Title: The Shack of Kestrel the Crazed
Post by: Khiera Meneris on November 17, 2003, 11:08:22 PM
You halt in your steps as you notice the extremely odd-looking shack in front of you. It seemed to be made of pieces of wood of all sizes, some still with the leaves on them. As you look closer, you notice what seems to be pieces of animal skin, bark, different tatters of bright coloured fabrics, and even a couple of pots and pans as well as other odds and ends that made up the body of the shack. How it was all held together in one piece to make up the shack, you could only guess.

On both sides of the shack, you notice wild roots and other vegetables growing in coarsely drawn out patches. It was clear that someone lived here and grew their own food. A couple of flat-topped boulders stood close to each other in the immediate vicinity of the shack, and you couldn’t help but comment to yourself how much it looks like it the two boulders were being used as a table and a chair.

The sound of someone singing disrupted your train of thought. It was aged, crackly voice, hardly melodious to the ear, and it was in some sort of language that you did not know.

“Julkoi-yumitro! Gagahulo-yaaaashi! Ninoplatef-shoooooobi! Huhuyuteee …”

Having (somehow) found their way to this little hut, Cacunai and Yerun stood out of sight of the hut, at Cacunai's insistence. Cacunai listened carefully to the warbling (one might call it) but couldn't discern any actual language. She turned to Yerun and spread her hands wide in the age old gesture of "Right, this is as far as my thought train goes. Your turn."

All right, boy, this is it. Now what would you have us do?

Post by: Bahran the bear on January 13, 2004, 11:38:22 AM
Bahran the bear, not the similarly named human, heard a noise in the near distance. His massive head raised up from his dinner, his ears scanning the distance for another noise. When no other noise was detected, he put his muzzle back into the freshly slain carcass of his prey. He proceeded to rip the flesh with his teeth and claws from the dead animal, eating only some of it, slinging the rest onto near by trees.

The bear then heard another noise. This time it sounded like talking, not just walking.
"Bad people come to be mean to crazy lady?" Bah growled under his breath, getting up and standing on only his hind legs. He could now see much farther, since his reared up height was nearly 3 peds. Bahran couldn't see anything, but that was no matter, he was somewhat deep in the forest, and didn't expect to see anyone in there with him. He lowered himself back down onto all fours and scurried over to the edge of the woods, being as quiet as a creature well over 6 pygges could.

Nearing the edge, a couple forms came into view, just out of sight of Kestrel's cottage. Bahran slowly edged his way into the open, eyeing the new-comers warily.

"You not be mean to crazy lady!" The bear growled at the two new people. He had become quite skeptical of travellers in the past few months he had lived with Kestrel. He was still about a dash away from the two, but his booming voice was loud enough to be heard by them.

Talking bears, can't live with 'em, could do without 'em.

The time for this plot thread will be 16 Bells.

@Cacunai, Fluffy & Bahran:

It had been a long trek, Yerun was a little weary, his eyes still puffy from his earlier bawl, but finally they had reached an odd-looking shack, and Cacunai seemed to think that they have arrived at where Kestrel was ... or was supposed to be anyway. Looking around, the shack was located quite near to the fringes of the woods, and Yerun felt a really, really odd and indescribable tingle of familiarity inside of him, that was starting to make him nervous.

"All right, boy, this is it. Now what would you have us do?"

Yerun had heard the strange words that seemed to be sung from from within the little shack ... he knew it definitely wasn't animal, and was not too sure that it was a human language that he understood either.

Yerun squeezed a faint smile at Cacunai, trying to express gratitude for bringing him all the way here, and then proceeded to make his way towards the shack, to see who was in there, if it was indeed Kestrel.

When he had taken but 2 steps forward, he heard a loud, snarling growl that boomed from the direction of the forest. "You not be mean to crazy lady!" Yerun gaped as he noticed it was a talking bear. He stood planted to the ground where he was, and looked sideways towards Cacunai, wondering if they should continue stepping forward.

Sparky, who meanwhile wandered into Cacunai's pocket to "have a word" with Fuzzytail, perched out at the sound of the loud voice; so did the mouse. Both shrugged as they saw a huge bear in front of them. A bear! Every animal knew that a bear meant trouble. Bears were huge and lazy and not really tender when you interrupted their sleep. And they loved honey, but that didn't seem to be dangerous. Well, as long as you were not a bee.

