Title: Ring of Stones
Post by: Khiera Meneris on November 17, 2003, 11:10:22 PM
You were beginning to feel a sense of panic and confusion, thinking that surely you were now lost beyond all hope, when, with a brush of few Larkentir branches away from your view, you suddenly spot a clearing right ahead of you.

You take into view a circular patch of burnt soil almost three peds wide in diameter. You wonder if the ground had been recently burnt, or, if that was not the case, wouldn’t the grass and other foliage had grown back by now?

You look warily at the ring of stones that stand erect within this burnt circle of soil. Each stone was about 2 peds high and irregular in shape and cut. You spot strange symbols etched onto each of the stones, but you have no idea what they meant or stood for.

You notice an eerie silence all around you. You could feel a gentle breeze in the air, but the Larkentir trees here all around the Ring of Stones were, strangely, not moving at all.

Oh no. Magic, she muttered. The moment Cacunai had stepped into view of the ring of stones, she shuddered and closed her eyes. Magic was all around her, she could feel it in the air. It held danger, danger she could not fight. Well, at least now she didn't have to keep one eye on Yerun; Eve could do that for her. Even if Eve didn't, surely one of them would be looking at the boy at all times. That man, Thaetum, was sure to be no help. She shuddered again. An innate distrust of menfolk (or as one of the three directors for the play calls them: mancubs) burned bright in her. No reason, not that she knew of, just a feeling that they weren't trustworthy. Of course, that didn't stop her using them for her own purposes.

Eve soon came to the stones, following Thaetum and not paying any attention to the young man or his pack of rats. She looked at Cacunai, who was looking at her and Yerun. If she wanted Eve to be a babysitter she would have to think again. Eve was a killer...hardcore...not a babysitter...softy. She still had her blades drawn as a sign that she too had felt uneasy when entering this part.

She didn't see the dark magic floating about this place as did the Seer, but she did get the feeling that something dark and powerful was watching her. "Thaetum....this is it?" she asked looking at the giant stone rings around her.

These rings were what she had come for in the first place. Chaos had given Eve a task...find these stones and bring one to him. But now, seeing the massiveness of these stones Eve highly doubted she was capable of such a feat. "These stones are larger than I thought."

The warrioress, looked around the forests as Yerun passed her by. She wouldn't tend to his every need, but with him being an Eyelian she felt a duty to protect him.

The rats one after another stepped on the clearing. Many dozens of little feed left their traces on the the burned ground. They didn't hesitate and had no fear; this place wasn't worse than any dark cellar with scary spiders.

Something was wrong though, and the older rats could sniff it in the air. The clearing didn't look like it belonged into these woods. And it definitely didn't look like any kind of paradise.

The faces of the Big Ones, even Yerun, wore grim expressions which promised nothing good.  Further and further away the rats were getting from home...

Thaetum stood with a grim expression on his face, arms tensed and folded across his chest, probably grappling on to some hidden weapon, and he warily surveyed the surroundings ... and the deathly silence around them.

"Thaetum....this is it?"

In his usual gruff tone, this time with a heavier tinge of worry and nervousness, Thaetum gestured for all of them to stay close within range of each other, "This is it. Wretched, cursed place. Keep yer eyes open and yer ears sharp. I don't ... sense those bloody elves around, but around this place, yer better be sure that there are worse things than elves around." His lips twitched nervously, "And don't go touching those stones."

Yerun seemed immersed in his own little world. His eyes glazed over when they reached the Ring of Stones, and they searched frantically for ... a trace of ...

Something caught Yerun's attention. His head perked up suddenly, and he started taking firm steps forward, rounding the stones, and heading towards the other side of the stony circle.

From the corner of Eve's eye, it looked to her like the symbols on one of the stones were flashing ... glowing even. She thought she heard faint whispers drifting from the center of the circle.

From the corner of Cacunai's eye as well, there seemed to be a flickering glow hovering over a symbol, on a different stone. But she heard no faint whispers, just a soft, drowsy buzz, that seem to also be originating from the center of the circle.

The rats were starting to get confused.

"Stones?? Stones??"

"Wasn't it one Stone of the paradise??"

"This must not be the right rocks!"

"No, it can't be ... where is all the cheese?"

The rats were more than confused. Why had they come all this way? Were they supposed to go on again? Where was this place??

And then the Kuatu, who had hopped along excitedly after the not-so-excited group, suddenly lept up and down again, in another display of superior rodent emotional display, "There there!! Preeeeeetty! Preeeeeeetty white furry!!" The kuatu had its gaze mesmerized towards the center of the rings.

When Sparky turned his head towards where the Kuatu was looking at in annoyance, he was momentarily dumbfounded. Wasn't that SmoothFur standing right there, in the centre of the ring???

Fuzzytail looked out of Yerun's pocket. The symbols on the stones around him started to glow  strangely. "Yerun? What's going on here?" - Fuzzytail asked the boy, but he didn't seem to listen.
Then the mouse saw the white ratty silhouette in the middle of the stone ring. SmoothFur? But he had seen with his own eyes how she died!

Meanwhile Sparky chose a random rat from the troupe, grabbed it and pulled close to himself. "What's all the chatter about? What  paradise stones? There's magic all around us, I know how it smells! Been in Ximax." With the corner of his eye Sparky watched Manymeals, hoping he won't try anything foolish. In vain, of course, because the first thing Manymeals did when he saw SmoothFur was to run to her.

Eve looked uneasily at the stones, hearing a faint whispering, almost like a chatter. What was it? Eve didn't know and she didn't really want to find out. The whispering noises didn't sound harmful...just mysterious. She slowly moved towards the center, until something caught her eye.

"A rat? What is....," Eve's eyes drifted towards the other rats, who seemed to know this one. "Who is that?" she asked them.

"What's all the chatter about? What paradise stones? There's magic all around us, I know how it smells! Been in Ximax."

Other rats had gathered around Sparky now, and as they heard what he said, started to chitter excitedly amongst themselves, "Mare-jig? Is that something to eat??" "Sounds like ... a type of milk!" "Isn't cheese from milk?" "Hey ... it's SmoothFur!"

A rat spotted the figure of what seemed to be SmoothFur standing in the middle of the stones, and his gaze followed Manymeal's sprint towards the figure. His whiskers twitched excitedly. A ripple of loud chittering ensued throughout the group of rats again, debating whether or not to head into the center of the rings along with Manymeals.

As Manymeals arrived at the center of the ring, he frantically scanned all around him, but, where was SmoothFur??? She was no where to be seen! As Manymeals sniffed around half-panicking, he suddenly felt an odd sensation all over. First, his tail felt like it was vanishing ...

Outside of the ring though, the spectre of SmoothFur was still visible to all.

Meanwhile, a voice from Yerun's pocket rang out, "Yerun? What's going on here?" But Yerun seemed to not have heard the mouse, and merely kept stepping foward, going round the Stones, until --

Thaetum gave out a loud exclamation, "Ava be drunk!"

In clear, plain sight To Eve, Cacunai, Thaetum, and all the rats, a little girl of Yerun's height had appeared right in front of Yerun on the other side of the ring. She had wispy blonde hair, and her clothes looked worn but fine. Yerun looked at her in a daze. She smiled at Yerun, and then turned to all present, her blue eyes sparkling, and her tender, young voice piercing through the uncomfortable, deathly silence around them, "Hello."

