Title: Chapter 1: Whispering Rumors
Post by: SeverineHalo on July 24, 2003, 03:08:22 AM
Severine sat by himself in the corner of a tavern. It has been a day since he and Tierria were in the city of Dasai...the city of soldiers. It also has been a day since he found out that the girl got to the city before he did. The two argued for sometime, but he knew he couldn't send her all the way back to Uderza. not with all the dangers going around and everything. He was disappointed in her, but he might as well as accept that the two of them was going to be traveling together for a long time. Right now, the girl was walking around the city.

She might be of some use with her healing skills, Severine thought to himself.

Another thing Severine thought of, was how he was going to make some money. He could become a mercenary like many warriors in Caeleteth, and if there was any place that had work, it would be Dasai. He could even uncover some information about the fire eight years ago...

Brushing his long braids from infront of his face, Severine sighed. He knew it was a long shot even hearing about the incident itself around these parts. There was no way that-

"Remember that fire years back?"

Severine's eyes darted over to a group of two cloaked figures, sitting at a nearby table. Close enough for Severine to hear most of their conversation. He couldn't make out their faces, only their brown cloaks were visible to the untrained eye. As Severine listened closely, he didn't get all of their conversation...only some of it.

"...She was around that area...she had to be. We did hear about a woman resembling a kasumarri female around the Rahaz-Dath desert...

"...They say that nobody survived that fire. I could've sworn I saw her in the distance when we were there. I wouldn't be surprised if she was the cause of it..."

"...There has to be a link between her and that assassin we keep hearing about. I think the name is The Ivory Fox? Only a kasumarri or someone trained under oen could've done the things we've heard about..."

The Ivory Fox? Severine thought to himself.

He didn't want to make himself known, so he decided to listen a little longer. But he couldn't make out any more of what they were saying. The two figures then left their table, and went upstairs. Perhaps they were going to their rooms. He would have to ask to innkeeper who those two people were. Making his way over to the counter pass the card games and and loud conversations, Severine came up to the innkeeper.

"Excuse me" he said. "Those two people in the brown cloaks. Can you please tell me who they are?"

The innkeeper shrugged. "Don't know exactly. They didn't really give a name...just put their money down, and ordered for a room. Don't really care though...as long as they don't make no trouble. I rather not know who they are actually. Unfortunately for me, I have the privilege of knowing the trouble makers well. If you want, I can tell you what room they're in. Just don't give me no trouble, you hear?"

Severine nodded. "I just wish to speak to them, that's all."

Tierria walked around the city of Dasai, to get a breath of fresh air out of that cramped tavern. Being in an area filled with men gawking at you wasn't her idea of a good time. Going past the houses of old and new, Tierria took a good look at the sea, which was filled with sailboats going in and out of the harbor.

"This is a beautiful place" the girl said to herself.

This place probably also had good night views, which would add up to a romantic situation. Too bad Severine was usually asleep when she wanted to go out at night. She started thinking back to when the two were arguing in the room she ordered before him. She wanted to go with him to travel the world. She too wanted to see the world for what it was. Uderza was a nice place, but not everbody wanted to live in the same place all their life. Was Severine concerned for her safety? Of course he was. Was Severine concerend for her because he loved her? As a friend without a doubt...but as more...she always wondered. To her, that boy would always be a mystery no matter what. And those braids of his covering his eyes when he thinks doesn't help either. But of course he would never admit that he needed her. She had no problem to admit that she needed him though. She would be damned if she was left alone in this world...without him. By the power of Seyella, she would help him in any way possible.

Severine was lying in his bed, staring up at the ceiling. He talked with the innkeeper some more, and learned that the cloaked figures would stay here for one more day. That gave him some time to think about how he would approach them.

As his mind drifted back and forth, the scene with the tent bruning began playing back into his mind. He could still feel the ehat emitting from the flames...he could still here the yells and screams coming from those watching. He could still feel the random feelings that was going through his body while being only helpless to do anything. His father...his mother...his aunts...uncle...and cousins...they were all killed. All seven of his family members. And he was helpless to do anything.

Sitting up in his bed, Severine stared at the wall. Evening was drawing close, and Tierria would return soon. Severine began tying his hair back, only letting a few braids fall infront of his handsome face. He found it funny that some of the local drunks thought he was a woman at times, and tried flirting with him. Maybe he'll be entertained that way...at least that would get his mind off certain things until Tierria came back. He would tell her what he would do, and then talk to the two mysterious people.

Phiona stepped into the busy inn with a sigh of relief.  She eased into a chair at what looked like the only empty table in the place, setting her bundles and an unstrung bow on the floor near her feet.

Although tired, she did not regret her day.  It had been amazing and very informative; hours spent wandering the old fortress of the Rahaz-Dath Mercenaries- she was most impressed with the Archery Division and it made her want to bring up her skill in the long bow- and Phiona was very glad she'd brought her journal and scribing materials along so she could take various notes.  Tomorrow, she'd need to go again so she could make some adjustments to the maps in her atlas- what a wealth of maps they had on display in that museum!  It was enough to make her smile again, just thinking back on it.

After the museum, Phiona went by the market place and bought some supplies, hence the many bundles on the floor, and sampled some of the folk cuisine.  Dasai, flanked as it was between a sea of water and a sea of sand, had some of the tastiest, grilled and spiced fish, served in a convenient wrap of thinly baked bread so one could walk and eat at the same time.  Sun-dried fruit was also a favorite-  oh!  the variety- and these stall were always the first to sell out in a day.  Washed down with iced wine the market place was surely worth visiting just for the food alone!

She then visited a number of weapons-shops and in one, she had to break down and buy the bow that now rested against her leg, unstrung.  It was the finest workmanship she ever seen, elegantly carved of a wood she could not name, for it was imported form some distant, elven forest.  There was a stylized 'V' etched in just above the leather-wrapped handle, along with the name 'Sagitari'.  Although the twelve Smithees of Dasai usually dealt  in forged weapons, some had long ago branched out to weapons constructed of wood.  She admired the curve of the longbow, grateful that they did.

Phiona looked up to the innkeeper and saw he was currently engaged with a young man who was tall, with long black braids and dark skin; she wondered why he didn't catch her attention the moment she walked into the room.  She waited until she caught the eye of the innkeeper and she raised her hand to indicate a reorder of the same drink she always had while staying here these last three days- a mulled red wine, lightly spiced.  Then Phiona turned back to evaluate her new bow some more.

Sometime later, when the innkeeper brought her the warm drink, Phiona looked up but the man with black braids had gone.

Tierria decided to go back to the inn to get something to eat and drink. While being gawked at once again, she noticed that all the tables were filled. Plus, Severine was nowhere in sight.

Maybe he went to his room, she thought to herself.

As Tierria's eyes scanned the room, she noticed a woman sitting at a table by herself. She had long brown hair with dark brown eyes, and tanned skin. She was also the only woman (besides Tierria) in this tavern who didn't work here. Tierria decided that it was best sitting with her. The Stratanian girl then made her way over to the woman.

"Excuse me, may I sit here?" she asked in her most polite voice.

"Excuse me, may I sit here?"

Phiona looked up at the young woman who addressed her.  Seeing as all the other tables were full, Phiona nodded and made a small gesture toward the empty chair to her left, since her right hand was employed with gripping her half-full goblet.  "Please do."  There were two other chairs at the table, although the one to Phiona's immediate right was hosting a few of her purchases from the day.

Phiona took a moment to study the dark-skinned woman as she sat.  She was dressed all in white and had raven-black hair worn in a very exotic style.  Phiona turned her gaze to another part of the common room and took a sip of her now-cool mulled wine, fully aware of the attention this beautiful woman was drawing to their table.

"Thank you."

Tierria sat down, and pulled herself forward. Seeing a waiter nearby, she ordered for some juice. She was not one to drink alcohol. The woman looked like she could protect herself without a problem, so Tierria felt comfortable around her. She ignored the leering that was going on, and decided to stir up a conversation.

"So, what brings you to Dasai, if you don't mind me asking?"

"To learn from the merc school.  Gather supplies."  Phiona put down her empty goblet and turned her gaze to the young woman.  "Might stay awhile, who knows?  Who are you?"

The waiter brought the woman's drink and Phiona tapped her own goblet with an index finger, thereby ordering another, before looking back at her drinking companion.  "I'm Phiona."  She leaned back in her chair and glanced over her left shoulder, giving a warning look at one particularly lecherous old man that was oggling the raven-haired beauty from behind.  He looked away.

Recieving her juice, Tierria paid the waiter and smiled.

"My name is Tierria Selig. I'm from the city of Uderza. My friend Severine and I just started to travel around Sarvonia. Hopefully, the rest of the world as well. We always talked about how wonderful it would be to see Caelereth in all of its glory..." Tierria sighed a little, thinking back to the conversation that they had a few years ago about the world. Severine ended up falling asleep in her arms. What she wouldn't give to have another moment like that...

Tierria took a sip from her drink. "Maybe Severine will go to the mercenary school with you...that is if we can gather the money. But, he probably would think going to the school would slow us down on our journey."

It's funny how it got from 'his' journey to 'ours'...

Tierria took another sip. "It's nice to see another lady in here who is not an employee. Being around these leecherous men makes me a little nervous."

Severine got off his bed, and walked out of his room. He headed down the hallway to speak to the two cloaked people, and not wait for Tierria. He figured that she was probably eating somewhere, or talking to someone, knowing her. He would tell her of his results later on.

From what the innkeeper told him, their room was was few doors down from his. Before knocking, Severine's eyes were fixed on the wooden door before him. Severine took a few deep breaths, and tapped the door with his knuckles. When there was no answer after a few minutes, Severine did it again. This time, there was a low male voice.

"Who is it?"

Severine hesitated before replying. "Uh...my name is Severine. I wish to talk to you for a few minutes about something important."

At first there was no sound from the other side of the door. Severine leaned against the door, with his untied braids falling infront of his face. He waited for a nearly a minute before the voice spoke again.

"Fine."

The door opened, and Severine saw the two people with their cloaks still on. Judging by body form, Severine saw that one was male, and the other appeared to be female. Closing the door, Severine gave a short wave.

"Hello. Thank you for your-"

"State your case." The male was straight to the point.

Severine was rather not surprised. He figured that the situation would be this tense. "Well I want to talk about a conversation that you two was having downstairs-"

"So you was eavesdropping?" demanded the female.

"Well...yes. But for good reason though. You see...I lost my family in that fire years ago in the desert. And ever since that day, I vowed that I would find out who did it. I-"

"Let me guess. You think we have something to do with it?" interupted the male. "Or you think we might know who did it?"

I guess these two are not known for their manners, thought Severine.

"I was hoping you did." Severine hoped they kenw he was talking about the latter.

The two cloaked figures turned to each other for a moment. They were both silent, making it seem like they were reading each other's minds. The female gave the male a short nod, and they turned back to Severine.

"Since you suffered a great lost, we'll tell you a little bit of what we know."

Severine nodded. "Thank you" he said.

The male shook his head. "Don't thank us" he said. "You caught us on a good day. We probably would've killed you for listening to our personal business. But, might as well get you out of here as fast as possible. There is a woman that we are looking for, who we think was involved with the fire that we saw years back. Why we are looking for her is our own business. We believe that she might go under the name of 'The Ivory Fox' nowadays, committing assassinations from time to time. She is usually active north of here, but has killed a few wealthy men around this area as of late. So if you want answers about your family's death, look for her. That is, if our suspicions are right. But I doubt you will live longer after meeting her. That is all we can say."

"Thank you very much..." Severine was slightly disappointed that he couldn't learn more. He then caught the an eye of the male looking at his sword.

"May I see that for a moment?"

"Sure..." Severine took out the black and silver handle bastard sword, and handed it to the man.

The cloaked male stared at it carefully. "Very nice..." he said. "Very nice indeed. Even though it looks new, I can tell it has been through many battles. This blade...I can feel something from it..."

He then looked at Severine, revealing his grey eyes. "Never lose this sword."

Severine nodded. "Of course I won't lose it." Severine was given back the sword. After putting it in its sheath, Severine headed for the door. Saying thank you one more time, Severine left the room.

The cloaked man turned to the woman. "If he wishes to defeat her...he better never let go of that blade..."

"I wonder what Severine is doing..."

Tierria sighed, and looked around the room. She could tell that most of the men now had their eyes off of her. Tierria smiled to herself, and took another sip from her drink.

Hmm, I wonder why that is? she thought with a sly smile. She was starting to like this Phiona woman already. She was actually starting to hope that she would end up traveling with them. She could use the friendly company of another female. She wasn't like the female friends Tierria had back at Uderza, who wouldn't even have the guts to step into this tavern full of perverted men. And even if they did, they would be shaking in their shoes.

"Excuse me beautiful."

Being caught off guard from her thoughts, Tierria looked up, and saw a muscular man with a face that looked like it has been ran over by a horse a few times. She figured that he would like to buy her a drink or something. Being addressed with this kind of situation before, the girl would have to let him off gently.

"Yes?" she asked.

The man grinned, and looked around the tavern, as if he wasn't sure of who was watching. "Listen...I know you're waiting for a man who wants a good time. Let's cut the bull, and go up to my room here. If you're good enough, I'll pay you well."

Tierria looked at the man in complete shock. Did he think she was a prostitute!? Just because she was a beautiful girl who dressed well in a trashy place like this didn't mean that she was selling her body!

"Get away!" Tierria cried, and turned away.

"I tried asking nicely. I don't have much time, so let's get this over with!" The man's large hand grabbed Tierria's small wrist.

"Hey!" cried Tierria, trying to pull away. "Let go of me!"

"How do you heal a man's heart when you always end up wounding it?"

Severine went back downstairs to see if Tierria was around. He kept thinking about he was going to go about asking where this 'Ivory Fox' lady might be. He also thought about what the man said about his sword.

Never lose this sword...

The Sword of Halo has been in his family for some time now. When the man said it was special, he probably was telling the truth, because the blade was said to do some amazing things while in battle. Even his father said that he had a strange experience once while fighting with it. Severine always wondered what that experience was, but nobody could explain it. It was also said in family folklore that the sword was made for a certain dark event to help the family. Most of the people in the Halo family believed the fire was that event.

As Severine scanned the room, he saw a man with his hand on Tierria, who was trying to pull away.

"Tierria!" he shouted, and ran over.

Before the man knew it, his lights were knocked out by a strong right. Before Severine could say anything, several men stood by a nearby table.

"Hey!" one of them shouted. "That was our friend you knocked out!"

Great, thought Severine. So much for peace and quiet...

Tierria looked up at Severine, speechless.

I guess he always know when to come at the right time, she thought to herself.

She then saw several men rise up from their seats, and mentioning that the man Severine knocked out was their friend.

"Uh-oh." was all she could say.

"It's nice to see another lady in here who is not an employee. Being around these lecherous men makes me a little nervous." Tierria remarked while sipping her juice.

Phiona nodded in agreement, wondering why the waiter was taking so long in bringing her refill.  ((OOC: Here follows the reason why Phiona didn't react right away to Tierria's situation.))  Impatiant, Phiona decided to go to the bar instead and have the innkeeper handle it.  She murmurred, "Be right back," knowing instinctively that the young woman would keep an eye on Phiona's purchases.

And so Phiona was at the bar, across the room, when the following occurred:

"Excuse me beautiful."  The strange man.

"Yes?" Tierria asked.

The man grinned,  "Listen...I know you're waiting for a man who wants a good time. Let's cut the bull, and go up to my room here. If you're good enough, I'll pay you well."

"Get away!" Tierria cried, and turned away.

"I tried asking nicely. I don't have much time, so let's get this over with!" The man's large hand grabbed Tierria's small wrist.

"Hey!" cried Tierria, trying to pull away.

"Let go of me!"

Hearing Tierria's cry, but not what led up to it, Phiona turned from the innkeeper to see what the matter was.  Across the smokey room, she saw the man with the black braids moving quickly to help the young woman.  "Tierria!" he shouted, as he ran across the common room.  Phiona watched as Tierria's Severine- for it could only be the man she mentioned earlier- landed a hard punch to the villain that had accosted the beautiful woman the moment Phiona had left her alone.

