Title: Musical Instrument Talk
Post by: Silmarwen Elanessė on July 30, 2008, 12:59:25 PM
Owwww. I just started about 2 months ago. Then I had to go on vacation for about 2 weeks and when I got back my fingers got sore really easily so I feel like I'm back at the beginning...:( But I'm learning my first song so I'm good. :)

And which instrument are you talking about? ;)

The guitar? Or the violin? I'm guessing it's a string instrument.

This is sort of random, but once this guy came to our school to play his sitar.  He told he practiced like 14hrs a day and when we felt his fingers they were actually rock hard.  It was crazy. :P

Sitars are so cool!

But yeah... I hate how your fingers feel when you're struggling through the beginning...

And I bet that is not fun, especially if your skin had callused before.

Keep on practicing, Simarwen, the guitar is a beautiful, versatile instrument.  Sitars are great, too.  My ex-tabla teacher used to practice at least eight hours a day, it just goes with the territory.

Right now I practice on the a*se trombone...I love it but for some reason my gf objects!  :buck:  My aim is to get "Flight of the Bumblebee" down to perfection...

May Heaven forgive those who insist on perpetuating the insanity that is Flight of the Bumblebee. Moving forward, I do play the Irish whistle, a little. Practice roughly once every time I feel like it, for as long as it takes me to get bored.

The Irish whistle you say? Well....I can play the Harmonica if that counts

Hey, of course the harmonica counts!

Try doing a search on YouTube for "Sonny Boy Williamson", (I love 'Nine Below Zero'), or "Hootin the Blues" by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee...

Or Toots Stielemans, he's a pretty talented Harmonica player from Belgium :)

And something not related to harmonicas at all!  But it does have some nice guitar playing and angelic vocals...just too beautiful!

I love this...Somehwere in Time - Acoustic Guitar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hvplzupkyU)   It may sound better on piano  Original Version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeggFbpW3oI) but I love the fact that it can be played on guitar too. Wow, that original version makes me cry....

Thanks for posting those, Silmarwen.  I have to say the guitar version is much nicer.  A warmer, fuller sound.  Hope you're still practicing!
Here's a piece you might want to try and get down...

I've mastered a few more songs. I wish I could get a gig somewhere, or even randomly go out in the streets and start playing/singing. It'd be awesome. I just learned a really pretty Taylor Swift song, "Love Story." I know a variety of other types of songs too. Ever Heard of "Yellow Submarine", "The Promise", and "Daydream Believe"? Those are a couple. There all really fun to play. Oh but one really hard one "Ring of Fire". STINKING HARD!

"Yellow Submarine"?! "Daydream Believer"?! Those are only some of the most awesome oldies songs out there, yes? Ever heard of Simon & Garfunkel, Sil? They have a bunch of awesome songs with guitar... (hinthinthint)

I LOVE SIMON AND GARFUNKEL! I should have looked up some of their songs' guitar chords a long time ago! I wonder if they have anything easy enough...Yes and those are seriously awesome oldies. :D

Good for you, Silmarwen!  You know, there's nothing stopping you from just taking your guitar out onto the street and playing to passersby!  I say go for it!   :)

In New York they do it all the time, especially in the village, so go for it Sil.

Let's see I play the Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, French Horn, Accordian, a little Tenor saxaphone and some piano.  I am teaching myself to play the last two, the others I learned in school, except the Accordian, that I also learned by myself.  Oh, and I also play my voice...in other words I sing.

Oh and I also play the spoons!

I would love to learn how to play the flute, and the guitar, violin and other instruments...including the bagpipes!!

No Way! Bagpipes have always been a major dream for me! I'm Scottish, so I love em.

Drums, it's all about the drums!  Here, have a look at this:

No excuses, Silmarwen!  Though I guess it depends where you live as to the reaction you'd get...

Bagpipes!  Didn't you know that the Irish invented them as a joke and then gave them to the Scottish?  Still, most Scots haven't seen the joke yet!   ;)  (Only messing...honest!)

Oh, no. I know all about the Scottish and Irish. Basically the Scots are a rough version of the Irish, since they came mostly from Ireland, and a little from great Britain. They inherited most of their traits from the Irish, but added their own flare to that culture. :p Sorry, guess I should have given Ireland the right to the bagpipes. I could recite the history of Scotland though, so you'd better watch what you say! You might trigger some reaction!  Awesome clip by the way!

Just wanted to mention a *fabulous* site that has free, online popular sheet music for piano. (There's a lot of great songs on there, and very playable!)

(Hoping this works because I'm very unsure and low-tech with links...)

Gaah, I've pretty much taught myself everything I can, but I want actual lessons now. I'm good, but I could learn more!

I love music, and will play it the rest of my life, but I am done with lessons. My teachers always frustrated me.

Trying to get my left hand to not do the same thing as my right when trying to learn how to play the piano...talk about frustration