As she turned to face them, a hushed silence suddenly befell the rats.

Thaetum looked haplessly at Eve and Cacunia. Children were a woman's matter. He didn't know what to do with all those darn kids seemingly running around everywhere today.

Eve's eyes widened when the young girl appeared seemingly out of nowhere. She lowered her weapons, and began to walk up the young girl. Her clothes were fine, better than any Eve had ever seen. They were worn a bit, but the texture and fabrics look liked something she had only seen on royalty. Royalty? Could this be the young girl Eve was seeking?

I can't believe that I never even asked what the girl looked like, she thought to herself.

"Are...are you lost?" she asked cautiously. On the outside the girl looked harmless, but Eve had a strange feeling that there was somthing darker to this child...

Title: Re: Ring of Stones
Post by: Cacunai on March 13, 2004, 10:29:22 AM
Cacunai turned her head uneasily. She saw a small white rat sitting in the center of the circle, and she knew she had seen the same rat die, pierced by one of Cacunai's own darts. She hadn't really registered it at the time, but now she knew that there was something very unreal about this place. As the small form of the girl appeared, she hissed softly under her breath, not menacingly, but in surprise. Yerun moved forward, toward the girl, and Cacunai stepped quickly after him, reaching out a hand to catch him, though she did not touch him. She said in a low voice, edged with urgency,

Yerun. Come here, Yerun, come over here with me.

Evelaria's thought also ran through Cacunai's mind, but the elven woman's judgement was tempered by the wisdom of a seer and the discretion of one who learned it early on. The child, the girl, should not be here and she had appeared from nowhere. The air did not smell right. Sharty-boy had said that the Princess was not alive, but neither was she dead... the air did not smell right.

"Not Mare-jig! Ma-gick! Ma-gick! That's how it's pronounced, you  fools!" - snarled Sparky at the rats who were starting to annoy him by not answering his every single question.
Then he turned his head to Evelaria: "This is SmoothFur," - said Sparky to the woman, wondering if she could actually understand him: "She died some time ago... and now she standing there alive again..."

Manymeals felt funny. He felt like he had been running for a week and his body had refused to obey him. He tried to move, to say something, but he couldn't. Then suddenly a stream of little sensations flowed through Manymeals, filling him up with knowledges and memories he never had before. The whole world around him changed.
Manymeals stood up on his rear legs and started to walk around the stone circle, holding his heads with the forepaws. "Get out! Get out! GET OUT!!!" - he screamed hysterically with an old human voice: "I don't know you! Who are you?! What do you want?!"

Noone of the rats tried to help Manymeals. Not even to come close to him. All they did was stand in place and gaze at the girl with fear. The ratty crowd hissed, growled and scraped the ground with their claws, their fur stood up.

@Cacunai, Eve & Fluffy:

((OOC: Ok Fluffy, you're in control of the ratty group from this point until further notice ... but i'll just puppet Fuzzytail for this post :) ))

The little girl looked around wide-eyed at both Eve and Cacunai, an inquisitive glint in her eyes, blinking ever so often, as if she was utterly fascinated by everything around her.

"Yerun. Come here, Yerun, come over here with me."

Fuzzytail, who sensed that something was amiss as well, and didn't like what was going on, pushed against Yerun in Yerun's pocket, urging Yerun as well, "Yerun, go to the elf lady, go, go!"

But Yerun seemed mesmerized by the mysterious little girl, staring at her with a blank expression, and did not move nor indicate that he had heard Cacunai and Fuzzytail's words.

"Are...are you lost?"

The little girl turned towards Eve, smiling, but with a confused look on her face, turning her head to and fro, as if pondering deeply about Eve's question, "Lost? I .. i think so ... oh dear, i think ... i am lost ... i can't seem to get out of ... this forest ... it's ... it's quite worrying ... "

Her puzzled expression melted into a light, high-pitched giggle as she noticed Manymeal's antics in the Ring, "What is that funny little rat doing? He speaks like an old man!" She giggled continuosly, pointing at Manymeals.

Thaetum tightened his grip on his dagger. He didn't like what the rat was doing. Rats weren't supposed to ... talk like that. And what was with the little girl? He shifted uncomfortably from one foot to the other.

If Yerun wasn't going to come to her, she would go to Yerun. This was not a good sort of position to be in. Yerun should respond - he must not have heard through the magic that surrounded this place. Cacunai walked briskly up to Yerun and took his hand firmly, leaving the little girl to Eve. Cacunai had no weapon against magic except for her amulet and that protected only her, not the boy or Eve or -heh- Thaetum. Or the rats. But they would be fine, she was sure.

Cacunai had always been one for thinking quickly on her feet, and she quickly formulated a sort of theory about all this, so that she could figure out how to react. Sharty-boy had said the Princess was not dead. Neither was she alive, though. Assuming this was the Princess, perhaps she could 'live' only in the Ring they now stood in and around. She [the princess] may very well be innocent, and really be lost. But the girl in the Ring did not look more than about eleven or so, if that. And a princess of five years would never be allowed to walk alone in a wood. So was it the princess at all?

Eve stared at the girl, truly confused by her expressions. Her voice made her sound afraid and lost but her smile was satanic and made Eve feel like chopping her head off of her young shoulders in one brief and fluid motion. The warrior watched Cacunai, she seemed uneasy about this girl. The two women shared mutual feelings; Eve did not trust the girl either.

"What is your name and how did you get here?... Are you Princess Nalaere?"

She watched the rat in the middle of the ring. She had no clue that he was speaking with a human voice because whether he did or not she would still understand what he was saying...it would still sound human to her.

Eve began to back away from the ring, but only far enough so that she was out of the young girl's arm length. If this was the princess there was no way she could have been alive for so long living within these rings. "Thaetum...what is going on?" Eve asked the more experienced man.

Confused Manymeals, continued running inside the stone circle, without taking any notice what was happening around him. He was just a little rat and there wans't enough place in him for all those big human memories.

Meanymeals could remember thousands of details from someone else's life. He knew how to write and how to read, he knew how to make soup and how to cast magic. The memories were so overwhelming, he couldn't drive them away. He acted as if he was crazy or drunk and there was nothing to do about it.

"Get me a mage! Quick! I can't control myself!" - he shouted to Nai and Eve: "Oh NO! I think I'm going to throw a lightning bolt right now! Get down!"

@Cacunai, Eve & Fluffy:

((OOC: Oh ... yeah ... i forgot to mention that the little girl looks around 11 years old, just a little younger than Yerun ... sorry ... ))

Yerun jolted as he felt Cacunai's firm grasp on him. It was as if he had just been startled from a deep, troubled sleep. Yerun blinked repeatedly as he was led away, his gaze lingering on the little girl, unable to tear it away.

The little girl cocked her head to one side, watching the growing distance between her and Yerun.

"What is your name and how did you get here?... Are you Princess Nalaere?"

The little girl twirled a lock of her soft, blonde hair with a finger, wide-blue eyes peering around her, seemingly a little taken aback by Eve's question, "Princess ... Nalaere ... yes, yes, my name is Nalaere ... but ... no one has called my name in ... such a long time ... I .. i think i would like to go home, can you ... take me home ... i can't seem to find my way out of this ... forest ..." Her expression turned into puzzlement as Eve started backing away from her.