As the man hit the floor, several of his companions approached, "Hey!" one of them shouted. "That was our friend you knocked out!"

There were more than a half dozen and Phiona could see that maybe Severine was outnumbered.  He was certainly surrounded.  Well enough, she was not about to let this go, he was only defending his friend.  Forgetting the drink she'd just ordered, Phiona strode forward, then skirted the group until there was only one man between her and Tierria.  Her plan was to pull the young woman out of what could turn into an ugly tavern brawl...

Her target did not see Phiona's approach, so intent was the moan on closing in toward Severine.  She swiftly slipped her leg in front of his and pushed him forward, using his momentum against him.  He fell flat on his face.  Before he could register what happened, Phiona stepped heavily on his back- forcing his breath out- and over him to arrive at Tierria's side.  "That way!" She said urgently as she pointed to the breach, "Go to the innkeeper.. Now!"

Phiona turned to face the next nearest villain.

Severine stared at the woman who just entered herself on his side, in what was to be one mess of a tavern fight. She looked like she could handle herself pretty well, so he was fine with her helping him. And the fact she helped Tierria showed that she had a good heart.

"Hi" greeted Severine, grinning at the men before, though he was talking to the woman. "Come to join the fun?"

Heh, he thought. I probably don't even need my weapons for this. They'll pay for messing around with a lady. Drunken bastards...

Severine turned to the woman, and made a path for her.

"Ladies first."

"Hi" greeted Severine, "Come to join the fun?"

Phiona knew he was addressing her, yet he kept his eyes on their many opponents.  She gave him a pointed look for ill-placed humor even though it was lost on him.

"Ladies first." He said.

Phiona again nudged Tierria toward the opening she made, hoping the woman would hurry before the thug stood up.  "Go!"

Silently cursing at herself for leaving her weapons in her room, Phiona stepped up to the closest standing villain and grabbed his beard.  With a fistfull of thick hair to hold her target steady, she landed two quick punches to the man's head.  He swung at her and missed, but his other hand came up and gripped Phiona by the throat.  Another man moved forward to help his friend.  Still grappling with the first man, Phiona kicked out and managed to get the second one in the crotch... The latter doubling over with a sick-sounding groan.

At least he'll be outta the way for awhile! thought Phiona.  She couldn't see what was going on with Severine, but by the sound of it, he was doing fine.

Still holding the first man's beard, and fast losing her breathe from his throat-hold, Phiona hit him hard on the temple.  Stunned, he finally let go of her neck.  There would be a nasty bruise, she knew, but vanity was never a concern of her's.  Taking advantage of his daze, she yanked his head down toward her knee and took him out of the fight.  Letting him drop to the ground like so much meat, already forgotten, she took a moment to jump onto the back of the man she'd landed, once again knocking him down.  This time he didn't move.

Someone dived at her and they both landed on a nearby table.  Plates of half eaten food, mugs and goblets went flying everywhere as the table tipped and they crashed noisily to the floor.  The man was half again her size and nearly weighed double.  Somehow, she ended up pinned to the floor.  In the background, the was a tummult of noise, cheering, shouts, cries and crashes.  The fallen table blocked her view of the rest of the room, and the man had now grabbed her hair, holding her head flat to the floor.

"What now, wench?"  He breathed his foul questions at her.  He flashed a messy, yellow grin at her as his free hand groped for her breast.

Phiona narrowed her eyes into a deadly stare, which only seemed to encourage the thug.  Her free hand found a heavy tankard, one of the casualties of the table.  This she brought up and slammed into his face, busting his nose sideways.  A fountain of red spurted out and the thug screamed, rolling off her and grabbing at his broken nose with both hands.

Splattered with the man's blood, Phiona quickly rolled up onto her feet, pausing only to spit once on the villain before vaulting over the tilted table to rejoin the fight.

After watching the woman take care of the first two guys, Severine turned his attention to a drunken bald man coming towards his fighting partner with a broken bottle. Seeing how the man wavered back and forth because of the liquor in his sustem, Severine had some time to spare.

Untying his hair, Severine handed a small band made from beads (that tied his hair back) to a middle-aged, wealthy-looking man sitting next to where Severine is standing.

"Watch this for me" Severine said, and walked up to the bald man.

Turning him around, Severine threw him on top of the table, and watched it break from the weight. Two more men ran at Severine, who grinned from behind his hair. A small feeling of battle lust was growing from inside of him. With one well-placed kick, Severine sent a chair flying into the arms of one of the men. The Shendar male ran up to him, and with his other foot, kicked him in the face. Once the chair fell to the floor, Severine smashed the other man's face against it. From the corner of his eye, he saw that some of the spectators decided to fight amongst themselves. he now had a few more opponents then he bargained for.

Hearing the sound of a drunken war cry from behind, Severine used his agility to jump to a table, and did a forward roll off of it.

That was close, Severine thought, feeling relieved.

He soon felt himself being tackled from behind. with a bit of wind being knocked out of him, Severine used all of his strength to elbow the man in the stomach, and threw him into another man coming towards him.

"Sometimes I think I fight better without weapons then I do with them" Severine said in a dry voice, while pushing back his hair.

He soon found himself squaring off with two men coming at him with chairs from either side. Severine casually ducked and watched them smash each other. They both soon fell unconscious. Before Severine could even think to laugh, he felt a fist collide with his face from the side. Falling to the floor, Severine looked up and saw a tall man grinning down at him.

"You like that one pretty boy?" the man's laughter was killing irratating Severine more than the punch did.

"No...but this is fine with me!"

The man soon was grabbing hios crotch from a quick kick, and fell over. If that woman coudld do it, why couldn't he?

"Did I mention that I hate being called 'pretty boy'?" Severine looked at the man with disguts, and a little bit of humor at how he beat his opponent.

After getting up, Severine knocked out a few more drunkards with punches, and decided to check his surroundings. With the exception of the inn employess, a few men, Tierria, and the woman, every man who fought was unconscious, or just lying on the ground. After a few minuetes of awe at how much people participated themselves in this free-for-all, Severine walked over to the man at the table to get his beads back.

"So," said Severine, addressing the woman. "What is your name?"

"Go!"

Tierria ran over to the innkeeper who shook his head sadly.

"I told that boy not to start any trouble..." she heard him say.

Tierria looked back at Severine and Phiona, who both were fighting the men that surrounded them. She was amazed by how well both handled themselves with such a large amount of opponents. After all, this was the first time she saw either of them fight someone. Tierria was there during so many training sessions that Severine had with his uncle, but she never saw him in a real fight before.

While there was fights being started among the spectators- possibly because of the spirit of violence in the air- Tierria's focus was mostly on Phiona. The woman was pinned down by some lecher to tried to grope her, but he found himself knocked out. Tierria cheered when the womna handled the other thugs that tried to attack her. The innkeeper looked at Tierria as if she was crazy.

"Well," he said to himself. "At least this is not the first time."

Tierria looked at him. "This happened more than once?" she asked.

"Oh, at least twice a month. Maybe even three times. But this is the largest brawl I've ever saw."

The two turned their attention back to the fight. The waitresses had their backs against the wall, holding each other in fright. A wealthy-looking man was watching the brawl with great interest.  A few minutes later when it was all said and done, only a few men, Phiona, and Severine was the only ones standing.

Great way to start off a journey, Tierria thought to herself sarcastically.

After a few more punches and kicks, the fight was over.

Phiona looked around and saw that Tierria had made it safely to the innkeeper's side, and that Severine had taken down the other bunch of men.  She would have preferred it if those men had ran from the fight instead, but obviously the drink had made them far too courageous for their own good.

She walked over to her table which had miraculously escaped destruction.  She sat heavily in her chair and rubbed her bruised neck.  Looking down, she noticed the blood splatters all over her gray tunic.  She supposed she should be glad it wasn't her own, but still, she like this tunic.

Phiona watched Severine talk to a man who'd stood by and watched the brawl.  With a sigh, she picked up her goblet of cold, mulled wine and drained it.

((OOC: I was actually asking you that question Phiona.lol))

Seeing that he was getting no response from the woman, Severine sat down at the table where the wealthy man sat. He figured the two of them both needed some rest before talking to each other. As he tied his hair back, he heard the man in front of him clapping.

"Brilliant perfromance! Just wonderful!" he said. "That was terrific! I've seen many taverns fights in my life, but never did I see two people take down everyone! Let alone, a young man and a woman!"

"Yeah? So?" Severine was starting to feel a little irratated at the man's over excitement.

The black haired, bearded man stared at Severine for a moment, and started to laugh.

"Excuse me! Where's my manners? My name is Crestus Voltaire, merchant connoisseur! In case if you haven't noticed...I really liked your little performance."

Severine looked over at Tierria to see if she was okay. "I'll let you know if I take my act around Sarvonia..."

Crestus started laughing again. To Severine, this man seemed a bit too happy.

"A sense of humor too! I like that in a person. But let me get staright down to business. My shop specializes in selling many things. Weapons...clothes...food...you name it. I need to take a caravan to this small village just outside of the Sharadon forest called Sheren. Just take out the a's and put in the e's, huh?"

Judging by Severine's face, the young man wasn't amused.

"Well, I need a few people to gurad this caravan. I'm hoping that you and the woman would take me up on this offer. What do you say? I pay well."

Severine's first thought was to refuse the man's offer. There was something about him that seemed a little phony. But then, he figured that he would need the money later on. There was no question about that. He didn't know how the woman felt about this, but she would probably need it as well. She looked like a sword-for-hire.

"Well...sounds tempting. I guess I'll do it."

Crestus smiled. "That's great!" he exclaimed. He then turned to the woman. "What about you, fine lady?"

Tierria walked from behind the counter. Slowly stepping over the unconscious bodies, Tierria began to hear a little of Severine's conversation with the wealthy-looking man. From what she heard, it sounded like the man was offering him a job. She was hoping that he would take it. Tierria sat down at Phiona's table, and looked at the woman's tunic, which was covered in blood.

"Oh my!" she cried. "That doesn't look good. If you want, I can buy you a new one. It's the least I can do for helping Sevy and I."

While resting at her table, Phiona couldn't help but overhear the negotiations between Severine and this merchant,  Crestus Voltaire.  She tilted her head to the right, felt the bones in there popping in a good way.

Just then, Severine agreed to the task and the merchant turned to Phiona.  "What about you, fine lady?"

Phiona glanced at him as if measuring his worth.  Before she could reply, however, Tierria had returned to the table and sat down, "Oh my!" cried the young woman. "That doesn't look good. If you want, I can buy you a new one. It's the least I can do for helping Sevy and I."

Half holding up a hand toward Tierria, Phiona nodded to the merchant.  "I accept."  She didn't need to say more, figuring that Severine would arrange all.  Looking back to Tierria again Phiona shook her head at the woman's offer.  "There is no need.  I have others."  With a small smile, the tawny-haired fighter stood and began to gather her bundles.  She bent to pick up the bow which had fallen to the wooden floor.  "You'd best stick close to your friend while here, to avoid another fight."

Heading for the stairs, Phiona navigated around the uncouscious men who were only now beginning to rouse.  She paused only long enough to order a private bath from the innkeeper.

"I accept."

Severine smiled to himself  He hoped that the woman would accept the offer. He wanted to get to know her better. He always acknowledged great skill when he saw it. Also, she helped Tierria.

"Great!" said Crestus, now happy than ever. "The caravan leaves tomorrow morning. I'll comeback to pick the both of you up. You'll be paid when the trip is over."

Severine nodded. "Okay."

When Severine turned his head, he saw the woman leaving. He still haven't got her name yet. Maybe Tierria knows it. He would ask later. Right now, all he wanted was some rest. He knew that he was going to have a long day tomorrow. And since this man was a merchant, he would probably know something about The Ivory Fox. Seeing that the innkeeper was giving hima look, Severine picked up a pouch of coins from an unconscious drunkard.

"Here's for the trouble" he said, and walked towards the steps.

Feeling better that they were now going to be traveling together, Tierria thought about buying some souvenirs to take with her on this journey. But looking around the area, she began feeling bad about what happened. She knew she had to do soemthing about this..or at least help in some way.

Going up to the innkeeper, she asked "Can I help you clean this place up? Today must have been very unsettling for you, and I feel that part of this is my fault."

The innkeeper looked at her for a second, and laughed a little. "It's not your fault young lady," he replied. "But, if you want to help my employees and I, I would be grateful."

Tierria was going to ask Severine if he wanted to, but she saw that he went upstairs.

"How much longer do I have wait?"

"Not too long my little Sevy-rose."

"But mommy...I wanna go and play!"

"Heh. Always the restless one, huh my son? You'll like what I'm doing for you."

"Am I really mommy? I don't even like braids!"

"Aww, now don't say that. You'll like it. Trust me."

"I trust you mommy."

Severine's eyes opened after hearing those words. He just awakened from his recent flashback dream, involving his mother. He remembered like it was yesterday when he first got his hair braided by his mother. Even though she looked out of place, she acted the same way any other Shendar woman would act. And even then, theer was something in her personality that would separate her from the rest. Her kindness for others, and her sincerity was a little above most people in the tribe. Sometimes there were some that would even try to take advantage of that.

Staring up at the ceiling through his hair, Severine started to think about The Ivory Fox. They said that his mother was most likely Kasumarri, and the cloaked figures mentioned that The Ivory Fox was Kasumarri. Could it be that these two had some kind of past, and The Ivory Fox went after her? Did someone hire her to kill his mother, or his family? That is if the Ivory Fox did kill them of course.

It was the earliest hour of the morning.  Phiona placed her journal, the last of her few belongings into a leather pack, tied the leather straps to secure it.  Saddlebags, already full, were on the bed nearby.  She straightened up, stretched her back a bit, and looked around the plain room with an efficient and critical eye, not wanting to leave anything behind.

This had been only her fourth night in the room.  Phiona had not been in town long enough to get comfortable.  This room was like any other, as was this town once the few, unique aspects were set aside.  Dasai was merely another stopover; a place to make plans for the future.  Her future.

Ah, but I didn't make any plans, did I?  I put that off.  Puttered around the town, sight-seeing and shopping, but not accomplishing anything of importance.  No matter- Things have a nasty habit of falling into my lap.  The gods give and the gods take away, for those who believe in such beings...  but what chaos do the fates have in store for me now?

She grabbed her belt that carried her sword-in-sheath, and strapped it about her boyish hips while considered the young couple she met only last night: the woman Tierria, and her striking companion, Severine.  Luck being the double-edged sword that it is, she wondered by what stroke had she met these two?  They both seemed friendly enough to her but she wasn't one for dealing well with such overtness; this much she knew.  Time alone would witness the forging of alliances, the molding of friendships.  This line of thinking wasn't due to suspicion, but rather Phiona's inate inability to express herself to most people... a valid shortcoming that she readily accepted.  Still, she conceded, I have to work on that.

Then there was the merchant, Crestus Voltaire.  Phiona took the work as a distraction, not because she needed the coin.  Recent events had nearly crushed her spirit for adventure.  The pain was still there, still too fresh.  It was a deep undercurrent in the seemingly placid river of her demeanor and if she let them, her memories would drown her soul in sorrow.  With a sudden shake of her head, she shut away the train of thought before it flooded her, forcing her thoughts instead to the day ahead- a day fraught with diversion.

Phiona slung her saddlebags over one shoulder, wincing a little from the soreness gained in the brawl last night.  Then  she picked up her pack and the two, unstrung longbows.  With a last look at the room, she went out the door.

____

The common room was mostly empty but for a couple of all-night revelers and one or two early risers.  Phiona chose the barstool closest to the door and piled her gear on the floor next to it.  From the waitress, she ordered a hot breakfast and strong tea.  She leaned against the counter, not bothering to sit just yet.

Tierria awakened within the first hour of sunlight. The girl laid in her bed for about twenty minutes, deciding whether she should head to Severine's room. Knowing him, he was probably already eating breakfast. That boy never knew when to sleep.

Getting out of the bed, the girl changed from her nightgown, to her regular clothes. There was no use lying in bed all morning. The merchant would be here any hour to pick them up. It should be an easy mission, but she wasn't sure where the merchant said he was going. she guessed it didn't really matter too much, as long as nothing bad happened. But there was this odd feeling inside of her when she thought about that. Sje hated thinking bad thoughts, but sometimes she couldn't help it. This was one of those times.