Cacunai sighed and closed her eyes, thinking wearily, more talking animals. Will I never be free of them..., that is, before her mind really registered that the voice belonged to a very large specimen of talking animalia. A bear... she slowly turned around, ignoring Yerun's look of questioning. The bear stood in the open, glaring suspiciously at the two human(oid)s.

We aren't going to be... mean... to the, um, crazy lady.... We only want to talk to her.

Strangely, she felt no fear, only faint exasperation and weariness... for which she had no explanation. She tended to be moody, it was true, but she hated magic and all things magical. Except  for song... she loved song.

The bear turned his head a little to glare, as well as a bear can, at the lady-thing that spoke to him.

"Lady-thing not lie to Bahran! Bahran doesn't like to be lied to!" The bear boomed at the small lady-thing. Bahran lumbered over to a few peds away from where she was. He sniffed the air heavily, moving his head around wildly as he did so.

"Lady-thing, you not human! What are you lady-thing?" Bahran of course only had a one tract mind, so he had already forgotten about the act of them trespassing on crazy lady's land.

And Lady-thing doesn't like to be threatened. So I'd show a bit more courtesy if I were you.

Suddenly feeling bold, Cacunai assumed a scolding tone. She knew not why, no, but she simply felt inclined to do it. She laughed sharply at the bear's newest question. If he had never seen an elf, that meant Kestrel was not an elf, if she was the crazy lady of whom the bear spoke. Bahran, apparently. And it was highly that this was so.

I am an elf, Bahran, Bear of the Shivering Woods. I am not one to be trifled with.

Yerun made what sounded like a whimper, and moved slowly and cautiously behind Cacunai. Not only had the bear spoke, but the bear seemed to be angry at them for some reason.

Yerun tried to shrink his body as small as possible with his mind behind Cacunai. Of course, if that was possible than everyone could probably fly and do somersaults in the air while they are at it. But it wasn't of course, and the more Yerun cringed, the more "obvious" he felt to the Bear.

Yerun trembled in horror as Cacunai took a tone of admonishment with the bear. Why would anyone be snappy to a flesh-eating animal three times their size, with sharp teeth and claws to match. If he wasn't as anxious to see Kestrel, Yerun would have just tugged at Cacunai to leave in the first place.

Slinking back even further from Cacunai and the bear, Yerun reached into his pockets and whispered to the Ramblers within, "Maybe one or some of you can sneak into the shack over there, and find out if there's really someone called Kestrel in there ..." He then wondered if rats were afraid of bears, "Please?"

The mighty bear stared down at the lady-thing.

"Elif" The bear growled, he "mouthed" the word a couple times after that.
"Bahran not know what elif is." He stated matter-of-factly, glaring down at the little lady-thing. Bahran did not know what "trifled" meant, but he was pretty sure it was food.

"Why you elifs want to speak with crazy lady?" He growled, regaining his angry demeanor.

"Maybe one or some of you can sneak into the shack over there, and find out if there's really someone called Kestrel in there ..." - said Yerun.

Smuggles and Teapot looked at eachother. Then they looked at the bear outside the pocked. Then at Manymeals who was peacefully sleeping between them both. "Wake up! Wake up!" - they shaked him: "Time to do somethingat at last!"
*Sqrr? Squa?* - said Manymeals.
"Run to that shack and look who's inside it. Then return and say to the boy!" - explained Smuggles: "Now stop sleeping already and go!" - she tried to push him out of the pocket: "And watch out for..." - Manymeals jumped down. "...The bear", - finished Smuggles.

Manymeals ran through the high grass, dodging the occasional beetles and worms. Before him loomed the dark entrance into the shack.

Bahran continued to glare at the small lady-elif. He began to growl something at her, when suddenly, he noticed something small and furry jumped out from behind the small lady-elif.

"Elif has evil mousey!" Bahran shout-growled down at the small woman. He pulled back his enormous paw, as if to strike the small woman. The tremendous bear let out a bellowing roar as he threw his head up into the air.

"Bahran no like evil mousey!" He erupted, as he moved his paw towards the little elif's head, hoping to remove it.

