Once you've got a minor NPC to escort you to the dining room, just describe the journey, adding dialogue if you want, and taking note of which other characters have already arrived there.  Oknand is the butler who will be serving you drinks and seeing to your needs in the eagle dining room, and Jorn Ranskjun hasn't arrived yet...

Ok, this is a message to everyone, though it was sparked in particular by Rainier's post.

I made this character with the idea in mind that some confusion about her gender would be funny. Like I told Ylva earlier, there is no way of knowing that she is female and not male. 1) If you see a dwarf running around above ground, you have 99.99 percent chance that it'll be a guy, females usually stay in the caves. 2) SHE HAS A FREAKING BEARD!!! If you see a beard, you do NOT automatically think 'female'. At least, I hope you don't. You also don't think that you will have to determine their gender at some point. If you're any kind of normal, without too strange thoughts, you will automatically assume 'beard = male'. Is it really so hard to let your character be wrong about something? Just because YOU know something about my character does NOT mean that your character knows the same thing. I'm sorry for the rant but this is something that has annoyed me in the past as well. Part of the fun of roleplaying is sticking to what your character can know and finding out in the course of the story other things.

The only characters I'd accept immediate knowledge from is a) someone who knew her from before (like that butler guy), b) another dwarf, who should be able to tell the difference, or c) someone who had a lot of dwarf friends....which is like noone. If you fall under one of these categories, no problem. If you don't... well, give me one good reason why your character would know or assume that she is not male?

That is, in fact what I'm saying. You as a person able to read character descriptions and posts know that my character is a female dwarf. Your character as a person having certain experiences within Santharia (probably not too many of which had anything to do with dwarves) would most likely apply 'human' standards to dwarves as well, which would equal 'having a beard' to 'being male'. Your character might even know intellectually that dwarven females also have beards (though I wouldn't know how they know, since dwarven females tend not to have even less contact with other races than dwarven males), but there's still a big difference between 'knowing' something to be true and actually applying that knowledge to a specific case. Don't worry, at some point Koka will let it slip that she's not, in fact, male (she's not exactly trying to hide her gender) and after that there is no problem at all anymore with thinking of her as a woman - because then your character does have the means of knowing that she is female, ie she said so. But don't you agree that it would be so much funnier to first think 'that's a dwarven man' to then hear she's female and be all surprised, rather than 'oh yeah, I knew that all along. Been there done that', that sort of thing? And honestly, do you really know that many women with full length, down-to-the-tummy, long enough to braid beards? I certainly hope not ;)

So yeah, you (ie, the person *behind* Ylva Rasmussan) can refer to me (ie, the character Koka Bentarm) as being female, BUT the character Ylva Rasmussan would quite likely think of the character Koka Bentarm as being male until such a time as she hears from someone (this can be from Garnut, or from Koka herself, or from Ranskjun who quite probably knows this information as well) that she is female. After that there is no problem anymore.

I hope I'm making a bit of sense here ;)

Hey Koka sorry if I upset you with my post I just did it that way because of my characters age and his profession. He's 131 and has been traveling across Sarvonia his whole life but I will gladly change my post if you like or if you think it is reasonable that I might have this knowlege I could change my post to add something about your bow and how that is a reason as to why I am unsure of your gender.

Yeah, sorry but travelling Sarvonia isn't too good a reason, unless he's actually spent time with dwarves (which is rather unlikely, other than trading they don't have too much contact with other races). Like I said, in 99% of the cases of a traveller meeting a dwarf living above ground it'll be a guy. If you have, in fact, spent enough time with dwarves to know that it's the women who hunt, then go ahead and keep the doubt :)

Due to our discussion, I'd thought I'd add abit to my post refering to it slightly, I like the idea of Ylva thinking Koka as a strange dwarven man who likes to plait his hair....:D

Though Koka, I think that Rainier's character should be able to have doubts, a well-trvelled and experienced elf that he is. Though will have to submit his case of course, can't just say he knows she's a girl. But he isnt assuming that anyway.

I think he said he's taking his finals, he said he's going to flesh out his posts when he has more time, I think that's what he said in a previous post, he'll probably explain more about the limitation of Rainier's knowledge of dwarven gender later when finals finished.....what are finals anyway? Some sort of exam?

So far, Royce has just assumed you are a male, and has paid no particular attention to you.  But, one question, when you speak, will it become apparent then by the sound of your voice?  Or do male/female voices sound the same?

Well I think female voices are higher than men's voices, but lower than human female voices, so you might still not know unless you know what dwarven male voices sound like. And if you've assumed she's male, so much the better and my rant doesn't apply to you.

Ylva: so I saw, and thanks for that :p About Rainier's post, it was just that I wanted to tackle this problem from the beginning, you know. Also, my own elf character is 315 and has been travelling Sarvonia for 115 of those years (which is as long as Rainier is old :P) and she probably wouldn't know either, so unless he's had actual dealings with dwarves, i'm sticking to it. But first he needs to pass his finals! (yeah, they're a kind of exam). So Rainier, go study and good luck! ;)

But you might not see Malavon right away 'cause he's lurking in a corner!  Everybody else, except the butler, is seated at the table, which is round and has what we know as a "Lazy Susan".  There are plenty of different dishes arranged on the table, and the room is lit by a chandellier.  All very nice and posh, but cosy, too.  At least, that's how I picture it... :)

hmmm... I had pictured the brandy at a bar against the wall, and had Royce standing there... He is not yet seated at the table, though if that is where the brandy is, he will be standing there.

As for the seating, I can only work out that Koka and Jenlyn are next to each other and Rainier is opposite them.  Rhia has just sat down and there has to be at least one free space next to her as Oknand has just invited Malavon to sit there.

So yeah, it would be nice if everybody could just post here to clarify exactly who they are sitting next to!  Remember, the table is round!    :)

Hard to state exactly how everyone is seated, since that could possibly limit the overall # of seats and we have more arriving all the time. That would have to be something decided specifically by a mod.

Example: Koka to the left of Jenlyn, then say Royce sits down and states he is one seat away from Jenlyn to her right and one seat away from Rainier's left, who already mentioned he was directly opposite the dwarf. That would limit the table to 10 seats. Only you know how many of us are showing up Yurie and it is only logic the # of seats would equal or exceed that.

all i know is that i'm somewhere near ylva. :)

If you were at the door facing the host's chair, Hylphán would be about two to three seats away from the host's on the viewers left.  From the host's chair facing the door, it would be on the right.

