Title: Chapter One: Infiltration
Post by: Capher on November 21, 2001, 02:38:22 AM
Terra walks into the room, sets her gear down and leans against the wall. "Good, we are all here." I say. "A little banged up, but at least alive. Now we make some plans, get some shut eye, and head out early in the morning for Strata. Since I do not know Strata as well as I would like. I am asking for suggestions as to how to get into the city, infiltrate the underground and see if we can get what we came for before anyone is the wiser. Any suggestions?"

I look at each of my partners slowly returning their gazes, again assesing each of their abilities. I feel we are missing something or someone. I think about the elf, who seemed to know me, but I did not know him. But there was power in him that I could sense.

"Team, I say. There is an elf downstairs who may or may not want to join our little escapades. But before I invite him up here I need to know what you think? I believe he posses mages powers something we sadly lack. So he could be an asset. But it is up to you."

I sit back awaiting their answers.

"Elves might see and heard things we don't even notice. And if he's capable of magic as well he might be of great help against any danger we might face on our search." I add after giving the idea some thought.

"But are you sure you can trust him? I've seen even more strange things than treacherous elves fighting for the other side." I add my only argument that might stand against it.

"Yes, Koldar I was thinking the same. However as you pointed out. We lack power of mages right now and if he is as powerful as I sense then he could be an asset. However as you say if he is a spy working for the other side, then we could be in danger." I pause a moment. "Well Terra and Talia, females, seem to have sometimes a better judgement of character. Should I invite this elf up here, just for a quick soirte and allow you two to make some intuitive judgements as to whether we allow this elf to join?

I await their replies.

Talia sits on the floor , leaning on Koldars bed , absently playing with her dune mouse which has returned to her.
„I don‘t know  what to do with this elf. I know that we need some magical help. But somehow I don‘t have any feelings -  neither negative nor positive -  towards this man. When I saw you all who are here in this room now I knew somehow that I liked you, though I didn‘t know you at all. But here I feel nothing and that is somehow worse than knowing that I don‘t like him. None of you knows him either.“
After some moments of silently thinking she continues: „ What kind of magic is  he able to use or does he prefer to use? Does he have protective spells or aggressive ones? Is he able to protect us without doing damage to others?  Maybe he brings us rather in troubles  than helping us. I just don‘t know.“ .....“I have to leave the decision up to you. Maybe if I know him a bit better I will change my mind,  in the moment I would prefer we would stay alone, but“ and with these words she gets up „ I won‘t have a problem if you decide to take him along.“

“Elf Half Kin! Just like Human’s Half Kin.” Avour looks about the room not understanding why they wouldn’t allow the elf to join. “Spells?” She pauses. “Kol-dar Friend know not Avour and He Human helped. Got big bumped up to help Avour!” She points at Koldar. “Give her sharp pointy metal thing. Why not let Elf Kin join? Let Halfling Avour join.”

Obviously having difficulties with the human logic Avour frowns, thinking. “Avour simple yes, but not understand not-trust of Elf.” She scratches her head and her frown turns into one of complete confusion.

I listen carefully to my companions words. Talia, speaks with wisdom beyond her years. Terra, seems to be willing to at least give the elf a chance, Koldar also. Avour, innocent in the ways of the world, is having a hard time understanding why we would not trust one of her kind. And I guess I can understand also. Would they trust me if they knew I was a dragon? Dragons are not that popular period!! Even if I am a rare one.

I pace the floor a couple of times thinking things through. Finally I say. "Ok, I am not sure of this elf either, however we do need power of some mage and whether this elf's power is strong in attack or defense I do not know. But I think that at least we should give him a chance. However, let us all keep an eye on him. If he shows any sign whatsoever of being on the dark side we eliminate him without prejudice. Is that clear?"

I look at each one, including Avour hoping she understands.

"Ok I am going downstairs and will invite this elf up here. In the mean time I suggest that you ready yourselves for the trip to Strata in the morning. Sharpen weapons, take inventory of foodstuff, clothing, what ever you think we may need. Make a list so I can purchase anything If we need it. I will be back shortly with our elven guest."

I open the door and walk out and downstairs.

I walk downstairs to see the elf in conversation with another elf, there are also more people in the bar, I try and catch the elfs attention.

With deepest regards,Capher

Almenda see's a man come in, and see him try to get the elf's atention. (The normal elf, not the ice elf.) So he guesses that he's the one who was upstairs. He decided to ask the bartender about the room and songs. " 'Ello my good man. May I inquire as to what type of deals you make with bards. I'm a bard me'self and was wondering if, For a few songs, could get a room." On a side thought, I ask, "And how far is it from here to Strata? And what would be the quickest way there?"

Talia paces through the room, still uneasy with the thought of having an elf in their company. „Aren‘t elves able to read your mind?“ she asks the others. „Aren‘t you afraid that this could happen?? Well, I‘m not sure about Capher either, sometimes when he looks at me I have the impression he sees more then just my face, but somehow this doesn‘t distract me. What about you, Avour, you are half elf, are you able to read our thoughts??“

Avour still rather deep in thought over why the fuss over bringing a ‘full elf’ into their group gets distracted when Talia starts talking about elves once Capher has left the room to invite the other elf along.

“What about you, Avour, you are a half elf, are you able to read out thoughts??” Struggling with what Talia has saidAvour takes a punt at what she meant.

“Avour hear Human Kin talking without moving lips sometimes. Very confusing, sometimes Avour not know who said what. When Avour lived with animals, head talk only way. Never hear Cap-her, he strong head.” Avour tilts her head to one side and looks innocently at Talia. “Avour miss Fluni. <soft deer noise> Animal. Friends. He Stag of pack!” She remembers him leaping through the under growth.

“Gone now, don’t know where.” She looks down at the ground. Moments later she looks up at Koldar. “How is Human Kin’s body? Avour’s blood help?” She walks towards Kolder and looks at his shoulder.

ooc/ go back a few pages in the Character descrips for mine.

This elf is awlfully brash. And a little loose tongued, I think to myself. But at least he is here so I can talk to him.

"I sir, do not know you. So before we begin I would like your name and why you know me and why you want to help? Also I would appreciate if you not use my name so familiar, or loosely. Though my name is known throughout the lands. I am very particular whom I address as friend, for now you are on a trial basis. If you wish, follow me and I will introduce you to my friends. I warn you as powerful as I sense you may be. I am not one to be trifled with. Neither are my friends. So a suggestion, you can take or leave it, be careful with your words. Listen and learn. If you have any suggestions, think about them carefully before saying them. Other than that follow me.

I walk back up the stairs, noticing the bard.

I follow after him, and talk as i walk. "My name is Silfer, Silfer Darkflare, and i actually do not know you. I know only that you are called Capher, and when i departed i got a good description of you. You see, some of my...friends, we can say, know you a bit, so i got a description of you.The next thing, I offered help because you seemed to need it, and the easiest way to get into a chat is by offering help. I am not asking friendship, nor did i await it. Frienship comes by time. And you are right, i really need and will keep my mouth shut."

"He is a careful man, and thats good" I think to myself."And i sense he is certainly not the type to be trifled with.".

"As for why I came in the first place.I seek adventure, and you are adventure. And please, dont take me for a famehunting fool, i am not. I seek treasures, and not only measured in gold. I seek magic artifacts, things long past created and forgotten.I was too long time sitting at one spot, so i desided to go on adventure again.Your name was mentioned by one of my friends, and that i would find you here. So here i am."

I fall silent, waiting for answers.

I smile at Avour. "Yes, thanks. My stubborn bones would've found their way back to normal on their own but I'm feeling much better now. Not like somebody who has been thrown through a wall by an angry Gorba."

Looking at Talia. "Normally Elves can't read minds without force or your help but they sense more than humans and dwarves and that will be helpful. And anything Elves can do, any mage can do as well so I'd like to stay with an Elf who is certainly not as powerhungry and we certainly need someone capable of magic." ..."beside Capher, I mean." I add thinking about this strange man.

