machete here!"

Someone from the group sent a machete tossing into the air, and Rolalf nimbly caught it on the handle with amazing skill.

Handing it over to Glayron, Rolalf nodded again, "There yer go! That'll chop up that bloody tree well good and fine!" Under his breath he continued cursing and swearing about the tree.

Galyron took the machete as he nodded.  He then made his way over to the fallen tree.  Standing near the tear Glayron slowly removes his shirt, which reveals a well tuned and shaped body.  Placing his shirt on th ground, Glayron begins chopping away at the fallen tree, as he watches the other who are hard at work doing the same thing.

Many of the men cast wary glances at the newcomer but not a word was spoken at least to him. Whispers were passed between the men but the continued their long tedious work of hacking the tree into pieces small enough to carry.

After awhile, the men began to move the pieces to the far side of the camp, dumping the wood into a pile. A few of the pieces were large and needed two men but most of it was handled singlily.

"Hey you! Will you help us carry this to the pile?" a younger man called to Glayron.

"Hey you! Will you help us carry this to the pile?" a younger man called to Glayron.  Glayron looked in the man's direction, then nodded.  "I suppose I could help you," Glayron replied.  Joining the men Glaron helps them carry the larger pieces of wood, finding that they didn't wiegh all too much, at least to him.  "So what brings you here?"

Title: Re: Main Encampment

"So what brings you here?"

The younger man froze for a brief moment, looking at Glayron as if it was the most amusing thing he had ever heard. Then, he burst out laughing. Chuckles were heard from all the other men. Finally, the younger men spoke again, "Aye, don't you know? Where have yer been these 7 long years? We're here to make sure that if the Princess is found or sighted there's someone to take 'er home!" The younger man chuckled again, then a soft sigh escaped from his lips, "If yer ask me though, i don't think anyone could have survived seven long years alone in those wretched woods ... 'specially not a young girl."

As he said this they had reach the pile of large wood pieces heaped together. "Here," the younger man spoke to Glayron again, "Put your hands on these wood pieces and hold them steady till we return with more in a couple of minutes, alright?"

Galron nodded as he reflected on what he just heard from this man.  He hadn't heard of anything that the man just spoke of, though he never really paid much attention to the business of others.  He watched as the men left him there, holding thepeices of wood as directed.

Chirping and chattering could be heard as some birds flew overhead and a couple of squirrels fought over something. For a brief moment they stopped and stared at the man by the wood pile, large black eyes filled with curiousity.

One left the other and cautiously climbed up on the wood pile and stared at the man,nose up in the air finding the scent. As it sniffed it rose onto it hind legs, mvoing its little head back and forth in the wind. It then laid down on the pile, after it seemed satisfied and waited for the other to join him, which it did soon. When the other joined him on the wood, they began their quarrel once again that had been on pause. This took a few moments to complete and it ended with the one that had climbed the wood pile first being the winner.

It then returned to the position of laying on its back staring up at the sun and blinking slowly.

Glayron smiled at the site of the birds and watched silently as they fought between themselves.  When they finished Glayron smiled before he began to whistle, or chirp as it may sound, a light tune.  He wasn't speaking, merely sung to them as he waited for the men to return.

The two squirrels soon seemed to bore of the man and began chatting between them. The "conversation" became heated yet they did not engage in a fight. Eventually one left leaving the one alone one the wood pile. Cautiously, he edged closer to the man; studying, smelling and even poking him. He would then back away only to do the same process over again; studying, smelling and poking.

The other returned and the squirrel who had been studying ceased to say something to the other. The other then walks up to the man and proceeds to do the same thing as the first; studying, smelling, poking...

Glayron looked down at the two squrriels.  Without a thought he spoke to them, with ease.  "Hello little ones.  What are you up to?  Sen anythign interesting in the forest today?"

The two critters glanced at each other curiously. "Interesting? Yes yes...very interesting." the first one chattered.
"Many things happening..." the second one added."Many strange things..."
The two nodded to each other, passsing a few words here and there.
"Tree...no accident!" the first one chatted.
"Such a tree did not just fall over..." the second chimed.
The first shook his head in agreement, "Yes yes...on purpose it was."
"When will they learn to keep their hands off?..." the second one exclaimed.
"When will he learn to keep their hands off?..." the other spat.

Both the squirrels chittered fervently, as if Glayron had asked a sore question. The first squirrel started to speak to Glayron again, "You must ... be careful! Bad! Bad people in the forest! And --"

Before the squirrel could finish though, the thrumping sound of the guards' boots could be heard, and both the critters scattered off into the woods.

Four men were huffing and puffing and carrying a hacked off log, and then placed it into the pile with a heavy thud. One of the men started cursing again, "Those darn winds! Beats the lights out of me that it could bring down such a huge tree! Now we got all evening to clear the mess up, that's just wonderful!"

Another man stepped up to Glayron, "Alright now, you can let go, that big log is going to hold everything in place. A few more pieces to carry here and we can have dinner at the campfire ... you up for some dinner?" He chuckled.

IC:  Glayron nodded and grinned at the mans words.  "Some food sounds good and would be well appreciated," Glayron stated just before a small growl rumbled within.

OOC: Glayron - I would greatly appreciate it if you would write more than just one sentence per post. You are getting a little behind and I can't do everything for you...though I can try, i am only human. This will also make my posts come sooner thus i don't have to think as hard. Thankies. *huggles*

IC: The men led Glayron to the campfire that had been built. Food was being passed around as the men hungrily grabbed at it and devouring it quickly. One of the men handed Glayron a hunk of bread. "Eat and enjoy!" A grin revealed the mouth to be mostly toothless. "Oi an't atin' no 'read. 'At up!"

"Back off Gums!" a commanding voice boomed suddenly making many of the men jump. "You shall dine with me tonight!" He pointed to Glayron. "I 'ould like word with you."

OOC: Sorry, yeah Gararion mentioned this to me as well.  I will try to make my posts a little better.  Tell me what you think, am I getting better?

IC:  Glayron followed the men silent, trying to catch a glimpse of  the to squirels that he had been talking to, thier conversation seemed to get cut off when the other men made their way near.  What were they talking about he pondered.

As they made their way over to a campfire, lit and burning slowly for the fresh cut logs that feed the flames, Glayron noticed that the men look very hungry.  He too was begining to become famished but held back a few small growls from within till he had gotten his chance to eat.  These men surely had worked harder then he had and deserved t be fed before he was.

It didn't take long for the food to arrive, though the sight of what lay before him didn't help his hunger.  Glayron could probally find more norishing food within the forest if he wanted to.  Glayron's thoughts were cut short though as another gentleman approached and seemed to yell something, which made several of the men jump as well as Glayron.  Glayron looked up and examined the man who stood before him before speaking.  "I would be glad to join you sir, I assume I haven't done anything wrong have I," questioned Glayron guardedly.

The man motioned for to follow him, leading him to a large tent and opening the front flap. "Af'er 'ou sir." He bowed low backing away from the door and allowing Galyron to enter. "Go ahead and make 'ouself at 'ome, sir."

There were several other men inside and they all rose at the entering of the newcomer. "Welcome. Please, have a seat." The man in the middle motioned to him to sit in the chair next to him.

Glayron seemed nervous when the man spoke of him needing to find out.  He didn't want to find any trouble coming to these lands but it seemed trouble may have found him.  Forming a small smile in reasponse of the man's laughter, Glayron spoke, trying to hide his nervousness.  "Yes sir, I will try."

Being lead to a large tent, Glayron stepped with and looked about.  It seemed all of these men had some interest in him or something, for they all welcomed him with open hands, one gesturing him to sit beside him.  "Well met good sirs," Glayron said as sat beside the man who offered him a place to rest.  "Thank you sir, names Glayron Miraewan," Glaron said as he tried to act casual with the group of men before him.

"Thank you sir, names Glayron Miraewan,"

The men nodded in acknowledgment before taking their seats once again. Silence pervaded the group as they all ate silently. A plate of hot and mouth watering food was set before Glayron, eagerly inviting him to dig into its luscious flavor. "Eat up friend, we shall talk later. Discussions are much more enjoyable on a full stomach." The man patted his abdomen satisfactorily. The other men nodded in agreement.

Glayron was relieved at the sight of the food, and when he caught a wift of the warming smell of the plate set before him, he could only smile before graceously digging in, making sure to watch his manners in front of these men.

After a little while of eating Glayron finally spoke up, seeing his plate almost empty.  "I thank you sirs for this food, but one thing puzzles me.  What am I doing here?  The other men are outside eating, what have I done or what do you want of me?  I don't want to be ungrateful, but I just arrived here and this all seems a little strange."

The man beside him chuckled, "All will be answered and explained in due time my boy. By the way, the name is Block, Philip Block" The man swiped his mouth roughly with a piece of cloth and stuck out his hand to Glayron.

"Why are you here? Well, you are not a regular here, thus we felt you would be most comfortable away from the boys. They can be a little...disagreeable at times." He eyed a man on his other side. "Old man George here told me that he thought it would be best to have you with us, at least for the meal."

Old man George nodded knowingly, "I have heard something going around camp that...well...you would be safer with us for the time being." He knew this would create questions but he remained silent on the matter.

Glayron listened carefully to the two men.  Was his well being here threatened?  He hadn't noticed anything, but it seemed this man called George had heard something and requested that Glayron ate with them tonight.

"What are these rumors if you don't mind me askin.  Have I done something to earn the men hatred?"

Glayron wasn't fearful, just curious of what was being planned.  He would like to know in advance so he would be able to prepare better, maybe even avoid it altogether.

IC: "What are these rumors if you don't mind me askin. Have I done something to earn the men hatred?"

Philip chuckled, "No hatred, just suspicion...men are a little wary about newcomers, especially ones that are a little...different than their normal. Catch my reasoning?" He took a mouthful of his drink. "It's just that the men haven't really seen or met...an Eyelian..." His voice hushed and hoarse.

The man took a deep breath and let it out slowly, "I know you have lots of questions but...my eyelids are telling me it is time for some shut eye." The man stretched and firmly laid a hand on Glayron's shoulder. "Everything will seem clearer in the morning. I will answer any questions you might have after breakfast. Until then, Old Man George will show you your quarters."