@Fluffy:

((OOC: I will leave the uhm ... interaction between Cacunai and the bear kind of separate to Manymeal's little journey into the shack ;) ))

As Manymeals approached the entrance of the shack, more strange and enthusiastic wordings could be heard from someone or something within the shack. "Klopretyu!! Hanna haana!!! Tiorespiugla!!!"

As Manymeals was about to make his way further into the shack to "investigate", a faint, soft sqritching sound could be heard. It was rat-speak, and the soft, feminine sounding squirth (to a rat anyway ... whatever that meant) sounded out towards Manymeals, "Who are you?"

As Manymeals turned towards the source of the voice uhm ... squeak, he saw the, approaching from within the shack, the elegant shape of a rat covered in snow white fur, with a long, attractive pink tail and shiny sharp teeth.

If Rats had magazines, they would have centrefolds and cover models. If they had centrefolds and cover models, this dainty little female rat would be the multi-fold oogling target of many a rat in lands near and far.

((Hey! My princess! Cool! :number1 ))

Manymeals turned 'round and saw what appeared for him to be a  dother of some ratty god (yeah, rats too have gods). Manymeals took a deep breath

"I.. ahm... uh... Manymeals" - he stood up on his rear legs and tried to bow, but fell down. From the ground he continued: "I'm... ah... On a mission here! Very secret! Very dangerous! I'm a spy, you know. By only speaking to me you bring yourself in great peril!"

@Fluffy:

((OOC: *chuckle*))

The white rat's eyes widened like two exquisite marbles as she heard what Manymeals said, "Spy? Mission? What is that? What are you talking about?" (You have to remember that Ximax rats have unusual intelligence where rats are concerned, but that is not so with common rats).

Before Manymeals could answer though, a sound like distant thunder rumbled throughout the shack, and the floor of the shack trembled at the wave of approaching sound.

The white rat squirkled urgently towards Manymeals, "Come here! To the corner! You have to stay out of her way, or she'll step on you!" The white rat dragged a dazed Manymeals by the tail into her corner, right at the moment when a sandaled foot stomped down from the air, narrowly missing Manymeals.

Two gigantic sandaled feet plodded around for a while with deafening stomping sounds. The two feet moved away after a while, and quiet reigned again, at least in Manymeals and the white rat's corner, the faint sounds of an odd enthusiastic singing drifting around in the shack, "Griolgpoooo! Hutyilopgrf nutrerespolita booooon!! Kevulostreeeee ..."

The white rat looked over Manymeals curiously, "Where do you come from? You are different. I am SmoothFur." SmoothFur flashed her white pearly teeth -- that was a rat's way of smiling a friendly smile.

"I... I come from Ximax", - started Manymeals: "A big citeh far away. A ma-gick-al siteh! But that's a long story. Currently I'm instivega... ivegista... investigating what's going on in this shack. There's my pack and an elven ladeh an' a boy out there waiting for me. I'm very important, you see", - Manymeals tried to look important.

He watched the big feet go by: "Who's that? And why does she? he? it? make such weird sounds? You could almost think it's a stuttering rat".

SmoothFur looked at Manymeals with much intrigue and curiosty. Manymeals spoke very ... differently from the rats that she had known all her life. She felt an urge to find out more about Manymeals. And what was this about a whole pack and a boy (SmoothFur was really awed when Manymeals mentioned that a human was actually waiting for him instead of trying to snap him up and place him into a vat of boiling water) waiting outside for Manymeals?? This was a really different rat. SmoothFur wanted to find out more.

"Who's that? And why does she? he? it? make such weird sounds? You could almost think it's a stuttering rat."

SmoothFur squirkled as if chuckling, "Well, she is nice. I don't know who she is, but there have been people who came here before and called her 'Kaestrhil' or something like that. She drops food around all the time. She sees us but doesn't chase us around. We like her."

SmoothFur looked Manymeals up and down, left and right, "Where is this Ximax? Is it the name of a clearing in the woods? Are you from the woods too? Why are you so important?" SmoothFur went up close to Manymeals and gently flicked her tail against him, as if caressing Manymeals in friendliness and warmth.