"Calm yourself Tierria," she said to herself. "Everything is going to be alright..."

The girl then pakced her things, and left her room.

Severine was in fact, awake. Actually, severine wasn't even in the tavern. He had went to the stables to tend to his Aj'Nuvic, Rosebud. His animal companion was feeling okay, and probably wanted to go out in the open. He didn't blame him. Severine wanted to leave himself. Not that he didn't like Dasai or anything, but he felt that he wanted to move on to another area. That's why he was happy to leave Uderza.

I guess once a nomad is always a nomad, huh? Severine thought to himself.

Severine entered the Sea Breeze tavern, where he saw the woman named Phiona (the innkeeper told him who she was earlier) at the counter. He figured that he could get soem conversation in before Crestus arrived. Going over to the woman, he decided to start with a simple greeting.

"Hello." Taking one look around the tavern (he saw that hardly any of the regulars were around), he then said. "Your name is Phiona right? What got you to agree to this trip?"

Phiona was enjoying her hot breakfast of sausage, eggs and toast when Severine approached.  She glanced sideways at the handsome man as he walked up, noting that he showed no evidence of last night's brawl.  Remembering the vivid bruise on her neck, seen in the looking-glass this morning, Phiona could only shake her head in wonder.  Would that I were that resilient!

He said,  "Hello.  Your name is Phiona right? What got you to agree to this trip?"  She knew he was only making small talk and that was fine by her.

Nodding, she gestured to the stool next to the one she sat on and finished off the last gulp of her tea while he sat down.  "Phiona Whitefire." and in answer to his second question, "I need the work."  She brushed a few crumbs off her burnt sienna dyed leather tunic and shifted to face him directly.

It was then that she noticed the hilt of Severine's sword, a bastard sword by the size of the sheath, much like her own.  The workmanship was far superior though, she could tell this merely from glancing at the weapon.  Peering at it, she asked rather abruptly, "Can I see it?"

"Can I see it?"

Severine looked at Phiona for a moment. Of course she wasn't the first person to ask, nor was the cloaked man. For a sword that has been around for over 160 years, it did look like it was made yesterday. Taking out the sword, Severine gripped the silver and black handle, and pulled out the sword. The hilt was a shiny silver with a small inscription of a halo on it, and on the blade was a faded ancient inscription...even though the blade itself looked new. Very few people noticed it.

"Here you go," he said, giving it to Phiona. "And by the way, thanks for yesterday."

She took the long hilt that that Seveine presented to her in her left hand.  It was surprisingly light for its size.  With care and respect for such a fine weapon, Phiona rested the flat of the blade atop the sleeve of her right arm.  She turned it toward the light so she could study the markings better.  The scribing was so faint, she could barely make it out... the etchings practically squirmed under her discernment and it almost hurt her to read them but she just couldn't turn away!  Heart of the Elders.... no, Let the destiny of the wielder echo the souls of the past. She tilted her head and peered closer, Now, that cannot be right.  Maybe it is this?   She whispered it aloud so Severine could hear, "Wielder of Destiny Echoes Souls of the Past."

"Umm excuse me?  May I join at this table?"

Phiona looked up at the interuption to see a blond man in a long, green cloak.  His face was weathered, but the blue eyes that looked upon them were youthful.  Most evident on his face was an old scar that ran from brow nearly to the chin, across his left eye  The man seemed hesitant, like he wanted to ask a question.

"Sure, I see no problem in that."  Replied Severine, as the man took the stool on his far side.

"Morning Severine" Tierria said as she walked up. "Morning Phiona. How did all of you sleep last night?"

Phiona nooded her own greeting as she turned back to studying the magnificent sword.  She placed it lightly on the countertop, the hilt within easy reach of its owner.  She grabbed her pack from the floor and pulled out the journal which was packed conveniently on top.  Phiona then fished out her scribing kit.  Without asking permission, Phiona began to copy precisely the words into her book, along with the alternate translations and the complete description of the bastard sword.  She finished with a small sketch of the blade, indicating the location of the halo.

When she was done, she entered a small  tagline: Severine's Sword.

Severine heard Zeadon's question as he watched Phiona carefully inspect the sword. He watched her head tilt to the side as she looked closely at the small inscriptions on the blade.

"Wielder of Destiny Echoes Souls of the Past."

So that's what it says, Severine thought to himself. I wonder what that means...

As he pondered the thought, he noticed how attractive the woman seemed to him while looking at the sword, and writing in her book. Realizing this, Severine blushed a little, hoping that nobody noticed this. He then decided to answer Zeadon's question.

"It's a sword that has been passed own through my family for generations. I'm surrpised that it still looks as good as it did when it was first made." Severine had to admit, he did feel a bit special that eevryone was staring at the weapon. Even the innkeeper and some waitresses, as well as some customers were looking at the awsome sight.

Hearing Tierria's vocie, he turned to her. "Morning Tierria" he greeted back. "I slept well enough to wake up this early. I checked on Rosebud and Alchemy. They're doing fine."

As Severine was going to ask Phiona something, he heard a voice.

"There you all are! I glad that everyone is here!"

Severine tunred his head, and saw Crestus walking towards them. The man looked at Zeadon, and smiled.

As Tierria looked closely, she could see that they were discussing about Severine's sword. The blade was a magnificent one indeed, and she remebered how Severine would ask Lelor when he was going to be able to use it from time to time. The sword did belong to Severine's father at one time...

Huh?

Tierria stared closely at Severine. She had saw Severine blushing a little when she was walking towards them, but she didn't think he actually was. But now that she looked closely, she coudl she that he still kinda was...at Phiona? Could it be possible? The woman was beautiful indeed, but she never saw Severine blush at another woman before. Except for Tierria herself.

Deciding not to let it bother her much, Tierria turned her attention to Voltaire, who just came in.

Phiona stood up again, bringing the pack up off the floor and resting it on the barstool.  As she made minor adjustments here and there on the pack, she listened to the others speak .  Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Tierria watching them.  Was she staring?  Odd that she stood aside like that, it made Phiona wonder if something was bothering the young woman.

Finally finished fiddling with the pack, Phiona turned and leaned her back against the bar, preferring to stand for now.  Her shoulder inadvertently brushed against Severine's arm as she settled in place.  She realized she might be crowding him a bit.  She took a half step away to give Severine room, looking down at the floor to hide a sudden, inexplicable smile.

“Yes, these are the two that I was talking about” Crestus said, putting a hand on Zeadon’s shoulder. “Don’t they look strong? I’m telling you, this trip will go well. But, there’s this elf…Ripe Tide…or something…” Crestus starts to think to himself for a moment. “Ah! Ripp Dide! He’s going with me on the rest of my trade route! These two and the young lady are going with me to Sheren Village. Ripp, we will meet in Sharadon forest by this small stream, near the road.”

“Sheren Village?” asked Severine. “Where is that?”

Crestus turned to Severine, adjusting the gold chain that was around his neck. “Its just pass Sharadon Forest, north of here. A few days of traveling, possibly a tad bit more. You don’t mind, do you?”

Severine shook his head. “No, not at all.” Severine saw Phiona staring at the ground from the corner of his eye.

What’s with her? He wondered to himself.

He then turned back to Crestus. “Well, I think we should gather my aj, and Tierria her horse. It’s best to get this done with as fast as possible. By the way, what are we taking to Sheren Village?”

“Weapon and armor to these mercenaries that are guarding the village from bandits. I’m sure that they’ll like your company as well.”

“Alright” said Severine, grabbing his sword and sheath, and started heading towards the door. “Come on Tierria.”

Tierria stared at Phiona, looking down at the floor when Severine called for her. It seemed like the girl had a smile on her face.

What could she be smiling about? Tierria wondered to herself.

"Oh well..." Tierria followed Severine. Quickly walking next to him, she decided to ask him about something that would take her mind off of what it was on at the moment

"What happened with the cloaked figures?" she asked. "Are you going to ask Crestus about this 'Ivory Fox' character that you told me about last night?"

"How do you heal a man's heart when you always end up wounding it?"

As Severine and Tierria walked outside, followed by the merchant, Phiona grabbed her packs and weapons.  The innkeeper entered the room from the kitchens just then.  On a rare impulse she asked him, "Do you know the merchant, Crestus Voltaire?"

The innkeeper began to wipe down the counter with a soapy rag.  "That one?  He comes in here on a regular basis and hires people as guards.  Only the toughest looking people does he talk to.  'Tho your fight last night was a plus since he got to see you fight first."  He smiled, "I like a gal who can handle herself in a brawl... don't see that too much anymore."

"Mmmm."  Phiona glanced around and saw that Zeadon was still in the room.  She lowered her voice, leaned forward and asked the inkeeper, "Regular basis?  How regular?  What about the people he hires?"

Now the innkeeper was rinsing the soap off the counter with a different rag. "Dunno.  Maybe he only pays them for a one way trip.  That Crestsu comes around about twice a month looking for help.  There's some organized banditry up north, I hear, but I haven't heard about killing... just robbing.  Heh, guess that's why he needs the guards."  He grinned at his cleverness.

"My thanks."  Phiona nodded and placed on the counter a few spare coins from her money pouch.  "Good luck to you."  She took her things and went out the door.

"Actually, that sounds like a good idea Tierria."

Severine turned around, and saw Crestus coming out of the tavern. "Excuse me Mr.Voltaire" he said. "I need to ask you something."

"Sure thing young man. It's Severine, right? I got your names from the innkeeper."

"Yes." Severine's voice became a little low before he asked his question. Looking around, he moved to his right as a local was headed into the tavern. "Do...you know anything about an assassin by the name of Ivory Fox?"

Voltaire stared at Severine for a long time before answering. His eyes looked like they wanted to answer, but his mouth told a different story. "Dangerous woman..." he began to say. "Very deadly. Nobody has ever saw her face. Her hair was once seen...long and white...like ivory. Hence, her name. They say that she never failed a mission. I just hope I'm not one of her targets..." Crestus looked around for a moment, as if someone was watching him. "Unlike most assassins, she can attack in the day just as well she can attack in the night..."

"Ah. And she usually attacks up north, right?"

"Usually. Sometimes around here too. Most of the victims are business men like myself. That's why I must be careful..."

Voltaire started walking away. "Get your things ready, and meet me at my weapons shop on the eastern end of the city."

"Ok" said Severine, and went towards the stables with Tierria.

He didn't learn too much from Crestus either.

Someone must know something...

Tierria was over hearing the conversation between Severine and Crestus. She stood a few feet away, but Crestus did a bad job of talking low. She knew deep inside of her, that Severine wanted to find out about this Ivory Fox character. She didn't blame him...avenging his family and all. But if she was as dangerous as everyone said...could he will hope to win? Severine was good. But there was much he still had to learn...

Leaning on her long staff, Tierria began thinking some things over in her head. Since Sevy was in a rush, they would probably buy some food to take with them. She heard those spicy fish wraps tasted good...

She also thought about Phiona. It seemed like the woman was smiling at Severine. Maybe she just think he's cute. Hopefully, she didn't take anything farther though. Tierria kenw she had to be the one to get through Severine's emotional walls. He would let no girl through...not even her. After the trip, she'll just go her own way. Hopefully. She didn't seem like the type to talk much, but Tierria was grateful for what she done for her. It was just that she didn't want her to get too involved with Seevrine.

Why in the name of Seyella am I thinking about all of this crap that hasn't happened yet!? Tierria thought in frustration.

Growling to herself, Tierria saw Severine going towards the stables. Quickly taking her things, she followed.

Severine arrived at the stables, where he went over to his aj, Rosebud.

"Hey there pal" he said, smiling when the creature turned its eyes to him. "Sorry I had you cramped up in here. If i had it my way, you would've stayed in the room with me."

Rosebud said nothing, but he creature seemed to feel better when its master started to pat its head. Severine walked Rosebud towards the entrance, wheer he paid the owner.

"Thanks" he said. "I know you're not used to taking care of an aj..."

"Oh nonsense!" said the owner smiling. "Every so often an aj and its owner comes by. I may not be the best aj caretaker, but I like these creatures. I mean no regular can even keep up with these things!"

"True" said Severine, and smiled at Rosebud "You hear that? You're ten times better than a horse!" Severine then hoped on Rosebud, and waited for Tierria outside. The young man loved Rosebud just as much as he loved his own family...the same was with Rosebud. The bond between a Shendar and their aj was priceless and invincible. Severine always felt lucky that he was able to save his aj...but unfortunately...he couldn't do the same with his family.

Sighing at this thought, Severine watched as Tierria got Alchemy.

Tierria took her white horse Alchemy from the stall, and went over to pay the owner. She looked at Severine for a moment, and saw a bit of depression in his eyes. It has been awhile since he had that look...the look he always shown when they was younger. It always pained her deep inside to see him that way...away that she wanted to end for him.

"That's a beautiful horse you have there miss" said the owner.

"Thank you" said Tierria with a small smile, and mounted her steed. She then went over to Severine.

"You okay?" she asked, playing his his braids a little. She was the only person he would let do that.

The smile he gave her try to assure her that he was, but she knew he was faking it.

Sevy, Sevy, Sevy...my dear Defender Of Roses...

Tierria smiled back, and went in the direction towards Crestus' shop with Severine.

Mulling over what the innkeeper told her, Phiona arrived in the stables to see Tierria on a horse next to Severine who was riding an Aj.  more unexpected than Severine's choice of mount was their behavior- the young woman was leaning to Severine and playing with his black braids and they were smiling at each other; it was a very tender moment.  Phiona hadn't realized that the two were quite so close.

Phiona ducked her head a little and nodded a greeting to them, even though they'd just parted a few minutes before.  She then quickly turned away and strode toward the stall which held her mare.  With practiced speed and skill, she had her mount saddled up in short order.  She fixed the saddlebags on evenly over the mare's flanks,  centering the pack on top, between the full bags.  Pulling her own bastard sword from its sheath, she placed it into the one that was attached to the saddle.  Both longbows went to the javelin holster.  She made a mental note to stop and by a quiver of arrows before the caravan left town.  Climbing into the saddle, she rode toward the stable entrance.

She took care of her bill, then rode out after Severine and Tierria who were both, by now, far down the rode... yet easily seen by their snowwhite-colored mounts.

Phiona soon caught up with them since they weren't in a hurry, lagging behind them so she wouldn't intrude on their conversations but still close enough so she couldn't lose them.  Phiona had no idea where this merchant's caravan was located.

Severine turned his head from Tierria, and saw Phiona staring at them. He then looked forward, and continued on his way with Tierria beside him. In the distance, he could see the caravan and Voltaire standing around it.

Dearest Zeadon,
My son my pride and joy, I was supposed to give these to you by you 16 birthday, but if your reading these somthing must have happened to me to take my life. Here beside the lettter I left you are two swords that used to belong your grandfather. I pass these swords on to you to help your journey in life.
My father told me to pass these down to you on your 16th birthday. I'm not certain why, but to remember these words: Follow the halo for it will bring you to your destiny.....

After reading the letter Zeadon folded it up and put it away.Leaped upon his horse and met up with Severine.

Severine drew closer and closer to the caravan. From the corner of his eye, he saw Zeadon riding next to him.

I thought he would be with Voltaire right now, he thought to himself.

Within the few days he was here, the Shendar had mad two allies. At least that's what he thought. And hopefully, they will be valuble ones. Valuble as in helping him on his quest? Maybe. The choice was theirs. Valuble in information? Well the two of them do seem like they travel a lot, so he'll ask them about The Ivory Fox later.

All of this thinking was making Severine's eyes slant a bit, which was a sign of him zoning out. He barely even heard Crestus calling out to him.

"Severine!"

Severine's eyes snapped open, and he saw that Rosebud was right in front of the man, who was standing next to several other men. To Severine, they looked like they were hired help as well.

"This is the people I was telling you about" said Crestus to the men. "They survived a tavern brawl without even using weapons. And we're talking about fighting nearly every drunkard in that place!"