Glayron nodded.  He hadn't sleep in a place sheltered from the weather for quite some time, having made his own sleeping quarters where ever he traveled.  A change would be well met.

"Then I will hopefully see you in the morning good sir," replied Glaynor.  He waited to be lead to his sleeping quarters, wondering how the sleep may be tonight.

Old man George led Glayron through a mass of tents to a lone cloth structure not too far from the others. Nodding to Glayron, he spoke, "You should get some good rest tonight ... you've worked hard along with the other men!" He gave Glayron a hearty slap on the back as he chuckled.

As he was about to leave, he suddenly scratched his chin and turned to Glayron again, "I heard some of the men say you were Eyelian, that right?"

The time for Fluffy and Cacunai's plot thread will now be 22 Bells.

Cacunai and Yerun kept well back in the shadows. Cacunai was not weary, though it was night and they had just walked quite a ways, because she walked all day every day. However she could not tell in the darkness if Yerun was having difficulties. Over the time it had taken them to get here, Cacunai had doled out small amounts of her provisions every now and then, so the boy would be strong and hale when they got into camp. Cacunai hadn't seen the rodents but once during the trek. The guards seemed to be concentrated in a small area of the camp, probably eating. Now, she turned and knelt before Yerun.

Well my boy, here we are. The forest is near, but the darkness is complete. What do you think we should do now? If we are to go into the camp, you must let me do the talking. Do you know any of these guards? Do they know you?

At the sound of Cacunai's voice Ramblers jumped out of Yerun's pockets. As Fuzzytail and Manymeals landed on the ground, Spaky sprang on them and all three fell on the ground making weird sounds. Even the boy couldn't guess they were laughing.

Manymeals tummy demanded a supper. Or a diner. He haven't had both. *Squrrl? Squqorl?* - he asked the others.
*Squrrl* - nodded Sparky.
"There, look", - Smuggles pointed with her hand at the camp: "We'll find something there".

"Hm, Yerun, you are going to this camp, aren't you?" - asked Fuzzytail.

@Cacunai & Fluffy:

((OOC: What a cute post Fluffy! hehehe ... You two make a great team *grin* Great transition post too Nai! :D  ))

Yerun's skinny frame was deceiving. He was as rugged and hearty as a skilled forest ranger, but he did appreciate Cacunai's provisions, although most of it were snuck into his jacket for the Ramblers. By the time they had arrived at the main encampment, night had fallen and the insects of the night had began their merry chorus all around them.

As Cacunai knelt down before him he peered curiously towards the blazing flames of the guards' campfires, "Well my boy, here we are. The forest is near, but the darkness is complete. What do you think we should do now? If we are to go into the camp, you must let me do the talking. Do you know any of these guards? Do they know you?"

At the mention of "talking", Yerun nodded profusely at Cacunai. Inside he was shouting to himself loudly, Yes, please! Do the talking! At the mention of knowing the guards, Yerun turned to shake his head repeatedly. More than anything, he was quite nervous. All the guards looked like they were ready to start a ferocious brawl any second. Secretly he felt the urge to cling to Cacunai and just hide behind her as they make their way into the camp.

As the Ramblers leapt out of his jacket, Yerun bent down and hushed them protectively. He had grown close to all of them, and was wondering if guards caught rats in the woods and made soup and stew out of them like Omis did. He thought that he should not take the risk of the rats being discovered.

"Hm, Yerun, you are going to this camp, aren't you?"

Yerun glanced nervously around again as he spoked in a low tone to Fuzzytail on the ground, "We ... we should, i don't like the dark ... it might be ... dangerous ... and you tell the others to keep close to me now ... guards can be ... dangerous people ... i think."

So much for that then. You see, if any of the guards knew you to be the kitchen boy, we would have a ready-made excuse to be out here. As it is, I have a plan.

She stood and moved further into the shadows before pulling a few select articles out of her various bags and pouches and pockets, one of them a little skin flask that contained a dye made from cedar bark. Working quickly, she poured a small amount into her hand and worked it into the silver stripe at her temple.

No use showing them my one distinctive feature, eh boy?

(She muttered as she quickly wiped her hand on the damp grass.) Now the silver was muted enough so that in the darkness, or even in firelight, it would be invisible. She then unwound her swordbelt from her waist and stuffed it into the largest pack she carried. All other weapons except her blowpipe were secreted away, her blowpipe taking up residence in the loop-and-hook at her wrist. It was designed so with a flick of her middle finger, she could spin it around to point at an adversary - and it was always loaded.

She then retrieved a flask that looked identical to the other, except to her practiced eye, and uncorked it. This one contained only a few small beads, which she looped into a narrow braid that resided behind her ear. Other bottles that contained powders and a couple of liquids whipped in and out of her pockets, and the finishing touch was a long, hooded cloak with a gaily-patterned fringe that she drew out of the haversack she carried.

There.

Cacunai smiled and raised her face to the boy. The whole process had taken only a minute or two.

Now I am Jalil'sadei, elf of the traveling harlequin. But you know, I was seperated from my troop oh-so-long ago.

Indeed, these subtle changes were applied in such a way that she was almost unrecognizable.

And you are Arkantos, the urchin I picked up off the street. You are my stage boy.

Her grin widened. Soldiers tended to treat hard-luck-gone-by women very kindly, especially if they traveled with children. Mouths to feed, you know. At least that was Cacunai's experience.

"We ... we should, i don't like the dark ... it might be ... dangerous ... and you tell the others to keep close to me now ... guards can be ... dangerous people ... i think."

"All big people can be dangerous people", - thought all the Ramblers. "Don't worry, Yerun", - said Fuzzytail to the boy: "Rats are hard to see in the dark".

As the elven woman changed her appearance, Ramblers remained untouched by the show. They have seen lots of ma-gick tricks back in Ximax. "Your ma-gick won't fool anyone", - declared Fuzzytail with a face expression that could be called a grin: "You still smell the same!"

@Cacunai & Fluffy:

((OOC: LOL Fluffy!!))

Yerun watched in amazement as Cacunai underwent her "transformation". Even in the darkness of the night, Yerun gaped as Cacunai took on a different persona. He tried to remember the name "Arkantos" ... not that he could ever say it out anyway. He wondered what an urchin was ... definitely not something to eat, he deduced.

Yerun slightly chuckled inside at Fuzzytail's comments. He wondered what an elf smelled like, and he also hoped that Fuzzytail was right, that rats really were hard to see in the dark. Still, he bent down and scooped all the Ramblers one by one into his jacket. He didn't want to have a hard time keeping track of where each one was, and he was sure that Cacunai wouldn't want him to be craning his neck looking out for them here and there when she approached the guards at the camp. He whispered towards the inside of his jacket pocket, "Stay quiet now ... i think we are going to go into the camp with the elf lady. I will get you all something to eat soon."

Ah, but the guards can't smell as well as you, eh my little friend?

Cacunai grinned. She did so love conspiracy!

Anyway, they've never smelled me before. At least, not to my knowledge.

She stood and started to move out from her cloak of darkness, fastening her actual cloak with a small green gem that glowed dimly.

By the way, Jalil'sadei is the singer,

she turned and told the boy and his rodents. She then strode boldly into the firelight, swirling her cloak artfully to create a cover for "Arkantos" to scurry behind her and to create intricately-patterned shadows flicking across her face, illuminating her eyes, which burned brightly.

Sirs, have you a crust to spare for one who is weary?

She called out to the guards, pasting an expression of hunger and exhaustion across her face. Acting was quite a talent of this elf's.

@Cacunai & Fluffy:

Rolalf, a lieutanent at the main encampment, was chewing on a piece of roasted mutton leg with the other guards at a campfire, when suddenly a feminine voice which sounded quite despaired sounded out from the darkness, "Sirs, have you a crust to spare for one who is weary?"

The other guards looked up towards where Cacunai's voice had sounded out from. Rolalf rose from his seat, and walked towards the darkness, and he fainly made out Cacunai's slim figure and the hungry, exhausted expression on her face. Squinting a little harder, he noticed a young boy cringing nervously behind Cacunai.

"Well there, miss, what are you and --" he glanced at Yerun and didn't know what to call him, "-- this boy here doing at this hour of the day? The woods ain't no place for women and children, you know."

We are lost, and we have nowhere to go tonight. We are too poor to seek shelter in the town, and anyway my stage boy here cannot abide crowds.

Cacunai, or rather Jalil'sadei, tipped her head to one side and blinked as if blinded by the light. She kept moving forward, though almost imperceptably, her cloak edge brushing the damp grass. She prayed to Elath ((her goddess)) for the rats  to stay hidden. She really hated doing the whole AIEEEEEEEEE GET ME A CHAIR IT'S A MOUSE routine.

"We are lost, and we have nowhere to go tonight. We are too poor to seek shelter in the town, and anyway my stage boy here cannot abide crowds."

Rolalf took a closer look at Cacunai as she stepped towards the light of the campfires. She did really look al wretched and like she had been starving for days. Grunting in sympathy, Rolalf waved his hand and beckoned for Cacunai to enter into the encampment area, with Yerun nervously trailing behind her.

As Yerun passed Rolalf by, Rolalf thought he saw moving bulges from within the boy's jacket. Narrowing his eyes, he hailed the boy, "Hey, boy! What's that you got with you inside your jacket?"

@Kiushapo & Mina:

((OOC: All of you have just arrived near the main encampment with Elric, and you can't quite make out Cacunai, Rolalf and Yerun's figure yet without getting closer to the encampment site.))

Elric stopped abruptly as they reached the perimeter of the main encampment site. He had been bumping into and tripping over branches, pebbles and tufts of bush all along the way, and he rubbed his various bruises tenderly. Turning towards Mina & Kiushapo, Elric spoke, "Well, this isn't where i was planning to be --" Elric threw what looked like a disgusting look towards the main camp area. " -- but the hour is not getting any earlier, and we should rest and gather ourselves. We should be able to make good time to arrive at Lieutanant Dorrum's outpost tomorrow if we start out early in the morning. So, we stop here for the night, alright?"

"Hey, boy! What's that you got with you inside your jacket?"