Thaetum had stood a little distance aways from the little girl, and did not hear the ensuing conversation. "Thaetum...what is going on?" He fidgeted nervously with a dagger in hand, "I don't know ... I've never been able to approach these stones without being driven away by those bloody elves before, this is the first time ... who is that little girl?? How did she get here all by herself and ... is unharmed??"

An aged, gnarled voice from within the Ring disrupted Thaetum's thoughts, "Get me a mage! Quick! I can't control myself! Oh NO! I think I'm going to throw a lightning bolt right now! Get down!"

Thaetum's eyes grew wide with astonishment. He grabbed another dagger with his other hand. A talking rat!! He felt extremely, extremely uncomfortable all of a sudden, and blurted out the same words Eve had directed to him, "What is going on???"

((OOC: Ok Fluffy, i'll allow you to hurl one small lightning bolt if you want, and you can pick your target ;)  Whoever or whatever it hits won't be hurt or fried, it will just feel like a little mosquitoe bite ... and no, Mina is not within range ;) ))

Still keeping a tight hold of Yerun's hand, Cacunai stood uneasily as far as she could get from the circle and still be in sight of the rest. Manymeals she recognized as one of the original rats, though for the life of her she couldn't think why he was squealing about something or other... a lightning bolt. Damn. The second her brain processed this information, she backpedaled, draggin Yerun with her, and ducked behind the nearest tree.

((Who to throw the bolt at, who to throw the bolt at... *sigh* Why is Mina not here? :D ))

Manymeals started to spin around like a berserk, with his arms stretched out into the air. *Squuuuooooiiiiaaaarrrrllll!* - screamed the rat with the same crackly human voice. His silhouette started to glow, little sparks jumped from his hands in all directions. Strange buzzing sounds filled the air.

*Sqlaaaaaachh!* - Manymeals suddenly bumped into the feet of the little girl. He raised his head to warn her, but as he saw the girl, Manymeals forgot all the words. He retreated as fast as he could, waving with the arms and then he let go. The lightning bolt broke loose and flew towards Nalaere...

This was getting out of hand now. Eve looked around at Thaetum, hearing his blank reply...he was no help here. The warrioress watched the rat in the middle of the stones beginning to twirl about. She had never seen an animal act so human. Then it happened...a bolt flew from the rat's hands towards Nalaere. Eve wasn't quick enough to stop it, it happened too fast.

"Watch out!" that was all she could get out.

((OOC: Ok Fluffy, we'll just put the Ramblers and the other rats on hold for this post ... you can take a break until my next post ;) ))

*Sqlaaaaaachh!*

"Watch out!"

A flash of light emerged from Manymeals in the shape of a small dart, and struck the little girl squarely in the chest. The little girl's lips formed an astonished "O" as her knees buckled and she crumpled to the ground, a pale, small hand clutching the spot where the bolt had hit her.

Thaetum's jaw dropped in horror. As cold-hearted and stony-faced as he made himself out to be, children being hurt was not something he would put up with. He immediately stepped forth towards the little girl, his back towards Eve and the hiding Cacunai.

The little girl groaned softly, as she raised her head to meet Thaetum's concerned gaze, and her hand left her chest, dark blood started to trickle out from where her hand had clutched it. She opened her pale lips, and weakly, half-sobbingly stammered out, "He ... he ... he stabbed me ... he stabbed me ..."

Thaetum took a step back in horror, "What ... what are you talking about?! I did nothing!"

Yerun peered out from where Cacunai had dragged him to, his voice trembling as he recognized the dark, crimson liquid that was streaming out of the little girl's chest, "Sh..she ... she's hurt!" as he clutched Cacunai's sleeve in fear, one finger pointing towards the little girl and Thaetum.

Eve didn't know what to do...she wasn't a healer. She didn't meddle in magics. This was not her domain. But she was a forceful woman.

"He did not stab you child, that rat did that to you. It is possessed!" she shouted bringing her axes up to its fighting position.

The warrior's eyes then glanced at Cacunai. "Well...you are the elf, do you not know of any remedies to help her?"

Yes, I can help her. But I will not risk my life and the boy's for her. Everything I have heard, all the information I have gathered, points to the conclusion that this girl, if she is the Princess, is no longer what we would call human! If you can bring her to me, I can treat her.

Cacunai shook her head stubbornly. The girl was valuble, but not valuble enough to die for. Perhaps she was paranoid, but it had saved her life before. Like that time with the wolves. She had been right then. Of course, if she was wrong now, she would lose a lot of gold. Gold... her eyes lit up at the thought of it. But Yerun was young, and she felt she had to protect him... he was only a boy. Only a boy.

She kept a small part of her brain, and her eye, focused on Manymeals and the rats in general. Manymeals was still dangerous, potentially, but he couldn't be that dangerous.

OOC: Khi, you said MM's bolt would feel like a mosquito bite. What went wrong? Is it because the girl's a ghoulie?

@Nai, Eve & Fluffy:

Thaetum took a few more steps back, feeling a mixture of bewilderment and indignance, "I did not do anything! By Ava! She just ... she just ... bled!"

The little girl drooped her head, still clutching on tightly to the gushing wound that seemed to be growing ... no ... multiplying! Another wound had mysteriously appeared right next to the original one, a speedily booming crimson flower. The little girl had started crying piteously now, Thaetum's, Eve's and Cacunai's words seem lost to her, "He stabbed me ... he stabbed me ... he didn't want me to go home ... i can never go home ... he stabbed me ... he stabbed me ..."

Yerun suddenly cried out with a vivacity that startled even himself, "I remember!"

But at that very instant, the loud, burly voices of men sounded out, "By Coor! There are talking people here!" "The order was to kill all!" A few more loud grunts later, a group of men barged into the immediate surroundings, clad in the garb of the Royal Kyranian guards and wielding swords.

A stunned Thaetum took a gashing blow to his shoulder before holding off an attacking guard while another approached him menacingly. Two others charged for Eve, their swords raised high to deal out forceful blows. Two others surrounded Cacunai and Yerun, Cacunai's pointed ears spurring them to thrust their swords towards her, while two more hovered around the periphery, ready to go to the aid of any of their comrades who needed help.