One of them looked at Severine up and down. After a moment of silence, he said "Well any decent fighter could beat any lazy drunkard. They all don't look like much to me..."

"Yeah," added another guard. He then looked at Tierria, showing a toothless grin. "But I sure like to see her skills!"

Without hesitation, Severine glared at him and said "Touch her, and you die."

The coldness from the young man's voice made the guard grab his sword handle, and growl.

"Watch who you're talking to runt!"

Crestus immediately went inbetween the two. "People! People! Calm down! We have a mission to attend to! We're all on the same side here! Sir Halo, you're not killing anybody, and Gromelson, you better keep your hands off of that young lady! I saw what happened to the last pervert that tried that, and boy the results wasn't good..." the merchant then turned to Severine and winked.

Severine nodded at the merchant. "Fine by me. But I won't be responsible for my actions if he tries anything. And if it comes to that, I expected to be paid as well, for dealing with a lecher like himself..." Severine moved away with his aj. "Let's get going."

"Touch her, and you die."

Tierria's eyes widened at Severine, who was glaring daggers at this Gromelson character. Ddid he just say what she think he just say!?

Never before have she ever heard Severine say that to another man when he was defending her. there were words that came close, but nor the exact words or the amount of coldness was the same. She knew she had probelms only just yesterday with a lecher, but Severine was really angry this time!

Maybe he really does care for me more ways than one, Tierria thought to herself.

Tierria begin to see something in Severine's eyes...something that didn't seem right. Every once in a blue moon she would see his eyes like this, but it always made her nervous when she looked. There were also times where Severine would have a similar look when he was a little too close to her body...coming from situations where she would fall into his arms from tripping or losing balance, times where he would carry her, or times where she would where something that was more stunning than the clothes she wore now. She wanted to know just what was going on in that head of his...she needed to know that answer. Maybe that was to key to saving this boy's soul.

After things calmed down, she saw Severine moving away with his aj.

"Let's get going" he said.

Tierria slowly shook her head, sadness slowly coming over her.

"Sevy..."

"Touch her you die"

Zeadon's attention drifted to Severine. He saw a bulky man grabbing his sword handle. Zeadon thought to himself.

"uh oh, here we go..."

Then crestus stepped imbetween Serverine and the other man.

"lets get going" said Severine

Relaxing Zeadon approached Severine and asked him

"Do you think were are going to make a journey with out fighting with these things!?"

"Do you think we are going to make a journey without fighting with these things!?"

Severine gave Zeadon a side glance. "Perhaps" was all he said, and continued to move with his aj as the caravan got started behind him.

Severine knew he was too harsh, but deep down inside, he didn't trust anyone that was around him at this moment, with the exception of Tierria. Even though Phiona and Zeadon seemed alright, they looked a little too interested in his sword. His uncle always said that when going out in the world, be careful of who to trust. Your closest allies were usually the ones who doesn't talk too much or talk too little. Only at the right time. Both Phiona and Zeadon seemed like they were in that area, so his trust with them might go up.

Turning to take a glance at Phiona, he ended up taking a longer look than expected. The light from the sun seem to give her a sort of glow...a similar glow that a full moon at night seems to give Tierria.

Hoping that she didn't see him staring at her, Severine turned his head back to the road before them.

His journey was just starting.

Tierria drifted back from Severine a bit. She knew that he wanted some time to himself...she could see it all over his face. She hated it when he would push her away and go back into moping about the past...or anything else that bothered him. She wanted to be there for him...to protect him from anything that is harming him...to ease his pian. He would only just stay away from her. Only a few times he would tell her things...and once he even cried in her arms. A few years ago...on the anniversary of the family's death.

Doesn't he see that he's not alone? she wondered. I'm here with you 'till the end sevy...that's why I'm here!

Tierria sighed, and moved her mount over to a stand where a man was selling fish wraps. She would buy a few of those for her and Severine. The caravan wasn't moving too fast, so she would be able to catch up with them. Once she got off Alchemy, she saw Gromelson showing a toothless grin at her. Tierria shuddered, and turned her attention to getting her money. There were a few other guards that Voltaire hired. One of them was Gromelson. the others were named Jacques, Iilas, Ducsil, and a young man by the name of Ren who seemed pretty nice compared to the other four.

After buying the wraps, Tierria got on her horse, and hurried back over to the caravan.

The caravan made its way out of Dasai, and went north towards Sharadon forest. For the first few hours, nobody said much to one another, except for the other hired soldiers and Crestus. Severine was mostly in the front with his aj, in deep thought. His black braids were hanging down infront of his face, hiding his eyes. Tierria had given him some fish wraps, and he thanked her as best as he could.

Mostly, The Ivory Fox was running through Severine's mind. He thought about just how deadly she could be. His father was a great swordsman, the best in the clan, and a good one compared to other Shendar men. The Halo name was a popular one among the Shendar tribe, and so was the sword. When Steelwind would practice with the sword, it was like watching poetry in motion. Everything he did seem like he was a true master of the sword. The blade would have a faint blue glow to it from time to time as well. Severine always wondered what that was...

Taking the sword out of its sheath, Severine raised the sword to the sun, looking at his reflection from the blade. His eyes squinted a bit in concetration...looking into the eyes that were part of his reflection on the sword...

Severine

Severine stopped dead in his tracks with Rosebud.

"What in the name of Baveras..."

Did he just hear his father's voice?

Shaking his head, Severine continued moving along.

Tierria stared at the area that was around the caravan in silence. For hours nobody had said a thing. Crestus estimated within the next day they should be near the middle of Sharadon forest if they kept moving.

Tierria looked at Phiona, who was at the end of the caravan. The woman as mostly to herself, as well as Zeadon, who was closer to the dark skinned girl.

Getting sick of all this silence, Tierria moved her steed closer to Crestus to try and talk to him.

"Hello" said Tierria.

"Hello there young lady" said Crestus from one of the wagons. "Are you feeling okay?"

"I'm feeling fine. This scenery is great! A great substitue for the desert..."

"Heh. Well I've been past this area many of times. With going back and forth to Sheren village and all."

"Really? So you had other people guard your caravans?"

"Why yes. But some usually don't end up coming back. Instead, they stay with the mercenaries and help out. Hopefully you all could do the same..."

There was something in Crestus' voice at the end of the setence that worried Tierria a bit, but she didn't let it bother her much.

"Maybe we will...maybe we will..."

Post by: Phiona Whitefire on August 07, 2003, 06:06:22 PM
Phiona took a sip of cool water from her canteen, all the while keeping a wary eye on the passing terrain.  Capping the leather wrapped container, she hung the strap over the pommel of her saddle within easy reach.  The casual motion of her horse as it obediently followed along behind the caravan left her hands free for such an activity, although she kept the reins handy just is case.  Brushing a strand of hair off her forehead, she brought her scrutiny back to the wagon-train ahead of her.

Phiona had kept to the rearguard thus far in the first leg of travel.  There were several reasons for this, but the main one was she wanted to keep watch on everyone in the caravan and keeping all of them in front of her was the easiest way to accomplish this feat without drawing too much attention to herself.  She'd guarded other caravans in the past, but this one had a different feel to it.  Her gut instinct told her not to trust what she saw before her.... that all was not as it seemed.  She had no clue what was wrong, other than the behaviour of the other guards.

This impression creeped up on Phiona shortly after the start of the journey, right after she met the other caravan guards- Gromelson was the most obvious, it wasn't his unfortunate appearance that bothered her, but his dubious manner that was so disconcerting.  Jacques, Lilas and Ducsil seemed nothing less than pirate-like in their demeanor although as the youngest, Ren seemed to have more redeeming mannerisms than the others.  Phiona didn't like the way they leered at Tierria and, yes, even herself.  She'd brandished her own weapon more than a few times at the most lecherous two- Jacques and Ducsil.  Zeadon did not appear to be in that group and, in a way, Phiona was glad someone else in the guard wasn't.  At least she hoped he wasn't.

Gromelson was obvious the leader of that crude bunch, another point that bothered Phiona since the man had outright challenged Severine before they'd even started out.  That pack was borderline nefarious and she wondered why Voltaire, as an experienced merchant, hadn't noticed.  Phionia then wondered how much they would listen to Voltaire should a critical issue arise.  She had no doubt that such an instance would happen... and when it did, she'd be ready.

Her thoughts turned to Severine: How he stood up for Tierria!  There was no doubt he loved the exotic beauty, and she, him.  Phiona sighed, remembering that once several years back, she too had loved someone with the same intensity... but that love had turned sour.  She forced her thoughts away from the bad memories and back to the handsome and noble Severine-  Phiona hadn't seen him since he rode to the head of the caravan several hours ago.  Tierria, too, had rode past shortly after the caravan had set out.  Phiona had nodded another greeting to the young woman as she went by, but Phiona hadn't seen much of Tierria since, presumably she was sticking toward the front of the caravan, close to her champion.  Phiona couldn't blame her for that.  For the most part, Phiona had not talked directly to anyone so it wasn't like she would be excellent company anyway.

All this pondering was making her thirsty, so Phiona reached for her canteen again.

Tying his hair back, Severine stared up at the sky and that the evening sky was beginning to take its shift for today. He was done being to himself, and turned back to see how the others were doing. Phiona was still behind the group, drinking from her canteen every so often. Tierria was talking to Crestus and Ren from time to time, Zeadon was to himself, and the other guards were talking to each other about random things. Mostly about women.

Severine made sure to check on Tierria just in case anything happened, and everytime he did, Gromelson would glare at him. Severine just stared back, his eyes giving him a calm, but vicious look. That was enough to make the lecher look the other way. Ren, who stared at to scene every so often would laugh quietly. Severine saw this, and grinned back at the young mercenary whenever Gromelson wasn't looking. Ren alright in his mind, which made Severine figure that he wasn't exactly 'part' of their lecherous band. He probably just got to know them the same day. Severine also took a look at one of the men who had the horses' regins in one of the caravans. He saw that the man had a nervous look on his face from time to time...as if he wasn't sure about something.

Did he know something that everyone else didn't know? Severine pondered this question for a moment, but thought that he was acting too paranoid again. But the young fighter knew that he had to be alert. Twirling his knife in one hand, he heard Crestus speak out to everyone.

"We'll all stop for tonight!" he shouted. "We are a few miles awa from Sharadon forest! At the break of dawn, we'll eat berakfast and head out right away!"

Severine stopped Robsebud, and veered off the road to the grassy plain. As he got off his mount, and put down his burlap sack, he looked at Phiona. Severine was looking for someone to spar with ever since he left Uderza to test his skills, and she seemed good enough. he also wanted to talk to her about her writing and sketching his sword in her book...to see if she knows something he doesn't. She might even know about The Ivory Fox. When everyone was relaxing, he would talk with her.

Before the caravan stopped, Tierria was enjoying herself with a conversation with Ren. The two talked about grouwing up in their hometowns (Ren was a native of Dasai), their travels thus far, and various other things. The redhead flirted with her from time to time, his charms making her blush. Tierria flirted back in the same demeanor, but that was as far as it went, for they weren't any strong emotions involved. Just shameless flirtation. he saw Severine staring back from time to time, making her think that maybe her long time friend was getting jealous, but when she saw him looking at Gromelson, she knew that it was for her protection. Knowing this mad the young girl feel safe, which allow her to flirt without too much caution with Ren. If only Severine was this much fun!

Once Crestus called for a stop around the evening, Tierria moved with Ren to the side.

"Well lady Selig, I must say that I enjoy your company very much" said Ren, smiling. "I just hope your boyfriend doesn't mind."

"Boyfriend? Nooo...we're just very good friends. Sevy just gets protective of me from time to time..."

Ren lifted her chin a bit. "I can see why. Such beauty doesn't come around much often. That Phiona lady as well..." Ren turned his gaze to the warrior woman. "But she doesn't seem to be the type to take a man's approach lightly, regardless if its serious or innocent."

"I could agree with you on that one..." Tierria looked at Phiona herself. She hadn't said a word ever since Dasai. She wondered what was going on through the woman's mind. She would probably talk to her later. Right now, she needed to see if Severine was okay.

"Excuse me for a moment" she said to Ren, and made her way over to Severine.

"Severine" she said in her most softest voice, as he just put down his sack. "Is everything okay dear? You're more quiet than as of late..."

"Everything is fine 'Ria" Severine answered, and took out a few knives he bought recently from Dasai. "I was wondering about the sword...that's all. When I was holding it...I could've sworn that I heard my father's voice. I'm thinking of talking to Phiona about it...she seem to know some things. Not about the sword necessarily, but maybe certain legends or artifacts. I might even talk to Zeadon. Maybe one of them know something about the White Fox…”

Severine twirled each knife to test how well he could use each. They felt perfect in his hands. Hopefully, he didn’t have to use such well-made weapons on scum as Gromelson and his crew if they tried anything on Tierria…or even Phiona tonight while the women would sleep. But if it came to that, he would attack without hesitation. He figured they knew that, for they kept their distance. Walking over to an old tree trunk, Severine threw two new knives at it with ease, and sat down as he took them out.

Phiona took a moment to study the camp area chosen by Voltaire.  She could see right away that this was a standard stop, presumably used by this and other caravans on a frequent basis.  The treeline was, safely, far enough away to discourage an easy ambush; a healthy looking stream bubbled it's way past within walking distance and there was even a handy pile of wood next to a fairly deep firepit.  She was satitsfied that all was well so far.  It was still light in the sky and she needed some time to herself.  Phiona decided to explore the road ahead.

The nearest person to her was Zeadon.  To him she said, "I'll ride ahead and see that the road is clear.  I'll return shortly."

As the seven, heavily-laden wagons pulled into a tight, easily guarded formation, Phiona lightly tapped her heels into her mare so the spirited animal could run a bit after plodding along at a wagon's pace all day.  Her mount gleefully took to the challenge and they were off in a flash.

The mare carried her all the way to a low, wooden bridge where the stream had doubled back and cut through the roadway.  They had run for a while now and the camp area was far behind.  Phiona slid out of her saddle.  She led the mare to the waters edge for a long drink.  Afterwards Phiona took the saddle, blanket and packs off her mount, rubbing the horse with a suede cloth until her golden coat was dry.  All the while, the burbling stream called to Phiona and all she could think of was having a quick dip in the water.

Letting the mare graze for a bit, Phiona went to the water's edge and stripped.  She dived into the clear water and splashed around some, swimming first upstream then floating at the current's speed back down toward the bridge.  She gazed at the deepening sky, glad she was away from the dry desert, even if it was right next to the ocean.  Climbing out of the chilly water, she found a large, flat rock that was still warm from the sun that was at this time setting beyond the treeline.  The heated rock made an excellent resting spot.  Phiona sat down with a sigh.  A soothing breeze brushed over her skin.  She leaned back, allowing her skin to dry naturally.  She felt refreshed, yet also she felt happy for the first time in days.  Weeks, even.  This alien feeling of contentment washed over her and she suddenly realized that she'd been downcast and alone long enough that she was getting used to it.  Now her feelings were at odds and she wasn't quite sure what to do about it.

Phiona would have liked to stay longer, but duty called.  Guard duty, that is.  She didn't want anyone to worry about her, either.  So, with a small groan of disppointment, she stood and went over to her pack.  She pulled out clean clothing and dressed- a light grey, short sleeved, cotton tunic and black breeches.  Normally she'd wear a white cotton blouse under the tunic, but she suspected the next day would be warm so she stuffed the blouse back into the leather compartment.  On went the leather belt to hold her tunic in place and the legs of her pants were tucked neatly into tall, leather boots, also black.  She gathered up her other clothes, and resaddled the horse.  Allowing the mare her lead on the way back, Phiona pulled out a comb and worked the tangles out of her tawny hair, which did not take long.

She rode back to find the caravan had settled and that someone had heated up a stew over a roaring campfire.  She caught Zeadon's eye and nodded to him, letting him see she had returned.  After she tied her mare by the other horses, she brought her bedroll, weapons and pack and dropped them a couple ped away from Tierria's set up.  Phiona left it all there, except for her sword, which never left her side, and went to find Severine.