Fuzzytail perched out of Yerun's pocket before the boy could answer: "Boo! I am the mighty spirit of the woods! And what I'm doing inside this jacket is not of your concern. But take my advice, stop drinking during your watch. Wine makes you see things that others do not see. Now off with you! By the way, I don't recommend you to tell about talking mice to your friends", - with this words he sprang on the ground and disappeared into the dark.

@Fluffy & Cacunai:

((OOC: :lol  :rollin  Fluffy, what a totally cute and funny post!!!))

Yerun went as pale as a ghost as Fuzzytail poked out of his jacket. He already felt like someone had thumped him hard on the head when the guard hailed him, and he couldn't believe what Fuzzytail declared loudly, "Boo! I am the mighty spirit of the woods! And what I'm doing inside this jacket is not of your concern. But take my advice, stop drinking during your watch. Wine makes you see things that others do not see. Now off with you! By the way, I don't recommend you to tell about talking mice to your friends"

Rolalf was stunned. It all happened in a flash too, that weird squeaky scratchy voice that came from within the boy's jacket somewhere speaking the Tharian tongue, with the little blurb of something that had popped out of the boy's pocket and then leapt into the darkness again. Rolalf shook his head hard and rubbed his eyes even harder. What did he just see? What did he just hear??What the??? And what was this about talking mice???

Looking around him warily, wondering about wood spirits and the like, Rolalf decided that he had had a hard day, and it was all in his head. Besides, nothing seemed to be bulging or moving within the boy's jacket anymore at a second glance, so he waved Cacunai and Yerun forward, as he scanned his surroundings again for wood spirits and disembodied voices and such.

As Cacunai stepped into the light of the campfires, she came upon one that had about four men sitting in a circle, each munching hungrily at pieces of roasted meat. None of them seem to notice the approaching elf lady and the young boy, and Rolalf was just making his way back behind them.

As Fluffy popped out of the jacket, Cacunai barely stopped herself from burying her face in her hands. However when he made his little speech and the guard's eyes widened, her difficulty turned to having to keep her laughter inaudible. Still snickering, she led "Arkantos" over to one of the campfires; it had four men seated around it. She stood silently for a moment, considering what to do now, then stepped forward and said softly,

Pardon me, sirs, have you a crust to spare for one who is weary?

Too late she realized she had used the same phrase that she had used with Rolalf. But he wasn't there, so it should be all right.... She awaited the mens' answer with the classic pose of interest - one hand up by her face with fingers cocked, waist slightly tilted, head cocked the opposite way - and remembered the first time she had tried doing this pose. She had exaggerated it to the point of ridiculousness and had not gotten her answers... but that was many years ago, and she had improved considerably. Subtlety was the name of the game.

@Fluffy & Cacunai:

Yerun approached timidly but hungrily towards the four men and their campfire along with Cacunai. The aroma of roasted meat made Yerun's mouth water.

"Pardon me, sirs, have you a crust to spare for one who is weary?"

Two of the men looked up towards Cacunai while the other two continued chomping away at the big cuts of meat they held in their hands. One men grunted, and he cocked his head sideways to see Rolalf walking back towards them, waving to indicate that everything was ok. The men grunted again, and then turned back towards Cacunai, patting on a stump besides him, his bushy dark beard glistening in the light of the fire.

"Take a seat now, miss. And your boy too. This is no place for a woman and child to be at this hour ..." he handed both Cacunai and Yerun some dry bread as another man stood up to possibly get more meat. As Rolalf made his way back, the guard with the beard spoke up again, "So, where are you and your boy there heading too and where are you from?"

Thank you, your kindness is appreciated.

Cacunai nodded gratefully and seated herself daintily on the stump, gesturing for Yerun to find a place to sit. She gnawed on the dry bread, thankful she had strong teeth (XD).

Oh, thither and yon you know, thither and yon. I am Jalil'sadei of the traveling harlequin, but I was seperated from my troop many years ago. I picked up Arkantos, here,

quite recently. Now we're on our way into the forest to try to gather a few select herbs. I need them for a dye I am making; my cloak is in need only of a certain color, and it will be complete. The fabric is a special type, you see, and repels most dyes.

Let them think me a talkative simpleton. They will accept my word more readily, she thought. The roasting meat smelled delightful, and her stomach growled of its own accord.

As in the city, Kiushapo made sure to walk on the opposite side of the path from Elric. He admired the boys enthusiasm, but he really needed to watch where he was going.

As the camp came into view, Kiushapo suspected Elric needed the rest he was suggesting more than he himself did. He was still ready to walk through the night if that's what it took, but he wasn't sure about Mina. "Rest is sounding good Elric, lead on. The wind blew from the north bringing the scent of Fuzzytail with it and the Ramblers knew he was near.

((OOC: That's ok Fluffy! Get some sleep now >D ))

As one of the four guards returned with two more cuts of meat, handing one each to Cacunai and Yerun, Rolalf had also made his way to the campfire, and had taken up a seat on the other side of the bearded guard, and had caught most of what Cacunai had said. Biting in his half-eaten piece of meat, Rolalf spoke with his mouth full, "Going into the forest, Miss?? Don't you know where you are, Miss?? Tis the Shivering Woods, no place even for men like us, much less --" he tried to remember what Cacunai had called herself, "-- a travelling harlequin and a scruffy young boy!" He picked up one of the metal cups on the ground and downed its contents thirstily. "Nay, we shall give you shelter tonight, and you and your boy better be on your way first thing tomorrow morning ... if you want herbs, you don't want it from these woods here, believe me."

Yerun listented nervously to what Rolalf had said. He knew that there was something really bad in the woods. Somehow he knew. But he didn't know exactly what, or he couldn't remember. As he bit into the tough roasted cut of meat, he looked imploringly towards Cacunai, hoping she would ask about Kestrel. The Ramblers had scrambled out from his jacket, and he had no idea where they had ran off to. He wished Fuzzytail was there right now ... he didn't someone to do the talking for him.

"Thank you sir, for warning us, I had no idea! But sir, someone named... Kestrel, I think it was, told us the herb I wanted would be found in there. Do you know anything about Kestrel?"

The bearded guard spat a piece of bone fragment to the ground as he grunted to Cacunai, "Kestrel?? Are you sure you were talking to Kestrel? Must be a different Kestrel. The Kestrel everyone here knows is totally crazy. Lives by herself at the edge of the woods. Funny thing is, she used to be a herb lady too." He continued munching on his meat.

Rolalf nodded at Cacunai, "Jerome there is right. Whoever told you about whatever herb you are looking for must be as mad as our Kestrel as well. Whatever the reason, you don't want to be going into the woods or near any mad woman. If you tell us where you are going, we can point you the right way the next morning."

Yerun had a worried look on his face. Kestrel, crazy??? That can't be good. He wondered if Cacunai would continue asking ... he looked around frantically for Fuzzytail, hoping to spot the little mouse scrambling around in the dark.

Really! She seemed quite sane when we were speaking to her... well, I suppose you're right; it was probably some other Kestrel. As for your proposition, I'm afraid we had no plan. We simply wander, occasionally performing. But oh, I must have that herb! It is the only one I know of that produces the distinct violet I am looking for. Sir,

She perked up suddenly as if she'd had an idea, and looked hopefully at the guard.

could you take us to Kestrel? If she was a herbarist too, at one time, she may know another that produces the same effect. I think I'll be able to defend Arkantos, and myself, if she goes insane while we're there,

A hint of a smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. in all actuality, she could probably wipe out Kestrel before she spoke two words. Not that she would, of course.

Mina and Kiushapo followed Elric to an encampment of some sort.  I wonder where we are.  This does not look like a mere outpost.

At the perimeter, Elric turned around and confirmed that they were indeed not at the outpost.  Apparently the outpost was still some distance away, and Elric had decided to stop by the encampment for a rest first, before setting out again the next morning.

"Rest is sounding good Elric, lead on. And while we are walking, perhaps you could be telling us a little more about this Lieutanant Dorrum."

"Yes," Mina agreed, "I think we should get some rest too.  But where exactly are we?"

Slowly and silently wandering through the dark, Ramblers looked for something tasty to eat. The air smelled of meat and old bread, but there had to be something else. Leaving the campfire behind, the rats followed the guard who was about to bring some cuts of meat to Yerun and Cacunai.

The man entered a small shack and Ramblers waited until he returns. Then, unnoticed by the guard with the cuts in his hands, they sneaked inside. Hurrah! Everything their heart (or better said, their belly) desired seemed to be there: fruits, vegetables, even cookies! And in the corner there was Fuzzytail sitting on the edge of an open barrel and drinking the strange dark-red liquid that was inside.

*Hiccup!* *Squaaaafeee! Squoooola!* - said the mouse swinging.

@Mina & Kiushapo:

"Rest is sounding good Elric, lead on. And while we are walking, perhaps you could be telling us a little more about this Lieutanant Dorrum."

"Yes, I think we should get some rest too. But where exactly are we?"

Elric nodded towards Kiushapo and then Mina, "Ah, Milady Mina, we are at the perimeter of the main encampment, the closest camp to the village. I don't really want to stop here, myself," he shrugged uncomfortably, "It's Captain Gavrin's outpost ..." a few more words that he muttered disappeared under his breath, then he cleared his throat and spoke again, "But the hour grows late, it's not safe travelling around the woods, let us make our way to the camp and ask for shelter for the night. We'll head out to Lieutanent Dorrum's outpost first thing in the morning!"

And so the three of them made their way to the glowing sight of the campfires as they trudged through the brush. Elric spoke along the way, "Well Kiushapo, my friend, Lieutanent Dorrum is a man most deserving of honour and respect! He would actually have easily made the rank of Captain by now, if not for the muddled imbeciles of the royal family," Elric greeted his teeth. He saw no need to hide his detest for the royal family ... for some reason. "They were going to chop his head off, those ... pompous morons! And now the Lieutanent mourns for the Princess, at his outpost unfailingly for seven years now, for if it was not for the sweet Princess' intervention, the Lieutanent would have tread on Queprur's path long before now, although who's to say that Queprur's embrace is much more comforting than the insult of being a lowly Lieutanent, for a man of his calibre. The lieutanent would do anything for the safe return of the Princess."