That is assuming the host's chair faces the door...  I think you can visualize it anyway...  :buck:  a couple of seats down from the host...

I'm not sure what kinds of boat have been developed for Santharia; I think it's an area that hasn't really been done in depth.  Anyway, for the sake of the story, the first one is going to be what we know as a 'clipper'.  You know, the three-masted tea-trade ones, like the 'Cutty Sark'.

Oh, as for the speed I mentioned in the last post, 360 sal'culs an hour, it's the closest thing I could think of to put 20 knots into Santharia Speak.  To be honest, I'm not even sure we should be using hours and minutes...but hey, I can't think of any better way of putting it!  If anyone has a better way, maybe you can tell me?

Yurie, my da's a boatbuilder, and he says that the speeed of a boat is so dependent on how it's sailed and what the sea's like, that ithink you've got a fair bit of leeway on the speed. i doubt anyone'll complain if it's not travelling at exactly the right speed - you could have a favourable wind and the boat making excellent time, or flat calm and it taking ages. btw, nice choice of a clipper, theyre pretty. :grin:

Yurie, about speeds at sea ('coz my daddy used to be a sailor) (hohoho, what sayest thou, mullog-lady?):

A simple way to bragg about a fast ship may be to say something like: "She made the journey from Ciosa to Yorick in less than half a moon". No idea whether this particular example is realistic, but you get the idea - like with walking and riding, you would count in 'days it takes you to get from A to B', rather than in standardized line measures.

But then, I wonder if the 'knots' measure may not itself be appropriate for Santharia, or at least for the seafaring Avennorians. Maybe I'm just saying what everyone knows, but on earth, 'knots' was originally a rather low-tech way of measuring speed: sailors threw a piece of wood (the 'chip log') from the stern of their vessel. The chip log was weighted with lead, so it would always float with the same side up, and also have some 'drag' in the water. Attached to the chip log was a thin line (the 'log line'), whose other end was rolled up on a reel. The log line had a number of equally spaced knots. Now, while the ship was moving forward, the chip log would approximately stay in place. The log line would be allowed to pay out for a fixed period of time (about half a minute, measured with a sandglass), and the sailors would count the knots that left the reel, thereby determining the speed.

I haven't found any reference to ship speed in the Compendium. This may be something to suggest to Artimidor, who I think is developing Manthria at the moment. Unless someone more knowledgeable than I knows whether boat speed measurement has already been dealt with someplace?

Fu was right with the timing of the two threads.  Chapter Two is currently happening on the same evening as the party.  So, whilst we're all having some top nosh and getting nicely drunk, Kaska and Fu are stuck in a dark storeroom together!  (Hmm, if the loving ain't gonna happen between Koka and Jarrox... :grin:)

I'll get a reply done with Jorn soon, which will address the animal and arrow issues.  Then I think we should wrap it up and get to bed!

Mallorix hun, I'm confused.  The way I saw things happening went:

Daytime - Men are loading ship.  Shortly after lunch, Kaska slips aboard.  Because the men are still loading, she carries on hiding until Fu gets there.

Evening - Crew are now resting, Captain goes to sleeping quarters.  About nowish Fu is being chased by some men, and gets onto the ship and hides in the storeroom.

Kaska waits until he falls asleep and then creeps up to try and steal his locket.


So I'm not sure which morning Mallorix is entering - if it's the morning they're loading the cargo, then it would have been the morning of this day described above, at which time neither Fu nor Kaska are there!  And we haven't got to next morning yet, when all the others will be arriving ;).

The star-crossed tale of a serpent and a merchant!!   :buck:

Okay, maybe I can sort out the confusion with the time.

The Southern Arrow uses a watch system to regulate who works and when.  Basically, the crew are split into two watches, namely the starboard watch and the larboard, (port), watch.  Each watch lasts for four hours and is measured out by a bell.  When a watch changes the bell rings eight times, in pairs; ding-ding, ding-ding, ding-ding, ding-ding...

So, the watch that had been resting gets to work, and the watch that had been working go to rest.  The bell is then rung once for every half-hour.  Assuming that a new watch begins at midnight, then at 00:30 the bell will ring once.  At 01:00 it will ring twice.  At 01:30 it will ring three times, ding-ding, ding...  After four hours, at 04:00 in the morning, the bell will ring eight times, and the watch will change over.  The bell then resets, 04:30 being marked by one bell.

Phew!

Yeah, it's a bit confusing!  I'm not too sure about a light source, though.  Maybe it could be a dim light from the deck that reveals just enough to make out a human figure slumped against a crate?

I guess there must be some sort of lighting above the hatch so people going down in the dark would be able to see the steps at least?

No problem for Kaska anyway, she grew up completely underground, and is used to moving about with very low lighting, sometimes with none at all.  Hence why she is very in tune with the smells around her.

Aww.. you called Koka a lady.  That kinda ruins the surprise.  Was hoping that each of us would find out individually over the course of the adventure, so that we could all write a suitably comical reply.  After two weeks of adventuring with your little dwarf buddy, only to find out he's a she!  Good times.

I'm sorry about any confusion I may have caused. Mallorix worked the day when he was hired before they assigned him to the 24:00-4:00 watch. He woke up at 23:45, when he reveiwed the events of the previous day in his mind. I guessed it would make sense, as Fu slept from sometime around 23:00-24:00, to the time KaskaChee woke him up. It would be safe to say that it was around 24:00 when she woke Fu, so it would make sense for Mallorix to grab a crate that one of the other men on the 24:00-4:00 work shift brought onto the Silver Arrow, and put it in one of the holds.
Anyway, for Fu, Kaska, and I to get into the adventure, we have to meet.
I'm using 24 hour time because I'm not sure if Caelreth has AM and PM.

About the darkness in the storeroom: I did mention a porthole/window in my first post, through which a bit of moonlight, or light from the quay, may drift. It's clear that an underground dweller such as Kaska will see much better under these conditions than the two humans who are now down there as well.

Mallorix and Kaska: I'll send a PM to you in a minute, with some ideas how we could proceed - because I think we need to bring this eventful night to some sort of conclusion soon, or else we'll still be playing hide-and-seek while the others are already sharing out the pirate's treasure.