Pushing her slightly damp hair back out of her face, she said, "I scouted ahead some.  Looks safe enough.  There's a bridge up the road a ways.  This stream turns back toward the road."  She waved her hand around in a circle to demonstrate the direction.  "Caravan will have to cross it single file, but I think Voltaire knows his way, right?"  She paused a bit, looking toward the campfire before turning back to Severine.

"I may just be me, but something isn't right.  Not the area... that is safe enough."  She lowered her voice, "Its them."  She indicated Gromelson's crew with a nod or her head; the action caused her hair to cascade onto her face and she ran her fingers through her hair to pull it back again.  "I don't trust them."  This Phiona said without emotion, just cool logic.

"I don't trust them."

Severine's eyes became focused on the blade that was twirling in his fingers. His eyes were focused on a small spot that had a very low amount of grass comapred to the area around it. He listened to Phiona's comments and observations closely. It was obvious that she was the only one besides himself that took this whole situation into deep consideration. The other gurads were busy acting like fools, Zeadon was mostly to himself, Crestus was too busy admiring Tierria, and Tierria was too busy admiring Ren, and vice-versa. He hoped that things would continue this way without any hassle...but he knew there had to be something wrong.

"I don't either." Severine threw the knife at the spot he was aiming for.

Deciding that he would pick it up later, Severine removed his light snake armor, revealing his white shirt and blue tunic. "The only thing we can do is be on alert..." Severine took out a fish wrap that he saved for later, and tore a piece of it. "I'm kinda iffy about this whole thing...Crestus seems like the type of person that has con his way out of a few situations in his life. I despise men like him..."

Severine stood up, and took out Halo, swinging it a few times. "But I shouldn't judge too quickly. It always have been a bad habit of mine..."

He turned back to Phiona for a moment. The sky was getting darker, and the camp fires were aleardy set upo by some of the crew. "Once again, I would like to thank you for helping me out back in Dasai. You're a pretty good fighter. I would like to ask you about something. Since you seem like you've been to a few places here and there. Have you ever ehard of the Ivory Fox? I also wanted to ask you about your interest with my sword...and the insscription on it. Maybe you know something I don't..."

Severine approached closer, twirling his sword a bit. A smile began to go over his face. "Of course we could talk about that during sparring....if you don't mind of course?"

She took a step back and watched with veiled admiration as Severine stripped off his armor.  Mmmm.  Is he aware of how fine he looks, I wonder?  But then she thought of him and Tierria and the moment she witnessed between them back at the stables and Phiona pushed such thoughts from her mind.  How could she even consider him that way when important business was at hand?  She felt relieved when Severine drew Halo and practiced a few swings.  Moving backward to give him some room, she left his comments on her fighting talent unanswered.

Phiona's interest perked, though, when Severine began to talk about his blade.  "The Ivory Fox?  What is that... another sword?"  She grinned and looked down at the ground.  "All right, you caught me... I have a passing fascination of magical swords.  And yours is."  Her smile faded.  "But you know that already.  I've--"  She half turned away and unconsciously placed her hand on the hilt of her own sheathed sword.  "-- only seen one other.  A very nasty piece of work, should you ask me.  It was a greatsword, with a blade like the midnight sky, complete with twinkling stars, and the power to steal one's soul... its rumored that each man's death creates a new star, adding power to the sword."  She found herself staring up at the night sky.  "Only a man without a soul can wield such an evil thing."  She finished with a whisper, not caring if her words were heard or not.

She turned a pensive gaze back to Severine who was backlit by the camp's fire; he wanted to spar with her now and she was fine with that.  She drew her own bastard sword and fell into a defensive position, holding her balanced blade in her right hand.  As they began to circle, she said, "I copied the inscription from Halo so I could study it later.  I like weapons.  Magic interests me..."  She chose that moment to feint to the left then swung her blade around, aiming at his right thigh.  She wasn't surprised when he parried the attack with ease.

"So, you can see why Halo, being a combination of the two, would draw my attention."  She stepped back, holding her sword at the ready, parallel to the ground and with both hands covering the long hilt.

"Please.  Don't hold back."

"Please. Don't hold back."

Severine began to untie his hair, letting the braids fall over his eyes. He and Phiona began circling each other, Severine holding his sword with this right hand in a casual position. This was his way of testing his opponent. Severine always treated his sparring partners equally, both man and woman. He never actually been in a real sword fight, nor has he ever fought someone with the Sword of Halo before. He only practiced with it on his own.

"I shall not."

Severine swung low towards Phiona's leg, who easily parried, and struck back. Severine back stepped, and lunged forward with his blade, which Phiona blocked.

"You're a pretty good swordsman Phiona. Or shall i say swordswoman..." Severine smiled to himself. He was always a good sportsman, who didn't mind joking with his opponents every now and then. But with Phiona...he felt like he wanted to flirt with her. Only Tierria was the only other girl he did that with. He guessed it was because Phiona wasn't one of many women who would show sudden interest in him just because they think he looked nice...in order to please their own selves. He wasn't the type of peron to have random encounters with women. Actually, even though he had desires like other men, there were times where he decided that he needed to supress them...

"So...you mind telling me how you learned about this 'other' sword?" Severine blocked an attack from Phiona, and got into a defensive position. "I figured there's something special about this sword of mine...but I can't really pin point what..." After getting no response from her, Severine pushed his blade up against hers as the two drew close.

Severine could feel something in his spirit...something that wanted to be unleashed as his body brushed up against hers. The thrill of the battle...and the beauty of his opponent. Stopping himself for a moment, Severine recieved a kick to his side, which made him back up. Looking at Phiona, and seeing that she was serious, Severine grinned. That's how he wanted it. Back in his defensive position, Severine was waiting to switch to the offensive once Phiona attacked. He paid no mind to the cheers and jeers coming from people who watched. Watching Phiona closely, Severine waited patiently for her move.  His eyes followed her body's every move...from the waist up. Surprisingly, the feelings that he was feeling that he normally held back (he knew that something had to be wrong...they always felt more animalistic rather than 'normal') he kept inside of him.

Once he saw Phiona's curvey hips moved slightly for an attack, Severine parried quickly with an offensive move, and he kicked the sword from her hands. With his palms sweating, he pointed Halo at her, grinning. His hair was covering his right eye.

"Nice match."

Tierria sat next to ren near the fire to watch the fight. She always found Severine his sexiest when fighting or practicing with his weapons. Blushing at this thought, Tierria closed her journal, which she was writing in a bit earlier.

"They both are doing pretty good. Crestus choose well." She heard Ren speaking.

Looking at him, she smiled. "Yes, they do seem like good swordsmen." Looking back at the fight, Tierria started to feel a little bothered with the way Severine and Phiona were looking at each other. But most of all, she seemed bothered by Severine. There goes that look in his eyes again...like as if he hungered for something. Was it battle? Lust? This always confused Tierria...and even worried her a bit. This side of Severine...it was nothing like him. Even though it made him seem very attractive to an extent...still, it was out of the ordinary.

This had to be the side of him that Severine was hiding. When the battle was over, Tierria stood up, and starighten out the rest of her things, instead of talking about the battle like everyone else.

Sparks flew as the two blades slid along their edges, ending locked hilt against hilt.  For several longs moments they pressed against each other, each vying to master the fight.  This was the closest Phiona had been to Severine in the short time she knew him and she was unnerved by the look in his eyes, less than a fore away from hers yet still shrouded in shadow.  She knew his height gave him an advantage and that she couldn't hold off his strength for much longer... so she jabbed him in the side with her knee, just hard enough to break them apart.

Breathing hard, she glared at him.  Severine merely shined a smile back at her before dropping back to a more conservative stance.  She paused, sizing up the situation, before lunging forward with her sword held in one hand.  He parried, then spun and kicked the blade from her grip.  It flew off to the side and landed in a puff of dry dirt.  She looked back at Severine to see the point of his blade within a palmspan from her thoat.

He was still grinning though his eyes were hidden in shadow.  "Nice match."

Retreating a step or two, Phiona bowed low in recognition of his mastery in swordplay.  She came back up with Seveine's discarded dagger and flung it at him- it flew past his neck by a mere nailsbreadth and stuck in the tree behind him, the short blade fully embedded in the trunk.

Now it was her turn to smile.  "Saying a fight is over does not mean it is so.  Remember that not everyone is so honorable as you, Severine."  She ignored the jibes coming from Ducsil and Jacques, and went to retrieve her weapon.  Phiona returned just as Severine pulled his dagger from the tree.

"About the black blade:  It is dubbed Iniquitus and it is wielded by a heartless man called Marlus Blackwine.  Last I saw him, he was in service to the royals and commanding their armies."  She shook her head, "What were they thinking in putting such a man in charge of their troops?"  She sheathed her sword after wiping the dusty blade on her trouser leg.

Phiona turned away so she wouldn't betray any emotion to Severine.   What about me? I almost fell in love with that detestable lout.    "It was because of him that I left the army.  When I joined up, it meant something.  I was a fool..."

((OOC: LOL...that last post was funny as hell. Short...but straight to the point.lol))

Severine went over to the tree to retrive one of his daggers. he felt himself slowly recovering from his 'battle rush'. While Phiona talked about the sword, Severine listened closely. He then put Halo back in its sheath, and put his dagger away as well. Tying his hair back, Severine started putting away his things, and made sure Rosebud was okay.

The man sounds as evil as the sword, Severine thought to himself. But then again, my uncle always told me that a weapon always reflected upon a man's soul.

Severine then started thinking about the story he heard about his ancestor, Tielier Halo. He was the only person who was said to use The Sword of Halo for 'evil' purposes. Then there were family members who said that his views might've been considered harsh, but he meant good. Word has it that he tried to use the blade to take over the entire Shendar tribe because of disputes with the other clans. Leona Halo, the next person who would wield the blade ended up killing her own brother with the help of a Farlik and a Strumwind. She was one of two women who used the sword. She was also the oldest person to wield the blade in terms of first time usage.

Wasn't she 43? Thought Severine, and sat by one of the camp fires that was made. He was next to Tierria and Ren. He then looked back at Phiona. As his eyes moved over to her, he saw that Zeadon was looking at them funny ever since the fight began. Only Baveras would know what goes through that man's head...

Seeing that mostly everyone decided to get some rest after eating, Severine agreed with their idea and lied his head on his burlap sack. Staring into the flickering flames, Severine soon fell asleep.

Tierria stared closely at Severine's movements after the fight. Ren was talking to her, but it was mostly about how tired he was and how surprisingly good the food Crestus brought with him was. She didn't paid attention too much, just only enough to get a general idea of what he was talking about. Tierria was about to say something to Severine when he came over, but he was once again in deep thought.

If that boy goes any deeper I swear he'll drown himself, Tierria thought, pouting a little.

She could tell that her friend was feeling tired. It seemed like the fight and the long journey thus far took energy out of him...but she could sense there was something else that required for him to use his vigor.

Only giving him a small smile, Tierria watched as he lied down, and soon went to sleep. She figured she should do the same. They had a long day tomorrow, and she could use some rest. She didn't know what the gods had in store for them from here on, but one thing she knew.

She was going to need Severine by her side, and he was going to need her by his.

Seeing that Ren had his back to her and making snoring noises, Tierria lied back to star up at the sky. Lilas was the first to stand watch with Duscil. Crestus surprisingly didn't ask Severine. Must be cause Gromelson and his men agreed to do night watch the moment Crestus mentioned that he was paying extra for that.

Greedy lechers, Tierria thought to herself and soon found herself in the world of slumber.

Where am I?

A dark sky was over a barren field. Bodies were lying everywhere, a dark pool of blood from each. Swords and spears were pointing out from each of their owners. Severine's vision showed him all of this horrific night scenery, but this was a dream that didn't show him...only what was before his very eyes.

Or at least that's what he thought.

As the scene went along showing the bodies, Severine recognized only a few. The ones that he could tell easily was the bodies belonging to Phiona and Zeadon. A strong wind began to pick up as the scene grew closer and closer to a far away figure standing on a hill. The figure was holding what seemed to be a lifeless body. Nothing would prepare Severine for what he was about to see.

Once in close enough range, the scene showed Severine holding a lifeless Tierria...covered in blood. Even though his braids covered most of his face...Severine could see the red glow in his eyes...the drool coming from his open mouth...the look of madness...destruction...lust. The latter could be told by Tierria's ripped clothing, exposing some of her most personal of assests. The same went with a few other females...including Phiona.

For a moment, Severine thought that he and the Severine in this nightmare was staring into each other's eyes. The Severine in the nightmare raised a sword high in the air...staring at Tierria.

A taste of things to come...

The blade of the sword went straight for Tierria's neck.

"No!!"

Severine quickly awkened, covered in sweat. He sat up, barely seeing what's before him because of the hair that's in front of his face. Wondering how it could've been untied, Severine pushed it from his face.

"Kid, are you okay?"

Severine saw Jacques staring at him in a weird way. He was playing cards with a caravan driver and Gromelson. Severine looked at him for a moment before answering.

"I-I'm fine...thanks for asking..." Severine was on his back again, not going to sleep for the rest of the night.

What the hell is happening to me?

Tierria awakened to find the sunlight upon her face. Looking around, she could still see some of the caravan members asleep. Duscil and Lilas were awake, cooking some breakfast. Crestus was running about, making sure things was in order. As for Ren, he was no where in her sights.

Probably bathing, Tierria thought. After smelling herself, she figured she needed to bathe too. She heard there was a stream further down the road, so she guessed she would ride Alchemy over to that area.

"Good morning Sevy," she said to the Shendar boy, who was staring up at the sky. Looking at him, she figured he was doing that for quite sometime. "I'm going to bathe in a bit..." Tierria smiled. "You're welcomed to to come along if you like..." seeing that she managed to crack a smile, Tierria got up.

As she went over to her things to get her blue skirt and top, Tierria wondered to herself if Phiona would abthe with her. They were the only two females in the group, and she didn't trust some of these men after all...

After the sparring match was over, Severine went about his own business.

Phiona stood where she was and looked up in the the night sky as it grew ever darker.  Eventually, she returned to her bedroll and pack.  As she crouched down on one knee to untie the bundle, she glanced over at Tierria.  The young woman was sitting and chatting with Ren near the fire.  She seemed so happy and carefree, perhaps because she was so sure of her bond with Severine.  Phiona felt a twinge of jealousy then.  It had been a long time since Phiona herself felt that way, but that wasn't all- she was drawn to Severine.  He was different from most men she'd met.  He had a manner about him that made Phiona want to know what he was thinking inside.  She sighed and unrolled her bedding.  Sitting down, she pulled her pack closer.  After a moment's pause, she pulled out her journal and writing implements.  She lay down on her tummy with her book open in front of her, facing away from the fire so the yellow light would illuminate the pages.

~~~
I left Dasai this morning in the employ of one Crestus Voltaire, merchant and owner of a large caravan.  Severine was also hired as a guard and he brings along Tierria, his lover and traveling companion.  The day was a long one, fore the seven wagons in the caravan travel slowly and Voltaire seems to be in a great hurry to reach the village of Sheren.  Our route leads us through the Sharadon forest.  Though I am familiar with the eastern regions of the forest, I haven't even seen it this far west.  From the Dune's innkeeper I learned that Voltaire hires many guards and that most do not return.  I have a very bad feeling about this whole endeavor.  The other guards are overtly shady and lecherous: Gromelson, is their leader; Ducsil; Jacques; Lilas.  There are two other guards who seem more reliable:  Ren is young and naive; while Zeadon, a scarred warrior who speaks even less than I do, if that's possible.  Tomorrow we enter the forest and we'll need to be on our best guard for the bandits that Voltaire worries about.  I cannot sleep unless someone I trust is keeping watch...
~~~

Phiona paused, tempted to write more but thought better of it.  Of course, she could always add more words later, if needed.  She sprinkled a bit of drying powder on the page and then blew it away before safely closing the journal.  After her things were stowed in the pack she took a look around to see who was on guard duty.  Seeing it was Lilas and Ducsil, Phiona knew she'd have a difficult time falling asleep.

Phiona's stomach growled at her, reminding her that she hadn't eaten since breakfast.  Getting up off her bedroll, Phiona wandered over to the banked fire to see if anything was left.  In the provisions crate, she found some cheese, bread and green apples.  Next to the fire, a pot held some very strong, lukewarm tea.  This fare was good enough for her, so she sat and began to eat, watching the 'guards' warily.  She, too, was on guard though not officially.