I again think about the group of people we're. Lots of secrets and lots of well hidden memories. 'Anyone has secrets as dark as the Netherworlds.' I remind myself.
'That is not the point. The point is for what purpose we suffered. We did for the right cause!' I assure myself.

I lighten up again and ask Avour "Who and what was Fluni?"

“Avour glad that Kol-dar Friend alright now.” She pauses. “Fluni Animal Friend. Avour not know what Human Kin call him. Know that he is Stag. Brown.” Having difficulties trying to explain that Fluni is a male deer who had befriended her while she lived in his forest.

“Went out one day, he not come to Avour. I call and call and call. Nothing, none of his Kin come either. All gone when sun come up.” She looks down at the ground obviously saddened by the memory. “Fluni just gone.” Avour walks towards the door leading against the wall once she is there.

“Animal Friends die, Avour understand. All Fluni Kin gone – makes no sense.” Trying to bring herself out of her sudden gloominess she takes out the diamonds from her back pocket and plays around with them watching them sparkle as she moves her hand around. Slowly this raises her spirits as they always do.

Terra takes no interest in the conversation, turns to her pack , and removes a sharpening stone and a sheathed dagger. She then slides the dagger and sheath firmly behind her belt, removes the dagger from its sheath, and begins to sharpen it idly, more for something to occupy herself, and not that to really needs it.

I listen to Silfer's explanation as we walk up to the room.  his friends? I wonder who his friends are? I look at him suspiciously. I tried to put myself in his position. An adventurous elf, searching for something besides adventure, looking for magical and old artifacts, hearing rumors maybe he even heard of my story that I told so long ago in the bar about Kuriks Anvil from one of his friends. He decides to come and find me. Finds me and offers help. It is logical, I think. On the other hand, it is also a little to convienient. The other side could use this a well concieved plan to plant a spy in our midst. I will just keep an eye on him and see what he really is about?

We arrive at the room, I knock, and enter leading the way closing the door behind us. "Silfer Darkflare, this is Koldar, Terra, Avour, and Taila." I point to each of my friends in turn. "He is an adventerous elf who somehow has heard of me, and is offering his assistance." I say to the others. "After what we tell him he may change his mind. Silfer find a place to sit. We do not have much time for explanations for plans must be made tonight for we head for Strata before dawn. Ok, now that we are all here;Has anyone thought of a way to infiltrate the underground?" I ask looking around.

I watch the Elf closely. 'One we have to take care off, we still don't know what drives him. He knows Capher? Good old boy, what've you told at other places that someone knows you and has looked for you?'

Pushing these thoughts aside I turn my attention to Capher again. I don't know if anyone else was in Strata before but I was so I raise my hand to get everybody's attention.

"The Stratanian underground is the realm of the thieves, the smugglers and the murderers. Breaking in might not be the problem, getting anywhere without help will be. Even the city officials never tried to cleanse it from the shadows of society by force so we should not consider doing that as well.
If we don't find someone to bring us on the right track we will not find anything of value at all or cause trouble. The later would be more likely..."

I think about the situation again and wait for the others to agree or add something and esspecially watch the Elf guy's reaction to what is said.

Talia looks suspiciously at the elf who enters the room after Capher, but well, she thinks, I don‘t know Capher either, I will give him a chance.
Capher then asks for proposals how to infiltrate the stratanian underground. Difficult, she never was there, but there are more things to considerate.Koldar says that he knows Strata, maybe he can make contact with somebody, Silfer, the elf is asking him if he knows somebody.
but there are other things to consider as well, so Talia takes the word:

„I have never been to Strata, so I can‘t help much in this direction, but I have some questions, some things to think about, maybe an idea.

First  a simple question, where will we stay in Strata? Will there be a safe place where I can leave my Ai‘ or is she a sight too uncommon so that she will draw unwanted attention to us? Is it wise to arrive in Strata as a whole group or should we go there divided in two or three groups? How will we contact any person of interest there, who are these persons?

My next proposal is to start to know each other a bit better and to do it with telling us our strengths and weakness in general and in a fight. This way we are better able to defend ourselves if the need arises.

Anything else?

Oh yes, well , hmm,.............. maybe I have an idea to contact some people.“

Somehow she seems to hesitate to go on with talking, but then she carries on:
„Though I always was, well,  a noble lady as far as my memory goes and I can trust it, there was a time when I  - just out of fun - changed my cloths in secret and went out to mix with the common folks and the profession I choose was that of  a fortuneteller. And I tell you“ and now she starts to laugh „I was quite successful! And I learned a lot of what the people I was responsible for were like, I knew their wishes, their needs and their desires. So maybe I will be successful here as well and get some of the information we need. What do you think?“

The Elf walks in with Capher straight past Avour. He didn’t even notice her. Disappointed she puts her hands on her hips and pouts. Avour is getting incredibly sleepy, her eyes ‘hanging out of her head’. It’s been a big day and has done her best not to be grumpy with any one.

They start talking about infiltrating some place. “What is in-ful-rating?” She asks. Sleepily she rubs both here eyes with her fists. “We go there to get more shiny rocks for you?’ Avour half questions, half states. “When Forest Friends want something they wait until Mother and Father gone from nest.” She rubs the bottom of her nose and yawns.

“When Mother and Father gone from nest go in and rocks. If they no leave, make something to get their…” Avour stumbles over the word that she is looking for “Site. Make something so that they have to leave nest.” She suggests and yawns again.

After I introduced Silfer to everyone and ask my question I went to the far wall and seemingly stared out the window. But I was closely paying attention to everything that was being said. I hear Koldar mentioning he may know someone who can lead us into the underground. That is good I think to myself. Silfer seems eager to help and sound intelligent, but I still have my doubts about him. Then Talia started asking questions. Questions that had arisen in my mind, though at the time I did not think were relevant. However as she brings them up they become more and more relevant. Should we go as big group? Should we break up and go in smaller groups? Where do we stay? What about the animals, especially her Ai. Then she mentions she used to go around as a fortune teller. An Idea hit me.

"I don't mean to interrupt, but Talia has given me an idea. If it works. How many here can do carnival tricks? Here is my idea, we go as a troupe of fools, carnival tricksters. That way we can travel as a large group without causing to much of a stir. As far as where we stay we can stay in a tent outside of the city. Or if we find an inn large enough we stay there . I prefer the tents outside of the city for security and we can talk more freely within those confines than if we were in an inn where we could be accidentally overheard. Once we are there Talia goes into her act, Koldar you can try and see if you can contact your contacts. For those of us who can't do carnival tricks, I'm sure that carnivals hire protection, so like Terra, if you don't know how to do carnival tricks or you Silfer then I will rely upon you as our protection. The trick is, is to draw attention to ourselves, but from the right people and to make the others think that we are a group of harmless tricksters out to make people laugh and have a good time and then we move on. I even think I have a place for Avour, in fact besides Talia's fortune tellling Avour would be our main attraction. What do you think? Will it work Koldar? You seem to know the Stratanarian people. Do they look forward to such people and events as I have described? Or would they look at it suspiciously?"

I await their replies, suggestions and comments.

That bard downstairs may even come in handy. He would fill out the deception nicely.

With deepest regards,Capher

I turn my attention to Capher. "If the people in Strata are used to such events, then we could make the whole affair without attracting attention." I fall silent for some seconds, then talk again: " I can use my magic in a show.Lightning can create wonderful lights. With some smoke, it can look quite good, and smoke i can create. So i am for that idea." I fall back to my thoughts about what will come out of this affair,if anything will.

I consider Capher's  suggestion closely and think about the few people I know in Strata... scratching my chin I think about various possibilities. 'Contacts? There are not that many I know!' Finally...
"It won't work." I conclude.
"We would draw too much attention by doing this. A group of tricksters and clowns might not look suspicious but people will remember us. And when we start to ask questions and catch someone's attention we will create a track you can easily follow. Also, the thieves will watch a group of unknown tricksters closely when they enter the city. You can't work in their territories without obeying to their conditions.
And finally, I don't want to find one thief or contact I want to find a certain one. If nothing radically changed I think I know where to find him.
We want to get something from the guild, right? We can only do so when we can talk to someone who has influence in their hierarchy. I think we should enter the city in small groups to catch as little attention as possible. Two or three people each. Talia might enter the city alone and visit some places to gather some information on her own. Avour, Capher and Silfer make the second group and me and Terra the last. This way we should distract anyone's attention and can enter without problems.
I will try to find my contact and we meet somewhere afterwards. Me and Terra are looking the most like mercenaries so noone would wonder when we travel into the harbor district. Or we all meet where I hope to find my contact but I fear that might be too obvious. Dealing with thieves is not easy, you know."