It was then they had arrive at one of the campfires, one that was nearest to the perimeter. Around it sat five guards, a wretched looking elven lady (Cacunai) and a nervous looking young boy (Yerun). They seemed to be having a conversation of sorts.

Elric turned to Kiushapo and Mina, "My friends, just go ahead and approach them, they will not deny you food and shelter. I must make my presence known to ... the Captain. But i shall return shortly." With a frown on his face, he strode off in another direction, but not before stumbling spectacularly over a piece of rotting log.

"could you take us to Kestrel? If she was a herbarist too, at one time, she may know another that produces the same effect. I think I'll be able to defend Arkantos, and myself, if she goes insane while we're there ..."

Rolalf laughed heartily at Cacunai's suggestion, almost choking on his half finished meat, "And what do you think you are going to get out of her, little lady? She's as crazy as a ... as a ..." Being a guard, Rolalf wasn't that good with words, " ... well, you get the idea! Kestrel is just crazy. She's harmless, probably, but you won't be getting any information out of her, that's for sure." He chuckled disbelievingly at Cacunai's request as he downed another mug of liquid.

Meanwhile, at the food supplies shack, the Ramblers were getting their jollies ransacking the place of the food, the guard that had went in and out was totally oblivious of the little Rambler carnival that was taking place as he shut the door behind him.

As Fuzzytail swaggered from side to side from the effects of the delicious thick red liquid, a scritching and scratchy noise could be heard. Moments later, four dark hunched figures emerged out of the shadows of the shack. It was four huge rats, their red eyes gleaming in the dark, baring their sharp menacing teeth at the new comers who were the Ramblers. It was their territory and they weren't pleased at the new arrivals. The biggest rat of the four, seemingly the leader of the gang, spoke up harshly towards Fuzzytail perched high on the barrel in rat-speak, "You! Mouse! What do you and your friends think you are doing here??!!"

Back at the campfire, Rolalf recovered from his little laughing bout, and turned towards Cacunai and Yerun again, "You two just eat your fill, and then we'll show you to the tents where you can get a good night's rest, and tomorrow we'll see you safely away from the woods --" at that moment he cocked his head a little as he saw Mina and Kiushapo's approaching figures, "Ah, more company!"

The leader of the gang of four big rats was huge, by rat standards. He was almost four times as large as Sparky was ... Ava only knows what was in that food supplies shack that had fed its growth to such a horrendous size.

The leader squirked in what seemed to be a wicked chuckle ... and the rest of his gang mimicked. Puffing their furs up and raising their tails, the four rats inched closer to Sparky, the leader speaking out again, in menacing rat-speak, a sort of strange rat-gangland dialect, which was made out by Sparky as "This here our turf, get you and your friends out here before we make all of you our supperrrrrrrrrr!"

Right after the leader finished speaking, one of the the other rats lunged out, and proceeded to pounce on Sparky, claws flailing in the air.

((OOC: Aha! But Mina, nothing can match the power of *dum dum dum!* THE FISH OF DOOM!!! Right Nai? Errr ...Nai? Nai? Nai, wake up and defend your weapon of choice here :b  ))

After giving the young guard instructions, Rolalf turned his attention back to the two newcomers.

"Good evening. My name is Mina Aylwin. We were following a guard named Elric to one of the outposts, but it was getting late and we decided to rest here for the night before setting out again the next morning. I hope that is alright."

Rolalf raised an eyebrow at the mention of Elric, but smiled pleasantly at Mina, "Of course, of course! If it wasn't for frequent ... visitors, life around the woods would be indeed dull and dreadful! Sit, sit, i will have my men bring some more food, and then i will show you all --" he made a sweep of his arms towards the four of them -- Mina, Kiushapo, Cacunai and Yerun -- " --to tents where you can rest for the night."

At this point, anyone can post again if they want to. I'm going to see Fluffy's next post, and then wrap/pace things up accordingly to fast forward the plot time to the next morning :)

Cacunai gave a slight nod to each of the newcomers but kept her gaze downcast. Cold indifference radiated from her stiffened posture, and it was not an act, not this time. This time she was angry at the guards who resisted her every tried-and-true method of coersion. She turned and bent to whisper softly in Yerun's ear, so that no one else could hear,

Well my boy, I have no more tricks to pull out of the hat. We will depart at dawn or before, and you had better find your rats before then. If the guard will not help us, we will brave Kestrel alone.

She straightened and with a deft movement, produced a tiny, but very sharp knife from her pocket. She began to chip at the bone from the meat, pleased that it was not that kind that splintered. She sat silently, whittling away.

@Cacunai:

Yerun looked curiously at the two newcomers. They looked friendly enough. The lady elf then bent towards him and whispered softly, "Well my boy, I have no more tricks to pull out of the hat. We will depart at dawn or before, and you had better find your rats before then. If the guard will not help us, we will brave Kestrel alone."

Yerun nodded in understanding. He could see Cacunai's clear displeasure at the guards on her face. He decided he better just agree with whatever she said, so as not to get her displeasure directed at himself. As Cacunai mentioned the Ramblers, Yerun began to look around for them. He wondered where they could have wandered to. Yerun was holding on to a few bits of meat that he wanted to give to the Ramblers. Oh well, he was sure that they would return in time when they leave.

*Squuuuuugle!*
With a wild scream Fuzzytail jumped into the middle of the big rats from the barrel and started to spin around dealing punches at random. To his luck, Sparky had time to draw himself back, else the drunken mouse would hit him as well. "Take this! And this! And this! Hiccup!" - Fuzzytail seemed to be unstoppable.

Sparky took a big carrot out of an open sack, swung it and hit the rat leader at the head. The carrot smashed to pieces. Then he threw what was left in his hand in direction of one of the smaller rats and with a wide ratty grin kicked the leader in the groin.

The rest of the Ramblers hurried to help Sparky and Fuzzytail. Teapot sprang on the back of one of the rival rats, biting its ears and shouting: "Where are your manners, young man! Stop fighting immediately!" Smuggles, Shurshing and Manymeals drove the other two into the corner where some crates and the wine barrel stood. Fuzzytail kept spinning, not noticing anything.

At the time when the two rats stood dangerously close to the barrel, Teapot bit the neck of her "steed", who hopped around trying to drop her off. *Sqoiiiiii!* - screamed the rat and ran to his friends in hope they would help him. Too late he realized that his friends weren't really of any help. Running too fast up the crates and unable to stop he bumped in the both and they fell all together into the barrel.

Meanwhile Sparky was dodging the blows from the huge leader. Four time smaller than his rival, with a broken tail and ribs, he was starting to fear that he indeed was going to become a supper. It would surely not end well for Sparky if the Ramblers who just dispatched the rest of the gang not dropped a bag full of potatoes on the already hurt head of the leader. This proved to be too much even for such a big rat, and he fell on the ground losing his consciousness.

@Cacunai, Mina & Kiushapo:

Not much conversation followed thereafter. Meat, bread and water were handed out by the guards to the "guests". The young guard soon returned with a scrawny ball of thread and some coarse needles for Kiushapo. Rolalf made small conversation and some unjokely jokes, and shortly Elric returned.

"Elric! Good to see you around again! Come, come, have some good meat by the fire and join the conversation!" said Rolalf to Elric in his usual gregarious way. Elric merely smiled, and joined the circle of people around the campfire, and spoke aloud, to no one in particular, "Captain Gavrin would probably like to greet the guests here in the morning before they go on their way ..."

Soon, Mina, Kiushapo, Cacunai and Yerun were led to a few makeshift tents away from the campfires that had been set up for them for the night. Yerun peered around curiously, at the same time wondering where the Ramblers could have gone to ... oh well, he would just have to wait for them to make their way back to him themselves.

Right, all of your next posts will be of the time of 8 bells the next morning. Just post to say that you woke up, and indicate your plans for the day ahead in your post. To wait for an NPC to approach you, just state that you remain in your tent. To seek out an NPC or a particular NPC yourself, state in the post who you are looking for and state that you make your way to the site of the campfire the previous night.

The time for your plot thread will now be 23 Bells.

@Eve:

((OOC: Right now Helli and Eve is still a fair distance from the actual site of the Main Encampment, so since Eve is not a local, she will not know that the Main Encampment is just a short distance away, and both Helli and Eve will not be able to see any campfires or guards in their immediate area))

Helli and Eve trudged on for hours, with Helli leading the way towards the main encampment. By the time that they were just a short distance away from the encampment site, the day had already grown dark, and the sounds of the creatures of the night filled the air. In Helli's basket was a small lamp with a candle, and she took that out and lit it up to light the way forward when it became too dark.

Along the way Helli chattered on to Eve about cooking, dirty sons who don't bathe, her good friend Jothia and the usual village gossip. Not much caught Eve's interest, as it was mostly small talk opinionated rumours.

Helli chattered on, seemingly never running out of things to say about something or someone, and not really minding that Eve mostly just listened or nodded, and didn't add much to the conversation, "And there was that time when Jothia, that sly goat, she --"

Suddenly, a cry of pain came from Helli, and the little lamp in her hand and her basket fell to the ground as she fell forward face down. The flame of the candle in the lamp flickered weakly, about to go off any moment if no one picked it up and set it upright real soon.

Old Man George chuckled good naturedly, "Nay, never met one ... until now of course, only head stories about them -- i mean, your people talking to animals and all that."

Old Man George proceeded to clear his throat, "Well, since you are Eyelian, perhaps you might want to join the scouting party the Captain is sending out tomorrow morning? Strange things have been happening around the woods and camp of late, and they might find it handy to have someone around who can speak to animals and maybe question a critter or two."

Mina was meditating.  She had actually woken up a while ago, but decided not to get up just yet.  The tent wasn't as comfortable as the room in the tavern, but it was at least better than nothing.  In any case, it was still quite early, and, hearing no sound from the nearby tents, she assumed that the others were still asleep.  But she had gotten a little restless after just a few moments, and decided to meditate a little instead.  Besides, it's been too long since she last did that; she used to meditate regularly when she was in Ximax, but had only done so once in a while since she left.