Health and saftey, *shrugs*, what's that?  (You haven't seen Doctor Jorek's surgery, yet... ;))

Well, Mal, the early bird catches the worm, but I reckon sleeping outside in the docks you might catch a cold, too!   :P

The plan is that once we've wrapped the party up then we'll just cut to the next morning when everybody arrives at the boat and meets the captain and other NPCs for the first time.  If Mal wants to sleep rough next to the boat then that's okay.  But I don't think Ylva will be able to sleep until 14:00!

As for the familiars, yes, you can take them if you want, but I'd suggest that you don't.  A lot of time will be on board boats, and your destination is a jungle.  Jungles and horses don't get on too well...too many biting bugs and diseases.  But lif you think that Royce would still take them, then that's fine by me.

And yes, Rhia, you can write a finishing post!

Darn it! Ok then, I'll make Ylva get up bright and early for this trip! Will perhaps put in a post about her leaving her inn to go to the ship or something...

So, could everyone describe their journey onto the Southern Arrow?  Basically, if your character stayed at Jorn Ranskjun's place, then a horse and carriage will have taken them to the harbour.  Once at the harbour a row boat, (cutter), will take you over to the Southern Arrow.  Then it's up a boarding ladder and onto the main deck!

I think it would be easier if everyone can make it onto the cutter at the same time.  In my post, the cutter leaves the quay at about 08:00, which is the second hour of Daybreak.  It's probably best if you all gather at the quay first, then when everybody has posted up to that point, get into the cutter together and make it onto the main ship.

Once you're onto the main deck, leave it there and I'll have the captain come and meet you.   :)

(Hmm, it should be interesting to see how a bunch of (hung-over) land-lubbers will feel on the sea!   ;))

To Fionn, a question for future reference: am I right in concluding that you've got no hair on your head at all? Both the Mullog entry and your CD seem to suggest this, but if there was a clear statement to that effect, I have overlooked it.

it is true - sorry i maybe shoulda said that more clearly. Mullogs are entirely hairless,  except for eyebrows and lashes. :P

Actually I thought long ago, that Fionn was actually the better doctor out of the two, while Ylva can boss people around and memorise stuff. Her people skills as a doctor aren't as good as Fionn, and I don't think she's as good a natural healer as Fionn. I read through Fionn's cd when found out that she was a healer too and thought that this should be Ylva's stance.  :grin:

i'm fine with that, why wouldn't i be seeing as you put it so flatteringly!
but fionn would be lacking in complex medicine, and wouldnt be as experienced as Ylva by a long way - she's more used to common ailments such as contagions, bottle wounds, that kinda thing. i think it'd be quite a nice balance. :shocked:

Well Royce is in error as well, since he posted after the fact on his departure also. Unless of course I was puppeted, which I don't seem to see a notice of. Overall I was under the perception that my character responds to the situations presented at the pace of my choosing. Unless player's choice no longer applies.

Other than Royce heading upstairs, it really doesn't say anyone went upstairs, including the Lt.  I think both posts should be fine, no?  If not, I can edit, but they look fine.

My main issue after rereading my post is, the time-line I presented for Koka. Odds are she was back long before I made the notation of her return, since she was spoken too prior to the time I have mentioned. I'll work on fixing that. Fixed ...

It was my idea that Koka, Jenlyn, Royce and Malavon would head onto the deck with Lieutenant Ustaskjan, leaving Ylva and Fionn with the doctor, essentialy forming two groups.  Hylphan and Rhia could then choose which group they wanted to join.  In the meantime, Mallorix would be free to have a roam about the ship, possibly going to check on Fu.  Maybe I should have made my intentions clearer in this OOC thread?  My apologies if I've confused you!

@ Jenlyn - I'm assuming that you've left the story, which is a great shame.  Is there any possibility that you'll be coming back, or is it a permanent withdrawal?

The why is simple. A legit problem with my post was brought up by you. The problem was altered to the point of acceptable by two players other than you Sim., with a notation to wait for Yurie's judgment call. But it went on and on and on to the point of perceivable harassment. If you haven't noticed Sim, I have already given up far more than just a story position for just this same reason. Neither you or I hold anything beyond player status here and when your point was deemed fixed to the point of acceptable to the other players, it then became mute and pointless ... harassment. Unless of course you are somehow the Shadowmod here.

I’m sad to see you go, Jen. I’ll miss the formidable lady in the pink armour.

I do hope that everyone else will stay, including Koka, who I think is great fun to have around.

If I may permit myself a personal comment:
I can enjoy this game even if small inconsistencies between some posts remain. Obviously, say, if at some point Malavon threw Fu into the sea (as he well might!), leaving the wizard helplessly struggling in the waves, and the next minute Captain Fjorwek came along and met Fu on deck to invite him to a jug of Artwine in his cabin -- then something would need to be done. And I assume that we all strive for consistency as much as we can. For me, anyway, the details are a big part of the fun. But even accomplished novelists have small mistakes in their published work.

Nonetheless, I’d like everyone to feel free to alert me to inconsistencies in my posts, or ask a question when something is unclear. If I may, I would like to take the same liberty myself if there’s something in someone’s post that I don’t understand.

PS: Malavon, please feel in no way compelled to throw Fu into the sea. I just meant this to be an example!  :shocked:

Well, with the hope that Jen will reconsider, I think Koka was the only one with any real interaction with Jen yet, so, yeah, the rest of us can just carry on as if she were never here.  Chances are, unfortunately, that she will not be the only one, as stories progress, people disappear, for a myriad of reasoms, but the story must continue.  When possible, characters are written out, but other times, they just fade away.  In this case, stuck on a boat a mere 10 minutes out of port, I think it best to just carry on.

Unless I'm wrong.

Oh, just a note to those surgeons about to remove that poor man's leg.  Before you go to sawing his leg off, most times the doctor would first use a knife that was shaped in a very curved shape, much like a sickle.  Placing the limb inside the arc, they used to quickly cut the flesh away, usually in one slice that would cut to the bone 3/4's of the way around the leg, then with the same cut, now using the outside of the knife, the last bit of flesh was carved through, leaving the bone exposed.  It was very fast, and the saw could then be used on the exposed bone.

Being so much faster, bleeding could be kept a little more under control, and there was less chance of death by shock.  (relatively speaking of course, as it was still a dangerous and gruesome experience)

As we were at dock for a long time, and the patient was considered likely for amputation, acquiring that type of knife would probably be standard practice.

Yep, I was going to go with that procedure, Royce, but then I thought it'd be better to go with something siimpler; a straight cut through both flesh and bone.  I believe that technique was used prior to the 18th century.