I wait as I've said enough already but I wonder what way it would work.
'Really not easy. When we make the wrong first impression we will not meet any thief at all.'

Talia starts suddenly laughing, her hands try to hide it but with no effect.. Seeing Terras face who nearly was about to  kill Capher, at least with her eyes  - and then Koldar with his well said arguments against the carnival troop:
„Koldar, your arguments are so good and you are certainly right, but I have the impression that the driving force behind it is your fear that you could end as a knife thrower or something like this and that is beneath your dignity . Talia suddenly starts laughing, slowly Avour looks around and notices that Terra isn’t to happy with the current conversation.

“Avour be main attraction Cap-her Friend?” Avour asks wiping her hand over one eye and then folds her arms. “What can Avour do to main attract?”

“Sleep on ideas and talk when wake up. Avour very sleepy. Don’t understand th-e-if , in-flu-trate, how Avour can be main attraction. Talking in words that Avour don’t know not worry Avour much, talking when all sleepy and trying to say yes or no on big questions dumb to do.” Avour looks grumpily at each of them moving only her eyes, almost frowning but not quite. She yawns again and fidgets about.

Terra looks to Talia. "He is right though. I does not matter why. I agree with his plan, it allows us the inisiative, and to make our impression on our own terms. Some say the first impression is the most important, I believe in this situation a bad impression may cost us your lives, and for this reason I would rather have it made on our terms." With a fierce smile I turn to Talia. "I would be a terrible knife thrower because I would hardly miss my targets and I won't play the clown! I sometimes feel like it in real life already!"
As Avour yawns I add pointing at her. "See, she's against it, too!"

Oh, well. I thought it was a good idea. I think to myself. But as I considered the others arguements and disappaprovals I realized that they were right. I hold my peace until the room becomes silent. Then I say. "Ok, no carnivals. We go in as a small groups. First group will be Koldar and Terra mercenaries looking for work. Two leagues behind them will be Talia and Avour, Talia go into your fortune telling routine, use Avour as an attention getter. Silfer and I will be last. Koldar do your best to find this contact. Others just gather as much information as you can about the city. We meet later that evening at the inn Koldar names. You do know of an inn in Strata, Koldar? Name it. Silfer and I will be waiting there with rooms reserved. If you do not know of an inn then we meet back outside of Strata's western wall about a half league and we discuss what we have found or discovered. If there are no more objections then I suggest as Avour is displaying that we get some shut eye. Koldar, Silfer and I will be across the hall. You Ladies stay here for the night. We leave before dawn."

I await Koldar's naming of the inn, if he knows one. Or other objections.

With deepest regards,Capher

Avour hears her name again and her ears prick back. Shaking her head a little, and rubbing her eyes again she catches the last half of what Capher has just said.

Walking to wards the corner opposite her she turns around twice and slowly lowers herself at the same time until she is curled up in a cute ball. Yawning she looks at up at nothing in particular and smiles “Sleep good She Humans. Sleep good He Humans. Sleep good Elf Kin” and promptly falls asleep.

Looking to Terra Talia says: „I‘m afraid we will have to look for ourselves where the baths are, I haven‘t seen any  of the house personal today, but I would like one for myself.“

Then  she goes over to Koldar still smiling: „Sorry Koldar, I didn‘t want to offend you, I just was imagine us all as a carnival troop and found it very funny indeed.“
Turning back to the others, leaning against the wall she answers Capher:
„Oh Capher, I think you misunderstood me, I don‘t have a fortuneteller routine as you put it. I can‘t change this easily, I don‘t have any equipment, I will have to buy it first. Or better someone else should buy me a shirt, a skirt  and a cloak with a hood, then I can buy the other things I need. I think it would look quite suspicious if a woman with a Shendar armour, a sword and a noble Ai‘ buys some old clothes.“
And looking to the fast asleep Avour she asks: „Does anyone know if she is here by foot? Maybe I can take her with me,  think she is the only person Swing might accept on her back if she can talk with the animals as she said.“
Thinking for a while she adds:
„I have to ride into Strata and will be seen with my Ai‘, then I need a good inn with a good place for Swing  and ever a better one and secure one for my sword. And a room next to the back door so that nobody can observe my change.....It is not as easy as it looked in the beginning.“

"Hmm.. the clothes Talia I can get. What size?" I ask her. "Terra and Talia there is a large tub of water in our room. You can use that for your baths, Koldar, Silfer and I will wait here until you are done. As far as Avour riding, I do not know if she came on a horse. Guess we will have to wait until morning to ask her. Silfer how about you come with me and help me track down the clothes Talia needs and along the way I'll fill you in on what is happening and then let you decide whether or not you want to join us."

I await Talia's sizes before I leave the room with Silfer.

"No offense taken, Talia."
As Capher asks Talia about her size my fierce smile turn into a wide, childish grin as I watch Talia.
"Capher, where did you learn such behaviour? Asking a lady about her size. Ts, ts,... Oh Dear! ...But I have to admit..." my smile grows even wider. "...if my education wouldn't prevent it I would be as curious about it."
Amused I blink at Talia as I don't want to push it too far and turn to Terra. "I assume you have a horse, Terra. If yes, I need to 'borrow' one somewhere as I don't have one."
Looking at Avour:"This might be one of the best ideas today. We should go to bed soon. I'll go for a walk in the garden. I haven't been in Strata for years and have to think about all the places I know. I might have an inn in mind already, Capher. But I want to be sure before I tell you the way there and what to expect."
As I leave the room for the garden I stop for a last word for Silfer: "I hope you'll stay with us, friend. Your powers and skills might be of great value on our journey as would be your advise."

I leave the room for the garden. 'Three years ago. Nearly a lifetime, it seems. I hope everything is still the way it was...' As I reach the garden I see the starfilled night 'Too many memories...'

As Avour lays down she almost immediately falls asleep. Remembering when Terra mentions that she would like a was that Avour herself wanted one also. However curled up in this comfortable position the wash bowl is just to far away at the moment.

Fidgeting about a little at the people still talking while she is asleep Avour wriggles about on to her other side so that she is facing the wall and rubs her arms a little trying to warm them up.

While inside was a lot warmer than sleeping outside in the forest, she usually had some type of cloak with her, which she seemed to have forgotten along the way. Only having the belongings with her what she’s either wearing or hiding on her person. No cloaks, no food supplies, no weapons and no horse.

Talia feels the need to laugh again but decides against it, though it is very hard for her, instead she doesn‘t  answer Koldar, but gives him now his fierce smile back. When he has left the room she turns to Capher saying:  „No problem, Capher, you can see for yourself that I‘m tall, so find something not to small and add a belt to my list so that I won‘t loose my skirt. I can look then for myself for additional things I need.“

„Terra, would you like to have your bath first? I have to look after Swing first so it would be convenient for me later?“ she is asking the other woman.
On her way out she sees Avour lying on the ground, curled up like her dune mouse. She moves over to her and looking at her she suddenly thinks of her lost daughter who might have the same age as Avour, though  Avour being an half elf could be older than she looks like. Out of a sudden impulse, Talia picks out of one of her pockets  a special small package , unfolds it and wraps Avour  in one of her most precious belongings, a Shendar desert cape, light and very thin, but warm as a thick blanket if necessary. With a last quick   glance the around the room she leaves for the stables.