Some time later, she opened her eyes again, feeling much more refreshed.  Maybe I should do this more often. Stepping out of the tent, she blinked a few times, trying to get used to the sunlight, then looked around for Elric and Kiushapo.  Seeing no sign of them, she made her way towards where the campfire was the previous night, wondering if they might already be waiting for her there.

@Fluffy & Cacunai:

"Hey, Big One, wake up!"

Yerun almost jumped out of his skin when he heard Shurshing say "Big One". He was writhing in his sleep, in the middle of dreaming that he was by the seaside, and suddenly, a HUGE fish leapt out of the water and lunged for him, flapping its huge mouth trying to swallow Yerun whole. Yerun in his dream ran and hid behind some rocks, thinking that he had outran the fish, only to be woken up by Shurshing thinking that the Big Fish was standing right over him, as he woke up in cold sweat and stared with beady eyes at Shurshing the "Big One".

"We all are safe and will be here soon. I mean, the rest will be here soon. We had some unexpected troubles with getting our supper. But everithing's o'k now!"

Quickyly regaining his senses, Yerun was relieved and happy to see Shurshing, and was glad that the others were going to come together soon.

"What happened? Is everyone ok? You wait here until the others get here, alright? Then tell them to all stay in my tent until i come back to get you all ... i'm going to get the lady elf, i think it's morning now, and we should get going ... i don't like this place."

Gesturing for Shurshing to stay and wait for the others again, Yerun stepped out of his tent, and carefully made his way to Cacunai's tent, which was just right next to his. Peering into the tent, he saw Cacunai's sleeping figure lying still.

Cacunai had stayed awake long into the night, whittling away at her bone. Only when she was certain all else was asleep in the camp, excluding the rats as they were probably nocturnal, did she add the finishing touch to her bone - leather wrapped around one end - and stow it in her cloak. Cacunai slept, but to an observer she would seem awake - the elf slept with her eyes open. Sometime during the night she had shifted so her back was to the tent flap, so when Yerun peered inside, he did not see her blank stare. The slight noise he made prompted her to come fully awake in a matter of seconds. She sat up abruptly and brought her dagger up in the same movement. The sight of Yerun calmed her enough to sheath the dagger and start pulling on her boots quickly.

I have allowed myself too much leisure. Come, we've got to get going before the guards start questioning us further or lead us kindly away from the woods. Here.

As soon as her feet were jammed into her boots, she snatched the bone from the pocket of her cloak and handed it to the boy. Overnight it had been transformed (by carving) into a rough dagger-knife type thing with a fox carved into the hilt. Leather formed a grip. She smiled grimly.

It will not last long. But you must have some protection. Use it well and wisely and it should be all right. Its name is "Qee'lak sadei". Means 'quick fox' in Drow, the language of the ones we may find in the forest. A very old dialect.

@Mina:

As Mina approached the campfire that she was at last night  -- which was now a patch of grey ashes -- there was Elric standing there, shuffling his feet about in the ashes, as if deep in thought about something.

He suddenly noticed Mina's presence. "Oh!" Said Elric, looking up towards Mina like a deer caught in carriage lights. "Ah, good morn Milady! I was just getting ready for the trip to Dorrum's outpost." He glanced around behind Mina, "And where may your companion, Kiushapo be? He didn't seem like one to be late to rise in the morning." He then glanced back at Mina, "Do you have weapons on you?"

@Cacunai & Fluffy:

((OOC: Coooool post Nai!! :thumbup ))

Yerun was taken aback and almost panicked when Cacunai suddenly sat up and drew a sharp gleaming dagger as if about to pounce on Yerun. Thankfully (for Yerun anyway), Cacunai returned the dagger to her sheath as fast as it was pulled out.

"I have allowed myself too much leisure. Come, we've got to get going before the guards start questioning us further or lead us kindly away from the woods. Here."

Yerun liked the idea of leaving. He didn't like the encampment. Too many burly men walking around with weapons ... especially sharp gleaming ones. When Cacunai handed him what looked like a sort of pointy bone like knife thingy, he almost dropped it in nervousness, and his hands shook as he tried to grasped it properly.

"It will not last long. But you must have some protection. Use it well and wisely and it should be all right. Its name is "Qee'lak sadei". Means 'quick fox' in Drow, the language of the ones we may find in the forest. A very old dialect."

Yerun nodded timidly, hoping that he would never had to use it ... afterall, was she expecting for them to run into danger?? He hoped not. He carefully slipped the bone dagger into the folds of his jacket -- had better tell the Ramblers about it in case one of them sat on it and got a mighty ache -- and then gestured to Cacunai towards his tent. He needed to pick up the Ramblers first. He hope they had already gathered and was waiting for them.

Cacunai spared a short laugh for Yerun's petrified expression when she handed him the dirk (which is what we shall now call it because I just realized that's what it is!).

It won't hurt you as long as you keep it hilt-up, and try to avoid letting it saw through your pocket - I would've made you a sheath but I didn't have enough leather.

She narrowed her eyes for a moment, watching Yerun gesture.

Ah, you want to go to your tent? All right, but we must move quietly. If any guards are still asleep at this horrid hour, we don't want to go waking them up.

Evelaria listened silently to Helli's gossip, nodding or saying "umhum," every once in a while. When Helli cried out Eve's eyes widened and she quickly looked around to see if anyone was near by, her keen eyes caught sight of nothing, but she did catch sight of the candle falling swiftly. She bent down and picked it up with her palms and then stood it upright. It all seemed to happen in slow motion because as soon as Eve picked up the candle Helli began to fall. Eve moved swiftly from the candle, her small size allowing her swift movement, and she caught the old woman by her waist, and then turned her over onto her back and kneeled down to the floor, feeling Helli's weight pulling her down.

Eve looked around now not looking for a threat but for someone to help. She saw no one, but heard the continuous cries of the night animals. "Helli....are you...alright?" she then realized that the question was kind of retorhical. The woman had just fallen on her face and was crying out in pain of course she wasn't alright. "What happened?" asked Eve as she fanned Helli with bare hand.

@Fluffy & Cacunai:

((OOC: Dirk? Ooohh ... new vocabulary for me :wink2  And you should be thinking about "getting" directions to where you want to go Nai ... or you can leave it to Yerun ... just a quick note about that hehe ;) ))

Yerun felt his cheeks warming with embaressment as Cacunai laughed. He wondered what he was doing wrong.

"It won't hurt you as long as you keep it hilt-up, and try to avoid letting it saw through your pocket - I would've made you a sheath but I didn't have enough leather."

Yerun wondered which part was the "hilt" part. Hearing the word "sawing" made him even more nervous than ever. Unsure of what to do, he made sure that the dirk sat nicely within his jacket, and that he felt no discomfort from it, hoping that he was doing something right.

"Ah, you want to go to your tent? All right, but we must move quietly. If any guards are still asleep at this horrid hour, we don't want to go waking them up."

Yerun nodded vigorously. Can't leave the Ramblers behind! They were like ... family now! Now "quietly" he understood. "Quietly" was not a problem. Afterall, his tent was right next door, he didn't plan on stomping loudly in two huge steps just to get to his tent.

Silently, Yerun and Cacunai slipped to the tent where Yerun had spent the night. Peering into the tent in his, Yerun directed his glance at the spot where he had last seen Shurshing, hoping that they had all gathered by now.

@Eve:

((OOC: Just checking to make sure that you didn't pull Helli back up standing again in your post, right? If i read wrong, post an OOC line in your next post and i'll edit this post accordingly :) ))

Thankfully Eve had managed to stand the the little lamp and candle within it upright again before the flame flickered out. That would have been bad, since it was their only light source in the pitch darkness of the surrounding woods area.

There was indeed no one around. Eve's keen sight served her well, even in the thick cloak of darkness around them. "Helli....are you...alright? What happened?" Helli moaned a little as she sat upright again with Eve's hands at her waist. "I ... i tripped on something i think ... my ankle ..."

Helli shifted one foot in pain. It seemed like she had sprained her ankle. "It ... it hurts ... oh dear ... i'm so sorry my dear ... careless me ..." Helli struggled to get back on her feet again, clutching on to Eve's strong hands.

At that very moment, something zipped past in the air above Helli and Eve, narrowly missing the crown of Eve's head. As it fell and staked the ground close to both of them, Eve could make out that it was an arrow ... with a really sharp point too now embedded in the coarse soil.

Another zipped by in the air, and another, and another. All narrowly missing either Helli or Eve. It was obvious by now that someone was letting a slew of arrows rain down on the two of them, but Eve spot nothing in the cold darkness.

A squirrel scampered out of the surrounding woods areas. Hopping besides Helli and cocking his head up towards Eve, it spoke to Eve, somehow knowing that Eve could understand, "Run ... run ... to ... camp ... ahead ... run ..." Animals don't produce the same tone of urgency that humans do, but if the current situation wasn't urgent, it was hard to define another that was.

When Yerun entered his tent, all the Ramblers were already there. Except Fuzzytail, who could not be seen anywhere. "Let's go! Fast!" - squeaked Shurshing to the boy: "Dont worry about the guards!"

A loud noice came from the campfire and reached Yerun's and Cacunai's years. There, in front of the tired guards four rats were dancing polka and whistling. Among them swung Fuzzytail who sung a song he once has heard in a tavern with a thin voice: "Once there was a braaaaave reeeeider! Boooold reeeeeider! Hop-la-hop! On his horse! He travelled the world! Veeeeery brave reeeider!"

The repair to his vest has gone swiftly, and Kiushapo had been able to spend most of the night sleeping. As the sun peeked through the flap of his tent, he examined his handy work. It was a little crude, but it looked better than the ragged tear that had been there before. Slipping his vest back on, he crouched in the tent and folded up the blanket they had lent him, setting it neatly in the corner.

As he stepped out of the tent he stretched and ruffled his hair, letting it fall where it would. Wild hair was one thing, but bed head was not something to walk around with. As his gaze fell back from the sky, he noticed Mina headed back towards the campfires. He hoped she had rested as well as he had, they probably had a long walk ahead of them.

Breaking into a jog, he managed to catch her just as Elric finished speaking. Bowling slightly he smiled at them both "Good morning! I am hoping you were both sleeping well?"