Anyway, it's your choice really, Ylva!  If you want to go for the more involved procedure, you could edit your post, asking the doctor to show you how to use the knives that he mentioned.  Or, if you want to just hack on through, let me know and we can get started!

Oh, and don't feel left out, Rhia; you can have a go at the cauterising if you want!   :P

As for the fighters, I want to get you paired up for some sparring.  Empty hands first of all.  I was thinking it should be Malavon vs. Hylphan, and Koka vs. Royce!  Any objections?  If not, I'll be accepting bets soon... ;)

I think that your idea to puppet each other a bit in the fight scene is great!  I always thought fights would take forever if players' could only try one technique at a time, and then have to wait for a reply.  Unless of course both players' are online at the same time!  Maybe Malavon and Hylphan could do something similar?

@ Ylva - I thought your post was very well written; I like your reaction to the crazy sailor!  I'm sure that we can arrange for you to spend some more time with him, if you like!  There is a part of your post that I'd like you to edit, though.  Mallorix is still in the hold, along with Udghrin.  Fu is the only one visible on deck at the moment.  Also, he hasn't been clapped in irons yet; he's just had his hands tied with twine.  I love the way you challenged Udghrin, but you just did it a little prematurely!   ;)

@ Malavon - Same point, really.  Only Fu is on deck, and he hasn't been put in irons yet.  Could you edit that part of your post?   Apart from that, it was a great post, too!  Maybe we can arrange for an armed fight between you and Hylphan?  Using swords with dull blades, perhaps?  I want to get the lieutenant to introduce how to fight with cutlasses at some point, anyway.   ;)

@ Rhia - My intention was to have the captain hear the first-mate's whistle, which would give him reason to go back on deck.  If you want to mention that the whistle blast is heard as Rhia is speaking, then that's fine with me.  If not, then I can mention it in the captain's next post.   :)

Good question, Koka!  I intended that the captain was also uneasy about having the lieutenant and first-mate on board, but had agreed after been pressurised by Jorn.  In an earlier post I had the doctor mention that the captain had got used to having women on board.  But, superstitious beliefs can be hard to bury completely, and as this voyage is going to encounter some unfortunate events, it stands a good chance that all the females on board will start to fall out of favour...so maybe it's best you don't shave that beard off any time soon!   ;)

Anyway, the lieutenant and first-mate are more like men than women!   :grin:

despite my jokes a few days ago (about returning from an absence and finding my character shackled), of course I don't mind if the captain decides to put Fu in irons, or otherwise punish him severely, if that's good for the story. I tried to post so that both mercy and the opposite are plausible lines of action.

As for how things are to continue, I guess you could post your character's response to the little drama that has just unfolded.  You can try to ask the captain to show some mercy, if it's in character, but he won't show any!  Not yet, anyway.  Fu and Mallorix need some time to suffer!  Also, maybe Kaska can try to rescue them?

I plan on having a new chapter start soon, too.  It should bring a new dimension to the story... ;)

Also, a little personal announcement: I'll be away from 15-25 April (first a bit of work, then a bit of holiday). Until then, I'll be writing a rather lengthy and demanding job application, and after my return I may have to prepare for the job interview (if I'm lucky). And as other non-Santharian duties give no indication of releasing their grip on me, my posts may be shorter and my responses less speedy than hitherto until the end of May or so.

But I have every intention of sticking around and having delirious conversations with my fellow sufferer Mallorix and anyone who is merciful enough to talk to the captives!  :)

@ Ylva and Fionn - I'm sure that people drown in all kinds of situations, not just the sea. I even heard of people drowning in puddles!  So, there's no reason why your characters shouldn't have any experience of dealing with it.  Feel free to puppet the captain and the half-drowned sailor into the lifeboat, and set to work on them as you see fit!  Remember, the sailor has been under water and is currently unconscious.  Maybe you need to pucker up for the kiss of life!

Sorry, late post, got back from camping, btw Fionn, did you know that Fionn is also the name of a part of the Cairngorms mountain range in Scotland? Fionn Bheinn. : :grin:

 Anyway heres the post, I'm not sure how ppl would tackle drowning back then since CPR hadn't really been invented and anyway, it can't be done in a boat, need proper more steady ground than the little boat could provide.

I think the drowned man was only underwater for abit till the Captain got to him? Is that right? I have had him get concussion, perhaps Fionn or Doctor Jorek could bring him back, not sure how.  :undecided: I wasn't brave enough to puppet the Captain, Yurie has made him so alive.

sounds about right, Ylva, i think Fionn could help with concussion, the other thing would be to keep him warm, though that's kinda obvious i guess.
as for the name, Fionn is the name of a very important scottish/ irish hero - Fionn Machul /Finn MacCool- heard of him? that's where i got the name from, and i've a vague idea that that's where the mountain got it too.

Good to see that you're back, Fu.  Hope that you had a good time in Wales.  Which part did you go to?  When I was a kid, every sumer vacation was spent in Wales!

As for your grand escape plan, I think Mallorix has a pretty good idea.  If you can get the others to feel sorry for you, then they might be inclined to have a word with the captain later.  Still, if you've got something else in mind, I'd love to see you try it...and then take great delight in crushing it!   :evil:

@Fionn and Ylva - I think mouth to mouth resuscitation would be the best bet, and of course the man needs to be kept warm.  Do either of you want to have a go at it?  If not, then I'll have the doctor take over.   :)

Thanks, Yurie. Like Ylva, we went camping! The lady of my heart and myself hiked along the Pembrokeshire coast (from Fishguard to St. David's, if you know that neck of the woods), and also visited the bird reserve on Ramsey Island. It was all very beautiful. We were watched by many curious seals, and saw a megalithic grave, minotaur beetles, and gannets (my favourite birds).

We also heard a story about a lonesome lighthouse keeper who lost his sanity. I'm intending to put this story into a cement mixer, add a ghost and a certain Santharian mollusc, give it all a good stir and submit the result to the Development Board.  :D

Yes, I know that neck of the woods.  I walked along the Pembrokshire Coast one Easter, and I could hear the sea in my dreams for about a week afterwards!  Forget the gannetts, though, puffins are my favourite!

Anyway, in a strange twist of convention, our resident damsel has to do the rescuing!  But what happened to Kaska?  Does anybody know?