Her elfen speed and agility aided her here, as well as her natural ability to think on her feet. Cacunai heard the shouts, and a split second before any guards had actually come into view, she had her blowpipe in her hand. Yerun, however, stood unprotected. She lunged at the first of her two guards, baring her teeth in a feral gesture, the way she hissed and moved like a cat. Feral's a nice thing to be.... Ahem. Cacunai feinted to the right, but the guard was not so daft. He stayed where he was, so she decided to carry through on that movement. Ducking a sword slash from the other guard, she flicked a tiny stone dagger from her belt and plunged it into the guard's unprotected underarm. A disagreeable place to attack, really, but that's where armor is weak! The guard gave a snort of disgust and raised his sword for a killing blow, then suddenly one arm drooped; the rest of him followed. The stone dagger had done its work in a matter of seconds (there was deadly poison on it). While Cacunai was preoccupied with this, the other guard had moved up behind her and slashed his sword sideways, aiming to cut across the small of her back. Cacunai spun, but did not have time to do anything other than suck in her stomach so the sword might not hit her full on, and pray to Oem. Just as she felt the first pain of cold metal slicing her skin (not deep, thankfully), she heard a gasp and looked up to see something in the guard's face twitch, then he slumped to the ground. Yerun stood behind him, staring down at the guard's limp body and clutching his little bone dirky-thing, now stained with blood. Cacunai gave a grim smile. She ignored the sharp pain for now. There were two more guards to be dealt with. Eve and Thaetum could take care of theirs easily enough, but the two around the perimeter of the circle were closing in. Now that she had time to prepare, she wasn't worried anymore. The two guards were throwing nervous looks at each other; they were rather afraid to enter the vicinity of the ring. However, they were in more danger where they were than in the stones! Cacunai turned her back and leaned against a nearby tree for a moment, pretending to be fiddling around with her injury, and while her hands could not be seen, she quickly fitted a dart to her blowpipe, then thought better of it and added another. She brought her blowpipe to her lips, turned, slowly (relatively, I mean the guards aren't tortises), and fired off the two darts at the two guards. One of them dropped like a stone, the other gave a roar of surprise and anger, and charged toward Thaetum, waving his sword wildly. Cacunai glanced down at her darts. Oops... she thought. That wasn't poison, that was stimulant. Now that guard will act like a mad bull on steroids. Oh well. She shrugged and smiled happily. She had never liked Thaetum... just then a twinge of pain from her war-wound (hehehehe...) caused her to look down and see the blood seeping from her stomach and staining her tunic. She made a little sound of concern and immediately retreated to her place by the tree and tore away her tunic to inspect the wound. She busily began taking various things from her belt and her pockets and attending to herself.

The warriorress was suprised that she had not heard the oncoming guards. Usually the clanking of their heavy metal would have caught her ears. But she was prepared, having her weapons already drawn. The two soldiers that ran at her should not be a problem to Eve, especially once she called upon Chaos.

The dark-skinned woman's eyes closed and her mind chanted briefly as the guards swung down at her. Both of her axes went up, her vital stats enhanced by her prayer. Her arms shook with the force of the blow as did the soldiers, but she remained steady. Her quick mind went to work as she saw that the soldiers were a bit disoriented. She raised her left axe and angled it towards the first soldier's leg. It hit his leather armor, but sliced deep enough into his leg to give him a gaping wound. He would be dealt with later.

The other soldier caught sight of this and swung again at Eve. She was not as quick as the first time, managing to escape with a bleeding gash across her cheek. She paid the wound no mind, being the true warrior that she was. Just then her berzerker rage set in...Chaos was overwhelming her. She swung her axe upwards at the soldier's chin and cut his face down the middle. It wasn't enough to cause his face to split in half, but it put him out of the game permanently; spewing blood onto her face.

She paid this no mind either, instead she went to the second soldier. A quick kick to his leg revealed that his pain was excruciating. He was still trying to be brave and swung his sword at the woman's middle. She dodged the slow and weak blow and countered it by swinging the blunt side of her axe at his hand. He dropped the weapon and balled his red fist. "Why have you come to attack us?"

At first he did not say anything. Eve sighed deeply, and stomped on his bleeding leg causing him to grimace. "Why have you attacked us? This is the last time I shall ask this of you," she said putting both of her axes to his neck in such a way that her wrists crossed forming an 'x'. By now the warrior had blood running from her cheek unto her padded top, but it could hardly be seem under the other soldier's blood.

(( :devilish  :devilish  :devilish  Burnt soil, you say... :evil  :evil  :evil  ))

Seeing the armed men appear out of the woods and attack Yerun and the others Manymeals fell into panic. He had to do something, to save the Big Ones from being killed and the rats from being turned into stew. He felt, he knew the powers in him were more than enough to stop the attackers, but he couldn't control them, and so they were of no use.

"I don't know who you are, but I need your help!" - Manymeals shouted to the spirit inside him: "I don't want my friends to die! These men are bad! I want  them to go!"
Suddenly a laughing voice arose from the deeps of his mind:
"Haha! Oh, and go they will, little rat!"

Manymeals felt that the spirit was taking over his body once again. "Just trust me," - said the voice. Manymeals tried to calm down and relax. A force inside drove him to the middle of the ring of stones. There Manymeals crossed his hands over his chest and started to sing a song in an old, long forgotten language.

Little flames appeared out of the ground around the high stones, slowly getting higher and higher. A cloud of smoke spread out inside the ring.  Manymeals soon disappeared inside it. The stones began to glow red and the runes written on them threw a bright light on the trees that surrounded the clearing.

The earth started to melt and split open, steam rose out of the splits with hissing sounds. Something strange and dangerous was happening on the clearing, a powerful magic flew through the air...

((Don't worry, Khi, I'm not going to burn down the whole forest. ;)  ))

((OOC: Fantastic posts all of you!! Should have had more combat scenes earlier on i suppose :p  Okie Fluffy, you should wrap up the spell in the next post, and keep it "local", ok? ;)  And then Manymeals does his *cough*fainting*cough* part ... ))

One by one the attacking guards became the attacked, and one by one they were downed. A wounded Thaetum grunted worriedly as the one remaining guard suddenly seem infused with a surge of inhuman energy, charging at him with flaring nostrils and bulging eyes, sword held high in the air aimed for a fatal strike at Thaetum. Just as the guard neared Thaetum, suddenly a crack appeared on the ground beneath him, and one foot slipped into the crack. Thaetum took the opportunity to deliver a forceful slash to the guard's neck.

"Why have you attacked us? This is the last time I shall ask this of you,"

The soldier that laid prostrate on the ground in front of Eve had lost all his bravado. The excruciating pain caused him to whimper like a boy. He didn't like what was happening around him either. Cracks were appearing in the ground, strange lights all around ... all he wanted was to get out alive while he still could. "The ... the prince ... gave orders ... to burn the woods, and ... and kill anyone and everyone within it ... i ... i was just following orders ... please ..." He started to plea piteously for his life.

Eve was disturbed by the sudden changes in the earth. She looked over to Nai, if this was something magical the elf should be able to sense what was going on. Her eyes trailed back to the fallen warrior.

"I cannot kill you for simply doing your job, but I will not help you tend to your wound. If you happen to die here, whether the woods get to you before this cursed place does that is not my concern."

She walked away from him and then went back to him. "Wait." Her axe went down in between his legs, the sharp edge aimed at his crotch. "Why would the prince do that? If you value your family jewels I suggest you answer me."

Cacunai sucked in a sharp breath as the flames started to lick at the circle of stones, and she drew back even further from them. Right, this had gone far enough. She grasped a low branch of her tree and swung up, climbing up until she would be about head-level with an average human. She perched comfortably on the twisted wood, her muscles tense, ready to fight or fire [her blowpipe] from above. She returned Eve's glance with a shrug. Apart from the obvious magic, there was nothing amiss.

If Yerun cared to join Cacunai in the tree, he could climb himself or ask for a hand....

The cloud of smoke was slowly spreading out across the clearing. The ground got hot and only shoes saved those who stood on it from burning their feet.

Suddenly the clearing trembled. A large and deep crack appeared in the middle of the stone ring where Manymeals was singing his strange old song some moments ago. Inside it the fires raged, raising their tongues up to the sky.

"GRRROARRRRRR!" - a terrible roar came out of the crack with such a tremendous force that the trees bowed. The ground trembled again, much stronger this time, and the smoke became so dense that nothing could be seen through it anymore.