I smile at Talia and leave the room. Now where am I going to get clothes for Talia at this time of night. I head outside as quickly as possible and begin scouring the streets. All the shops are closed for the night. Then as I turn the corner I hear the laughter of females. I look up and there on the balcony of an inn were some women enticing some of the men.  A Bordello I notice a rather tall woman standing next to a lighted window. She seems to be Talia's height. I walk up to the bordello and enter. Immediately I am surrounded by women of all shapes, sizes and smells. A big burly man asks me what I want. I smile and tell him. "I saw a rather tall woman upstairs on the balcony to the right of the door. I would like to be with her."  He gives me a stare, and laughs. "You old man. Ok, cost you though, Fatima is one of our most popular girls."  I reach into my cloak and pull out two pebble sized rubies. "Is this enough I ask?"  His eyes bug out of his head as he eagerly takes the gems. "Fatima," he yells "You have a customer."

She slinked down the stairway, talked quietly with the bouncer and then with a crook of her finger motioned me to follow her. I followed. We entered her room. She starts to undress. I walk up behind her and with a quick movement I hit her on the back of her neck. I catch her as she collapses. I search her room, grab the things I came for and going out the window. Fortunately, the others had gone inside. I jump from the balcony and make my way back to the inn. I go to our room and lay them on the bed.

„Oh yes, come with me, then I can introduce you to Swing. Maybe it is a good idea if she knows my companions. She doesn‘t allow any stranger to come near to her, but you never know what might happen and it might be necessary one day that she will allow another person to look after her.“
With these words Talia heads down the stairs and out the main door in the direction of the stables. Swing has patiently waited all day outside the buildings near the well, but as a desert animal the Ai`nuvic hasn‘t suffered in the heat of the day. Seeing Talia she emits sounds of joy and Talia herself is filled with a warm emotion towards her big friend. She caresses Swing behind her ears, removes now the  package which was still on her back. „ Listen Swing“, she whispers to the Ai‘, „ be nice to Terra when I introduce you to her, I‘ll get you some meet afterwards.“

I watch the starfilled sky as I wander through the garden. 'The night is my day...' I remember an old saying.

My thoughts get interrupted when I hear someone following me. I turn around to see Silfer approaching me. I think about his question for a few moments
"Among their rows,...  seldom, I guess, but at their service for sure. I wouldn't worry about them, however, most thieves steal from mages and don't like them. But the fact that good thieves can rob mages should worry you and us. I don't know what we have to expect but when the thing Capher tries to find is as valueable as he says we have to assume the worst.
I fear Capher does not even consider what will happen if we cannot find an agreement with the guild. I have to."
I pause and look up into the sky.
"Beautiful nights here in the South. Most people believe that the darkness brings th evil, to me it brings rest."
I smile about my own nostalgic feelings. Looking at Silfer I smile even more.
"We'll make it but we have to be as tricky as thieves as well. Do you know some spells to confuse foes or distract them? Perhaps we can find some dirty purposes for your skills." I point at the stables.
"Let's go there. I've to look if  I... if Talia is there. Have to give her some tips and directions about Strata."

Terra follows slightly behind as they head for the stables. When they arrived she kept a respectable distance from Talia and her animal, approaching the stable doors. Just before she came before this doors she wistled in two short and one long tone, close to each other. Following the tones a powerful black horse came through the doors, stopping before her with the diciplin of a well trained animal. Terra moved to the animals side, and begun unfastening the saddle, and removed the halter as she spoke evenly to her animal, "I am sorry my friend. I had no intention of neglecting you as I did.". After removing the saddle she took a square leather pouch that hung from the saddle horn, then removed the saddle blanket, folded it, and placed it in the pouch.

Talia sees Terra coming and tending her horse. When she has the impression that she has finished she goes over to her, but not to near and says:
„Terra, may I you and your horse introduce to my Ai‘nuvic Swing ? Swing, this is Terra. Terra is a friend of me. Friend , Swing.“ With these words Talia goes over to Terra and touches her lightly. The Ai‘ seems to take a closer look at Terra, coming one step nearer and trying to inhale her smell. Then he snorts, shaking its head, finally it licks Talias face: „Stop it,“ Talia shouts, „you know I don‘t like it!“  Laughing she wipes her face with her sleeve, Swing turns around and goes in the direction of the well. „Oh well, that was successful, she tells Terra, seems she even likes you, otherwise she wouldn‘t  have shown me her wet affection!  I‘l be back in a minute, I promised her some meat, I will go and look in the kitchen for some!“

Avour wakes up with the feeling that she was falling, spreading her arms and legs out to stop her from the imaginary fall. “Avour No fall NO!” She shouts sleepily trying to focus and get her bearings on where she is.

Realizing that she is still in the tavern room rented by Capher. The air had become a little stuffy so she stands up and walks over to the window and pries it open grunting with the effort that is needed.

“Air fresh good!” She says to herself. Looking about the room she wonders how she can sleep so that she can breathe the fresh air. Avour walks back to where she was sleeping and wraps herself in Talia’s cloak and sits in the window frame facing out.

Leaning against the side of the window frame Avour drifts off to sleep again with half her body sitting out the window.

As we head for the stables me and Silfer continue our talk. I just try to explain: "Do you think they will lead us into their realm if we don't have something that sounds interesting for them? Without something like that our chances will be very small to get out alive, leaving alone finding this stone! We need something to barter."
I pause again to think about the situation and listen to Silfer's explanations of various spells...
"This doesn't sound too bad but I would suggest to keep your fingers from anything destructive as long as possible. Most of the sewers are very old and fragile. They might collapse over our heads... and we don't need to tell anyone too early what powers you have."
We are already near the stables and hear the voices of two people when our conversation ended. 'I hope I'll find a horse in there to borrow. When Terra thinks I'm walking all the way catching the dust from her horse, she is wrong.'
But one problem still worries me. Without it it will not work, with it will not be easy. 'At least a chance... I hope" I muse when I each the door to the stables.

As she asks if I might want to tell some tales I know about this world I look up, first at her then at Silfer. "Sure. Why not? Should we have a seat in the garden?"
Terra still has to care for her horse. It's a noble black one. "I see, Terra. Really a proud battlehorse, you have. It has fire. You can see it in its eyes. You might join us when you're finished. we will not hurry anyway."
Turning back to Talia and Silfer: "Okay my friends. What kind of story do you want to hear? A sad one, a happy one? A true one or one that is told by the elder? Let's see if we can find a suitable place in the garden."

Avour falls asleep and begins to dream.

Fluni and Avour are running side by side in their forest home. Talia dresses in a delicate white dress is sitting in a patch of grass with Koldar sitting next to her, also wearing a delicate white outfit.

Terra is standing on the edge of the tree line watching over the group, while Silfer is fooling about with some small magical spells. Capher is talking with one of the birds laughing back and forth with each other.

Avour stops and listens to what Capher and the bird talk about and giggles also. She looks about the scene and smiles from ear to ear “Avour now have friends. Both kin kind!” She continues to grin.

Suddenly clouds appear in the previously perfectly blue sky. Thunderous clouds which bring lightening. Frightened Avour runs towards Capher, he disappears shortly before she reaches him, so she turns to Terra who is the next closest. She two disappears. Avour runs towards the other members of the group each in order of closeness however they all disappear.

Stoping in the small patch of grass where Talia and Koldar were sitting, she see’s her short young elven mother appear walking next to her doddering old human father. Both of her parents supporting horribly annoyed faces. Avour tries to move but her mother reaches out her hand and used magic to make her daughter stay still.

Once the strange couple are close enough, the cuts and bruises on Avour’s father become visible to her. Avour’s mother pulls at her child’s hand and cuts open the skin and squeezes the skin to pour the blood on her father’s wounds. All the while Avours resistance not being noticed by her mother.

Avour screams and tries to pull away, however nothing happens. Somehow Capher, Talia, and everyone else appears and they watch as her mother continues to cut Avour and squeeze her blood out.

Then out of the blue all Avour’s new friends are surrounding her pulling her mother off and pushing both parents away. Terra proving to be exceptionally useful at doing this.

Fluni reappears and starts prancing about the place again. Confused Avour stands in the middle of the grass patch with droplets of blood all over her body looking dumbfounded at what’s just happened.