I've never been to Scotland, because everytime I look at a map it seems far away and cold!  Wales is so much closer, and for a lazy man like myself, that's always a good thing.  Still, it's  probably a good thing for the Scottish, too; one less Englishman in their country!   :P

EDIT:  And posted!  The ship is sailing again, and the doctor has gone back to the sick bay with the unfortunate sailor.  Ylva and Fionn can assume that they're back in the sick bay, too.  Meanwhile, the captain has gone to his cabin to get changed out of his wet clothes.  But still no archery contest or practice sword fight...hint, hint, nudge, nudge!    :grin:

@ Rhia - If you want to use your imagination to explore the ship, then carry on!  If you want to create some minor NPCs on your exploration, then that's fine, too.  I'm sure that there's lots of activity going on that would be of interest to your character, though I'm not so sure that she'd be able to find a quiet corner to rest in!

After the evening meal???  Rhia, you must be joking! I think Tantalos got away lightly, because the Gods of the Olymp didn't send him Rhia as a never-to-be-fulfilled promise of rescue and relief!  :cry:

@ Fu - I don't mind you using the first-mate and a sailor in your post, but I'd have to ask that nobody is drunk!  I envision the ship's crew as being pretty well-disciplined, and not likely to get drunk whilst on duty.  Having said that, you could make him drunk if you really want to, but in that case he'l inevitably get a severe punishment from the captain.  So feel free to puppet them and give us some entertainment!   :grin:

@ Malavon - As Simonne said, you are just about to spar with Hylphan using blunted cutlasses.  Maybe you can PM him to work out how that fight will turn out?  I reckon you could both give us a good show!   :)

Okay, Koka, you only lost your aim!  Hopefully it'll keep Ylva and Fionn busy!  If anybody is wondering what 'Scumble Glass' means, it's just from some rhyming slang that I posted on the development board.  It doesn't take much imagination, but 'Scumble Glass' means 'ass'!  Or, if you go with a Cockney accent, then 'Glass' would rhyme with 'arse'.   :buck:

Anyway, I'll post with the captain later so that Rhia has got something to respond to.  I believe Fu should be back soon, too, which means we'll be able to go and accost him and Mallorix about flying pipes!   :)

I'll be gone from June 13th until September 15th for a graduation backpackin' trip through Europe. Glad that you like Scumble Glass!  It's got a nice sound to it, I think.  I just adapted 'Bottle and Glass' to a Santharian context, to avoid directly using 'arse'!  Personally, I prefer 'Aris', but since Aristotle doesn't exist in Santharia, 'Scumble Glass' will have to do!   :P

I wondered: Could we give the characters who are currently in separate groups (fighters - doctors - prisoners) the chance to interact a bit more? Many players seem to have very little time to post at the moment; it might be fun to open up more possibility for interaction among those who do  have time? Fu, certainly, would relish the chance to talk to the colourful bunch of characters assembled on the ship.

This is just a suggestion, of course. Yurie might have other plans?

The desktop computer I use has decided to make life difficult for me and is un-usable. Most likely I won't be able to get on for a while, two weeks max, minimum a few days. I, unfortunately, don't have time to write a post tonight- my apologies! Go ahead and puppet Rhia as you see fit. Yurie, I think you know Rhia well enough to have a general idea of what she would do- just remember: vain, dramatic, social, flirtatious! ;) Once again, my apologies, and hopefully the computer problem will be solved soon.

Nice post, Royce, but I have a question... how do you know that it's Koka behind you? She doesn't make a sound, all she does is fall down on one knee, then grab hold of Fionn's hand and whisper something to her. I think she's kind of too far away for you to register the sound of her knee falling on the deck as anything other than normal ship sounds (even the lieutenant, unless she moved closer to the group)... Don't you think so?

Was my recovery too quick to be believable, or was it ok? I don't have too much experience with panic attacks, so I really don't know how quick you recover from them...

I'd say it was believable enough, but I'm no expert, either!  Not sure how your character will respond to the wolves, though...

Okay, we should all be posting in Chapter Three, now.  I've tried to tie some loose ends together, getting Rajard and Jarrox onboard.  The time has moved on as well; it's now 12:00.  Which means that it's lunch time!  The plan is to have everybody assemble in the captain's quarters for something to eat and a general chat about what's been happening and where things are going.  It should be a good opportunity to get Fu involved with the adventure.   :)

So, if there are any other loose ends that need to be sorted out, *looks in Hylphan's general direction *, then better get them tied up soon!   ;)

Okay, so it's time to eat and have a chat about the morning's various dramas.  I've left it open for you to sit next to whoever you want to.  The dining table is rectangular, with the captain's place at the end opposite the door.  Seafood and fruit is on offer, and the drink is Stingo!

My idea is that Mallorix will be able to join us as a servant, and then we can figure out a way to get him involved with the quest.  We'll also need to get Fu involved, too.  Hmm, it's probably a good thing that Malavon is still on deck!   :P

Jarrox will be at the table, too, but he won't be saying much!  Still, you can mention him in your posts.  The doctor is currently in the sick bay looking after Rajard, and the lieutenant is still on the upper deck with Hylphan and Malavon.

I asked my girlfriend about panic attacks. She's a clinical psychologist and has accompanied quite a few. In general, Koka's recovery was maybe a bit quicker than you'd expect for an earthling. But even earthlings may recover sufficiently well to be able to talk after maybe 10 minutes, if they've got a good helper. Typically, people with panic attacks hyperventilate; so lack of air, such as Koka experienced, wouldn't normally be a problem, rather the opposite: even though the panicking person may think they lack air, the real danger is that hyperventilation reduces carbon dioxide levels in the blood, which can ultimately affect the nervous system and lead to fainting.

Even if the panicky thoughts and the hyperventilation subside, however, the physical arousal associated with the anxiety (fast beating heart, ...) will typically only reduce gradually and take far longer to completely disappear - maybe an hour. So even a relatively short panic attack can have a long after-effect.

I also asked my girlfriend whether that was the same for a Mitharim Dwarf's panic attack. She said she didn't know, and advised me that I should occasionally try to make an ounce of sense.

Great, thanks for the explanation! I'll keep the fast heart beating and stuff in mind in my next post. And I didn't actually say how much time elapsed between her panic attack and her recovery, but I imagine it was more than ten minutes...