@Eve, Nai, Fluffy, Kiu, Ryl & Mina:

((OOC: As with my last post, some details will be just lightly brushed over to avoid this post from becoming a lengthy sprawl of words that is hard on the eyes ... it'll be a little easier to post specifically to each of you once we get everyone's positions, actions etc. straightened out :) ))

"Why would the prince do that? If you value your family jewels I suggest you answer me."

The battered guard whimpered at the proximity of her axe blade, the only thing keeping him from fainting was the fear that he would faint forward and ... "Mercy! Mercy, warrioress! I don't know! I don't know! They..they say that the Prince has a dark secret within these woods that he doesn't want anyone to find out about ... but ... but i don't know! Mercy!"

The sudden sparks of flame against the backdrop of night was an eerie spectacle. Yerun hugged tightly in fear against the trunk of the tree that Cacunai was perched atop off, unable to shimmy up himself. For the guard, the blood-curdling roar was the last straw. Thankfully -- for his next generation -- he fainted backwards and went out cold as his head hit the ground.

A burst of arid steam propelled a still spinning, still yodelling Manymeals out of the Ring, and with a tumble and a remarkably human howl, landed right at Eve's boot, unconscious and out cold on on his back.

With a knockedout Manymeals, the earth began to shudder slightly again, and the cracks in the ground hesitantly, but slowly sealed themselves up, and soon the only remaining trace of sorcery was a whiff of smoke spiralling behind the Stones, languishing ominously ...

The loud padding of feet broke the eerie silence that ensued. A crackly, aged voice rang out, "By the Grace of Ava!"

Caradol stepped into the immediate visual vicinity of Eve, Cacunai, the Ramblers, and a wide-eyed, shuddering Yerun, helped along by Mina. The figures of Ryldor, and then Kiushapo supporting a limping Elric followed. A faint whine could be heard from the Stones themselves, as if the presence of Caradol instilled a fear or some other wary sentiment in them. The rats huddled close against each other, staying as far away as they could from the little girl who was now crumpled motionless besides the Stones.

The subsequent actions and exclamations were simualtaneous.

A look of puzzlement and thinly veiled horror grasp Caradol's wizened face, "That ... is ... the Princess! But, it cannot be!" He made his way cautiously towards the limp figure of the little girl, Mina following in tow.

Elric suddenly gripped Kiushapo's forearm tightly, pointing up to the figure of Cacunai in the branches above him, "A hidden fiend amidst the treetops! Strike before we are struck!" Elric's weary eyes looking pointedly at the bloodied axes of a stern-faced Eve.

Yerun, in an attempt to stop Kiushapo or Elric from harming Cacunai, moved forth with an urgent look on his face, clumsily bumping into Ryldor.

((OOC: A post from each of you, then some revelation, and then some more doom and burning and what not, and making our getaway :devilish  And then it's time to wrap up and let the credits roll! ;)  ))

You would die before your stroke fell, little man, Cacunai hissed venomously from her tree. She leered down at Elric with the most intimidating and slightly deranged grin she could muster. After a moment of careful thought, she slid down the trunk and alighted at the base of her tree, where she stepped forward to take Yerun's hand protectively.

I am no dark elf, and if you try to harm me or this boy, you will not see tomorrow.

Because everything around her was so chaotic, she had closed her mind, at least the frontal bit of it, to everything except immediate concerns. The rest of the action would be filed away in her memory until such time as she needed it; then it would be readily available in somewhat vague outlines. But good enough. But she hadn't time to waste now on trivial things like yodeling rats! (hehehe)

Eve was contempt with the man's answer to her threat. She removed her blades from his crotch and walked away from him, not caring for any of his wounds. He would have to fend for himself; something else caught her eyes. The rat was thrown from the ring faster than Eve could actually process the action. It landed with a thud at the base of her boots and she kneeled down to pick it up.

"What trickery is this?" as she asked the question the earth seemed to heal and Eve grunted uncomfortably. "Thaetum?!" she shouted looking around frantically for the man. She knew she should have fought with him against the guards, but she had to get answers. If they man died she would not be able to forgive herself.

"By the Grace of Ava!"

That voice brought chills to Eve's spine. She looked at the center of the ring only catching a wisp of smoke traveling from the center around the stones. Her eyes went up to Cacunai and then to Yerun to make sure they were alright. Then the others appeared. The woman and the man she recognized from the market place but the other two beings were new to her.

Eve said nothing to them, she leaned against a tree briefly and pulled out a rag from her pouch to cleanse her blades of the drying blood. "What are you doing here, and what concern is it of yours that this is the princess? She is just a child, she needs a healer..."

As Mina and Caradol arrived at the Ring of Stones, she saw that another group of people had arrived before they did.  They had run into some Guards too, it seemed, judging from the bodies lying on the ground.  Looking around, she spotted Thaetum among the group.  Oh dear, I hope he doesn't recognise me from the village center. She then noticed the figure of a little girl lying by the stones.

"That ... is ... the Princess! But, it cannot be!"

"Ah, the princess!" Mina exclaimed, "What has happened to  her?"

She wondered if she should go over to the princess to help her.  There was much sorcery involved with the Ring, and she did not know if it was safe to approach it.  "What should we do?" she asked Caradol.

"It's no trickery!" - said Manymeals to Eve who was holding him in her hand: "Someone interrupted my ma-gick! And my fur is burned!"

Ramblers and the other rats meanwhile disappeared from sight in the bushes. Too many Big Ones around. Too many dangers. It was wiser to wait and see what happens from distance.

Elric huffed. And puffed. Kind of ... breathlessly. Little man?? Who was the elf calling "Little man"??? But at least this elf did not have the odd violet tinge and glowing violet eyes. And she seemed protective and kindly of the young boy, who was now holding her hand tightly in relief, and staying as close to her as possible, timidly peering at Elric and Kiushapo. Elric opened his mouth to speak, but his breath left him again, and he found himself grappling on to Kiushapo for support, directing a subtle seething glance at the elf for not speaking up in support of him.

A heckling cough caught Eve's attention as she cleansed the dark crimson streaks off her blade. The battered, ash-covered figure of Thaetum emerged from amongst a few strands of stray wispy smoke, "Hold yer breeches lady ... i'll still be alive even if i have to take down these woods with me!" It was an exaggeration of course, but at times like these, it was exactly what a battered male pride needed. Narrowing his eyes at the sudden group of newcomers, Thaetum decided to let Eve call the shots -- she had proven herself. Spectacularly. Gruffly, he asked Eve in an acquiescing tone, "And who are those here lovely people?"

((OOC: Kiushapo should probably make a response to both Cacunai and Eve's question ... you are the PR guy, so, do your stuff :wink2  Fluffy, feel free to clarify or confuse the situation for everyone around there hehe ... "Ah, the princess! What has happened to her? What should we do?"

Caradol seemed a little taken aback by their discovery of the little girl, who he recognized as the Princess ... or was it?

The little girl -- Princess Nalaere -- slowly raised her head, her body seemed as frail as ever, the gaping wounds in her chest seem to be slowly multiplying, staining her dress a deep crimson, seeping into a puddle on the ground beneath her.

"Caradol? Why didn't you come back for me? He left me here ... he stabbed me ... why didn't you come back for me? I want to go home, Caradol, I want to go home ..." She was pleading, her voice full of sorrow, and in her eyes, there was a confused and mournful glint, as if there was something that she did not understand.

