Title: OOC 6 (Out of Character)
Post by: Phiona Whitefire on November 20, 2004, 02:57:22 AM
For more information about Marcogg, it's people, tribes, history, etc, go to:

www.santharia.com/startup...tscape.htm

and do a search for 'Marcogg'.  There you will find many links and quite a bit of description- too much to post here.

Cheers!

All-righty then....  :thumbup

Let's start this next chapter off with a bang!  Last minute conversations need to be kept short and sweet.  As for the planned split up, I pretty much went by how the discussions were going in-game.

I almost sent Ravenhunt along with Tierria and Elra and Dray with the sewer rats, but then I saw that Ravenhunt told Kyros he could help them go unseen (I suspect with magic) so I switched them: Dray can escort the ladies (I think that Dray could be aristocratic, if he wants, he seems noble enough to me...).  I also wanted to split up Severine's NPCs among the group so he'd have a hand in all the subplots.

This will work out, I think.  :D

As for where to start the posts:  You can do a quick paragraph of how your group entered the city and start off wherever you wish to in Marcogg.  If you find yourself stuck on what to write, just post here in the OOC.

Questions, comments?

Cheers, Phiona

One quick comment:  If Joshua (crutches and all) is going to bring in a 'captured' Severine, then there better be a really good story to how this wounded soldier (an archer, no less) managed to accomplish this feat... a really good story.  Or the Legion commanders might not buy it, you know?  Also, is Severine going to allow Halo to fall into enemy hands?

Another quick comment!  Ack!  I mixed up east and west and thus Phiona's comment about where the location of the Temple of Nehtor was wrong.  Because she grew up in Marcogg, this should not be the case.

She said:  "You know as well as I, Kyros, that the temple you speak of is on the far side of the Mashdai..."

From the city description:  The temple of Nehtor: "It seems to rise like a swan’s breast directly from the foaming water to its east ..."

So, the temple is on the west side of the river, the same side we are already on.  This throws our plans out of whack.  It also means that the last group of heroes do not need to cross the river at all.  Anyone got any suggestions on how to fix this?  Should I edit Phiona's comment?  Sneaking into the city vis the sewer system is still an option, but why would the system let out on the west side of the city (unless it's to keep it from polluting the river)?  I'm stuck.

A little help here would be appreciated.

Phi

PS:  and pardon me for not being more careful...

Luca will most humbly take the blame for the direction mishap is such would work....

She does that...it's even in her CD! "Gets disoriented in open spaces" or something like that.

It's not my birthday until Dec 4th, which is still 7 hours and 40 minutes away...  The date on these boards are off.  At least in my time zone.  ;)

Happy B-day, Phiona. :)

Concerning this... as I never recieved a comment on the suggestion I made in the last thread . . . am I to assume that that idea works? (meeting in the sewers)

Hmm.. you say you need to get to the west side of the city? Through the sewers... well, perhaps there is a secret exit... a cave entrance to the sewers designed as a siege exit (if the city is being attacked, one can leave the city behind the enemy lines on that side to flee). Of course, very few would know of such a tunnel... and it would probably be disguised to prevent discovery by an incoming army.

And sorry for not posting, life has been fabulously busy, but things are beginning to slow down, so I should be on more often.

As for my "group" are we just going to be going in as a band of travelers?

Yes, you may run minor characters.

Just to tell everyone about more on Severine's plan:

remeber the npc soldiers that wanted to join with Severine on his quest? Well I'm going arrange for them to come back into the story. They orignally had changed their minds and styed in Sheren, but left a few days after our party has left to catch up with Severine and crew. They finally catch up with the group, which makes Severine plan of being captured easier: the soldiers pose as legion soldier wannabes and take Severine into the city as their prisoner in order to get a spot into the legion.

how does that sound?

Why not have the mercs come up the road just as we are heading out?

Phi,

Happy (Belated) b-day!

Am I correct in thinking that we're going through the sewers no matter what?  If so, it'll affect exactly what informartion Kyros got from the other Nehtorian (to give us a reason to detour through the sewers).