Hours after she finished eating, she got up and moved to her bedroll.  Bleary-eyed, she crawled into the bedding.  Slipping a dagger under the covers, she finally fell asleep with her hand tightly gripping the hilt.

Phiona woke again shortly before sunrise.  It never mattered how late she retired to sleep, her years in the royal army gave her this habit.  Stretching first, she got up and looked around to see everyone preparing to leave.  With practiced efficiency, Phiona had her gear ready to go in only a few minutes.  The last thing she did was place her dagger in sheath within her right boot.  Taking her gear with her, she checked on her horse and fed the animal some oats.  She saddled the mare and attached the pack, bedroll and saddlebags.

After all was ready, Phiona went back to the campsite to get some breakfast.  She saw Severine still lying down and she also noted that he'd slept near the young woman.   But of course...   Phiona shook her head and pushed away the new envy that threatened to overtake her.   Keep your mind on business, nothing more...  Phiona walked closer by Tierria, who was pulling some clothes out of her bag.

"Did you sleep well?"  Phiona looked up at the blue sky, the same one that kept Severine's attention so well.  "Should be fine weather the whole day.  I hope.  Nothing is more miserable than rain through the leaves."  She glanced over at the campfire, and it looked like grilled sausages would be the morning meal.  Already the aroma was permeating the area.

Severine sat up, tying his hair back. Standing up, the young man went over to where Lilas, Crestus and a caravan driver was cooking breakfast. The aroma of sausage was starting to get to him.

"Morning" he said to Zeadon, who remained silent as usual.

A no talk, all action kind of person I see, Severine thought to himself when he heard no response. Fine with me.

Crestus looked up at Severine, seeing his shadow over him. "Good morning Sir Halo!" he greeted, happy as usual. "Today's a fine day for traveling, don't you think?"

"Everyday is a fine day for traveling..." said Severine, rceieving a plate of sausages from the caravan driver. "Just as long as you get to where you're going..."

Crestus laughed, and patted Severine on the back. "I like you young man. Your way of thinking is like that of a nomad..."

"I come from a tribe of nomads" said Severine, leaving the left side of his hair hiding the grin he had on his face from Voltaire. Going over to where Phiona and Tierria were, Severine took a bite of one of his sausages. He would share his with the women just in case if Crestus ran out of any.

"Morning ladies" said Severine, cheerfully. Deep down inside he tried to get rid of the remains of last night's dream surfacing in his head. "Would any of you like a sausage?"

Tierria looked up and smiled. She was surprised that Phiona was talking to her. She was surprised that the woman was talking to anybody for that matter. Well anybody but Severine that is...

Tierria, just get over it! she thought to herself.

"Morning Phiona" Tierria greeted back. "I slept well, thank you very much. I'm about to go bathe...would you like to come along? I figure even you could use some relaxation from all the raging mmale hormones..." her smiled turn to a devious grin when she shall Severine coming over. "Speaking of which..." After Severine greeted her and asked if she wanted a sausage she stood up with her clothes.

"I'm not going to eat now Mr. dueling sword person. After I bathe." she then turned to Phiona. "Coming?"

Severine crossed his arms, and grinned.

"Have it your way then. I can see that women need their time from us men..."

Even though Severine did his best to joke, just looking at Tierria reminded him of what he did to her in the nightmare. Looking past Tierria, he caught a glimpse of Phiona.

"Morning" he said to her.

Why was she in the dream? he wondered to himself. There is no way that this could be a premonition...

Severine's grin quickly faded. "Sorry..." he said in a low voice to Phiona to cover himself up. "Just not feeling all too well..." Severine turned, and walked away.

Severine took off rather quickly when Phiona walked up, something the tawny-haired warrior did not miss.  After he left, she turned to Tierria.  The young woman was still rummaging through her bag, apparently trying to figure out what to wear.  Phiona listened quietly as Tierria talked, the young woman's voice was soothing to listen to.

When Severine returned again bearing a plateful of sausages in offering to Tierria, she declined.  He set the plate down near her bag anyway as they bantered with strong familiarity.  They were so jovial and caring toward each other, it was sweet to watch.

Then Severine looked past Tierria to Phiona and his smile faded away.  To Phiona he said only a brief hello and an apology for feeling ill.  He walked off before Phiona could reply.  What had happened since last night to make his attitude toward her change? She wondered, but knowing that Tierria was waiting for her reply, Phiona said, "Sure.  I know just the place."

They gathered their mounts and Phiona took a last look around to see where everyone was.  The only person she couldn't locate was Ren.  Thinking back, she couldn't remember seeing him at all this morning, but then she hadn't been specifically looking for him either.  The two women rode up the wide, dusty path that served as a road in these parts and eventually the bridge came into sight.  The sound of freely rushing water had reached them long before the stream was in sight.

Leaving the horses to graze on sweet grass, they took what they needed with them to the waters edge.  Bees buzzed by and butterflies flitted from flower to flower.  Birdsong filled the air, and the stream was as clear and inviting as Phiona had left it the night before.

She warned Tierria, "It'll be cold."  Phiona grinned and added, "but I like that!"

While the beautiful, darkskinned Stratanian carefully unwound the white wrap that held her raven ponytail in place, Phiona quickly stripped to nothing.  She tossed her clothing to the ground for easy retrieval.  With a yelp of anticipation, Phiona dived into the swiftly running water.  The lighter-skinned, Avennorian warrior didn't seem to be hampered by modesty at all, a stark contrast to her breviloquence.  Though she splashed about in the chilly, clear water, Phiona had purposefully left her sheathed sword within easy reach and she kept an alert eye out for danger.  Two women bathing alone were a ripe target for attack, she knew this much.

In the meantime Tierria had brought a smaller, leather pouch with her to the waters edge.  Perched on the same flat rock that Phiona had rested on the night before, Tierria removed all but her silver amulet, folding her clothes neatly into a pile next to her.  She proceeded to dip a small cloth into an open, clay pot and to this she added some water to work the salve into a thick lather.  At first, Phiona thought it was odd that the young woman hadn't jumped into the cold water like she did, but then she remembered that the people of the desert had different reservations toward water, and therefore bathing.  In the desert, large bodies of water were conserved for drinking and must be kept pristine at all costs.

Phiona swam closer and clung to a rock nearby Tierria, slowly kicking her legs in the clear water.  "That smells nice," she said, indicating the soapy lather.  "What's in it?"

Tierria smiled, "The base is made from the heart of a certain cactus plant mixed with rendered fat... scented with a variety of desert flowers.  I made it myself.  You learn how to make all kinds of useful things when you are trained to be a healer.  Here try some... you can work it into you hair and then rinse it in the stream."  She held the clay pot up for Phiona to see.

Phiona smiled shyly, "Really?  I shall try it then then."  She held out her hand while the young healer placed a dallop on her palm.  Phiona dunked her head in the water again and then lathered the soap into her long hair.  She was amazed at the volume of bubbles that came from the small amount.  It smelled even nicer up close, and with her eyes closed, Phiona could almost imagine reclining in a patch of wild, desert flowers on a cool night.  After she dunked her head a few more times to rinse, Phiona noticed that Tierria was leaning over the stream to splash water up to her lathered skin.

Clinging again to the rock, Phiona asked, "You can swim, can't you?  It'll be easier to rinse if you come in--"

"Oh no!  Really, I couldn't--"

"Don't worry, I won't let you drown."  Phiona smiled to reassure the Stratanian woman.  She suspected then that Tierria couldn't swim, but really, where would the girl have a chance to learn?

"Well, all right..."  Tierria eased herself off the flat rock and into the cold water, but held fast to the rock.  "Ooh!  It is very cold!"

"That's fine.  Now back up here the water is more shallow.  You can stand, see?"  Phiona swam around Tierria and led her a bit up the stream.  "All safe."

When Phiona stood up out of the waist-high water, she casually grabbed her long hair to twist the water out of it, a habit after swimming.  With her back to Tierria, Phiona couldn't see the healer's face when Tierria beheld the series of thick, criss-crossing scars that covered the warrior's back from nape to the waterline, and probably lower even.  The scars were long healed, but the look of horror over such cruel wounds was matched by Tierria's gasp of shock.

Phiona quickly spun around, checking the surrounding area to see if they were being ambushed, only to see Tierria's look of sympathy and green, tearfilled eyes.  Phiona flushed to a dusky rose hue before climbing out of the water.  Without a word she strode over to her towel to dry off.

The healer watched her walk off.  Taking some time to gain her composer, Tierria finished rinsing and then followed suit.

"What happened, Phiona?  Where did you get those terrible scars?"  Tierria's voice trembled a little as she asked the questions.

By now, Phiona was already dressed and working the tangles out of her damp, tawny hair with a comb. She noted that the snarls came out a lot easier and that it must be the soap.  Her hair still smelled of flowers too.  Tierria was standing close by waiting for an answer.  Phiona couldn't just ignore her.

She stopped combing.  "Where I come from, this is what happens when you don't obey orders.  Come on, get dressed and I'll tell you about it on the way back to camp.  I hope they saved us some sausage..."

A short time later, they were heading south.  "A few years back, I was in the royal army that guards the Sanguia province.  On the eastern side of the Sharadon forest, is a small town called Seraia.  There was an uprising there and we were sent to quell the rebellion.  The people didn't feel they were being protected enough by the local army so most of them refused to pay the taxes."

"Our commander was a cruel man named Blackwine.  He decided to punish the rebels by beating their families while they were forced to watch.  Torchering the elderly and little babes, too... I refused to do it.  I did not think that the children should suffer for their fathers' choices.  And so Blackwine made an example of me in case any of my fellow soldiers agreed with me.  Can't have dissension in the ranks, you see."  She paused and glanced over at Tierria who was looking sullen and her lovely green eyes, watery.  "Look... it happened long ago.  I try not to let it encompass my life.  Please don't pity me, I don't.  This opened my eyes.  I might be a very different person if I were still under his command."

They were within shouting distance of the caravan now, and the horses were being hitched to the wagons.  Phiona reached over in a rare show of emotion and patted the healer's shoulder.  "Let's hurry and get some breakfast."  She prompted her mare to run ahead, riding right into the middle of camp.

Tierria quickly followed the woman into the middle of the camp. She did her best to hold back her emotions, so none of the men would notice. It was injustice...what happened to Phiona...pure injustice. She would keep this to herself, and not tell anybody what Phiona told her. She figured the woman would want as much.

Such ugly scars upon such a beautiful and noble woman, thought Tierria to herself. Is this the natural law of Caelereth!? To tarnish the good and glorify the evil!!?

Tierria began feeling bad about having negative feelings towards the woman in the beginning...just because she showed some interest in Severine. Her jealousy over took her...she was no better than those who caused harm. As a healer, this went against her beliefs. Only when it was needed would she cause wounds...usually she would cure them. Actually, she never caused a wound upon another in her life. She intended to keep it that way as well. Sighing at this, Tierria got off her mount with Phiona, and went to get some breakfast. She saw Ren handing out the raminder of the food to others.

"I'm not trying to bring up the subject again or anything," said Tierria to Phiona. "But it was wrong what happened. For what you did...you will always be a true hero in my heart. As with Severiune as well..." Tierria paused for a moment. "Ever since his family was murdered during a fire when he was twelve, Severine always held this feeling of vengence deep inside him. This feeling of depression and lonliness. I do my best to try to ease his pain...he's a good person deep down inside. I mean I know I act like his lover at times, which I am not...but I just want to help him, that's all. He's been there for me so many times..." Tierria stared at Severine, who was just about done eating. "I want to return the favor. Friends help one another..." Tierria turned to Phiona. "Please don't tell him I told you this. I just figured you seem like you wanted to get to know him better. Looking into his eyes...you think to yourself and wonder about that boy. So many things could be going through his head...I don't think I even know more than half of whaty is Severine Halo..." Tierria sighed. "But I have this little feeling that the other half I might regret finding out. But that's just my intuition of paranoia kicking in." Tierria ending that sentence with a small laugh. "Well, forget about the past, and move on to the future, that's what my grandfather used to say!"

Severine munched down on the last piece of sausage. He spotted Tierria and Phiona arriving back from bathing. He decided not to approach the two of them yet, and instead gathered his things. Crestus mentioned that as soon as the last piece of food was gone, the caravan would set out once again. Putting back on his snake skin armor, Severwent over to Rosebud, to make make everything was fine with his animal companion.

Feeling bad about earlier, Severine decided to set his mind on the events from alst night. There was no doubt that Phiona was a good swordswoman. He was very surprised that he beat her. He really had no fighting experience in real battles...only battles against his uncle and friends of the family who would travel by. They were hard training sessions without a doubt, and Severine would end up with more than one opponent sometimes. Uncle Lelor said that Severine always did have a natural talent for swordplay. Just like his father...

The great Steelwind Halo, Severine thought in a joking manner, bring back some light to his eyes. Well...everyone around him thought that he was great...especially mother...

Severine fastened his bracers around his wrists as Crestus called for everyone to get together once breakfast was over. Taking out his rose pendent from underneath his shirt, Severine began touching it with his fingers, and sighing to himself.

Mother...father...your deaths shall be avenged. Whatever that nightmare was...I'll overcome it. Anything that stands in my way...I will conquer it. Nothing will stop me...nothing...

After eating with Phiona, Tierria got her things together and mounted Alchemy. Fifteen minutes later, the caravan was on the move. This time, Tierria was a little bit closer to Phiona, who she wish she would get to know more about. After that talk at the lake, Tierria felt more comfortable to be around her.

Now only if that Zeadon character would follow her example, Tierria thought with a laugh.

She noticed that Severine took the front as usual. He was always the type that would be in the front of a group...she told him many of times that he would make a good leader. His response to that was a laugh, and saying that everyone told him that he would be a good leader...

Just like his father... Tierria finished the sentence in her head.

The girl had her eyes on Severine still, barely noticing that the caravan was five minutes away from Sharadon forest. From the distance...she could've sworn that someone was watching. She heard that elves lived in this forest from Crestus, but they rarely came out of their village...or wouldn't go too far from it.

Not letting suspicion get the best of her, Tierria kept eyeing Severine.

Phiona took up her place at the rear of the caravan once again and this time, to her surprise, Tierria chose to keep her company.  Since they had set out toward Sharadon forest, there'd been no talking between them, just a comfortable silence.

In between warily watching the passing scenery, Phiona glanced out of the corner of her eye at the Stratanian healer who's eyes were on the road ahead.  The treeline of the Sharadon was drawing ever closer.  She had, this morning, revised her opinion of the young woman.  But Tierria seemed to have gotten the wrong impression from her and the warrior wasn't sure how best to remedy it:  One thing Tierria had said during breakfast was bothering Phiona: For what you did...you will always be a true hero in my heart.  It would be wrong for her to let Tierria go on believing that Phiona had saved the day.

Best to just get on with it!  Phiona looked pointedly at Tierria.  "What I said this morning... I'm afraid I might have misled you.  I did not stop what happened in Seraia.  I couldn't.  It was only delayed while they dealt with my objection."  She couldn't help but feel bitter about the treatment she received back then.  The only blessing that came from it all was that when the soldiers carried on with their orders, Phiona was too unconscious from her beating to hear the screams of the villagers while they endured theirs.  Phiona was not proud of what happened that day, her actions did not alleviate their pain and caused her even more.  She was ashamed to be associated with such an organization, even if they called themselves The Royal Sanguia Patrol.  In Phiona's mind, there was nothing regal about picking on innocent people.

"I know what they did was wrong.  That's why I left them as soon as I was able.  That day not only scarred me, it shaped my convictions.  I will never stand by and allow such brutal atrocity again, never!  As long as I am breathing... I swear this on my life and soul!"

Tierria smiled warmly at the her new comrade. "Just because you didn't save them...it doesn't mean that you didn't do anything. Your morals and your sense of justice and courage showed that you was different from all the others. It showed that you stood up to that creep Blackwine, and knew when to follow orders and when not to. Heroes can't save innocents all the time...but if they try their best...it shows the forces of evil hat there are people out tere that won't stand for their crimes! That's why you are a hero in my heart..."