Caradol's face paled considerably, and in that instant, he seemed to have aged another hundred years. Taking a step backwards, closer towards Mina, wearily, he spoke, to no one in particular, a voice full of regret and deep sadness, "I'm sorry, my child, i'm sorry ..." Casting a quick glance at the Ring, he proceeded to answer Mina's question, as the figure of Princess Nalaere seem to be -- was it possible??? -- shimmering, its outline growing foggy and fuzzy. "That is ... no longer the Princess, my child. It is as i have feared. The Princess disappeared when she was a mere 11 years old, Nalaere should be a young woman of 18 now. And she would, she would, but alas ..."

Caradol told all of the lore of the Ring of Stones (please read the Shivering Woods entry on the main site for the story if you haven't already ... it's kind of silly to type it out all here in a story post). The strange markings on the stones around the Ring had ceased to glow. "And so, pursuing immortality, the Silver Hand did obtain their target of desire. They found immortality, their essence ... or some call it souls, forever bound to the Stones of their sorcery, one for each member of the Silver Hand, immortal till the end of time."

((OOC: Alrighty people, this is a mystery afterall -- besides responding to other people/actions around you, your next post should be of your character attempting to try to work out the mystery, based on what you know/found out so far, and speak out your character's thoughts/take on what really happened to the group/Caradol. "And who are those here lovely people?"

Eve said nothing to Thaetum at first, something more intriguing had caught her attention. The elf Caradol was speaking to the girl. They seemed to know one another. Eve had to pay attention to this. She set the rat back down on the ground, letting its friend-rats take care of it.

"The Silver Hand?" Eve asked softly. Those are the sorcerers whose stones she was seeking when she first began this trip. She knew everything about them, but what did they have to do with Nalaere. "I do not understand, how is the princess connected to this? Is she a sorceress, or was she the sacrifice they needed to acheive immortality?"

Mina listened carefully as Caradol related to them the lore of  the Ring of Stones.  She had read about it before, back at the Academy, but no longer remembered most of the details.  At the same time, she wondered what it had to do with the princess, trying to piece together the solution to the mystery.

When the old mage was finally done, she said, "I suppose then, that the prince had lured the princess here and somehow managed to trap her within the ring?"  But what about those wounds?  "Or perhaps the prince did kill her, but her soul became trapped within the ring.  Is that what happened?"

She searched her mind for any knowledge that might help free the princess, but nothing she could remember was of any use.  Finally, she turned back to Caradol and asked, "So, is there any way we could free her?"

Finally tiring of holding Elric up, Kiushapo gently led the recovering soldier to a nearby tree to lean against. Though the axe wielding woman had asked him a question, the time to answer it seemed to have passed as her attention turned to other things. Thaetum was there as well, seeming to have eluded the guards for this long and as welcoming as ever. Whatever this place was, it seemed it was a gathering place as well.

The object of their quest seemed to have been found, though looking at her, the princess seemed not to have aged at all. Caradol confirmed that something was amiss with her age, but threw around terms about the Silver Hand which he had never heard of. All in all he was thoroughly lost and turned back to Elric.

"I am hoping you can be telling me what is going on, things are seeming very strange and if there is being evil magic going on here I am wanting no part of it."

"I am hoping you can be telling me what is going on, things are seeming very strange and if there is being evil magic going on here I am wanting no part of it."

Elric grunted as he leaned against the tree. He was beginning to regain some strength, and the wobbly feeling in his legs had begun to rescind. He could sense the disturbed sentiment in Kiushapo, and Elric too grappled the hilt of his sword, feeling very edgy. Elric had his eyes trained on the figure of the little girl and Caradol. He had never seen the Princess with his own eyes before, but a dreadfully eerie feeling inside of him told him that this was she. As Kiushapo spoke to him, Elric hushed the blonde elf, as Caradol began to speak again, straining to listen to the words from Caradol.

"I do not understand, how is the princess connected to this? Is she a sorceress, or was she the sacrifice they needed to acheive immortality?"

" ... Or perhaps the prince did kill her, but her soul became trapped within the ring. Is that what happened? ... So, is there any way we could free her?"

Caradol looked mournfully from one woman to the other, as the words came tumbling out, "Yes, she was sacrificed, in the name of rivalry for the throne! It is bloodshed in its utter most disdainful form!" Caradol was weary, very weary, and his wavering voice reflected the heavy-heartedness in his words, "Seven years ago, i had accompanied the Prince and the Princess to Eresh, on her 11th birthday. Somehow the Prince had managed to convince King Aprag to allow him to lead the Princess into the Shivering Woods on a royal hunt, a great adventure, he said, worthy of the birthday gift of a royal Princess. I should never have allowed the entourage to enter the woods without me, but the Prince, he had it planned all along ..." Caradol's wizened features sagged, " ... and kept me well occupied while they made their way into the woods." He looked forlornly at the slowly fading figure of a writhing Princess Nalaere, her being now resembling a ghostly outline, "He did the deed himself, that, i am now certain. Alas, he is the bane of the Kyranian line, as prophesized by Arvins' curse!"

Caradol tossed his staff aside in grief, burying his face in his hands, "I should have returned to the woods that fateful day! I should not have taken his words for the tragedy! But it took me years ... years! Years to uncover this dark deed!" He paused, drawing in a deep sigh, "And i'm afraid, that her soul is forever trapped within the sorcery of the Stone ... oh, my child, he must have fatally wounded you at this very spot! I know not of how to undo the sorcery of these Stones, their power is beyond me ... i'm sorry, my child, i know not how to take you home ..."

Loud cries of chaos suddenly filled the air. Elric had his sword whipped out of its scabbard in a flash, eyeing their surroundings nervously.

Caradol turned in alarm, and it was at that very instant, an arrow sliced through the air, and in and through Caradol. He had been forever silenced, his aged body falling to the ground, besides the disintegrating ghostly figure of Nalaere with a sad, pained expression in her gleaming eyes.

Elric exclaimed in alarm, as the cries and commotion grew louder. It sounded like an army was approaching. The heat in the air had began to swell as well, the smell of burning was rife and thick in the air.

As the cries grew more distinct, muffled words of the shouting could be discerned, a mixture of the Tharian tongue and of the odd accented Styrash of the dark elves of the woods. It seemed that a fierce battle had begun, but no one could tell who was losing or winning, in their current location.

More arrows staked the ground, narrowly missing Mina, Cacunai, Yerun's sleeve, Thaetum's thigh and one of Elric's extended foot. To stay immobile would certainly be placing themselves in certain death, and yet, the odds were not looking too bright either for a safe escape. But the longer they waited, the darker the sky grew, and the closer the battle would reach on to them.

Elric shouted, "RUN FOR IT!"