@Fluffy & Cacunai:

((OOC: :lol  Fluffy!))

Yerun was delighted to see the Ramblers gathered inside his tent the way that he had instructed Shurshing to get them to do so. But wait ... there was only 5 (working in the tavern had taught him to count accurately, since he didn't like his ears being boxed that much). Where was Fuzzytail?

"Let's go! Fast!" - squeaked Shurshing to the boy: "Dont worry about the guards!"

Yerun was about to question Shurshing about Fuzzytail's whereabouts, when he heard the sqritchy tone of a familiar voice.

"Once there was a braaaaave reeeeider! Boooold reeeeeider! Hop-la-hop! On his horse! He travelled the world! Veeeeery brave reeeider!"

Immediately rushing out of the tent and turning towards where the voice was coming from, Yerun saw the oddest sight ever in his whole life. Four guards sitting around a campfire ring, gaping unblinkingly at what seemed to be four rats swaying in motion to Fuzzytail's tune. Yerun thought he was dreaming. He wondered how he was supposed to "extract" Fuzzytail from the guards ... Fuzzytail seemed to be enjoying himself a whole lot.

Yerun rushed back into the tent and scooped up the rest of the Ramblers, placing them carefully into his jacket pockets, bidding them to be careful of the sharp pointy thing he had inside -- especially to mind their tails not getting accidentally sliced off.

Yerun then looked at Cacunai with a "What now???!!!" look. He was probably going to get scolded by the elf lady for bringing along the Ramblers, he thought to himself.

@Mina & Kiushapo:

((OOC: Fluffy and Nai's campfire ring is closer to the tents, and quite a distance away from the campfire ring that you are both standing at with Elric right now, so you won't be noticing the little entertainment going on there ;) ))

Elric had but just spoken the last word of his last sentence, when there was Kiushapo, jogging briskly up towards both him and Mina. "Good morning! I am hoping you were both sleeping well?"

Elric nodded in response towards Kiushapo, "Ah, good morn, my friend! I was just asking Lady Mina about you!" He shuffled his feet on the ground and shrugged his shoulders, "And how could i have a pleasant slumber when My Love is in danger of being taken away by another?"

Elric shrugged again and abruptly changed the subject. "I was just asking Lady Mina if she is armed, and knows how to use a weapon. Where we are heading --"

Suddenly, a deep, smooth voice that oozed maleness resonated out from behind the trio. "Heading? Where to, Elric?"

A tall, well built man with broad shoulders in the garbed in the armour and insignia of the Royal Kyranian Guards stepped up towards the trio, his dirty blonde locks loosely around his shoulder. Deep blue eyes and sharp brows were complemented by well-chiselled facial features, and a faint stubble on his chin merely accentuated his handsome ruggedness. As he smiled at Mina and Kiushapo, it felt like he brought down gentle rays of the sun to shine upon them in a caressing manner along with his smile.

Elric shrugged again -- he seemed to be good at that, besides bumping into things -- and spoke to the handsome fellow that had just stepped up, "Just bringing two of my friends to pay Lieutanent Dorrum a visit, Captain, nothing too adventurous."

The man Elric addressed as "Captain" turned towards Mina, gently took her hand and gave her a quick peck on the back of her palm, "I believe we have not been introduced, Milady?" Then he turned towards Kiushapo, beaming, "And you, my fine Sir? How may i address you?"

OOC: Oh, by the way, a dirk is shorter than a rapier and longer than a sword. It's just a type of short sword. Trust me, I know weapons.

Cacunai stood frozen at the mouth of Yerun's tent. A smile of mirth twitched at the corner of her mouth but instead she turned to Yerun and spoke in a voice somewhere between scolding and amusement.

Well my lad, this is a pretty pickle, isn't it. I will not be able to convince the guards that they are drunk, guards never drink on duty. I think we'll have to claim the mouse as part of our harlequin and cart him off that way. So much for getting away unnoticed. But wait...

Her eyes narrowed in thought and she brought her long fingers to bear on her blowpipe, as she did when in deep thought. Her gaze wandered off to the distance. After a long moment, she turned back to Yerun and shook her head wearily.

No, boy, I can't think of anything better than shooting them all with toxic darts, using a toxin that will come to bear in several seconds, giving me time to shoot them all before they start keeling over. But that will have the place in an uproar. No... all right, how about this: I'll tell them something about why he can talk... make something up... and you run and collect your mouse. If I start running, follow me like the devil himself is chasing you. All right?

Without waiting for a reply, Cacunai strode out to where the guards were sitting staring at Fuzzytail. With an expression of annoyance pasted across her face, she strode out to the campfire, calling back over her shoulder,

Arkantos! Honestly boy, can't you keep the mouse in the cage? 'Tisn't that hard. Do you know how long it took me to train him?!

Yerun (to Fluffy: Khiera's letting me control him temporarily) scuttled around her and snatched Fuzzytail out of his drunken revelrie. Cacunai dispersed the rats with swift bats of her hand and flashed a winning smile to the guards, who were looking very confused indeed.

Well then, we'd best be off. Thank you for all your help, and I'm sure we'll be fine.

Turning, she began walking agonizingly slowly away from the woods, planning to double back as soon as they were out of sight. Yerun scurried behind her, clutching Fuzzytail through the fabric of his pocket.

@Glayron:

"I don't see any harm in aiding your captians men by joining a scouting party. Will I be awoken or shall I sleep lightly?"

Old man George smiled, "Ah, well then, have a restful night my friend. Someone will be by to wake you up, yes, but around these woods, it would be wise to sleep lightly as well." Old man George gave a cryptic wink, and then ambled off to leave Glayron for the night.

It was an uneventful night, though a little hot and humid, making for uncomfortable sleep. It wasn't too long before a guard peeked into Glayron's tent, trying to wake Glayron up with a tentative tone, "Sir? Sir? They say you were to join our scouting party? Sir?"

Just to streamline your plot thread with the others, Glayron will awake on the same morning as the others, and your current time will follow the current displayed time of 7 Bells.

Glayron stirred in his sleep, hearing words of a human speak within his mind.  Opening his eyes and letting a light yawn escape his opened mouth.  Sitting up Glaynor peered and the head the poke through the flaps of his tent.

"Yes, yes.  Just give me a moment to wake and I will be right with you."

Standing and fixing his cloths, what cloths he wears, he gives a good stretch and makes his way outside of the tent.

"Where shall we be going?  Shall you be needing anything for me to do?"

He looked about the area, hoping to see any signs of wildlife, but sadly he could only hear the chattering of the birds in the distance.

Eve watched Helli struggle in her hands and she sighed, feeling awfull as though she had done it. She was about to lift the woman up and carry her when an arrow zoomed by her head. Eve's free hand immediately moved towards her side and she glanced in the darkness, seeing nothing but her ears caught the distinct sound of an animal moving and from the distance Eve could tell it was a little animal by the pitch of it's voice. The thing turned out to be a squirrel and as more arrows flew past Eve turned to look at the squirrel and it spoke to her.

"Run ... run ... to ... camp ... ahead ... run ..."

"Camp!? How am I goin' to manage this?!" she shouted into the darkness as the squirrel scurried off. Eve looked down at Helli, and closed her eyes, hearing the arrows hit the ground and calculating the time it took between the arrows to hit the ground. She mumbled a silent prayer to Chaos, and the Mullog god seemed to fill her mind and arms with strenght. She had calculated just right and instantly jolted to her feet, taking Helli up in both arms as painlessly as she could. She stood while the archer or hunter or the enemy(s) was knotching their next bow and once again things seemed to slow down. She took off running towards the direction the squirrel had mentioned. "Ahead...," mumbled Eve to herself as the arrows once again began to wizz by.

She felt her arms began to slightly tire from carrying Helli, but it was nothing she couldn't deal with for a few more minutes. She continued to run as fast as she could into the darkness...

@Cacunai & Fluffy:

It was just your everyday morning and their dull old routine of patrolling the encampment perimeter for the four guards, who were all good pals and buddies. That was until they heard a voice say, "Hey! Here!" and something that sounded like "sqrickle sqrickle HIC!" when they were walking past a campfire ring near the tents.

As the four of them gazed down into the ashen campfire ring, the most unbelievable sight met their eyes -- four rats swaying around as if they were dancing ... and whistling even ... or a kind of whistley scritchy scratchy noise from their throats anyway. And then a mouse among them SANG.

The four guards stared at the rats slacked-jawed, trying to convince themselves that either they were asleep, or it was time to request leave for home where they had things like warm beds and sweethearts and homecooked food. They had heard that deprivation did weird things to people.

"Arkantos! Honestly boy, can't you keep the mouse in the cage? 'Tisn't that hard. Do you know how long it took me to train him?!"

And then it all just happened a little too fast. A young boy swooped in and scooped the shaky, still crooning mouse into his jacket, and the female elf that had approached them had bowled over the four "dancing rats" with a quick sweep of her hand. "Well then, we'd best be off. Thank you for all your help, and I'm sure we'll be fine."

Confusion was the word of the day for the four guards.

Yerun held carefully the part of the jacket where Fuzzytail's body was outlined against, hoping that he was covering Fuzzytail's mouth or wherever mice sang from. He was starting to admire Cacunai -- she always seemed to know what to do and how. Looking fearfully over his shoulder in case the guards had followed them, he turned towards Cacunai, his eyes gleaming full of hope, as he waited for Cacunai to lead him to Kestrel -- of course he assumed that Cacunai already knew where and how to get there. Cacunai was turning out to know everything, it seems ... to Yerun.

@Eve:

Helli started groaning in pain as she tried to shift the weight of her sprained ankle, and then started to shriek in fear as arrows zipped past their heads and staked the ground close to them with loud thuds.

"Oh dear! Oh! OH! What's happening?!" Helli didn't know what else to do besides panic.

From the corner of her eye she saw what seemed like a little squirrel scramble up towards Eve and squeak and sqritch at her in an odd manner, as if it was conversing with Eve or telling Eve something. As quickly as it had came, the squirrel scurried off immediately thereafter as Eve shouted after it, "Camp!? How am I goin' to manage this?!"