When Avour wakes up she finds herself clinging to the frame of the window and feels suddenly left alone. Not wanting to go back to sleep immediately she walks down through the tavern and notices that there are several new faces there. She remembers that the others were saying something about their animals.

“Talia Friend!” She calls out and grabs Talia’s coat and notices that there are tiny dried up blood spots on her arms. “Koldar Friend!” Avour calls out sounding very distressed and lost. “Terra Friend! Silfer Friend!” Avour starts to become quite agitated and gets frightened in the strange place she’s found herself in.

Koldar , Silfer and Talia are heading to the garden: „ Koldar, though I would like to hear a myth or legend I prefer for now a true story, one of the adventures you encountered. It seems that we are together now for quite a while , we will face dangers together and maybe we even have to risk our lives for each other, so I would like to get to know you all a bit better. Have we really met only this morning?“ Grinning to Koldar she touches slightly his arm , adding,“ my stable boy?“
Suddenly her face gets concentrated , she says: „ Something is wrong. Silfer, don‘t you feel anything ?I‘m going back to see after Avour, please wait for me in the garden if you like! “
And she hurries towards the main tavern room, rushing inwards and looking around. There she finds Avour standing in the middle of the room - totally lost. She is calling for her  new friends.
„Avour , I‘m here,“ Talia shouts and moves quickly over to her. „What‘s the matter?“ Talia sees a lost, frightened face full of distress. „ Avour, I‘m here! „ she says again  with a low warm voice. And then she takes the lonely young woman in her arms, holding her tight for quite a while, not bothering about all the people around.

Talia Friend and New Friends appear and then make Mother and Father stay away.” Trying to stop herself from crying Avour continues to tell Talia about her dream.

Avour would stay home and be smart like both kin kind. But Avour Mother bad, so Avour runaway. Now Avour no Mother, no Father and dumb.” Still a little sleepy Avour rubs her eyes and then folds her arms being careful to make sure that her dirty arms don’t touch Talia’s wonderful coat.

Avour tries to calm her self down by breathing deeply. “Avour emotion up happy then down sad. Since meeting new friends. Avour very confused.” She giggles a little and smiles shyly at Talia.

Terra follows the Ai' to the well and retreaves a bucket of water, then promptly returns to her horse, who dinks the water thirstaly. When her horse was finished, she lead him back to the stables and into one of the stall to be his for the night. "I will return before dawn.", she says reasuringly, "I know this for sure.". Terra then leave the stables for the garden where the others have gone.

"A true, real story then. But it should be happy or sorrowful. About destiny or maybe ...hope?" I add responding to Talia's soft touch and her fascinating smile.
Thousand different thoughts, chaotic perceptions and various memories rushing through my mind. Before there's time to identify my and her feelings she suddenly turns serious again and looks at the tavern as if she is listening to someones calls.

I can't even ask what is wrong when she hurries into the tavern. I follow her quickly fearing the worst but also wonder: 'Didn't she mention something about mindreading? Sometimes she seems to sense things beyond common perception.'
In the tavern we find Avour standing in the room totally confused and still shaken by a terrible nightmare. I stand behind Talia when she holds the girl in her arms trying to calm her down.
With hard eyes I flash at anyone in the room who shows only the slightest sign of amusement for the situation till everybody is only caring for his own matters again.
Shocked by the obvious desperation by Avour I try to solace her as well.
"Don't worry, Avour. Seyella can be cruel sometimes. But now we will care for you as good as we can."
Smiling warmly at her "And when you feel dumb... Well, we can change that!"
I reach out with an open hand to invite her. "Come with us now. You don't have to fear anything...", glaring at Talia "I think it is time for a happy story..."

When Talia asked me, i suddently felt it. Avour wasnt asleep anymore, she was awake, and her aura was trembling, like of wind. Fear... I thought. It must be fear. But what could scary her so much?... I began to run after Talia and Koldar, while many things were swirling in my head. I rushed up to the room, finding Talia, Koldar and Avour standing, AVour scared, while Talia and Koldar trying to calm her down.

"Who or what scared her so much?!" i ask in a calm, but worryed tone.

“Avour dream bad. Mother make Avour child bleed to keep Father alive” Avour tried to breath deeply calming herself down. Having the caring faces of her new found friends calming her did wonders.

Rubbing her right eye with her right hand and holding her stomach with her left Avour focused on Talia. “Avour not at with Mother. Sil-fer have healing blood? Elf-Kin magic?”

"And when you feel dumb... Well, we can change that!" Koldar says as he says as he reaches out with an open hand. "Come with us now. You don't have to fear anything. I think it is time for a happy story..."

Avour reaches back for Talia’s hand and walks with Koldar and Talia following their lead. “Where Rock Human?” She pauses thinking of how to say his name again “Cap-her?” She looks with her eyes trying to find him.

Title: Infiltation/ Thirsty Herald/Caphers room
Post by: Ta'lia of the Seven Jewels on December 04, 2001, 02:24:22 AM
Talia takes lovingly Avours hand and they all are heading for the garden as Avour ask for Capher. Talia stops saying:
„Oh yes, if we will have a nice story telling evening we should ask Capher if he wants to join us. Come on Avour, we go to his room and look for him. Why don‘t you two go to the garden meanwhile“ and with a little smile,“ perhaps you ask for some fine elven in the kitchen and some doch nuts, we will follow soon.“

Avour and Talia are going upstairs to Caphers room and knock, but they don‘t get an answer. „Is he so fast asleep?“ she is wondering, looking at Avour. Talia can‘t read minds and has only few magic abilities, but a certain sense when something is wrong. So, after several more knocks she decides to intrude. The room is empty, the bed seems to be used, but there is no Capher anywhere.  On a chair are lying some womans clothes, a dark red skirt, a white shirt , a black shawl with red roses woven in, a dark coloured cape with a hood and some other items. „Look at this, Avour , there are the clothes he wanted to get for me, but where is Capher? Where from did he get those, there is no store around“ Holding the skirt to her waist she starts laughing: „Quite a time that I did wear such things. And big enough to just throw this skirt over my trousers. Hmm, I don‘t have colours for my face, but it is dark, maybe we are doing a little joke with our friends?“

Talia leads Avour to Caphers room. She doesn’t say anything, merely follows Talia’s lead.

The two wait at Capher’s door. There isn’t any answer. Avour is a little worried about the shiny rock man and gives Talia a puzzled look. Eventually Talia opens the door and the two women enter the room.

There is no sign of Capher being in the room, however there are some female clothes lying on the bed. Talia picks up the clothes and measures the clothes up. She says something about them being just big enough to fit over her trousers. Avour looks at the strange out fit filling with curiosity more and more as time ticks by.

“Paints have no leg whole!” She giggles looking at the skirt, reaching out her hand to touch the material she quickly pulls back her hand and smiles at Talia. “Smooth like Deer belly!” She exclaims.

She touches her own trousers, roughly made from leather. Her top simply a longer thinner piece of leather wrapped about her chest. Trying to figure out how someone could wear a set of trousers with no legs she squats and opens the material to see if there are any legs in the skirt.

“No leg wholes Talia Friend!” She giggles again sounding as though the person who made it left out the ‘leg holes’. “Belly soft leather though.” She gently rubs the material against her cheek and grins looking about the room at nothing in particular. Then turns to Talia.

“What you do with a paints but no leg wholes?” Having gone from such a low not to long ago, and slowly waking up Avour now feeling a little refreshed and completely baffled by these paints cracks up into a full belly laugh almost falling on the floor, however defiantly having tears starting to appear in her eyes from laughing so hard. The more she tries to contain the laugh, the more she laughs……

I look at Silfer and shrug my shoulders concluding that I've no idea what is going on.
I go to the bar and take a bowl of doch-nut and a bottle of wine sitting behind the table. I nod at the bottle if Silfer is agreeing in my choice. My lucky hand had discovered a strong Leithe.
Relaxing I take some doch'nuts and happily eat some.
After some bites I offer the bowl to Silfer.
"Should we go to the garden or do you want something from the kitchen?" I ask having some more doch-nuts while we wait for the girls.