Alright, each of you, choose a direction: North, East, South, or West, to escape. To stay means death. The sounds and cries of chaos are heard from all directions. You can choose to escape individually, in twos, threes, or as a big group ... but one of you has to take the lead and start running in a direction :devilish  The story will be wrapping up in the next two posts (from the players) or so, depending on what you guys do ... then there will be a special "Ending Credits" post ... but that's for later ... for now ... Cacunai listened quietly to the conversation between all her fellow princess-seekers, thinking to herself, So, the Prince betrayed his sister and worked his dark magic with her life. Where then did he go? If the girl has endured, her brother may yet still be here. She was killed for a reason. And I know why. She had only the others' conversation to work with as she knew nothing of this town or this mystery until she had stepped through its gates and heard the rumors. Her elf ears twitched. She turned her head, slowly, to catch the sound again. There... it was a blood sound, a death sound, and she knew that there was conflict approaching. A minute later, everyone else caught the sound, then without warning a deadly arrow came whipping out of the trees, only to plunge directly into Caradol's chest. Cacunai threw herself into a low crouch to avoid any stray arrows, yanking Yerun down beside her.

Ware arrows, she shouted, ware arrows!Though she knew it was largely pointless as it was pretty obvious Caradol had just been killed with an arrow, she issued her warning anyway just in case one of them had not heard, or seen.

The group had scattered into disarray, and Cacunai knew that there was safety in numbers, but there was also danger. Alone, she would escape silent and unheeded. With the boy, they would still have a chance. However if they were to all run together in a clump, the noise and the movement would attract even the most idiotic of soldiers. With only a few short moments to make a decision, she made it. Due West darted the elf, with only a lingering word of command to Yerun, Follow....

It was finally beginning to make sense. If Eve ever crossed the Prince's path again she would skewer him for how low he had stooped. She was about to speak up again when suddenly she was caught off guard by something else.

"RUN FOR IT!"

It began so quickly. The arrows flying, the smoke in the air, the smell of fire, the smell of blood. Eve knew all too well when to fight and when to run. Now was the time to run. She turned on her heels, throwing her rag on the ground and easily latched her axes to her sides. She took off with the speed of an agile doe, running across the grass and fallen logs as though she was born to do so. She didn't know which direction she had headed until she stopped and looked around. She was running East and fast.

Then her memory reminded her of someone. Thaetum. She left him alone. He was old...he might not be able to escape the spray of arrows. Eve couldn't go back though, the sound was growing louder now. They had probably already overtaken the man. Eve sighed and ran on as fast as she could.

"Chaos, I call upon you to guide my feet with your hands, guide my eyes with your power," she chanted. Suddenly she began to sprint and zoomed faster than she started.

It was all a mess. There was no ratty paradise in the woods, there were no mountains of cheese, there was no joy and no happiness. There were owls though and there were bears. And there was a lot of Big Ones discussing things too complicated for a rat.

And then there were suddenly arrows in the air. Arrows the Ramblers already had seen before, that meant they were in trouble. One of the Big Ones shouted and all of them run away from the hidden attackers.

The elf-woman, Cacunai, grabbed Yerun and dissapeared between the trees. The rats were left alone.
"Where did they go?" - they chittered: "There?"
"No there!"
"There!"
"Where?"
Finally, the rats remembered they could sniff the ground.
"There! I told you they went that way" - and they headed west, after the both Big Ones.

@Cacunai & Fluffy:

Yerun's expression froze into that of sheer horror as he watched the old mage downed by a sudden arrow. Just like that. He was dead. Memories flashed through his mind ... his father, his mother ... just like that. They were dead.

The floodgate of tears rushed open and down they streamed onto Yerun's cheek. He was oblivious to the hail of arrows falling upon them, and if not for Cacunai's sudden command, Yerun would have been yet another casualty staked to the ground.

"Follow...."

Disoriented and full of grief, Yerun's legs took over as they trailed clumsily behind Cacunai, his tear-stained face whipped and struck by stray branches as both the elf and the young boy dodged madly among the trees. The smell of smoke seemed to have lightened as they trampled through the thickets of brush and Larkentir, but sounds of fighting were all around them, and then --

"AAHHH!!!"

A shrill shout from Yerun made Cacunai turn back in concern, halting their mad rush. There was Yerun, crouching on the ground, holding one foot in pain. He had stumbled over, what appeared to be the decapitated body of a Kyranian guard. Pale-faced with shock, Yerun sat motionless on the ground, clutching his ankle with a slight shudder. There was sharp pain in his ankle, and he could not muster himself to stand up again.

A volley of rats suddenly leapt out from a cluster of brush, and, unable to stop their momentum in time, pummeled straight into the dead body of the guard.

@Eve:

((Going to do a little puppeting here ... just a little ;) ))

The warrior woman sprinted due East, with amazing speed and agility. Chaotic cries all abound, the warrior woman seemed like she could run on tirelessly until she reached the edge of the woods, until the thick cloud of smoke started clogging up her lungs, and she was forced to gradually slow down her pace, to prevent herself from choking and fainting from the fog of ash heavy in the air.

Suddenly, a group of Kyranian guards and dark elves rushed fiercely onto her path, weapons clashing at each other's throats. It was clear that the dark elves seemed to be in Victory's favour, but many were wounded, and many fell in the ensuing battle. Nimbly ducking out of harm's way right in time, Eve decided to let their mindless slaughter finish them off, and she would take up her escape again when they were all downed, crouching behind a thick stout shrub.

Suddenly, a loud THUMP struck her side. It was the fallen body of a male dark elf, his face bloodied and scarred, a dagger pierced through the right of his chest. His eyes widened at Eve, weak words spilling out of his bloodied lips, a half sneer forming on his face, "Ah ... tis you ... human woman ... you ... survived ..."

The voice was unmistakable. Eve recognized it from her earlier encounter in the woods. The still fresh arrow wound on her shoulder made sure that she would never forget.

Hold me.
Soothe me.
Love me.

Save me from my RAGE.

Loud cries were heard just as Caradol finished speaking.  It seemed to Mina that a large group of people were coming.  An instant later, Caradol was struck by an arrow and fell to the ground.

"Caradol!" Mina exclaimed.  Before she had time to do anything else though, more arrows appeared, one of them coming dangerously close to her, missing her sleeve by barely a nailsbreadth.  A quick flick of her wrist generated a blast of wind that knocked a few other arrows out of the air.  Still, more arrows were coming, and the fighting would soon reach them.  Staying around was obviously a bad idea.  I don't even have time to cast a proper spell.

"RUN FOR IT!"

Mina turned and ran as fast as she could.  She did not particularly care which direction she was going, as long as she made it out alive.  Ahead of her, she spotted the warrior woman, sprinting ahead more quickly than she thought possible, especially with the axes she was carrying.  I guess I should have exercised more often.

"Ah ... tis you ... human woman ... you ... survived ..."

Eve gazed at the elf momentarily before snarling and pushing his body off of her own and onto the ground besides the place where she was knocked down. She looked down at her arm, remembering the nice gift he had given her.

"Yes I have, and it looks as though you will not..." Eve looked around nervously. It seemed that the fighting was still carrying on, but no one had noticed her or the male elf.

She had time for a few questions before making a quick dash out of the woods. She coughed momentarily, the smoke filling her lungs. "How did this battle begin...?" she asked, kneeling at the man's side.

Listening to Caradol's words, Kiushapo lowered his head and offered a small prayer of passing for the girl. His knowledge didn't extend to magic and if Caradol didn't know what to do, he certainly didn't. It seemed like this was the end of the line...

The sound of arrows flying through the air disrupted the rest of his thoughts, and as Caradol fell the ground his reflexes kicked into action. He didn't care about the mystery so much as getting out of this alive now.