With speed born of desperation and long-tense muscles, Cacunai threw herself into a low crouch to avoid the huge bear's paw. Though he appeared to be rather stupid, all animals had some defense mechanism - and Bahran was not one to show any reservation with his strength. Mokmyr, you just had to throw us a bear, didn't you. Couldn't have sent a chipmunk or something, eh? she thought (Mokmyr's one of the many gods she believes in).

Tisn't my fault there are mice in this wood, she shouted. Calm yourself, bear!

Manymeals listened to SmoothFur, trying to calm down and pay attention to the words. Squeaks.

So, the owner of the feet was a she, and she was nice. The boy should be glad to hear that, Manymeals guessed.
And there were another rats in the shack. He remembered the last night and hoped, their manners were a bit better than those of the camp rats.

"Where is this Ximax? Is it the name of a clearing in the woods? Are you from the woods too? Why are you so important?"

"A clearing, yes, yes..." - said Manymeals not knowing how to explain what a city was: "A large clearing. And I... I travel. With my pack and the boy, and the elf... Why I'm so important? Weeeell..." - Manymeals pondered why he was so important: "I was the only one who dared to go here. Because there was a... a..." - he thought of the most dangerous monster that he knew: "There was a bear outside! Yes, a big angry bear!"

SmoothFur listened with growing awe at what Manymeals said. Big clearing! A human and a elf! SmoothFur was certain that Manymeals was the leader of his pack -- courageous, well-spoken err ... squeaken, and very knowledgable indeed. When Manymeals spoke of the bear though, SmoothFur broke out churkling (that's a rat's version of a chuckle).

"The bear is nice! He doesn't hurt us! He runs away from us!" SmoothFur continued churkling gaily, "He makes good friends with the woman! They talk funny together!"

SmoothFur flicked her tail gently over Manymeals again, and probed her pink nose against Manymeal's, "Will you take me to see your pack, and this human of yours?"

Bahran lost his balance upon missing the small elif, and nearly hit the ground. He looked up from the now semi-crouched position on the ground, up to the little face of the lady-thing.

"But mousey come from the air, behind you!" Bah lowly growled. Just then, he noticed a little boy, standing apparently behind where the elif was.

"You come to be mean to crazy-lady?" Bahran roared at the little boy, ignoring Lady-thing now.

Yerun was alarmed when the bear started to strike his large paw at Cacunai, but thankfully Cacunai deftly avoided the paw while Yerun took several steps back in fear, almost running off if he thought that he would survive alone in the woods surroundings.

Yerun's face turned a deathly white as the bear roared at him, "You come to be mean to crazy-lady?"

Yerun whimpered and cowered by Cacunai, trying to hide his figure behind hers.

Manymeals' face went plae under his fur. There actually was a bear outside! He started shuddering. "A bear! A bear! It's going to eat me, I know it!" - he screamed inside. Only the flicking of SmoothFur's tail comforted him a bit.

"Will you take me to see your pack, and this human of yours?"

Manymeals hesitated: "Uh... well..." "There's a bear outside! A bear outside! "I... ah... okay. I guess. You sure the b-b-bear is nice? I mean, I don't want... don't want... don't want you get hurt, that's it."

The child is under my protection, and neither of us want to be mean to the crazy lady, bear.

She spoke with cool composure that she did not feel. Even Cacunai, the mighty traveler who walked the roads of hunger and betrayl, who heard and understood the wind, even she was frightened. She shouldn't be. It was only a bear, nothing more, and a rather stupid one at that. Why should she be afraid? The other half of her spoke up with an air of smug confidence. It's that boy. @Fluffy, Cacunai & Bahran:

"The child is under my protection, and neither of us want to be mean to the crazy lady, bear."

Yerun nodded profusely at Cacunai's words. As he cowered ever closer to Cacunai, he felt the stiffness of the dirk that Cacunai had gave him earlier rub against his arm. Hoping that he would not have to use it, Yerun reached inside his jacket and placed a shaking palm on its hilt anyway.

Meanwhile, in the shack:

"I... ah... okay. I guess. You sure the b-b-bear is nice? I mean, I don't want... don't want... don't want you get hurt, that's it."

SmoothFur briefly stood on both her hind legs. She was excited. All her life, she had never heard of a rat ordering a human around (her rodent imagination had taken over now, dreaming up grand scenarios of rodent grandeur), it was usually the other way around, and usually into boiling water or spiky painful things.