Talia is happy to see Avour in a good mood again and joins her laughter.
„Oh Avour, this is a skirt, there is no need for holes for the legs, look, I will put it on for you, but perhaps we go to our room, I have to remove at least my armour and don‘t want one of the men coming in accidentally.. My armour is very light but nevertheless wouldn‘t look very good with a skirt.!“ Talia grabs all the clothes and goes with Avour to their room, thoroughly shutting the door of Caphers again wondering where he might be.
Talia removes her sword from her back, then the armour follows and the dune mouse is freed as well again, Avour  is looking curiously.
„Ok, let‘s see if this skirt fits over my trousers, Avour, normally you wear nothing, I say nothing under a skirt, but for now it will do.“
Talia slips into the skirt and turns around herself, asking Avour: „Now, Avour, any comments? What do you think, should I dress and look if our friends recognise me? I have some black colour for the eyes here, that should do to alter my face a bit. You can go a bit earlier and tell them I will follow soon - or would YOU like to put the clothes on, that‘s an idea?? !!“

Avour follows Talia into their own room and continues to smile with her top row of teeth showing the laughing dying down to a giggle. “ Skirt no need of leg wholes?” Avour scratched her head. “How does Skirt stay up?” She watches as Talia gets dressed in the skirt and marvels at the beauty of Talia.

Ava!” She whispers, her eyes unblinking as she stares at Talia’s sudden and now very dominant feminine beauty.

“…Avour, normally you wear nothing..” A look of confusion comes across Avour’s face when Talia explains that you wear nothing under the skirt, feeling suddenly glad that she has somehow been able to make her own trousers.

“…or would YOU like to put the clothes on, that‘s an idea?? !!” Talia asked. Avour’s eyes immediately find Talia’s. A shy smile showing that her answer would be a yes, she sheepishly looks down and nods a little.

“Avour keep trousers on like Talia Friend!” She quietly announced. Then quite out of the blue Avour looks up at Talia and smiles at her, unlike Avour’s other smiles it is one of total and utter trust that Avour has in the woman in front of her. “Avour wear Skirt and be beautiful.”

"Let's wait for them in the garden. Shouldn't take them long to wake Capher up." I say. Taking the bowl of nuts with me as well as the wine -I fish for another bottle. 'We mustn't forget Terra. That makes six of us- I went out of the tavern. Looking back at Silfer.
"In the meantime I'll have a short story for you. This'll help us to survive the time till the others come back." I smile. "If it is a true one or not you've decide on your own..."

Looking into the starfilled sky and back at Silfer I begin...
"So, once upon a time there were three people in the biggest wine cellar of South Sarvonia. In fact they were stuck. And in fact it wasn't three men sitting in a dark, cool room filled with fine smelling barrels but a Halfling, a dwarf and a human. I can't speak for the two small people but the human was quite angry at this time.
How they got there sitting in a dark room deep under the castle is unimportant. But they didn't want to wait for someone to find them so they investigated the place further. Roaming through the columns of barrels taking a gulp or two from the fabulous collection.
As they had investigated the place they found no exit but one. A small window at the top of one wall with iron grilles before it brought some fresh air to this dark, wet place. I should mention here that they had roamed the place for hours already taking any opportunity to drown their growing desperation in the content of the wooden barrels.
They looked at their only hope to escape for some time and then the human spoke first \"I think I can climb the wall. Dwarf, gimme' your axe and I'll break the lock and we escape.\" The two others first thought about this but then heavily refused this idea. The  dwarf spoke \" I know what you plan, Longlegged. You want my ax' to escape and let me stay here without weapon and without a way out.  Lif' me up, boy and I'll break the lock for both of us!\" Naturally, this idea was not well-accepted by the Halfling. \"Even if the great man gets your fat butt up this wall you won't reach it to break the lock.\" Playing with some lockpicks he adds \"When the big guy lifts you up, smaller rednosed guy, you can raise me to the lock and I can break it. I can throw down a rope then.\" Of course, the two others revealed the plan at once and the human grabbed the halfling by his neck. \"I know you tiny folk. Where do you have this rope? You have to go to town to get one, I assume. This will certainly take long enough to forget about two friends sitting in a dark, black pit...\" The dwarf prepared his axe. \"You wouldn't betray your frien's, would ya'?\" Lowering his axe again as the Halfling was only winding in fear again he spoke to the human \" Now lift me up, boy and we can get out off here!\" But the human was not welcoming any ideas excepts his ones anymore. \"No, give me your axe and we may all escape.\" \"And how do you expect me to climb the wall. You don't have a rope as well and I don't see a reaon to believe you'd do better than the Halfling. \" he added pointing at the Halfling who recovered from the grip of the human. \"Maybe we can break the door with your stubborn head, dwarf!\" the human yelled.\" But that was enough for the dwarf and he tried to chop the human to acceptable size. The human, evading the blow stumbled over the halfling cursing him and his kind and then retreated between two barrels to have a better chance against the angry dwarven axe.
The halfling, in the meantime, thinking practical again tried to calm down the big people. \"Stop that! You'll wake up the guards!\" But the dwarf was not listening pushing the Halfling back onto the floor. \"No time for guards now, child! I've to chop some tree who had done to be too clever. I'll get his mouth shut with my ax'!\" With a loud burst the axe hit a barrel where the human stood only a minute ago. While the dwarf tried to correct his misplaced stroke the Halfling's eyes widened as he heard the noise of heavy boots coming down the stairs.\"They're coming! They'll get us!\" \"NO! I'll get him!\" the dwarf snarled preparing another powerful stroke.
The steps had already reached the door, the official entrance to the cellar and with loud clinging a key entered the old rusty lock.
The Halfling stood still in shock but the last axe blow hit. The man ducked away escaping the stroke for another time but the axe smashed a wooden object crushing it into pieces.
The door was thrown opened, torches revealed and five guards entered the room looking at the mess and the three uninvited visitors. \"Who is disturbing the peace in the King's cellar!\" the first guard yelled but none of the three was listening. All stared at the wooden object now lightened by the guard's torches right next to the small window in a corner: A simple wooden ladder to climb the room-high wine barells broken into pieces..."

I end my small story "What happened to the three thieves I do not know. Perhaps they were thrown into prison or worse... however: Do you think this story is true? Can people be that stupid?"
I smile at Silfer waiting for an answer. We had already reached a nice place to overview the vineyard and the surroundings so I pack the wine and the nuts at the bottom of a tree and wait...

'This was one of the small stories...', I think by myself.

„Oh Avour, my dear, you are beautiful as you are, this skirt surely doesn‘t improve your beauty, but you will look different, then allow me to help you to dress. Here is a top, would you like to put it on as well?Ah there are laces all around the sleeves,  Capher is really a connoisseur!“ Avour  doesn‘t  say no at once, so Talia helps her into the blouse and the skirt. The last is quite long, but Capher has an belt found as Talia requested and with it she fastens the skirt to Avours small waist. „Avour, you have now to be careful not to step onto the hem of this skirt, otherwise you might fall“.  Going a few steps back Talia looks at Avour  and sees a totally different person standing in front of her. The dark red velvet skirt looks fantastic with Avour, the white shirt contrasting. Talia is simply baffled.  „Avour, now you are a young lady, I bet that all men outside will fall immediately in love with you when they get a glimpse of you. Wait, there is that matching shawl“ and Talia decorates the shawl , black with red flowers wovwn in it around Avours shoulder. Critically Talia looks a last time at Avour. „One thing is missing,“ she states and with these words she is going to her belongings, searching for a little while and has finally a red ribbon with golden embroidery in her hands. „This is the last missing thing, would you allow me to put it in your hair, Avour?“
And again not waiting very long for a negative answer Talia tries to comb Avours hair a little with her fingers - a comb would be so handy, but Talia don‘t want to overdo it this first time -  and puts the ribbon into her hair.
Stepping back again she only can‘t admire Avour, what unexpected change. Avour had her own loveliness before, but now it has changed to a different kind of beauty Talia hadn‘t expected.