Also, what I described for Koka (her not being able to breathe) was actually meant to be hyperventilating. I've experienced hyperventilation (though not in a very severe form, luckily) and it really does feel as though you're not getting air into your lungs, even though you do. It was the same with her feeling like she was 'falling upwards' (which partly had to do with the lack of oxygen). And as I described it from her point of view, it was kinda hard to actually call it 'hyperventilating' or making clear that this is what she was doing ;)

Oh yes, I recognized the hyperventilation in your first "panic post"; you described it very well, I thought.

It was just a formulation in the second "recovery post" that may have confused me ("her lungs were still hurting from lack of air"). I took that too literally, I suppose. Re-reading the post, I realize that it might just be Koka's view of things.

I'm giving an advance notice of a lengthy absence: I shall disappear at some time during the second half of August, and won't reappear before mid- or end of September. I'll be on travels for the three weeks from 30 August - 18 September, but will have periods of intense work just before and after, so that my absence from Santharia may be 4-5 weeks altogether. *sniff*

I'll let you all know before I vanish, of course. I just thought I'd give forewarning; e.g., Yurie may have an idea how to park Fu during that time ...

Okay, sorry for not having posted for a while, but I've been horribly busy packing stuff and cleaning out my ex-apartment!

Anyway, I'll be in the Philippines for the next couple of weeks, so probably won't be able to post much.  Having said that, I'll try to knock something up to keep things moving.

Hi everyone - I know I've not posted in ages, i'm sorry, I have still been paying attention, though, and what's been written is great.

Basically, I'm popping up to let you know that I'm starting uni in a couple of weeks, and that will quite likely eat up a lot of my time for a while, so I might not be able to post or keep up with stuff for that time. That said, i might find I've plenty of time, so who knows - i've not done this before. :undecided:

Sorry I didn't post as soon as I said I would, but I've been suffering with some kind of throat infection for the past few days.  Anyway, touch wood, I'm better now.

My last post was a little bit longer than usual, so it should give everybody something to work off.  I don't mind who volunteers to go down into the creepy lower decks first.  I'm sure all of the characters could think of a reason why it should, (or shouldn't), be them!

Okay, I've just posted and revealed what the hidden chamber contains!   :D

Basically, this is a nice opportunity for you to have your character react to a life threatening, real combat scenario.  Have fun with it!  The assailants are weak from hunger and disease, but they have the strength and intensity that comes from pure insanity!

Feel free to kill them off, but in an exciting, swash-buckling way!  It's up to you if you want your character to sustain any injuries.  And remember, long weapons will be a nightmare to use in the confined space of a ship's hold.  Cutlasses and daggers would be much more suitable...

As for the non-fighters amongst us, it'll be interesting to see how you react.  Will you turn and do the 100 metre dash?  Bump into a crate and knock yourself to the floor?  Freeze like a rabbit in headlights?  Wet your pants, (like I probably would!   :P)  Or something else?  I look forwards to seeing what happens!

I was also thinking, since our drama-queen has returned, that we could have a classic rescue scene.  You know, Rhia gets cornered by a crazed loon, screams, and is then promptly saved by one of the group.  Maybe Fu could be our unlikely hero!

Anyway, have a think about what you want to have happen.  If you want to work something out by PM with another player, that's great, too.

Oh, and I'm just about to PM Royce with something as well...something that'll lead up to our grand finale onboard the Laughing Lady!   :evil:

Man I probably already said this once , but I must say congrats to our mod , and my fellow story writers , I hope I could at least accompany you all or making a more or less decent post in this  fight .

Malavon- tis a wonderful post, I think all the characters serve different roles, they all make it worthwhile. I rather like the random collection of people, it adds different sides, and it works.

Fionn- I suffered from that for a while, all I can suggest is to scroll down manually with down button, then holding down shift to slowly and akwardly highlight what you want to highlight, then clicking bold, or colour or whatever you want to use. It's a long horrible procedure and every time you want to highlight something else, you have to start all over again at top....

Alternatively, you could copy the whole text in a word document, manually add all the tags you need, and then copy it back to the window :p

I've taken the liberty to include you in a less-than-perfect protective bubble Fu has created around himself. I hope that's okay! I'm rather curious to see what Malavon will do. If you don't like it, feel free to tell me off, and I'll change the post.

The spell concerned is this one (http://www.santharia.com/magic/wind_spells/3_insubstantial_shield.htm) - the entry contains a good illustration, in case my description is not clear enough. Feel free to decide whether any attackers make it through the wind or not.

If Malavon disturbs Fu (e.g. by shoving him), Fu's concentration will falter and the wind-wall will disappear immediately. Talking to Fu alone, however, will not necessarily break the spell. So when you're writing your post, feel free to describe that the wind continues or stops, depending on what you do.

(We're going to make our own exit with the help of a certain wind wizard!)   ;)

That's a nice post in general. However, I think the last paragraph is against roleplaying rules, because you're puppeting without permission. Please change your post, and don't have Mallorix carry Fu away. I grant that Mallorix has the strength and that Fu is in dire need of rescuing, but I would like Fu to remain where he is (that is, in trouble!), at least for now. There might be a chance to carry him around later ...

Also, I believe that Yurie didn't intend the fire to be so easily extinguishable, nor the hatch so easily reachable. He had other plans for the escape (as he announced here (http://www.santharia.com/adv/index.php?topic=6225.msg272347#msg272347)).

My recommendation would be to change the last two paragraphs of your post - but I guess it's Yurie's call, really.

I just thought I would mention, that I was trying to be subtle in my description, but Royce was stabbed below deck.  That wopse sting was a dagger, and the blood someone dripped on him was his own.  The wound is just above his kidney on the left side.  My apologies for not being clear.  It is not the smoke that knocked him unconscious, though you may think that until you notice the blood and thus the wound.  No need to change any posts yet. :)

My idea is that once Royce and Koka have come round, then we can all go and chill out in the captain's quarters.  It's there that we can discuss what has just happened, maybe bandy about some opinions of what befell the Laughing Lady, and of course, discuss Mallorix and Fu's usefulness on the mission!   :grin:  I guess Malavon will want a word with Fu, too.   :shocked:

I am sad to announce a forthcoming long absence.

As some of you know, I am currently writing a PhD thesis. I have devoted considerable chunks of the last three and a half years of my life to it. Now the date of submission is drawing close. For the next two months or so, almost all of my time from morning to night will be occupied by my frantic endeavours to keep the deadline.