Not bothering with his swords, he ducked low and threw Elric over his shoulder as he passed, not having time to help him hobble along with his foot wound. Breaking into a sprint he headed west, towards the sea, running a straight course and hoping his luck held out just a little longer.

Cacunai skidded to a stop as she heard Yerun cry out, and stared for a moment at the downed boy, before a crowd of rats barreled out of the trees and into the dead man.

Yerun, no! I can't carry you, boy!

The ratty crow bumped into a man, who was laying on the ground. *Squoww!* - said the rats.
The man said nothing.
"I think he's dead," - said one of the younger rats and sniffed the air.
"Oh no," - responded Fuzzytail from the middle of the crowd: "He's just resting here and waiting for someone to bring him his head back."
"But what if he wakes up? He will try to catch us!"
"Don't worry. To catch us he will need to see us first. And that's kinda hard if your head is not on your shoulders."
The young rat gave Fuzzytail a puzzled look but said nothing.
The crowd climbed over the guard's body and gathered around Cacunai who tried to lift up crying Yerun.

((OOC: Hm, I'm glad the story is over soon. My rats start talking almost like me. Brrr... that's no good :rolleyes ))

Yerun, no! I can't carry you, boy!

Dashing through the forest, Kiushapo almost couldn't stop himself in time to avoid tripping over the corpse of a soldier and joining the small boy that seemed to already done that.

Looking around for the source of the voice, he found it with the woman Elric had accused of trying to attack the group back at the ring of stones. With no time to work anything out, he hefted Elric off his shoulder and foisted him on her.

"He can be walking if you are supporting him! Go!"

Scooping the boy into his arms, he set off again, slower this time to keep the woman and Elric in sight.

A little confused with the swapping of charges, Cacunai shrugged and savagely gripped Elric around his waist, and followed Kiu at a swift lope, wondering why he was going so slowly. It's not like Cacunai cared if Elric got dragged around a bit. She hissed happily, making an effort to sound as deranged as possible, Well well, now you're all alone with the evil elf from the Shivering Woods, who doubtless will stab you in your sleep tonight. Come, little man, walk faster or be left behind! She snickered and turned back to face front, ducking a branch. She turned back to check on the rats once, and saw they were doing all right. Hehehe... blame her for the Dark Elves' misdeeds, would he? Ha! She would make him regret it, but no, she wouldn't kill him. She wasn't that sort... not quite....

@Nai, Kiu & Fluffy:

Yerun gave a cry of surprise as a tall blonde elf loomed over him and subsequently scooped him into his arms. Yerun whimpered as his twisted ankle throbbed with stabs of pain, but he clung on tightly to Kiushapo as Kiushapo strode ahead.

"He can be walking if you are supporting him! Go!"

Elric grunted as he felt Cacunai's slender arms around him in support. Great. Of all the humans and elves in the world, he was now at the mercy at one whom he declared a "fiend". That would explain the threatening look on Cacunai's face, and her thick, silent glee whenever his limp caused him to bump into a sturdy shrub or rock on their way. He hoped that it would not be long before they were out of these cursed woods.

And it was not a moment too soon that Kiushapo and Cacunai started fleeing. Arrows rained down in a random manner, and one would have claimed that it was by Arvins' grace that Kiushapo, Cacunai, Elric and Yerun had dodged through the woods doggedly unscathed.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity of branch scratches and bush encounters, they had reached the edge of the woods. Elric grunted again, this time with relief, but that soon turned to a wide-gape of alarm.

The four screeched to a sudden halt as they left the woods, and straight into a row of armed men on horseback, clad in full battle regalia. Their shields and flags had the emblem with a flying horse on it, and the men were equally surprised to see the four emerge from the woods, staring at them warily, in astonished silence.

Ok you three, this is sort of the end post ... kind of the last surprise *grin*. After a post from each of you (make it "end-postie" ... you know ... heh ... :wink2 ), you'll all be written into the "End Credits" post ... :)

Cacunai fetched up at the edge of the woods and gaped with part astonishment, part fear, and part anger, at the assortment of guards. She was mostly angry at herself, for running helter-skelter through the woods without stopping to find a place to sit down and formulate a plan. As it was, they had no chance of passing themselves off as anything but ragged travelers running out of the woods for Elath-knows-what-reason. Plus her face was known now to at least, what, ten? twenty? guards and that was exactly what she had been trying to avoid! Only long habit made her scan the guards' horses to be sure none of them was Daala. None of them was. Cacunai (I'm really starting to hate her name) instantly dropped Elric and reached for her blowpipe. She had the presence of mind not to draw it, at least. This little adventure had taken to much of her time to be without reward. A wild thought came to her and she grinned with wry agreement. What if we killed all the guards and took their horses? The poor beasts would be a marvelous addition to my Daala, no matter how many there are. Or you could always sell the rest. Sad, but true. More likely the guards would cart them off to prison. What an anti-climax.

Skidding to halt, all he saw at first were the guards swords, bending swiftly half set, half dropped the boy to the ground and drew his longsword, setting into his fighting stance.

As he waited for the guards to attack, his eyes caught the emblem on their shields. They weren't the same as the guards he had run into in town, and they didn't seem like they had expected a fight....

Lowering his sword slightly, he nodded curtly to the men "I am not knowing who you are, but battle is raging behind us and if you are stopping us from leaving, then I would be asking you get off your horses so I am having a chance to save my companions at least."

@Kiushapo, Cacunai & Fluffy:

The sound of metal was rife in the air as the guards on horseback drew their weapons as well with the very flash of Kiushapo's sword.

And it was then that Elric yelled out frantically, almost deafening Cacunai in the process, "H..hold your sword Kiushapo! They are the Centoraurian Calvary!" Loooking around, slightly breathless, Elric held up both hands to indicate that they had no intention of posing any threat to the Centoraurian guards, "We must have crossed over the border between Kyrania and Centorauria."

A guard on horseback steered his steed slightly forward from the rest, "Our scouts picked up a massive movement of Kyranian troops, and then signs of fire was spotted within the Shivering Woods. What in Ava's name is happening, Kyranian?" He demanded an answer, as his eyes glanced at the two elves and a frightened Yerun. He knew of the dark elves of the Shivering Woods, but Kiushapo and Cacunai did not share the features of the dark ones.

Elric sighed. The events of the past half hour flashed through his mind. He still could not fully bring himself to accept the old mage's words. And now even he himself -- the old mage -- was dead. Who would attest to the truth now? Elric suddenly felt extremely weary, like he had aged 50 years in the past half hour. What had he been working so hard for, for the past years? Serving a kingdom that rotted at its core ... and where was his Arialle, his beloved? All he wanted to do right now was to hold her, and leave this wretched, forsaken place, and all its memories ...

Elric's shoulders sagged as he trudged forward towards the Centoraurian guards, a calm, yet defeated and resigned expression on his face. "I ... will explain all ..."

At this point, all i need is to write up the end credits to wrap everything up ... as well as the full explanation of the whole story. Of course, the story can still go on at this point, but since this was primarily meant to be a mystery, and now the mystery has been revealed, i really haven't had any plans to carry it on ... anyways, i need to finish up with Mina and Eve, and then you guys will get to see the whole picture in the End Credits post ... plus some other stuff ;)

Kiushapo, Cacunai and Fluffy ... you've all COMPLETED The Tale of Nalaere! :D  Awesome job!!!! :number1  More in the End Credits! :D