Finally Talia collects her dune mouse, decides against her armour but takes a woolen blanket out her pack, her cape Avour doesn't need any more finds again its place in her trousers:
„Lets go now in the garden, Avour - I want to see the baffled faces of the others.“

Twirling about in the red velvet skirt feeling silky smooth under the top. At first shying away from Talia as she went to put a ribbon in her hair, however letting Talia put it in her hair smiling.

Skirt make Talia beautiful.” Avour says and then realises that the skirt would make the same difference to her. Somehow Avour’s already huge smile doubles as she looks down at herself. “Avour need water reflect to see Avour in Skirt.” She laughs, her whole body surging with excitement.

Wondering what a hem is Avour comes to the conclusion that the hem is something strange about the skirt that she must look out for while walking. Heading towards the door Avour stumbles over the hem of the skirt and then turns around with a cheeky smile on her face and looks at Talia.

“Avour find hem.” She giggles and scratches her cheek. “Talia Friend, Avour no want to tear Skirt how can Avour walk with Skirt but no trip?” Avour tries to remember how she’s seen other ladies walk with skirts on. Bending down she grabs a handful of the skirt showing her trousers underneath with the back of the skirt pulling against her legs. “Avour grab Skirt and walk like a She Human.” Avour pretends to look like an elegant young lady, while she actually looks like a bizarre looking young lady attempting to look all high and mighty.

She looks at Talia and her normal smile returns. “Show Koldar Friend!” She giggles. “Terra wear Skirt too?” Avour giggles picturing Terra in a dress. Her eyes light up “ Koldar Friend wear Skirt? Avour think that Koldar Friend look good in grass colour!” She says with such enthusiasm it’s almost pulsating from her body.

Talia nearly missteps and falls down the stairs  when she imagines Koldar with a green skirt (maybe he would prefer now to be a knife thrower instead).

„Well“, Talia answers Avour giggling“ I would ask him, perhaps you offer him to try out this skirt first tomorrow, then if he likes it we buy him a green one in Strata!“ and mean as she is sometimes, she adds: „Avour, ask him if he would like a matching ribbon as well! Should look fine with his blond hair!“ Now Talia can‘t stop laughing, she has a very vivid imagination.

Down the stairs she stops: „Avour, please wait a moment ! I have to come to breath first before entering the garden.“ she wipes the tears from her laughing out of her eyes, tries to find a normal look for her face which is quite difficult in the moment and says then to Avour:

„Please, go first, I will follow a few steps behind you!“ With these words she opens the door to the garden, waiting for Avour.

Avour walks through the door with her customary grin on her face. Looking like a child at a candy store Avour grins and sucks on her top lip for a little while and then releases it with a little ‘tuk’ noise.

“Avour wearing Skirt.” She says trying to sound sophisticated. “Even have ribbon in Avour hair.” Avour says with a nod and points at her bow. “Found out what hem is.” She grins “Trip you over does hem” She joyfully whispers bending forward a little her eyes looking about playfully.

Avour turns around and grins at Talia. Then quickly twists her waist back around to the front and then looks at Koldar. “Avour think that Koldar would look good in grass colour Skirt.” Avour announces looking seriously at Koldar wondering what the sudden snickering is about.

Avour turns her waist a little one way and then quickly turns around in a circle making the skirt spread about and then hit her legs. Avour smiled again and looked at Talia. “Avour smart looking Halfing now!”

Or I have a even better idea, why not start a new tradition, Koldar. Then you will become the first Knight of the Green Skirt, not worse than a golden fleece and.....well“ looking into Koldars face Talia thought it might be better not to continue with her proposals and asks for a glass of wine instead.

I return from the beach where I had been having a long conversation with my Master. I walk into the inn and hear laughter coming from the vineyard. I walk into it curiously and I recognize the voices. I stay hidden in the shadows listening. When I hear Avour mention to Koldar that he should wear a skirt. And then Talia mentions about men wearing ones or Koldar starting a new tradition. I begin to wonder if they all had too much to drink? I try and imagine the scene and I have to stop myself from laughing. I put on a straight face and walk into the light. I see Avour wearing the dress and blouse I stole from the bordello. she actually looks good. I think to myself. I clear my throat. "I thought you wanted baths ladies? Instead I see your all here. Avour you never looked so good. But Talia the dress was for you. You would not believe what I had to go through to get that dress and blouse. I think we should all get some rest. I don't know about the rest of you, but I am tired and dawn comes early."
I turn and go back up the stairs. I was about to walk into our room but remembered that the ladies still were probably going to take a bath. So I went into the room where the ladies were and lay down on one of their beds. Soon I am fast asleep.

I finish my little tale and discuss with Silfer. "Most people think that...  perhaps I'll tell you the true story when..." I stop in the same moment I recognize Silfer's distraction...

Avour looks beautiful in the dress although you recognize that she haven't worn any before. My amusement apruptly stops when Avour suggests that I would look great in a skirt. 'What the ...?' I can only stare at Avour, who is waiting with a friendly smile for an answer. 'She can't mean to...How...?'

Then Talia notes that there are tribes with such traditions and if I might want to start a new fashion.

I've only an angry look for her. Then I turn to Avour again. At all she means this serious. I stutter searching for some kind of concept in this situation and recognizable turn red. Looking from one of my so-called friends to the next I try to find a adequate response.

"Well, err.... Avour, thanks.... You look great by the way."  I scratching my head, stroking through my hair in confusion I pause.
"You know, Avour, in most cultures only women wear skirts  if any at all." I glare at Talia. "Nevertheless. If we were in my country I'd know dozens of young men who would kill for this sight, I can assure you."
I bow politely. To get this over this situation fast. I look up and with an inviting gesture turn to Silfer. "I alerady told had a little tale. It was not true and it was not good. Only enough to get over an uneventful waiting time so I think it is now Silfer's turn to tell us about the world!"
I step back and sit down on a stump to listen to Silfer's telling.

'*Phew*. The dangers I meet with these people are different from what I ever met before. I'm closer to an heartattack than an Orc fight!'

Koldar doesn’t look at all happy, and keeps giving Talia nasty looks. Avour is rather confused “Why Talia friend think Skirt on Koldar Friend big laugh and Koldar friend think bad?” She voices her opinion and shrugs her shoulders, Koldar mentions something about places having Cultures her eyes widen as he says the word.

“Avour being lady, and…” She stops when Capher appears. He doesn’t seem to happy that Avour is wearing Talia’s dress either. Mentioning something about the ladies wanting a wash Avour remembers how dirty she feels and with slumped shoulders walks back upstairs to their room, slightly waving goodbye to Talia making sure that no one else saw her wave. Then disappeared inside.

Once upstairs she heads for the gentlemen’s room and eventually gets out of Talia’s new clothes. Has a wash and then walks into her room seeing Capher asleep on the bed. Unsure of weather or not she is allowed to use Talia’s cape again she leaves it be. Taking the chair from the dresser she moves it under the window and kneels on the chair with her arms resting on the window plane looking out side. She soon falls asleep again.

Seeing Koldar a bit shocked by their proposals, Talia nearly regrets for having teased him. She had met him only this morning, perhaps she should be a more carefully with treating other persons? But it was so tempting after Avour had proposed it first. „With a regretful smile she looks at him saying : „Sorry Koldar, shouldn‘t have teased you, thought I would hear a story from you now?“ And turning to Silfer: „But one of yours is welcome as well,  I‘d like to know you all better. This night is too beautiful to go to bed.“

She makes her comfortable with the back leaning on a tree, her woollen blanket wrapped around her. But then she sees that Terra seems not very comfortable, looks like she feels the cold of the night. Talia remembers her useful cape in her pocket and offers it  to Terra with the words:“ You look like you need something as well Terra“, throwing it to her at once. Oh dear , she thinks, was I too rash again?

Terra catches the cape, and hands it back as she walks by Talia. "I do not need this. Capher is right we should get some rest. I will go bathe myself, and then take his advice."