"Crrrrrr! Let's go! Let's go!" SmoothFur nipped gently at Manymeal's tail, indicating for him to hurry along now and see the nice big bear who was swiping his deadly clawed paws around.

SmoothFur pranced out of the shack, and saw, just like Manymeals had said, a pointy-eared human standing protectively over another cowering human, with the bear throwing a nasty tantrum at both of them.

SmoothFur ran up to the bear, and hopped onto one of his hind legs planted on the ground. Then nipping the bear to get his attention, SmoothFur squeaked loudly and piercingly in quick succession, saying in rat-speak, "Bear! Go away!"

"Lady-thing not lie to Bah-" But suddenly he stopped. He felt something climb onto his leg, and slowly looked down at it.

"MOUSEY!" He roared, nearly jumping out of his skin. He bolted for the shack of the crazy-lady, not caring if the mouse was still touching him.

"The mousey try to kill me again!" He roared, in a frightened sounding roar, at the crazy-lady. He was standing just outside the doorway, hoping she heard him.

"Yeah, run, bear, run! And don't you try anything funny!" - Manymeals squeaked loud.

@Fluffy, Cacunai & Bahran:

The woman within the shack heard the commotion outside -- who could miss the ear-shattering roar of a terrified bear -- and plodded out to see what was happening.

To Cacunai and Yerun, out walked the diminutive figure of what seemed to be a middle aged woman. It seemed to be a middle-aged woman because it could also be otherwise construed as some sort of feathered furry human of some indistinguishable gender -- an assortment of odds and end seem to be what was composing the garb of the woman, pretty much like how the shack had been "dressed up". The woman walked with an odd gait, and had the various odds and ends on her clanging and banging into each other, making all sorts of noises from tinkles to quipples (yes, exactly: indescribable).

Looking at her surroundings with an odd puzzled yet amused look on her face, the woman first turned to the bear, who was shaking in fear, and spoke to the bear in a concerned tone like a mother to a child, "Chuchulop treepni??" Then noticed Cacunai and Yerun standing close together, and squinted at both of them, "Mwuitlfer gutoohepeplof??"

Down where the bear had stood before scooting over to the shack, Smoothfur stared in awe and silence at the elf and human that belonged to Manymeals.

Bahran's eyes widened as he listened to crazy-lady speak.

"But... but..." The bear stuttered. "Mousey tried to attack me again!" The bear looked like he was a five year old that had just been told that he couldn't have any candy... only a bear five old that had just been told that he couldn't have any candy.

He looked at Lady-thing, and frowned, sort of.
"Bahran is sorry Lady-thing," He frowned again, and glanced back at Crazy-lady.

"She wants to know what you doing here," He sighed and glanced back at crazy-lady, looking hurt.

Shooting disbelieving glances at the bear, acting like a petulant child, Cacunai edged closer to the hut, and the woman who had emerged from it. She tore her gaze from Bahran and managed to conjure up a bright smile for the woman.

Your gatekeeper is quite efficient... if I may introduce myself? I am Cacunai, a seer of the tree and the wave, and this is Yerun. We've come to speak to you. We mean you no harm.

She tactfully made no mention of Yerun's profession... this woman, Kestrel no doubt, probably didn't like the townspeople much if they treated her as the guard had. She certainly seemed sane enough, if a bit odd. A small part of Cacunai's brain set itself to the task of trying to decipher the woman's odd language. It had to be a languge of some sort if the bear could understand it.

@Fluffy, Cacunai & Bahran:

Yerun followed meekly behind Cacunai as she walked up to the odd-looking woman. He felt oddly drawn towards her for some strange reason that he couldn't explain. Now they were finally face to face with her, and he had a juiliion (Yerun couldn't count you see, a juillion sounded like some counting figure he had heard from someone once in the tavern) different questions he wanted to ask the odd woman ... he just needed to figure out how to actually say them out.

"Your gatekeeper is quite efficient... if I may introduce myself? I am Cacunai, a seer of the tree and the wave, and this is Yerun. We've come to speak to you. We mean you no harm."