Sev,
Good idea.  Feel free to shoot down Josh's plan.  I doubt he'd mind.

Any way you want.... so long as it doesn't contradict something that's happening.  Write about your character entering Marcogg.  Or you could be at the ball.

Best that you tie it into your character's own background.

Tythle, welcome!

You wrote: "OOC: If any of this conflicts with the story just let me know and I'll fix it, I tried to really make it work but if it doesn't sorry"

It looked good to me.  Consider that there are other cells down there too.  However, since neither Kyros nor Luca mentioned how close those other cells are, the description you gave should be fine.

Cheers,

RL suddenly reared its ugly head again this week, so I've regrettably been absent from my computer for a while.  Plus the more I write the more the story spirals out of my control into the realm of the absurd.  In any case, my next post hasn't been forthcoming because it introduces another NPC who I wanted to have a suitable CD for before I posted.  Hopefully I'll be able to pull a late night session and get everything worked out.

Name:  The Blessed Elder Julien of Marcogg (Or "Father Julien", the traitorous priest responsible for getting us captured)

Age:  75

Personality:  As one of the Elders of the Nehtorian temple in Marcogg, Julien feels a paternal responsibility for his order and for the city as a whole.  Unlike many followers of Nehtor, he wholeheartedly embraces the power and respect that come with his position, as he believes that he is naturally suited for this role and seeks to use the power that has been given to him for the best.  His concern for the city has led him to become involved in politics on several occasions, and he is more willing than most Nehtorians to use the end as a justification for the means, even if this leads many to denounce him as a hypocrite.
In person, however, with his guard down, Julien can be grating and disagreeable.  Years of being revered as more than human have taken their toll and left him somewhat resentful, particularly toward other priests who shirk their responsibility to the outside world.  He has little patience with mystics and idealists, who he considers to be living in a fantasy world far removed from their real world responsibilities.

History:  Julien has few memories of his life before entering the service of Nehtor.  His parents were traveling entertainers who could not afford to care for such a weak and sickly child, so they left him in the care of the Nehtorian temple.  This left him both extremely grateful to the Nehtorians and painfully aware that he was a burden and a reject.  He devoted himself singlemindedly to training for the priesthood, to the point where the other novices, and even many of his teachers, considered him to be odd and somewhat suspect.  His zeal, wrongly assumed by most to be false, gave him a reputation as a people-pleaser who was using the priesthood to get ahead in life.  When the time came for him to be ordained, there was nobody to congratulate him.  The priest officiating at the ceremony went hurriedly through the motions and then left him alone to ponder his situation.  He was now a Nehtorian, but somehow his brothers had turned against him.  The laity, on the other hand, respected and adored him, all the more because he lacked the decorum and distant reserve that often characterized Nehtorians.  He had no qualms about descending from the temple and traveling to the worst parts of the city, surround of teeming crowds of admirers, to heal the sick and preach to the lost, with no protection other than his reputation.  He soon gained the reputation inside the temple as a dangerous maverick, and even an egomaniacal cultist.  However, due to his extreme popularity and undeniable gift of healing, nobody dared stand in his way, and he continued to rise in the ranks, eventually becoming one of the Elders of the city when a mob of his followers surrounded the temple, demanding that he be elevated to this position.  For his own part, Julien has little respect for the opinion of his colleagues, even going so far as adopting an orphan girl, claiming that she possessed the gift of Nehtor, and announcing his intention to train her for the priesthood.  When anyone would remark on the impropriety of having a female Nehtorian priest, he would chuckle, “Don’t pray too hard for my death, or I just might be succeeded by a woman.”  When the Legion began to take control of Marcogg, they contacted Julien, revealed their true intentions to him, then threatened to drive the Nehtorians out of Marcogg if he failed to cooperate with them.  He agreed, realizing that standing on principle would only lead to disaster.  Since then, he has publicly used his influence to support the Legion while secretly aiding in the escape of those fleeing the Legion’s dark side, trying to be useful enough to them to be kept around yet not so useful as to do more harm than good, and keeping watch for a chance to stab them in the back when the time is right.