Tierria put a soothing hand on Phiona's shoulder. "It would be an honor for me to stand by your side...helping others."

Severine started to drink from his canteen, obsrving the forest scene around him. Earlier, he stared back at Tierria and Phiona from time to time, seing that the two was starting to develop a friendship..at least that's wha he thought. For that...he was happy. He had to admit to himself that h was kind of drawn to Phiona, and making friends with Tierria would make things easier. Thinking about this aspect made him feel better, and forget about the dream.

With the exception of the forest life of Sharadon forest, things were pretty quiet. It felt a little chilly, so Severine wrapped his cloak around his body.

"I've been here so many times..." said Crestus. "And I'm still shockd how beautiful it is. Actually, I'm supose to meet that elf I told you about. We should be coming along the area where he is-"

Crestus was interupted by an arrow flying by him. "What!? Someone is trying to attackus!"

Another arrow flew by Severine. Without hesitation, Severine thre a knif wheer the arrow came from, and heard a man scream in pain. A moment later, a large group of bandits emerged from the bushes, and surrounded the caravan.

Hearing a loud cry from Tierria, Severine tunrned around quickly.

"Tierria!"

Phiona merely nodded in response because her throat abruptly grew tight with emotion.  As if casually scanning for danger, she turned her head to the countryside for her eyes threatened to brim with tears and she did not wish for Tierria to see this weakness.

Much as Phiona had tried to distance herself, this girl had managed to sneak past Phiona's defenses and was fast becoming a friend.  The Avennorian warrior did not make friends easily but, worse, when she did find such remarkable people she tended to lose them after growing attached.  The heartache was nearly too much to bear at times.

Her thoughts inevitably turned to the group of true heroes that she traveled with for over three years and whom she had grown invariably close to.  They were all dead now and the unbearable loss was still too fresh in Phiona's heart and mind.  Her memories of them flashed before her eyes- Donnovan the Emerald Mage and Gildar, his half-elven apprentice; Yohn the Shadowcaller, a hobbit with his merry, blue eyes; Rengan, a skilled warrior who eshewed the use of bladed weapons;  Gillyan Urthguard, a noble dwarven priestess; and Ari Beltrane, aka Hound, the most competant ranger Phiona had ever met- Ari could virtually sniff out her quarry, hence the moniker.  She missed them all terribly.

Phiona maintained her composure and turned back to look at Tierria again, but the young healer had ridden forward and was out of earshot.  The front of the caravan had finally reached the point where the road entered the forest.  Perhaps Tierria wanted to be near Severine, he obviously made her feel safer.

Phiona pushed those thoughts and the ones regarding her past to the back of her mind and searched the treeline for signs of ambush.  She noticed that Jacques, Gromelson and Ren were on guard as well, and she couldn't see anyone else except for Zeadon and Severine.  While they all seemed to be on alert, there wasn't any apparent danger so far...

But a split second later there was a shower of arrows flying through the air!  Tierria cried out as one of the missles nearly hit her arm and another slammed into her mount's flank.  The horse spooked and began to flee the chaos, running forward along forest road and right past the rushing bandits!

The other guards were rushing forward to meet the enemy, some on foot even.  Phiona unsheathed her sword and grabbed her shield.  She kicked her heels to her mare and together they moved into the fight.

"Alchemy! Calm down!" cried Tierria, trying to regain control over her horse.

It figures that Alchemy would be the horse to react in such a manner. The horse has neve been attacked before in its life, nor was it ever used to an ambush like this one. Desparately screaming for her horse to slowdown Tierria tried moving her body sharply to avoid an arrow and ended up falling off Alchemy, and landing down hard on the dirt road. Through small tears did Tierria watch her horse disappear .

"Alchemy..."

"Aww, poor thing!" Tierria sharply turned around to see that three of bandits had turned around and was walking up to her. The one standing in the middle was talking to her.

"You lost your little horsey? We'll get it back for you...when we're done that is.."

Without even thinking, Tierria picked up her staff with her dirt-filled hands, and ran towards he bandit. "Leave me alone!" she cried with all of her might, and smacked the enemy as hard as she could, causing the man to fall on the ground. While his comardes got into defensive positions, the man stood up, wiping blood from his face.

"You little bitch..." he began to say. "You made me bleed..."

Before Tierria could think, a hand went across her face, powerful enough to knock her down. The moment Tierria turned on her back to look up in fear while holding her face, the man pounced on her.

"Just for that, I'll kill you slowly as I ravage your body like the whore you are!" The bandit useed his sword to cut through the cloth, covering Tierria's upper body. Enjoying the girl's screams for a moment while she covered herself, the man then pinned her to the ground.

"Seveine!" screamed Tierria at the top of her lungs, praying that her knight in shining armor would save her. "Severine!"

Severine...please...save me...

Rage.

That was the only word that could describe Severine's feelings at that point. Pure violence-driven rage. Rosebud moved faster than any horse in Sarvonia as Severine raced to Tierria's aid. The scene before his eyes was making a restrained part of his spirit try to free itself a bit more...

"Go to hell!" Severine's knife flew through the air, and struck one of the bandits in the throat. Squatting on his mount, Severine somersaulted through the air, and ran up to the secnd one that accompied the man that was going to face Sevrine's full wrath. With no hesitation, a dagger went across the bandit's neck, sharing a fate similar to his comrade.

As Rosebud turned around to run over to its master, Severine took out his family sowrd, and stabbed it in the man's back, making the blade come out of his chest...reinforced by a strength Severine never knew he had. He then pulled the wepon out of the swine he had just killed, and threw him aside. Taking off his cloak, Severine wrapped his cloak around Tierria, as he sat her up,  and held her close, despite the fact that her face was covered in her attacker's blood. Feeling the girl shake, Severine observed the situation before him:

There were at least 15 bandits from where he could see...probably more. This looked like a well planned ambush. They must have scouted the area, and watched the caravan for awhile. Looking closely, Sevrine remembered one of the men being someone that passed by the caravan an hour before he reached Sharadon forest. He must have been watching them ever since last night! Maybe even before that!

"Go hide" said Severine in an emotionaless voice, as he stood up wth his long time friend in his arms. Paying no attention to the kiss he recieved on the cheek, Severine stepped forward as Tierria ran in the opposite direction to find a suitable hiding spot.

Untying his hand with one hand, Severine held his with the other. He felt energized...he felt powerful...he felt alive.

"They will pay...all of them..."

Rosebud stood by the young Shendar, whose bond he shared with for many years now. Once Severine began running, Rosebud was right beside him. With skill Severine  jumped on the aj, and headed into battle feeling te lust for death and destruction growing from within.

Ripp startled awake to both a woman's and a horse's scream.  He opened his eyes just in time to see the ranger dash off in the direction of the screams.  Leaping to his feet he called out to the  missing member of his group, Elraralia.

"Elraralia! Wherever you are head, head back to camp!  There is fighting on the road!"

Dashing off through the woods in the direction Aiyana head taken off in.  Reaching the road he saw a wild-eyed man run past on the back of Aj'Nuvic, if his memory served him.  A caravan was being harassed by a group of bandits.

Ah battle, fantastic it has been too long.

Diving into a group of 3 of the men he whipped out his Efryst depressing the button that released the two ends.  Grabbing on of these ends he swung out it front of him taking out on of the rogues with a blow to the temple.  Eva then flew from the brush, biting deep into another ones throat.  The last one turned and ran back toward the woods.  Ripp swung his water bag from his hip and squeezed hard a small stream flew out.  Taking control of his he sent it flying to his target, in mid-air it frooze into a icy shard.  The man fell a shard of ice stuck through his back and into his heart.

Ripp then took in the carnage and his Sanhorrhim heritage rose from within him.  Quickly he fell into the battle taking out two more men before stopping to survey the scene.

Aiyana broke through the brush in time to see two black-clothed figures charge out into the clearing, holding broadswords.  Figuring they were bandits, she fired her bow, the arrow sinking into one of the men's exposed neck.  With a scream that was nought more than a gurgle, he fell.  In a lightning-quick action, she pulled another arrow from her quiver, hitting the remaining man.

Just then, a girl ran past her into the wood.  Shouldering her bow and pulling her scimitar, she dove through the thick growth to see the girl shaking and crouching behind a tree.

"What's going on girl?" Aiyana asked in a slightly harsh tone.  She took a tentative step forward, sword at the ready.

Before the girl could reply, a man broke through the bush.  A man in black.  He lashed out at Aiyana, and, as pain shot through her arm and into her head, Aiyana realized she had been hurt.

"Son of a-"

Without finishing her sentence, Aiyana parried the man's second blow with one hand, her other reaching for a dagger which she plunged into his stomach, only to find armor hidden under his clothing.  Ducking and breaking away from the parry, she swung in a horizontal arc.  With a sick thud, the sword cut halfway through the man's neck.  His eyes rolled, and he fell.

She turned back to the girl.

"Are you all right?"

"Are you alright?"

Tierria stared up at the woman before her. From the looks of it, she was elven. Standing up, the girl gave a small bow.

Post by: Phiona Whitefire on August 17, 2003, 06:06:22 AM
As she rode forward, Phiona caught sight of a scuffle by the fifth wagon.  It was Lilas and Ren fighting back to back and on foot, surrounded by a group of brigands.  Phiona rode past them on her mare, kicking one bandit square in the back and knocking him onto the point of Ren's dinged longsword.  She did not stop to watch the dying man slide off Ren's weapon to the ground, nor to see that, as Ren's sword was currently occupied, the young red-haired man could not block an incoming swordstroke from yet another nearby brigand!  Ren grunted in pain, his lung pierced, and fell back against Lilas who spun around, grabbed the young, caravan guard, and proceeded to use Ren as a shield to protect his own miserable hide!

Controlling her mount by touch, Phiona quickly wheeled the mare around and slashed at another villain only to have her attack parried by the man.  Weapons engaged, Phiona kicked him hard in the jaw instead.  He fell back and was replaced by two more attacking ambushers, one of which moved forward with a dagger and began to cut at a saddle strap.  Phiona brought her shield down with a clang on that one's head, stunning him for a moment or two.  But the distraction was enough for the other man to unhorse Phiona, grabbing her leg and pulling her to the ground!  On her back and with her sword pinned, she kneed her attacker in the groin.  When he backed away, moaning in pain, she rolled back and onto her feet with weapon and shield still in hand.

She took a moment to breathe and assess the situation.  The surrounding bedlam and tumult was disheartening at best.  There seemed to be more brigands than people in the caravan... and that was not counting those hidden in the woods!  The front wagon was being driven off, almost lost to sight, and Phiona couldn't see Voltaire or Tierria anywhere!  Arrows were still flying intermittantly from the trees into the fray, but not so much now because of the number of bandits in the fight.  The miscreant archers were having to move closer for accuracy, which was dangerous for both them and their targets!

She heard a cutoff scream close by and spun in time to see her mare trampling the man Phiona had kneed seconds ago.  Beyond that sight, she finally saw how Lilas was misusing the now-unconsious Ren!  With a low growl of ire, Phiona skirted her angry mount and parried four swordstrokes from various attackers in her effort to reach the unloyal caravan guard, but she didn't had a chance to bestow justice for Lilas was, just then, shot in the back by three arrows in short order!  Gurgling blood from his mouth, he fell to his knees, dropping Ren first and then falling onto his inert human-shield.

The three villains who had been harrying Lilas turned on Phiona instead, quickly surrounding her.  They began to circle her, sizing her up and taunting her with indecent and raunchy jibes.  Her eyes narrowed, she watched them heedfully and kept moving, slashing her blade here and there to keep them back.  In this type of close fight with multiple attackers, Phiona's shield hampered her, so she hastily shrugged it off her arm and then effortlessly flung it at the tallest of the three, catching him in the neck.  He backed away choking from the strike and Phiona quickly spun around to parry the other two men for they had tried to get at her while she was distracted.  She wasn't fast enough, as one of them managed to grab a fistful of her hair .  He yanked on her hard, pulling her off-balance.  She caught a glimpse of Voltaire trying to flatten his rotund form atop the nearest wagon, hiding from the fight, but she didn't have time to contemplate his lack of courage.

Her throat exposed and her back arched, she desperately  tried not to let him pull her down to the ground.  If the brigand succeeded, she might not be able to recover in time and the fight would be over!  Thinking fast, Phiona flipped her bastard sword around, reversing her hold on the hand and a half hilt, and stabbed the villain in his gut... a maneuver that sliced her own tunic open just above her belt.  As she'd hoped, he let loose her hair.  Phiona turned and twisted the blade, extracting a high-pitched squeal of agony from the man.

With her right boot, she kicked him off her blade and turned to see her one, remaining attacker, a young man who was barely out of childhood.  She knew his inexperience was the only reason she was still alive for he had every chance to kill her only moments before.  But now, his bloodlust evaporated, to be replaced by fear and hesitancy.  His youth would not protect him, though, because she knew that, if left alive, he would continue this mode of life.  Countless innocent people would be endangered.  With resolve, Phiona advanced on him and he backed away, frantically searching for a fellow criminal to help him out of his predicament.

Little did she know that one had arrived to save the boy from his untimely yet well-deserved death!  One of the afore-mentioned archers stood behind her, only four ped away, and carefully raised a nocked arrow aimed directly at Phiona's heart!

Looking down from her perch in the tree, Elraralia contemplated whether she really wanted to kill the rabbit, or whether a root would suffice for breakfast instead.  Mid-contemplation, she heard something that made her forget the rabbit altogether.  Was that… the sound of screaming?  Jumping down from the tree, she took off, following closely behind Talyon who had taken off the moment the sound reached the trees they were in.

Dashing through the trees, she began to wonder what on earth would make the people scream the way they were.  The animals in this forest weren’t prone to attacking, that she knew of, and there weren’t any other people in the forest that she had seen, except for Ripp, Aiyana and herself.  But there was that caravan that Ripp mentioned, and it did sound like it was coming from the road…

Running faster, she broke through the brush, and coming upon the group, her suspicions were confirmed: Bandits.  She had had one bad experience with these types of people, in her past; they were the ones who had given her the scar on her face, and since then she had never given them any sympathy.

Looking up, she saw a group of four staring at her, and without any further thought, she grabbed her scourge out of her belt, and rushed in, hitting the first on the skull with a sickening thud and with a look of surprise, he dropped.  The other three, surprise overtaken with the rage of seeing their companion attacked, rushed at her all baring looks of fury that matched her own.  Grabbing her dagger from the belt at her waist, she threw it at the first of the oncoming three, with a deadly accuracy that landed it deep in-between his eyes.  Not stopping to look, she grabbed the man’s sword from his hand, and plunged it deep into his companion’s chest.  Not watching for the last one though, she paid for it with a gash on her back and arm, before she was able to knock him out with the scourge.

Grabbing her dagger, and ignoring the pain that was now coming from her arm and back, she ran forward, looking down for only a moment, when she saw the manner in which many of these bandits had been killed: Ice.  So Ripp and Aiyana were here.

Stopping for a moment, her temper cooled down to a small simmer, and her Kaierian Training stepped in. What really needed to be done was to get rid of the archers, wherever they were coming from.  Killing two more as she looked, she came upon Ripp, who seemed to be taking in the scene.

“Wonderful fight wouldn’t you say?” she asked looking around “Lovely way to start the morning.  I’m guessing you’re the one who left those bandits back there with a melting weapon?”

Severine barely noticed those who entered in the fight, like he barely noticed that Lilas was dead and Ren was about to reach that point as well. All he could think about was killing those who harmed Tierria. His sword was swinging conastantly, but with skill none the less. His enchanted bastard sword slashed the back of a bandit, and when one came up to him from behind, Severine quickly noticed the shadow, and stabbed him in the chest without turning around. The blade of his sword at this point was starting to cover with blood. His hair covered his eyes, causing the bandits to try and attack his blind side. Severine was prepared for that. He quickly threw two knives that struck two bandits in the chest.