The odd looking woman smiled happily at both Cacunai and Yerun as if they were both distant relatives who had came to visit her bearing riches and gifts. She reached out and held Cacunai's hands, and shook them vigorously, "Klouupytipii! Juuuurett!! Nunimomolar!" Then she peered at a nervous looking Yerun, and then squinted for quite a while at him, finally turning to both the bear and Cacunai and asking in a semi-excited manner, "Huleehoot!! Brisylkhatna!! Neee!!! NEEEE!!!"

Smoothfur ran up to the Ramblers who had all tumbled out of Yerun's pockets and now congregated on the ground. Daintily, she curtsied (use your imagination) to the group with much awe and respect, especially glancing repeatedly at Manymeals with idolation, "Hello! I am SmoothFur! I have met your leader Manymeals, and am much in awe at your human and elf! You seem to use them for transport, do they foray for food for you as well?"

As Ramblers listened to the words of the strange new rat, who scared the big bear, their eyes widened. Sparky who haven't yet finished discussing with Fuzzytail his behavior looked at Manymeals with an expression of wrath on his face. Manymeals, standing behind SmoothFur, fell on his knees and made wild gestures which probably meant that Sparky should play along and not give him out. Sparky gave Manymeals another angry look,but then his face calmed.

"Our leader, yes," - he squeezed out: "He is so smart, you know. So very damn smart..."
"Ahm, yes, the Big Ones are excellent for forays. We hardly need to get the food ourselves."

I'm sorry, m'lady, I don't understand. Do you understand me?

Cacunai's gaze darted quickly from Yerun to the strange woman. So, she did recognize him... at least it looked like it. The wind picked up and her cloak billowed around her slim form, only heightening the tension she felt. At least seven magical animals (ech, magic!), a woman who spoke no recognizable language but had some connection to Yerun, a huge wood, which they must ultimately enter, and it just so happened to be infested with evil-driven elves - well, probably. She mentally slapped herself, shoring up the broad smile on her face as she waited for the woman's answer; her expression had begun to slip. Suddenly, she remembered the cloth the old fortune teller had given her. She gently tugged her hands out of the woman's grasp and dug out the blueish scrap from a deep inside pocket of her cloak. She held it out so the woman could see it.

Do you recognize this?

@Fluffy, Cacunai & Bahran:

"I'm sorry, m'lady, I don't understand. Do you understand me?"

The odd looking woman grinned a toothy, yellowish at Cacunai, alternating her head motions between vigorous shaking and enthusiastic nodding. Yerun slowly stepped out from behind Cacunai, and approached the woman. He started to open his lips to try to speak, when Cacunai held out a scrap of bluish cloth towards the odd woman.

"Do you recognize this?"

The odd woman suddenly stopped, and stood completely motionless. Her eyes grew wide and round, and one clear, audible word escaped her lips as she stared at the scrap of cloth, as if mesmerized, "B..Bretha ..."

>>>>><<<<<<

Meanwhile, a little distance away from Cacunai and Yerun ...

SmoothFur was extremely impressed. So Manymeals was telling her the truth! Wouldn't the other rats in the shack be impressed, when she brought Manymeals, his pack and the two humans that he owned back to show them?? Also, would Manymeals be brave enough to venture into the woods??

SmoothFur beamed at Manymeals (which consisted of raising her whiskers suitably and flashing her pearly white, sleek teeth), "Come! Come with me to the shack! All the rats would want to meet you! We have been looking for someone courageous and wise enough to lead us into the woods for a long time now!"

SmoothFur looked expectantly at Manymeals, expecting him to rouse his pack and declare that he would lead all the rats into the woods.

"W-w-woods?" - asked Manymeals carefully: "What woods?" - he looked around, realizing, that he has been actually standing in the within the woods: "Er... I mean, why would a respectable rat like you with such fine manners go into the woods? I mean, the woods aren't the right place for such a beautiful young rat."

Manymeals has never been to any woods any never wished to enjoy the peace of nature under the trees. He knew that all the rats who were romantically enough to go there never returned. Cities on the other hand were just fine and comfortable. Manymeals liked cities.

Bretha, the landlady of the Regal Rusik. You know her?

Cacunai grinned inwardly. So, things were at last shaping up. Of course, it was still possible that this woman would shoo them away because she didn't like Bretha, or something like that... well, all she could do was hope.