Comement:  Not quite polished.  I'll try to do more later.

Name: Melya  (Originally Melissa Anastasia Yindra, Melya is her adoptive father’s pet name for her)

Race/Tribe:  Human/Avennonian

Age:  36

Appearance:  Melya is short and somewhat heavily built, being in good physical condition.  Her face is disfigured with scars from a knife fight, and she prefers to keep it covered with a mask.  She is certainly not physically attractive by any stretch of the imagination.  When in the Nehtorian temple she usually wears a priest’s robe in order to be less conspicuous, and to conceal the fact that she is anything other than just another healer.

Personality:  While the stereotypical Nehtorian is supposed to be caring and empathetic, Melya maintains a clear distance from others and their problems, not letting outside concerns affect her personally.  Though this may make her seem to be uncaring or even amoral, she is actually quite devoted to Nehtor and in all her years of underground activity has not taken a single life, even risking her own to avoid bringing harm to others.  She simply regards Nehtorianism as a matter of following certain principles rather than of feeling empathy for others.  She prefers to be alone with her own thoughts and shuns the company of others whenever possible.  She always feels a need to be in control of a situation.  In fact, uncertainty is the one thing that can provoke a strong emotional reaction from her.  As a result she

Brief overview:  Melya is the youngest of six children boor to a poor woman in the city of Marcogg.  Her father died when she was a few months old and her mother abandoned her at the temple of Nehtor, knowing that she could not support so many children alone.  Melya was quickly identified as possessing the gift of Nehtor and adopted by the Elder Julien, who had himself been rescued in such a manner and who saw her potential and wished to train her for the priesthood.  Though it is not normal for girls to be taken on by the priests as apprentices, the Elder was adamant, knowing that Nehtor had a plan for her.  From this time on rumors were spread by his enemies that the child he had adopted was actually his illegitimate daughter by a prostitute.  Despite his best intentions, it soon became apparent that she was quite adventurous and rebellious, and showed little desire to live the life of obedience and quiet service that was the lot of most servants of Nehtor.  As she became older, she would sneak out of the temple looking for trouble.  After she was arrested for burglary and vandalism on several occasions, her father decided that her energy had to be channeled in a more positive direction.  He told her that she would serve Nehtor as a spy, gathering information on the temple’s enemies and sabotaging any plots against the work of Nehtor.  While he had qualms about using his own daughter for such a dangerous purpose, he also knew that she was probably the only person in the world he could fully trust, given that his “brothers” believed him to be a hypocrite and would stab him in the back at the first opportunity.  For training, he sent her to study with a master thief who the Nehtorians had saved from execution years before.  After several years learning the trade and living as a member of the underworld, she returned to the temple where she lives by day as a contemplative in total isolation from the world, venturing out by night to do the Nehtorians’ dirty work in secret.

Comment:  In the first draft she was a warrior monk, but then I realized that introducing a Nehtorian warrior monk would create all sorts of trouble for the CD moderators when some new player wanted to play one and pointed to this story for support.

I read the story-rules and i loved the part about shaping the characters into the story ( to avoid solo-play)

Right now we're at a crucial part in the story where a lot of stuff is about to unfold. while is is hard to fit in characters...at the sametime is a great way to introduce new plares who have interestign backgrounds. between these damn mid-terms...lol...i'll try to find time to examine new profiles and work with you people as best a si can to give u a great entrance in the story. If it worked ofr Luca...it can work for you

I was just peeking around at the story to possibly join at a later point as it progresses.....

Just so we're on the same page, I'm assuming there are five of Shadowknife's men in the room, two guarding the door, one guarding the priests, and two others watching the exits.  I'm also assuming that Tythee is looking into the room from a door other than the one that Melya just entered by.

Tythle just walked back the way he had first come down into the lower level of the temple so as far as I know Tythle is in a hallway standing at the corner that turns into the cell area, unless I'm wrong then I guess he is standing int he doorway. And I'll be gone from firday to sunday evening so if the story mod wants to keep the story going you can move my chatacter and stuff.

Lovely job at faking your death, but I must ask this: what on earth is going on?