Seeing a few arrows whiz by him, Severine ran up to the archers with incredible speed, and before either one could reload they were slain within a few strokes from The Sword of Halo. Turning his head to the left, Severine parried a sword attack, and thrusted his weapon into the man's stomach. Before he could even take the sword out, Severine felt a deep gash in his left arm. Howling with rage, Severine pushed the man with strength he never knew he possessed, and decapitated him without further thought.

Gripping his bastard sword with both hands, Severine's braids was hanging over his eyes...which seem to have a light glow of red to them. Not like a full glow in the dream, but it was a color of red none the less.  There were about eight or nine bandits left, including archers. Lilas was dead, and so was a few caravan workers. Voltaire, Zeadon, and Tierria was nowhere to be found, and Gromelson and Jacques were holding their own. As for Phiona...Phiona was fighting a few peds away...and there was an archer about to shoot...

"Phiona!"

Snapping back to reality, Severine ran towards Phiona, and tackled her just in time to avoid an arrow that was aimed for her heart. The two fell to the ground just as Jacques stabbed the archer from behind.  Severine found himself on top of Phiona, and he stared at her for a moment, saying nothing. He could feel her chest breathing in and out rather qucikly, along with his in unison. His hair was hanging down, nearly touching her face. His mind started to steer away from the battle as it wandered on to other thoughts...

She took another step toward the young bandit, began to raise her sword, when all of a sudden was slammed to the ground by Severine.  The young villain, realizing he had a second chance at life, turned and ran off into the forest as the archer was cut down by a caravan guard.

Phiona was pinned to the ground, not so much by his weight as by Severine's dark, intense gaze.  She was tempted to kiss him then, but the sounds of battle around them distracted her.  Jacques shouted a warning to them before running to the front of the caravan, where the remain guards were holding off the attack.

The two warriors quickly followed suit.

Snapping back to reality and emptying the thoughts of Phiona in his head, Severine ran alongside his companion to take out the rest of the soldiers. He thre two more knives at the last two archers. Feeling better about that, Severine proceeded to fight against a nearby bandit who tried going for a side attack.

"Stay here!" cried Aiyana as the girl began to move back into the clearing.  Quickly, she bounded after the girl.  Aiming an arrow at a fleeing bandit, she released and was rewarded with a scream as the bandit fell, facefirst into the woods.

"The battle is not over..." Aiyana drew a dagger.  "Here."

She lightly tossed the dagger over to the girl, hoping she knew how to use it.

Quickly flicking his gaze toward Elraralia a wide smile on his lips,

"Oh indeed," he replied playing along, "Nothing quite gets ones juices flowing like a good ol' roarin' fight."

Taking in the battle he saw where the caravan guard had rallied to the defense near the front of the wagon train.

"Well I believe I found the caravan I was in search of, I don't think I mentioned it too you.  And by my guess our aid is sorely need in the front."  Ripp said nodding to the guard.

Severine stared at the leftover bandits that were running away. Some ahd already gone, following the captured wagon which Crestus was losing his mind over. Paying no mind to the middle-aged man's cries, Severine sheath his sword.

"We need to follow them" he said. "They had this all planned, with that action probably as a back-up. Capture as many wagons as you can...that's what they figured..."

With a whitsle, Rosebud was right beside its master. Severine quickly jumped on the Aj, and pursued after the thieves. He was the only one that was fast enough to catch up with them. Even a mile away, no horse could outrun an Aj'Nuvic.

"Hurry! I might need someone to back me up!" He called out to the others.

The villains routed, Severine jumped on his mount and chased off after the stolen wagon, long out of sight, calling for back up as he rode away.  She doubted that anyone could keep up with his speedy animal, should they follow him.  And so Phiona turned back to assess the damage the attack had wrought.

She spotted the young healer, torn clothing and all, and called to her, "Tierria!  Come help!"  Phiona ran back over to the fallen guards, flung her sword to the ground and pulled Lilas' corpse away from the red-haired youth.  Ren was still breathing but only shallowly.  Phiona pressed her hands against the largest wound, attempting to staunch the gushing blood.  "Hurry!"

Tierria quickly ran over to the spot where she dropped her things when she fell. Taking her sack, the girl quickly ran over to Ren, and kneeled before him.

"Great Seyella..." she gasped, looking at the large wound. "I never dealt with something this severe...but I'll do my best!"

Quickly going through her sack, The girl heard Ren mutter her name. "Ren...please, don't say anything! Save your energy!" Tierria took out some Odea Moss. She then proceeded to apply some of the moss to the bloody wound. "The blood is going to mix with the moss...forming a paste. The paste will then go all over the body..." Tierria sighed, and then repeated the process. "The liquid that is left will become a powder. I'll save that for future wounds..."

After applying some more moss one more time, Tierria wiped her hands. Realizing that there was some blood on her face from the bandit earlier, she wiped her face. Shen then looked over at Phiona. "Patch up the wound" she said. "He should get some rest too...let his body heal..."

Crestus was heard compalining in the background. "What!?" he cried. "It's best if we keep moving! Severine will get our wagon back, and if we move now, we'll be in Sheren village at midnight!"

Tierria glared at him. "One of your guards is fighting for his life...the other one is dead. Have you no compassion!?"

"Of course I do m'lady...but its better with one casulty, rather then many."

Tierria stared at the selfish business man for a long time. In a way, he was right. If they were to coem back with full force...and some of the supplies in that wagon had to be weapons. That meant they could come back with a stronger arsenal. That is if Severine wouldn't suceed. Severine...his eyes were filled with rage earlier. She could see a faint red glow...a look of madness...he had no problem killing off his enemies without mercy. What made that strange was this had to be the first time Severine had to kill anybody! Things were starting to get weirder and scarier as time passed on...

Severine was now right beside the bandits moving along on his right. One of them on a horse tried to attack him with his sowrd, only being knocked down with a kick. Squatting on Rosebud, Severine moved closer to the wagon driver. A moment later, he jumped onto the wagon, and kicked off the driver, and a few others who were with him. Stopping the wagon a few peds away from the enemy, Severine did a somersault from the wagon, and faced the thieves...hair in front of face. This time, he had his twin daggers out. He wanted to make this as quick as possible.

"Alright all of you..." he began to say to the eight bandits that were left. "I was having a great day...a nice, easy day...but you all had to make it hell! Well...it's time for me to return the favor..." Severine felt his blood boiling as he ran towards them, cutting the throat of one of them without much effort.

Seeing this, the seven that were left began backing away.

"Forget the wagon!" one of them shouted. "Retreat!" His companions listened to that advice, and started to escape.

Giving up on chasing them, Severine sighed to himself, and sat on the dirt road for a moment, to recollect his thoughts. Everything was a blur to him ever since this fight began. He felt like he was being controlled...that something was manipulating his rage. Loyal as it was, Rosebud went beside Severine, and waited for its master's next command. A few minutes of sitting around, Severine looked back, and saw the wagon still there, horses and all. The horses that were free had run off.

"Well...might as well return this to its rightful owner..." Severine walked towards the wagon, and got on it. "Rosebud! Follow me back to the others!" He then manuvered the wagon around, and drove it back to where the rest of his party would be. After fifteen minutes, he saw the rest of the group in the distance. Nearby Tierria and Phiona, he saw three new faces. All three of them were elves. Each of them just had a different hair color. An eagle was perched on a branch nearby, and Ren was on the ground, being patched up by Phiona.

"Severine!" greeted Crestus, smiling as he walked towards the wagon. "You've come back with the wagon!" he approached the Shendar a hand out. "Thank you so much!" Severine only walked past the man, and went over to Ren, whose face was covered in sweat.

"Severine..." Ren managed to speak, but ended up coughing up blood.

"Hey..." said Severine in a soft voice. He took a damp cloth from Tierria, and put it on Ren's forehead. "Looks like you've had a fight soldier. Tierria...he's going to be alright, right?"

"He should recover in due time..." he heard his friend  say.

"Good..."

Jacques walked over, shaking his head. "What a bastard. I never thought he was capable of this..."

"Who?" Severine raised an eyebrow, suspicious of the man's comments.

"Lilas...I never knew he would do that. I mean he used this poor kid as a shield for crying out loud! No honor as a soldier...no honor at all. If you ask me...he deserved to die..."

Severine was confused by the man's comments. He thought Jacques was one of the last people to say something like that...right next to Gromelson, who noded in agreement to Jacques' statement. Ducsil was walking towards the party from a far distance. He was chasing bandits in another direction.

"Kid's not the greatest fighter like us...but he has heart..."

All Severine could do was nod. After smiling at Ren one more time, he stood up to face the elves who stood next to each other.

"I figured that you three helped us. From the bottom of my heart...I thank you all." Severine had put out a hand. "My name is Severine."

"After you lady"

Smiling, and presenting a mock curtsey, she callled over her shoulder as she made her way up the line.

"I do love a gentelmen" and continued walking, stopping only for a moment to step out of the way as one of the guards, or whom she assumed to be a gaurd galloped after the remaining bandits.

Making her way to the front, she ran into whom she assumed to be the caravan leader, and after a quick look around, realized that the bandits being chased by the horse were the only ones left.  All the others were dead.

"So what happened here? Did they just come out of nowhere?" she asked turning back to the caravan leader

"Ye..yes...they just apeared, we were surrounded...I don't know much after that, I couldn't see much..thank you though...for saving my caravan"
he managed to say, before looking back at the good, some of which had spilled out and broken, and gave a sigh of regret.

"I bet you didn't see much....hard to when your cowering in a wagon" Elraralia muttered to herself, and continued looking for any way she could help.  Just then, the rider came back, looking no worse for wear.   But it was a relief to see that the blood lust, that had shown so brightly in his eyes before, was gone.  Too much experiance had shown her what men could do when they were like that.

"I figured that you three helped us. From the bottom of my heart...I thank you all." Severine had put out a hand. "My name is Severine."

Putting her hand in his, Elraralia nodded

"I'm Elraralia...or Elra if that's easier.  This is some mess you guys got into, any idea who did it?"

Phiona watched as Tierria stuffed moss and more moss into Ren's wounds.  She had see this type of healing before when she was still with the royal army.  Nothing disturbed Phiona more than the constant reminder of her past... but she stayed by the healer and bound Ren's wounds anyway.

Crestus was grumbling about the delay the ambushed caused, as if it were their fault.  She ignored him.  She was washing her hands from a canteen when Severine returned.

"Severine..." Ren said weakly, coughing up blood.

"Hey..." said Severine in a soft voice. He took a damp cloth from Tierria, and put it on Ren's forehead. "Looks like you've had a fight soldier. Tierria...he's going to be alright, right?"

Phiona's face darkened at the word "soldier".  Soldier.  this was no army and she thanked the gods for that.  But all the references were too much for her just the same, and she backed away.  Time to gather up her horse.

"He should recover in due time..." She heard Tierria's faded answer as she walked off.

Phiona strode past the three elves, giving them only a minor glance.  They weren't her concern and also, she'd just spotted her mount over by the tree line.  As she led the golden mare back to the caravan, she realized her tunic was covered in blood.   Oh that's just great!  GREAT!  Now I only have one left.   This threw her into an even darker mood.

Moving around the back of the last wagon, she surveyed the scene on the other side.  The remaining guards, those who weren't severely wounded at least, and the wagon drivers were lining up the bodies of the attackers along the side of the road.  Phiona noticed that they were stripping the bodies of anything valuable, tool.  She'd seen this before, as well.  Spoils of war.  She glowered at them, not that they noticed.  Thankfully they left them clothed, since they were mostly bloodsoaked.

When the caravan finally did continue its trek, Phiona took up her place at the rear guard.  She kept closer to the last wagon this time, however.

"Agh, Silffin-be-damned."

Tearing a bit more of his robe off he tied a quick tourniquet above the wound.  Getting up to where Elraralia was standing he heard a Shendar (if memory served him from times in the Rahaz-Dath) praise his and the other two elves of they're aid.

"Don't mention a thing, its always a pleasure to be of aid." he then saw the caravan leader, "Crestus!  Good to see you!  I take it you'll still be needing my services?"

She saw Ripp and Elraralia approach one of the men but could not make out what they were saying.  Her mind was cleared by the battle, and each blade of grass stood out as she loped over to the group, who, by the looks of it, were in the greeting process.

She smiled slightly at them.

"I am Aiyana Xanthe.  Excuse me if I am slightly unsociable, but I need to attend to these," she said softly, gesturing to her injuries.  She promptly sat down on the worn dirt and withdrew a small hide from her pack which she applied to the leg wound.

The arm continued to bleed, red liquid splashing on the road.

Tierria sat in the back of the wagon she was in, holding Ren's head on her lap. She felt so bad for the young warrior, he risked his life to save the merchandise of a lousey scumbag like Crestus. All Tierria cared about right now was making sure that Ren got well, and getting this mission over with. As for Alchemy...she was unsure if her animal companion would return or not.

Don't worry Tierria, she told herself. Alchemy will know to return. She couldn't have traveled far.

Applying the damp cloth once again to his head, Tierria sighed. "Ren...you'll be okay...just hang in there..."

"Tierria" said Ren, whose voice was hardly audible. "Thank you...for everything..." the redhead managed to crack a smile. "You'll a real jewel...that you are..." Ren reached up and touched the woman's face, who held his hand on her cheek affectinately. "Wished things were different between us though..."

Tierria blushed for a moment, unable to say anything. If Tierria didn't concetrate all her love on Severine, she wouldn't have no proiblem being this young man's companion. Even though they just met, he managed to charm his way into he heart...something that very few men could do.

"We'll see..." she said, kissing him on the cheek. "We'll see. Right now, get some rest, and stop coming up with things to make my face red..."

The two of them laughed, and Tierria was beside Ren's side until the young man fell asleep.

Ahead of her, the remnants of the guard climbed aboard the wagons or their horses and with a distant shout the caravan began to crawl forward like a great beast, leaving distruction in it's wake.

Being the rear-guard, Phiona was the last to pass by the lined up bodies, left by the side of the road for their families to claim, the last of which stared sightless up at the sky.  Phiona halted her mount.  Sliding out of the saddle, she regarded the fallen man.  His eyes were the same color as the blue, summer sky.  With a sigh, Phiona brushed her hand across his lids, closing them forever.  She stood again and looked after the lumbering caravan, wondering why these people chose to attack the well-guarded conveyance.  She supposed she would never know.  With a shrug, she turned and jumped into her saddle.

She rode after the caravan, never looking back.

From the bushes, a young man watched through tear-filled eyes as the woman knelt by his dead father.  His burning anger was tempered only slightly by her act of kindness, but still he was furious!  The raid on the caravan wasn't supposed to turn out this way... no, not at all.

Now he'd have to return and tell the rest that the raid had failed...

Severine was twirling one of his knives in his hand, thinking to himself. He was wondering why those bandits attacked the caravan...what was their purpose? These thoughts began puzzling Severine's mind, as he got lost in thought. To him, they didn't seem like actual bandit raiders. Maybe they figured they were the ones taking supplies to the village.

Severine knew they had to be careful. And even with the attack...the young Shendar still didn't trust Crestus...

Turning back to Phiona, Severine sighed. He wanted to talk to her...about what happened..but decided against it. It would ease the tensionn a bit.

Just then, a sound of a horse broke his train of thought. Up ahead, he saw Alchemy galloping towards the group.

"Tierria!" he shouted. "There's something you need to see!"

Tierria heard Severine's call, and looked out of the caravan. There, peds away, she saw Alchemy galloping towards the caravan. "Alchemy!" she cried, and jumped off the wagon, running towards here horse.

Seeing that there was an arrow sticking out of her companion, she gasped a little. "Poor Alchemy..thank Seyella u came back! I'll heal that wound for you right away!"

Tierria began reaching in her pouch for her bottole of healing salve that was blessed by a priestess of Seyella. After applying the salve upon Alchemy, she climbed on top of her steed.

"Good to have you back...i knew u would never leave me..."

"How do you heal a man's heart when you always end up wounding it?"

Severine looked at Tierria. mounting Alchemy with a look of relief on her face. He felt good that she was feeling better, and it made things seem hopeful for the moment...but deep inside Severine knew that feeling couldn't last for long. Looking forward, Severine led the caravan that was behind him, along with his new found companions into the darkness before them...

Baveras...what more 'surprises' are in store for us? In store for me...?