@Fluffy, Cacunai & Bahran:

((OOC: What is SPS??? Also, seems like Bah is not going to be around tonight ... i'm puppeting your Bear a little Bah, just for a sentence or two ;) ))

"Bretha, the landlady of the Regal Rusik. You know her?"

With quivering hands, the odd woman slowly took the scrap of blue cloth from Cacunai, and held it tenderly in her arms. It looked like she was about to cry as she kept repeating the word, not hearing what Cacunai just said, "Bretha ... Bretha ... Bretha ..."

Suddenly, Yerun rushed forth from behind Cacunai, and stood face to face with the odd woman, the odd woman gazing at Yerun uncertainly. Yerun started to speak, his voice wavering, like he was learning to speak for the very first time: "My ... father ... my ... mother ... where??"

The bear growled menacingly at Yerun who had approached the odd woman, and cast an angered gaze at Cacunai when he saw how she had made the odd woman stammer the name "Bretha" repeatedly. "You know crazy-lady's mean sister??!!"

>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

SmoothFur looked at Manymeals skeptically, as if she didn't expect Manymeals to say such things. An awkward pregnant pause ensued between all the rats. And then, SmoothFur started to squeak reverently, like a shepherd err ... mouseherd to its pack. "A long, long time ago, the Great Mouseh descended from the Rind of Cheese in the Sky, and He founded our colony in the woods. Many, many more years passed, and our people spread forth from the woods, leaving their place of origin, forgetting the teachings of the Great Mouseh. For a long, long time now we have been waiting for the prophesized Mouphet as nibbled in the Sacred Cheese  to come and lead our people back to our place of origin in the woods, and there we will regain our former glory once more, and ..." SmoothFur glanced towards Cacunai and Yerun, " ... all rats will be able to own humans!!"

SmoothFur cleared her throat with an odd gurgling sound and spoke once more to Manymeals with a serious tone. "You are the Mouphet that has arrived! You must lead our people into the woods!"

"No, no! Not him! Not this fat lazy bungler!" - thought Fuzzytail: "I would make a much better Mouphet! I am a mouse in the first place!"

"But, why do you want to live in the woods? There are all kinds of dangerous beasts around and..." - began Manymeals, but Fuzzytail who was already planning the foundation of his own ratty empire quickly interrupted him: "But of course he will lead you into the woods! He's just a bit unsure about the details, isn't he?" - Fuzzytail prodded Manymeals: "Even the Great Mouphet cannot handle thoughtless, you know."

@Fluffy:

((OOC: I'm going to do a little semi-puppeting to move you along.))

SmoothFur beamed as she heard Fuzzytail speak up, though she wondered why a subordinate was speaking up for the leader of the pack in the first place. Ignoring Fuzzytail and looking admirably at Manymeals once more, SmoothFur beckoned, "Come! Come! All of them will be so joyful to finally see the Great Mouphet come to lead us back!!"

Manymeals was hesitant, but Fuzzytail had his desire set on his now new objective, and the others trailed behind Fuzzytail dragging Manymeals by his tail following SmoothFur as they scampered along the grass towards the shack, completely oblivious to the exchange between the two humans, a bear and an elf.

SmoothFur squirkled excitedly as they scurried along behind her, hoping that she was providing good information for the Great Mouphet,"Ever since our kind left the woods and spread forth, the dark figures have taken over our Sacred Site, and that's why we are hiding from humans now instead of eating them like cheese! The Great Mouphet will prove his Greatness, and lead our kind into the woods once more to the Sacred sight, and he will four-feetly (a rat's version of "single-handedly without any weapons" ) drive the dark figures away while our kind watch in awe --" SmoothFur stopped to take in a deep breath as they reached the entrance of the shack, and lost her train of thought in the process.

SmoothFur then gazed somberly at Manymeals, "First you must answer the Cheesy Question (pun intended!) to reveal yourself as the true Great Mouphet before you can approach the Sacred Cheese!" SmoothFur paused for effect, then began importantly, "How many holes does the Sacred Cheese have?"