I could attempt to go off on some tagent and do whatever and all that, but I don't wanna mess with the story too much by taking liberities...

IN other words..what is going on at the ball I have been waiting for a post for ages.

The difference between a brave man and a coward....is facing your fear instead of running away

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Kyros, regard the following line, please, from your latest post:

"Kyros hurried away as Luca and Phiona rushed out of the door."

This is a classic example of bunnying not one, but two characters.  Yet even if it were only one, it is not allowed*.  Please edit the post and allow Luca and Phiona to be played by their own Players.

Thanks.

Phi

*Usually not.  GMs are allowed to bunny a PC if it is necessary (ie, Player hasn't posted in a while and the PC's action is holding up the story, to remove an abandoned PC from the game, etc)

Post by: Phiona Whitefire on May 05, 2005, 06:55:22 AM
Dray, go ahead and take liberties.

Most of what has been happening at the ball has happened behind the scenes, so your PC wouldn't be aware of it.  As long as you don't directly interfere with another Player's PC (ie. run that character) then go for it.

Cheers,

Phi

Ok, I'll be more careful in the future.  I was under the impression that Phi and Luca had already made it our of the cell and that I was talking about an event that had already happened.  I was a bit hurried and should have re-read everyone else's posts more carefully.

There, I removed that sentence from the post.  I don't think it bunnies anyone anymore.

Heya Kyros,

In retrospect, I see that you meant out of the cell door.  Since that already happened in both my and Luca's posts, and the masked woman had spoken to me in your post already, I thought that you were saying Phiona and Luca ran out of the larger room (away from the people), not the cell.  That is the way it read to me. And that is why I thought you were bunnying our PCs.

Timing is everything.  I like to recap events in my posts, too, which is why it's extremely important not to reorder events.

Just so we are clear on this, if I ask you (or anyone) to remove anything from your post and I am mistaken- like in this instance- you can clarify your post instead.  So if you want to go back in and write "cell door" you can.

Keep in mind that, as Mod, I have the ability to edit posts, but I choose not to.  I'd rather work it out this way, I think it's a better method.  Besides, it's not my game, really... it is Severine's.  I'm just helping out.

Cheers,

Phi

... and now I see you completely removed the reference to the man rushing Phiona (the one Luca dropped to the floor and Phiona stabbed in the chest).  Hmmmm.

Oh well.  I guess that doesn't muck up my later post too much.

Is there any physical evidence of Rheine having been in the room that she was in? Like blood from a wound or a scrap of cloth.

It's all so sudden...

About the soldier, since I was somewhat confused about what exactly was wrong, I took out all mentions of Phi and Luca and just had Kyros leave the scene immediately, therefore not seeing the soldier chase Phi.  Hopefully everything's ok now as it is.

I would like Luca to go after Rheine...so if Dasson could give a short post of her whereabouts or answer my question *points above* that'd be nifty. If not by tomorrow night, I'll just chug on along :biggrin

There.  Sorry for taking this long.  The next post will be sooner, I promise.

By the way, where is Ravenhunt.  Dead?  Unconscious?  Bound and gagged?  I don't want to "find" him until Sev posts something about his whereabouts.

My sincere apologies for my absence. I had sorta lost track of what was going on after I had my character run off, and really had no idea what to do thereafter that would keep me in the story (doesn't help if I go running off and out of the story, right? :b ), so didn't post, and then sorta stopped checking for a few days. :x

@Luca: No, no physical evidence of her having been in there. She ran off down the opposite hallway that the Legion lady came from (the one Kyros just ran down). So she'd be a bit further down there than Kyros.... Hmm... to find her... perhaps she runs into a guard, and screams, and you hear her?

Yeah, we're waiting on Severine.  I didn't feel comfortable just leaving an important NPC.  Actually, two NPCs counting Travis.

Err, no. What I meant was that I was asking for OOC acceptance of the idea before working on it with a post. I wanted a yes or a no on if it was workable, and then if I got a yes, then I'd make a post on it.

I'll take it as a yes, in any case, so I'll be posting soon.