Roleplaying is too engrossing, too interesting, too exciting. Once it starts dancing with my imagination, it suffers no rivals. That’s very pleasant to experience, but it’s not conducive to finishing a PhD thesis. Therefore, I will not be able to play from the end of February until mid-April at least.

It's a shame I have to take a break now, as Fu's relationship to the rest of the gang is about to change. Such a crucial moment for him! But it can't be helped.  Fortunately, Yurie has agreed to be Fu’s puppeteer in my absence. Thank you, Yurie.

I shall miss you all, and I already look forward to my return, when I will enjoy reading about the fate of everyone on the Southern Arrow.

it's a very complex story, involving the custom in our house of hoarding all the tubes from inside toilet rolls in the bathroom, the uni-house inspectors saying this is a fire hazard, and the tubes therefore needing to be hidden in my bedroom when they come round. we were making a pyramid. now we're planning world domination with our private army of cardboard warriors.

Shouldn't be on the Southern Arrow much longer.  After we've decided on the Fu issue, then I think we'll move time along and get to Queen's Harbour.  It'll be a good opportunity to open the story for new players, and for some new NPCs to get introduced!   :)

I've puppetted your character a little, Fu.  If you want to have him wake up as he's being dragged along, then by all means do so, and object to such undignified treatment as much as you like!  Feel free to puppet Handan, as well.  Then would you mind making your way to the captain's cabin?

Or maybe not Queen's Harbour!  I've been thinking about it, and don't want us to get bogged down in a tavern somewhere.  So, even though it misses a bit out of the story, I'm going to start the next chapter with all of us onboard Captain Skjangarris's ship.

Essentially, the rest of the journey onboard The Southern Arrow has gone well, and everybody has arrived safely in the Scattersand Shoals.  Captain Fjorwek and his crew have departed, leaving your characters in the hands of Captain Skjangarris.

I'll put a description of Skjangarris and his boat / crew in the "Important NPCs" thread.  I'll also move the date along!

The first post of the next chapter will give an opportunity for your characters to ask Skjangarris some questions about the quest.  Then things will heat up again, and we'll be back into some action!   :D

Fu's idea of a roll call was a good one, and I'll start a new thread, (JG Roll Call), so that we all know who's still in the adventuring group.

in case you're still looking for inspiration concerning what awaits the characters in the Scattersand Shoals: there has been quite a bit of progress in that region on the Development Board recently, driven by the Bestiary and Herbarium entries of Smee and Tikanni Corazon. You might want to have a look at the Dragonbird, the Harmony Tree, and the Night Stalker (all recent threads in Bestiary or Herbarium).

I made a little assumption about the seating order in my last post. Together with Koka's first post in this chapter, this means that we're sitting around the table in the following order:

Fionn-Koka-Ylva-Fu-Royce.

Everybody else is undefined in terms of where they sit, but can't sit in between any of these five.

Hope it was all right to make that assumption!

I'm sorry for not posting for a while, I got into one of the best high schools in the USA (#26 - Rankings are based on SAT, ACT, and AP exam results), so my workload increased exponentially. I suppose I'll be able to post mostly on weekends. I hope you understand.

I'm doing a Post Grad course in Primary Education, Fu.  I love teaching and want to focus on the 5 - 11 age range.  Some of the modules are counted towards a Masters degree, though I won't have an MA at the end of it.  My main aim is to get Qualified Teacher Status.

Congratulations from me, too, Mallorix! I hope you'll enjoy your new school, even if it's a lot of work.

Treasure Island was one of my favourite stories when I was smaller. Actually, it's still one of my favourite stories.

I have position papers to write for Model UN, plus I have a biology project due Monday.

I really hope that next year I get into World Studies (2 hr. Limited admission class which is English + History) and study extra for the AP Exam instead of having to go to AP World (A challenging class with pages of homework every day) so that I can post more.

But that's next year. Plenty of time until I have to choose.

Okay, sorry for the general stagnation of the story; I still don't have internet access at home.   :buck:  Lots of messing about with a certain ISP has led me to cancel the contract and try a different provider.  So, all being well this time, I'll be back online next week.

I just added a section to the stickied posts; it's called "A Journey to the South" and introduces one of my other characters, Eric Kattaisson.  I know some of you have had the pleasure of meeting him in other stories.   :P

He'll be making an entry to the main story fairly soon.  The piece in "A Journey to the South" was just to give him a reason to be in the Scattersand Shoals.  Anyway, hope every one is well and ready for some swash-buckling!   :grin:

One thing, just a small suggestion.  As Eric is his own character and not an NPC, would not he be better portrayed writing posts under his own account, instead of written as a Yurie NPC?  Just an opinion, which need not carry any weight. :)  Just helps to set him apart as a separate entity.

I'm around and willing to play, but haven't posted since Skjangarris' last speech, because he directly addressed Rhia, Fionn and Ylva - and also because I've tended to be one of the first to reply in the past, and wanted to give others a chance. Now, after several weeks without an IC post, I'm beginning to wonder how many of those who answered the roll call are still around and willing to play?

Yurie, I don't know how busy you'll be in the near future, what with starting your university course - but once you've got internet at home and also some time, I wonder whether we should consider taking on new players? We've lost quite a few characters, and several people are looking for a story to play in. Maybe a handful of new characters would also enliven the story, and motivate players to post?

Brining in new people might mean more work for the moderators. If that's a problem, I'd be happy to help with playing an occasional NPC or so.

Just a suggestion, of course.

I'd been considering posting for a while, but as i think i was among the last to post beforehand i was reluctant. if nobody else doesm though, i'll post sometime in the next couple days.

I hope that the story gets active again. We need to prove, at least to ourselves, that this is worth more to us than video games. I personally feel like story is the most important aspect. I wouldn't be surprised if all the players have given up by now, though!  Still, I've left the story open for anybody who is still reading it.  Whoever wants to have a look through the captain's scope is more than welcome to do so.  I'll leave it up to you to decide what conclusions your character would come to regarding the speedy approach of Eric's ship.  All I'll say is that it looks like a normal merchant ship and is flying a Stormcloaks Guild flag, but there are tell-tale signs that this is a predator.  I guess it depends how much prior knowledge of sailing and pirate attacks your character has as to what conclusions they come to.

Oh, and the first school placement was great but intense, Fu.  It was a fairly challenging school with regards to behaviour management, but the kids were still lovely.  I'll be on the next placement just after Xmas.  Plenty to keep me busy in the meantime, though... :)

Your good captain master Yurie has ever so graciously given me permission to join your crew and set sail aboard this fine ship err, story, Jovloff's Gold. So, I suppose this is me long-windedly introducing myself to all you veteran players. Doubtless you all know me better around Santharia under a different name. Kyros is a character I've had kicking about unused for a wee while.