Helli was now confused AND frightened out of her wits. "What --" Before she knew it she was being lifted up by Eve, and then the surroundings became a blur as Eve started a desparate sprint ahead. The little lamp laid abandoned on the ground, Helli unable to reach for it before Eve took off. An arrowhead hit the lamp and the candle flame within it was immediately extinguished.

As Eve ran straight ahead further and further, light began to appear, and as Eve continued to move ahead, the light appeared closer and closer, until finally Eve could make out the outline of burly guards standing and sitting around campfires. Thankfully by now the arrows had seemingly mysteriously vanished ... or rather, the archers had vanished, whoever they were.

As Eve approached, arms now aching from Helli's weight, one of the guards shouted out towards another in surprise, "Hey! Look there! Isn't that ... Lornen's mother?? Whom that woman is carrying??"

Listen, mouse. Whether you had a plan or not, we all needed to get out of there without arousing suspicion. A drunk, dancing mouse is NOT the kind of thing that would achieve that. Four men, all having the same hallucination, is great cause for alarm especially in the military.

Cacunai spoke coldly without looking back over her shoulder. The moment they were able to duck out of sight behind a grove of trees, she spun and eyed the indignant mouse. He was drunk, it was clear.

What's your name, anyway? I can't keep calling you "mouse".

Cacunai's nature was to love children and animals and she could not hold her anger for long. Her voice softened as she asked his name. The mouse was drunk, he probably wasn't thinking clearly. And she couldn't just take over this little expedition. Though she knew Yerun expected her to take him to Kestrel, she did not know how she was going to get there. She knew that she wanted to approach the woods from the east, heading west. They would have to skirt the encampment, but something in the wind told her that heading west would show her what she was looking for. What Yerun wanted to see? That was a different story.

@Cacunai & Fluffy:

((OOC: LOL at you two!!! Ah ... making friends is good, very good hehehe ... be nice to each other now ... and make sure Fuzzytail doesn't get near any alcoholic liquid in the future ;) ))

Yerun was glad Cacunai was asking Fuzzytail for his name. He was beginning to get the feeling that Cacunai did not like the Ramblers much ... well, asking for a name was a good step forward, and hopefully they would all become good friends eventually.

Gently, Yerun scooped Fuzzytail and Shurshing out of his jacket pockets, and carefully handed them both to Cacunai with a smile. Yerun seem to detect some kind of ... affectionate tussling-dynamic going on between Fuzzytail and Shurshing, and he trusted Shurshing to keep Fuzzytail in line -- or upright anyway. Yerun spoke to Shurshing before she landed on Cacunai's palms along with Fuzzytail, "Make sure Fuzzytail behaves."

Hoping that Cacunai and Fuzzytail will "connect" somehow, Yerun proceeded to turn away to a thick row of bushes besides them, to have his own little "conversation".

Mina couldn't help blushing a little when the man whom Elric had just addressed as 'Captain' took her hand and kissed it.  He's a handsome one.  she thought Certainly much better looking than the boys back at the Academy.

"Good morning Milord," she said, "My name is Mina Aylwin.  You are Captain Gavrin, I suppose?"

While the captain spoke to Kiushapo, Mina turned to Elric and said, "Yes, I do have a weapon." She pulled her cloak back slightly, revealing the dagger she wore at her side, "Though I hope it will not be needed."

@Glayron:

"Yes, yes. Just give me a moment to wake and I will be right with you."

The guard nodded slightly, and retreated back out to wait for Glayron to get ready, tapping one foot on the ground a little impatiently. It wasn't too long before Glayron stepped out of the tent and stretched in the rays of the early morning sun.

"Where shall we be going? Shall you be needing anything for me to do?"

The guard pointed to a small group of men gathered right at the fringe of the encampment perimeter, "We'll join the men right there. From thereon, our scouting group will split up into two, one goes to their patrol route to the East around the woods, the other, to the West ... we should all be back around dusk and gather here again."

The guard looked curiously towards Glayron, this man who was rumoured to be able to speak to animals at will. "Do you ... have any preference where you would like to head, East or West? The Captain did not inform me which group you were to join."

Eve's eyes tried to become adjusted to the darkness, but they wouldn't. She couldn't see and she feared that any moment she would trip and fall with Helli in her arms. Suddenly a beacon of light filled the desolate area around her and Eve rejoiced as her body seemed to be filled with more energy and she sprinted to the camp as careful as she could.

"Hey! Look there! Isn't that ... Lornen's mother?? Whom that woman is carrying??"

Eve stopped and smiled at the soldiers, and placed Helli on the floor, keeping her standing by allow her to keep her balance on Eve's shoulder. "My name is Evelaria Magoo. We were attacked down the path by archers of some sort, and something told me just to run ahead."

@Cacunai & Fluffy:

While Cacunai and Fuzzytail were getting "acquainted", Yerun was having his own little conversation amidst a row of bushes near where they stood.

Poking his head and fingers into the dense leaves of a big spritzy bush, he found a family of beetles chewing contentedly on the leaves of the bush (much to the chagrin of the bush, of course), much like how cows would chew leisurely on a pasture. Then, he began his "questioning"... politely of course. Sort of like making polite breakfast conversation.

A short while later, Yerun had obtained the information -- he had directions to where Kestrel was. Returning back to Cacunai, he now thought about his new problem: Fuzzytail was drunk, and barely coherent, how was he to tell the directions to Cacunai?

Looking up hopefully towards Cacunai, Yerun made gestures of someone writing on a pad. He hoped that Cacunai had some crumpled rough pad or cloth or something. He had a few bits of dark chalk left, but nothing to write on.

What is so dangerous, you ask? Well, Fuzzytail, I can't know that, I've never been here. But I have seen these trees move... when a guard wanders close to the wood... the trees shift and speak to each other. Who knows what we may find?

Her attention was drawn to Yerun again when he began making exaggerated motions... writing it looked like, or drawing. Cacunai shrugged.

Though this Captain Gavrin seemed likable enough, moving in on another man's fiancé was something he generally frowned upon. He had to admit the man was handsome, but that didn't earn any points with him. Giving Gavrin a small smile, he bowed slightly at the waist "Kiushapo, I am being called Kiushapo. Sometimes I am being called Captain as well, but that is not being today."

His little bit of posturing done, he turned his attentions to Elric, giving Mina an odd little glance as she flashed her dagger. Speaking softly to Elric, he winked, "I am hoping we can be reaching this outpost of yours before the ending of this day...?"

@Eve:

As Eve reached the immediate camp area and carefully placed a shaken and shocked Helli down to the ground besides her, the guard cried out again, "By Ava! It really is Lornen's mother!"

A couple more guards standing around helped gently guide Helli to be seated nearby. The guard that had cried out turned towards Eve.

"My name is Evelaria Magoo. We were attacked down the path by archers of some sort, and something told me just to run ahead."

A hand rose to ruffle through the sandy brown hair of the guard, who looked quite young, with a puzzled expression on his face, "Archers you say? I don't believe we have any archers posted ... besides, why would anyone be attacking two women??"

The other guard who was by Helli's side calming her down turned towards Eve too, "Thank you ..." He nodded solemnly. The guards had saw what Eve did, and by Eve's words, if Eve had not carried Helli to the camp, Helli would probably not have survived the rain of arrows.

Helli looked frantically around her, still in shock, "My son? Where's my son? Lornen? Where is he??"

A guard next to her tried to soothe her, "Calm down Madam ... Lornen ... he ..." the guards looked from one to another uncomfortably, "Well, he hasn't returned yet from his patrol. We ... were all wondering ... but ... don't worry, i'm sure he shall be arriving any moment now, Madam." Helli's expression was unconvinced, as her glance darted around the camp area, expecting to see her son show up any minute.

The young guard spoke to Eve again, "Would you like water? Food? Is anyone wounded?"

Eve nodded in acceptance of the guards' gratitude. She looked at Helli, worried that something bad may have happened to her son. She didn't have a good feeling about it, and she was about to offer to go into the woods, when she heard the guard offering her food and water.

"You have food? If so I would like to pay you for allowing us to enter. I am a chef, and if I am allowed to brag I am a good one. I do not mind preparing something in return for your hospitality."

She then looked towards Helli. "She is hurting, I do not know exactly what is wrong, but I think it would be best if she were to rest."

@Mina & Kiushapo:

"Good morning Milord. My name is Mina Aylwin. You are Captain Gavrin, I suppose?"

"Ah, Milady Mina, yes, Gavrin is my name, and Captain is my title, you are correct." Gavrin smiled broadly. His eyes had a certain lively sparkle to them. Elric had a spirited demeanour to himself too, but compared with Gavrin, one would get the impression that Elric was a little "washed out" ... the same goes for any other man in Eresh for that matter. Gavrin easily stood out.

"Kiushapo, I am being called Kiushapo. Sometimes I am being called Captain as well, but that is not being today."

Gavrin smiled and nodded to Kiushapo as well, "Ah, it's not often we have guests from the Elvenkind ... you are a Captain in their ranks as well?" Gavrin would wait for Kiushapo's answer, but Mina had turn to speak to Elric, and Gavrin could not help but catch sight of Mina's dagger.

"These parts of the woods are not exactly the most hospitable place to be, it is wised to be armed and know the ways of defending one's self." As Kiushapo mentioned something about reaching an outpost before the end of the day, Gavrin interjected before Elric could respond, "If you start right now, you could all arrive a little after midday. I would spare you all some horses, but we need every one of them as supplies take far and long to reach here."

Elric held his head low down, and if you looked carefully you could tell that he was ... looking a little surly and sulky. "What the Captain said is right," He said the word "Captain" perhaps a little contentiously, but Gavrin seemingly didn't notice, or didn't care. "Therefore, we had better get started, my friends. Captain, excuse me, for we shall take your leave now." Elric motioned to Mina and Kiushapo to follow him if they are ready. "Come, we head South, then West."

Gavrin smiled and waved to the trio, "Be safe. And may we meet again."

Yerun's face fell. He stood where he was fixedly for while, and then started looking around. Finally, he picked up a sturdy looking branch from the ground with an odd pointed tip. Crouching down to the ground, he started to "write" with the branch on the ground, a patch where there was more dirt than grass.