Talia looks at Terra walking away with consternation. Why is this young woman so reserved, somehow she has an aura of desertetness around her as if she is all alone in the world. What has she encountered in her life that she is this way? Talia had her share of loss and grief as well, but time heals a lot and she is able to enjoy the life again. What may have caused this solitary in Terra which seems a permanent companion to her? But there seems no way to help her in the moment.

Talia puts her chin on her knees, arms around her legs. Somehow the fun is out of the situation, the stars seem to have dimmed their light. And it started do funny, indeed.
She turns to both men asking: „Do you still like to tell one of your true stories or should we take Caphers advice? I can‘t really wait till I something, but otherwise.....“
She falls silent waiting for an answer.

"Don't be pushed by your problems.  Be led by your dreams."

I see now that everyone got away and the situation got bad. "Well, i will tell a story, but true or not, i do not know. It goes as a legend in the lands far  from here. And it goes like this:

There were a country, ruled by a terrible dragon. This dragon did as he pleased, living in a tower high so all could see him. In the tower he had treasures of the land, all of them. People of the land lived poorly, and laboured hard to have food and clothing. There went a story by that people, that the old turtle in the swamp had a sword to slay the dragon with. So quite often there was somebody to say: "I will slay that dragon!" They all went to the turtle, and she gave all of them a simple sword of grey steel. Then they went to the dragon, but every time, after the battle was ended, a servant of the dragon cried out from the tower, so everybody could hear:"The knight is slain! Glory to the dragon!"
This went on, until once there was a stranger passing the lands. He heard the peoples cries, and wanted to slay the dragon. He was very young, so the people did not belive that he would make it, when so many brave heroes died already. But he ventured to the old turtle, and also to him she gave a simple blade of grey steel. He ventured up in the tower, and the dragon attacked him. They fought and fought, and finally the dragon was slain. But the dragon spoke to the hero before he died:"There will always be another...." The hero was troubled, but went in to the treasury. There were gold and jewels in piles and heaps. And theen, a voice spoke inside the hero:" take it, its yours, take it and you will have absolute might against this people." He heard the voice, and felt himself changing...He felt greed. His skin got black, and he felt claws growing out of his hands. But then he thought:What shall i do with this gold? I have so i survive, and i like my wandering life. I do not need it! Thus, felt himself again. And for the first time in many centuries, a herald did not cry from the tower. Instead, the hero came out. And the people were free. Then, our hero went to the swamp, to give back the sword. But the old turtle said: "Keep it! It is nothing more than a sword of grey steel. The power is not in the blade, but in him who wields it."

I took a pause, and then said: "What do you think? Could it be true?"

Title: In the garden => Rooms
Post by: Terra Artemos on December 08, 2001, 02:21:22 AM
Terra walks upstairs to the room where she had lift her gear, notesing Capher sleeping on one of the beds, and Avour sleeping, nealing on a chair, facing the window.

Terra moves over to her pack, replacing the dagger and the sharpening stone, and retreave some clean clothing. She then crosses the hall to the room where Capher had indicated the men would be sleeping, and finds a tub of warm water. She slips out of her clothes, laying her katana with in reach of the tub and lowers herself in, almost instantly feeling the burden of road filth lift from her, for the first time in a while be relaxed. It has been a while since she had felt secure with a group, and has time to herself with which to think.

} = Thought

{ = End of though

}So, we are to retreave an object, a jewle from theaves. Easy, with enough time, and the right oppertunity. The group seems able to fight there way out of trouble should we need to. Some have misguided ideas about fighting evil though, it is not something that can be destroyed, or even conquered. It must be balanced, as it is inherant in all living things.{

Terra finishes washing, and gets dressed,  now waring a light blue komono like garment with a buitifully embroitered gold serpentine dragon, on the left chest, with two emboitered red drops, one under each of the dragons claws. She walks back to the other room, her dirty cloths and sword in hand, removes and empty pouch from her pack, places the dirty cloths in it and then replaces it before sliding into an empty bed, her sword within reach, and goes to sleep.

Talia puts her chin on her knees, arms around her legs. Somehow the fun is out of the situation, even  the stars seem to have dimmed their light. And it started do funny, indeed.
She turns to both men asking: „Do you still like to tell one of your true stories or should we take Caphers advice? I can‘t really wait till I something, but otherwise.....“
She falls silent waiting for an answer, but  decides then that she will go to sleep :
„I see you this morning, I will go to sleep now as well. Thanks for the story Silfer, hope to hear one of yours soon, Koldar. Good night.“

Somehow Talia is sad, she doesn‘t really know the reason. She goes upstairs to take a bath as well, but decides against it. It is not the time now making noise with the others sleeping, Koldar and Silfer will probably come as well soon. Avour sits in an what has to be uncomfortable way on a chair and sleeps with the arms on the windowsill. Talia just can see her falling from the chair or having again a bad dream, so she takes her carefully in her arms and wraps her on the floor in her woollen blanket, hoping not to wake her.
She realises, that she doesn‘t want to sleep in the house. These people might all be friends sometime, but now she suddenly needs to be alone, too many thoughts are filling her head now when no distraction  keeps them out.
So she gathers all her other belongings and leaves the house  to look for Swing who is near the well under one of the rare trees. Despite the cold of the night she undresses and washes herself where the water of the well forms a little water path to the garden, looks for some fresh clothes and wraps herself then in her cape. It is not as comfortable as her blanket, but  warm enough. Lying down with her body close to her Ai‘ she is looking quite a while at the stars  till she finally finds sleep.

Title: Going to bed
Post by: Silfer Darkflare on December 10, 2001, 07:20:22 PM
I see that Talia went to bed as well, and realize that i am pretty tired as well. And if we are to start early tomorrow... Then i better go.

"Koldar, i am going to bed now. And i suggest you should as well..." I say, then go towards the inn.

Going upstairs i begin to think of what will come out of this. After entering the room i see Capher snoring nicely. I lay down on the bed and try to get an overview of this.

Here we are: Avour, like a child. I hope she knows how to swing a sword..
Talia, a noble, but not showing it. A good warrior, she seems...
Terra, grim and alone. I wonder what she is hiding if she does...
Capher, the one "hiring us.." He seems strange to me. I can hardly feel his aura, even when he is sleeping right over there... And his aura radiates... ancienty... as if he were very old, much older then a human can be, older then an elf can be... I wonder who or what he is.
Koldar, the one i cant find anything to think about. Knight of the moonlight, eh? Who knows how he really is...

With this i fall to sleep.

Nor good nor evil can exist alone. Only in balance the world is maintained.

Avour's appearance and her involuntary joke about me had confused me so much that I nearly overheard Talia asking for the story I should tell.
But now as everybody is going to bed and me not knowing how to feel at all I keep silent. So Silfer takes over. I can barely follow thinking about other things. At least I listen to the ending.

Talia seems to feel guilty in some way and soon wishes us a good night and leaves.

I say to Silfer "A good story, Silfer. But not a true one. You cannot fight the evil without becoming part of it. Have a nice rest and peaceful dreams. As I said: This night will guard us."
I pause looking around. At the abandoned dochnuts and the wine then back at the house "I still have to think about various things. I'll come later."

When Silfer is gone I go over to the wine and have a seat on the tree stump. For minutes I stare at the bottle thinking about old times. The night envelopes me, the moon shines on me, the stars sparkle, just as it should be, but something is missing .... as always.

I keep looking at the fine wine bottle. 'How easy to forget!' But I don't open it. And while I feel the hard coolness of the glass I start to mumble. "Once, in a kingdom without a king, lived those who guard the night in a tower of..."

I sit there till dawn watching the stars and my own deep thoughts. 'We're a strange group of people- Noble, funny, serious and tortured. Eventually we even become heroes when we finish the task if Capher's story is halfway true. But the price to become a hero is always too high. I hope the thieves of Strata still know me. Otherwise we are dead already or failed. Hope. That's it. And nothing more we need. Just a little... hope.'

If I have slept peacefully and dreamed I can't say but it is close to dawn when I wake up still sitting on the tree stump. I shake the tiredness from my body and get up waiting for the sun to rise.