OOC: Short Post Syndrome! I DIE WITH HONOR! :x

IC:

So, Bretha was crazy-lady's sister. Wait a moment, this was Kestrel, wasn't it? Aye, it had to be! So, Bretha was related to Kestrel, and she is somehow related to Yerun, which means Bretha is somehow related to Yerun... by blood? Marrige (sp?)?  Friendship, honor, debt? Cacunai did not move to intercept Yerun, but turned a withering glare on the bear and made a wiggling motion with her hand, like the movement of a mouse.

((This SPS-thingie seems to take over me too :\  ))

Sparky started to boil. If he had no fur, his face would certainly go red as a tomato. Did those two foolish teenagers think they were the leaders?!
Seeing his face expression, Smuggles came to Sparky and put her paw on his shoulder: "Let the children play," - she said calmly: "We women (ah... she-rats?) know you're the one to follow."

Meanwhile Manymeals stood before SmoothFur and pondered what to answer her. Damn, how was he supposed to know how many holes this stupid piece of cheese had? He sighed. For the first time he was interested in another rat, and she turned out to be a fanatic.
"Well..." - he said finally: "It has to be a meowt-a-furrycal question, right? You see, if the cheese was sacred, then you would have to keep it for hundreds of years, like any other sacred thing. But if you would keep it  this long, it would be overgrown by mushrooms and decay. This means, the sacred cheese is non-existent and, therefore, has no holes."

@Cacunai:

((OOC: Oh ... so that's what SPS is ... didn't know it was a syndrome all by itself!! Well, let's inject a little movement into your plot thread then and see if that helps jolt something, eh? ;)  ))

Seeing no response from Cacunai but an annoying wiggling motion from her hand, the bear growled again, this time louder, but did not step forward, probably because the odd woman had moved towards the bear, and clutched on to its large furry frame, as if seeking protection, her eyes all the while still trained intently on Yerun.

Yerun, seeing no response from the odd woman, struggled with himself to press further words out from his lips, "K.. Kestrel?? My ... mother ... father ... where?!" This time, there was a distinct sense of urgency in his tone, and Yerun's whole body had started to shudder uncontrollably.

The odd woman, who had been addressed as Kestrel by Yerun, whimpered slightly, and merely continued repeating Lady Bretha's name. The boy and woman stood at an uncomfortable impasse for the briefest of moments that seemed like hours had passed, until suddenly Yerun gave a sharp, anguished cry, and before anyone could stand in his way, he rushed straight towards the woods, and his skinny figure was soon swallowed up by the shivering trees.

Right ... you can follow him, or stay and ask questions etc ... all up to you ;)  If you decide to run after Yerun in the woods, commence posting in the Shivering Woods thread.

@Fluffy:

((OOC: :lol   Great post!!))

An uncomfortable silence descended upon all of the rats (and one mouse) as Manymeals declared the answer. SmoothFur merely stood motionless, staring at Manymeals with a blank expression.

Then, a sharp, piercing squeak emerged from the corner, and an accented squirtch in rat-speak sounded out from within the darkness of the shack, "It is the Mouphet! He has come! He has come!!" And before anyone (err ... rodent) could stir or squeak in response, a group of scurrying figures emerged from within the shack, an assortment of rats -- grey, greyish, light greyish, brown, brownish, dark brownish ... scrawny ones, well-fed ones, teething ones, broken tooth ones, limping ones, hopping ones ... all manner of shapes, colour and sizes. There was easily 30 rats now gathered at the doorway of the shack besides SmoothFur and the Ramblers.

Hushed chittering and sqritching could be heard as two stout bodied rats helped the figure of an old, frail, black rat who looked liked he had been chewed by one cat too many forward from the crowd towards Manymeals. SmoothFur announced reverently to all, "The Mouphet speaks the truth!" SmoothFur swished her tail towards the old, decrepit looking black rat, "This is Ehytoomuch, he was the last of the last to nibble on the Sacred Cheese! The Sacred Cheese lives in every and all of us!" There was a round of cheers from the rats all round -- which sounded like "xxyytcchhhxxyyyttcchhhh!!!" over and over again.

SmoothFur stood on her hind legs, and addressed Manymeals, "We are all ready to follow your lead into the woods Great Mouphet!"

Right, you can commence posting at the Shivering Woods thread. Or, if there's anything else you want to do before heading into the woods (like ... oh, i don't know ... give orders or something? hehehe), continue posting here before we head to the woods. :devilish