After some effort, words appeared in the dirt in Yerun's scrawly handwriting:

Goe Sauwth. Dhen Wes. Dhen Sauth. Luuk IIII (Yerun forgot how to spell the word "for", so drew four lines to indicate the number 4, seeing that they both sounded the same anyway) hut (this was the single word he spelt right, though he didn't know it of course ... he was so sure it had an "o" in it, but he couldn't remember why so he wrote it with a "u" instead).

He looked up towards Cacunai again, a little tired from all that writing on the ground, his face was an expression that said something like, "Can we go now?"

Evelaria smiled and took the bread, meat and water from the guard. She didn't really feel like cooking anyhow, but her Mullog Nanny Stari, had always told her it was polite to offer working men a good meal. She looked to Helli as the other guard spoke.

"Okay," she said as the guards led her to her tent. She went inside the small area and finished eating her meal and drank some of her water and then put it off to the side. She pulled the small warm blanket over her body, leaving only her head and neck out and then she shot up in her bed, knowing that something bad was going on.

She looked up and closed her eyes. "Chaos, if this is your doing, spare this woman her grief. She already has a husband on the edge of sanity. And she has lost one son. Do not let the same befall the other."

She sighed and closed her eyes as she laid back down and went to sleep.

Evelaria soon woke up and stretched. Thankfully those archers hadn't returned during the night and killed her in her sleep. She stood up, bumping her head on the pole that held her tent up and grumbled to herself. Rubbing her head the warrior walked out of her tent. Not really looking for anyone, but she saw that many of the guards had already taken up their posts. She walked up to the gate where she was rescued last night and was looking for one of the guards she had seen last night.

@ Glayron

The guard’s back straightened at Glayron’s comments about preferring the woods. ”No one is allowed under the woods under ANY circumstances. Captain’s orders. I hope we‘re clear” His voice made it clear that he every intention of making sure that order was followed. Gruffly he added, ”You’ll be going in the group that goes west.” With that, the guard turned and walked away.

One of the other guards seemed to be regarding Glayron with a look of confusion. Finally he said, ”Ummm. So about your…” The guard paused as if looking for the right words. “Your magic. Do you need any special… materials, or, umm,  rituals when you talk to the animals?”

@ Eve

As Eve walked, she saw a group of guards headed towards the gate and recognized one from the night before. Apparently, he recognized her as well because upon seeing her, the guard motioned to someone, pointed in Eve’s direction and started towards her.

”Ma’am.” the guard said with a polite bow, ”I hope you remember me from last night. This is Captain Garvin. He has some questions for you,” he said with a gesture to another member of the group that was coming over. Eve got a look at the approaching officer and saw how devastatingly good looking he was. Tall, with broad shoulders and a flat stomach, he looked to be hard as a rock and solid muscle. His blond hair and blue eyes were set against the bronzed skin that came from days spent outdoors.

The handsome captain smiled at Eve. ”I understand you had a little excitement with some archers last night. I was hoping you could give me some details about what happened last night. It’d be very helpful.”

The conversation was interrupted with sobs as Helli was approaching in hysterics crying. ”My son…. My son… Where is he?… Why isn’t he back yet?… My poor boy… where is my son?”

Eve smiled when the guard approached her and bowed in return.

”Ma’am.” the guard said with a polite bow, ”I hope you remember me from last night. This is Captain Garvin. He has some questions for you.”

"Captain, it is a pleasure," said the warrior with a slight smile as she noticed how attractive this man was. Eve wasn't usually the type to be so attracted to anyone, but he had definetly caught her eye.

”I understand you had a little excitement with some archers last night. I was hoping you could give me some details about what happened last night. It’d be very helpful.”

Eve nodded, and was about to speak to the Captain about what had happened when Helli ran out hysterically. "My son…. My son… Where is he?… Why isn’t he back yet?… My poor boy… where is my son?”

Eve looked back to the Captain, feeling horrible for Helli. Her life just wasn't turning out all that great. "Captain, I don't know who was firing upon us. But I have a feeling that it has something to do with her son. I would like to go out to the forests to find him..."

@Eve:

Captain Gavrin frowned at Helli's outburst and Eve's "request". But even while frowning, there was a charming and handsome edge to his worry. He tried to soothe Helli, "Madam, please, calm down. We are all worried about your son. He seemingly wandered off the group he was with. I have already sent men to scout the forests early this morning, and any news of your son will be borne back swiftly by my men. I'm sure no harm has come to your son."

But Helli was hysterical, she clutched at Eve's sleeves, and cried out pleadingly at Eve, "Yes, please, please! Please find my son for me! Please find Lornen for me! Please, i beg you, please!" Her desparateness was evident in her choked tone of voice.

Captain Gavrin shook his head grimly at Eve, and spoke in counsel, "Ma'am, i advise you to stay here with Lornen's mother, and try to console her, or calm her down. My men will do their best, that is assured. However, if you insist on setting out on a search yourself, i am afraid i can spare no further men to go along with you."

Helli looked pleadingly at Eve. She was sure Eve would help her. She didn't trust the other guards, after what happened to Lornin, her other son.

Glayron is shocked at the words from the person who stand before him, but doesn't ask any questions.  He simply takes note of this strange behavour and follows the man's orders.

As another man confronts Glayron, he seems a little curious as to how Glayron is able to speak to animals.

"Sir, I speak to animals just the same as I speak with you now, with words.  Though like you and I have our own language, Tharian, and elves having their own, Styrásh, each animal speaks its own language as well."

Glayron wonders if he was a little harsh in his explanination.

Evelaria looked at the Captain who she saw frowning. She raised an eyebrow at his frown. And then looked at the poor woman clinging to her arm. She sighed, feeling horrible that the Captain insisted on Eve staying.

"Captain, I need not your men nor do I need your permission to travel as I see fit. I am highly capable of fending for myself as your men have seen last night. I will go into the forest to find her son...I have a feeling that your men will not return. You may send whoever you wish with me, but if you do not have any then so be it. I shall go alone. Helli, stay here and calm down, do not venture back to your home without someone to accompany you."

Eve looked at the Captain, smiled sternly with her jaw's clenched and walked back to her tent. Once in her tent she grabbed her axes from the floor, and began to clean them, pulling out various tools from her sack to sharpen the edges of her blades. Once this was done she simply attached them to her waist and walked out taking the sack and the jug of water with her.

She approached the Captian and Helli, smiled and then walked to the gate, pushing one of the guards out of her way and heading towards the forest.

@Eve:

Helli immediately lapsed into tears of joy when Eve declared that she would venture towards the woods and try to find her son. Helli was obviously not over the shock of last night yet, seeing that she was having swings of emotions.

Captain Gavrin shook his head slightly as Eve walked back towards her tent. He gave more orders to his men to send a scout to the group that he had dispatched earlier, to let them know that a woman was heading towards the woods too, and that if they bump into her they should convince her to merge with their group. Captain Gavrin sighed. That was all he could do.

When Eve emerged out of her tent and started heading towards the forest, Helli quickly intercepted her strides and stood in fronnt of her, blocking her way, "Please, i need to come along with you! I need to make sure my son is alright! I won't let anything happen to him again!"

Helli stoutly stood her ground and was not to be persuaded otherwise. Her ankle sprain hadn't turned out to be too serious, and she was limping slightly, but otherwise she was walking fine.

Ok, Helli's going to be going along with you ... at least for a while anyway ;)  Commence posting in the Shivering Woods Vicinity thread. Your character will be heading NorthEast, and thus will not be bumping into any of the other characters that are already in that thread. Just make one post there before i move you along ... it doesn't not have to be a long or elaborate post :)

@Glayron:

"Sir, I speak to animals just the same as I speak with you now, with words. Though like you and I have our own language, Tharian, and elves having their own, Styrásh, each animal speaks its own language as well."

The young guard that had asked Glayron the question about his abilities seem to shift around awkwardly ... probably at his own ignorance. Still, the young guard tried to be friendly -- life at the camp was monotonous at best. He held out a hand towards Glayron and smiled, "Name's Sherman. I heard that you are called Glayron? We'll just be moving out for a routine scouting trip today, but the Captain's been worried about recent events at the camp lately ... i'm sure you've heard talk about it."

As the other guards moved forward towards the West, headed by a lieutanent who Glayron made out to be Rolalf, Sherman continued speaking to Glayron, "Well, perhaps you can talk to the animals near the fringes of the woods, you know? Try to find out if anything has been going on in the woods lately ... though, the animals around the woods aren't too friendly ... they say that the woods twist the animals and things inside it to make it as evil as they are, you know." Sherman shrugged, and continued walking forward with the other men.

Your next posts will commence in the Shivering Woods Vicinity thread. Just make one post there before i move your plot along. Your character is a little behind in terms of Kiushapo and Mina's time span, so you might bump into them later, or you might not ;)

Eve sighed at Helli, knowing that the woman wasn't fit to come. But it was her life and her decision, so Eve just said nothing and wandered off.

She lead the man at her arm carefully, making their way slowly towards the Shivering Woods. She hoped to meet up with someone else in a way of consulting them in the best possible way to enter the woods. The stories and rumors did nothing to calm her but she felt no great fear from the woods. It did not intimidate her. Sephariath was unusually quiet throughout their trip but then again, she was not that talkative
herself.

As they approached the encampment, men were already busy. Running about doing the needed work that had to be done for the day. Absently, she replaced her hood that she had removed earlier to allow more freedom of sight. She wanted to keep herself hidden for some reason. Perhaps it helped her feel more at ease with the situation, she didn't really know but it allowed her to breathe easier with her features hidden deep within the shadows. For some reason, she felt uneasy with the mood of the camp and she tightened her hold on Seph's arm.

The time for this plot thread will be 14 Bells.

@Kalina & Sephariath:

The guards were busy. It was midday, and everyone had the noonday meal on their mind. Campfires were being lit, saucepans and other crockery were being carried around in a bid to hasten food preparation.

A guard with dark crimson curls sticking out of an ill-fitting helmet saw the odd sight of a hooded lady leading what seemed to be a blind man to the encampment grounds. Wondering who they were and why had their entered the camp grounds, the guard stepped forward and hailed both of them, "Halt! Who goes there?"