So, yes. Looks like you've got an arrogant, well-spoken, authority mistrusting and rather dandyish ex-pirate joining your numbers. Hopefully he won't be too insufferable, or cause too much trouble- though I can make no definite promises.

I'm really excited to be in a story again, especially one I've been following for so long,  and can't wait to get started. I've read through the whole story thus far and am working on an introductory post which should be up soonish, though the wretched thing keeps finding more things to say and is becoming longer and longer! Kyros has been recruited to join the treaure hunting party, I believe. He's on the Silent Tear already, I think, having boarded in Queen's Harbour, though has probably had little contact with the rest of the group yet. That's how I'm writing it at the moment, at least.

I'm very very much looking forward to playing and treasure hunting with you all :)

Phew, my absolutely ginourmous opening post is up! I hope it's all satisfactory. It ended up being around four times longer than I'd intended it to be :P It all felt so important when I was writing it. It seemed necessary to give Kyros firm grounding in terms of his current position and opinion and really flex my in-character muscles to be properly warmed up and ready to play as him, so to speak, but looking back I'm not so sure. Ah, well. Skipping to the end will tell you all you need to know about what Kyros has actually done in relation to the other characters.

Welcome aboard, Kyros!  Your opening post was a joy to read and I'm sure we'll have a lot of fun role-playing together.

I've left things fairly open in the story for the moment as I'd like to know what everyone would like to happen next.  I was thinking we could have a full on, action packed fight, a fairly sedate surrender, or a bit of a scuffle leading to a parley.  It really depends how much fighting you want to write.  The end result will be pretty much the same, however; no matter how hard your characters fight, Eric will win.  Sorry to crush any hope like that, but it's necessary for the story to develop properly.   ;)

So what do you think?  Blood and gore?  Or a negotiation?

My, my, what a blood thirsty lot!  Actually, I'm glad that you voted for a bit of action!  I'll get working on a post for Eric this week, to get the attack underway.  I'm back in school on placement now, so my time is being consumed by lesson planning, teaching and assessing, but I'll definitely make the time to get a post up soon.  It's great that we've got moving again, and every one is writing to a really high standard; I'd hate to lose the momentum!  Still, it's surprising how tiring teaching five-year-olds can be!  Bless 'em!   :)

Glad you liked it, fionn! Hope the follow-up is all right as well. It's fairly short (for me, at least :rolleyes:), but I wanted to keep things rolling. I'm really enjoying writing as Kyros, as well. I think it's probably because he's absolutely nothing like me. That's the fun of roleplaying, or indeed writing generally, I suppose. It lets you inhabit characters and places infinitely removed from your own experience.

Oh- and is fionn still holding Kyros's hand after he helped her up? I wasn't sure about that so I skirted around it.

Huh, so much for sunday! My workload has rather increased of late, and combined with some other RL troubles have sapped my energy and conspired to keep me from writing my post- so, sorry about that. Thankfully I've got a bit of enthusiasm back so should (fingers crossed!) have something up in the next few days.

I'm a tad sick, but I've finally gotten to posting.

I'm sorry for any discrepancies, I just read the posts as quickly as I could and  then wrote. I was not aware of Mallorix and Kyros being introduced before. If it was during the "telescope" scene (When the pirates were spotted), then I thought he was behind the group as a whole. Plus, when there's something as intense as a battle going on, you're not going to recognize someone you've seen only once before.

I hope that cleared anything up!

Just to say I haven't abandoned ship!  Just finished my second school placement so things have been hectic.  Should have some time to catch up and get a post sorted at some point tomorrow... :)

After reading your posts, Fu, I got the impression that at some point you'd actually been stuck by an arrow yourself!   :P  I hope that I'm wrong and that you're not writing from personal experience, though.  Still, good stuff wherever the inspiration comes from.  I think I've got one of those stupid imps in my head, too; it tends to tell me how I'm losing control of the class, writing a load of crap for my research and that I'm gonna fail my course!   :buck:  Still, I find giving it a good kick up the a**e keeps it in check.

Loved reading your post, too, Mallorix; I can picture myself on the doomed boat with arrows raining down around me!

And, as always, Fionn made me laugh!   :D

Got to say 'thanks' to our two archers, as well.  Not only have they given us some excellent writing to enjoy, but they've also done a good job of whittling down the pirates, and thus creating a need for willing or unwilling recruits to join them after the battle...

...but more on that later!  I've left the battle raging and fairly open.  If you want to get Fu moved into a safe position before the madness mentioned in my post kicks off then that's fine.  Or, if you prefer, he could still be lying on the deck when the pirates board.  Feel free to puppet the pirates and have fun fighting or trading insults with them.  At this point in the story I'd say make the most of the opportunity to write some exciting fight scenes.   :grin:  And there's no need for Ylva and Royce to feel left out of the action; I'm sure a few of those pesky pirates would want to nose around below decks.  All I ask is that Eric is left unmolested, as I need to get him to meet Skjangarris.  It might take him a little while to get there, though, as I enjoy writng fight scenes and will probably have him fight a few more marines on the way!

Nope, I never got hit by an arrow myself. I did get my hand broken by a thug once, though. Yurie, you've made me wonder whether unconsiously I drew on that experience while writing the recent Fu posts. I think I might have.

Anyway - Fionn and Mallorix, feel free to carry Fu away or not, just as you wish. He'll be limp and weak and despairing, and therefore unable to either resist or take any initiative himself.

Sure you can use it! In fact I've just made Ylva hand you the weapon to save time! Though it's quite a tricky weapon to visualize, the closest real life weapon I've found is the kukri.

Hello, all! :wave: Well... I'm back. Again. And in the process of catching up with the fight so far.

Really, it's shameful I've been gone so long from this story. Over the past year, half-year or so life has generally conspired to repeatedly throw things at me that keep me away from Santharia long enough that I grow out of the habit of stopping by. I really hate how I've become one of those people who appears and disappears from the boards randomly and mysteriously. I was in a pretty dark place in january, not much better in february, but now I'm more on the mend, I think, and in the mood to jump back into the fray, as it were.

But the thing is, whenever I come back, I realise how much I miss it here when I'm gone. Fingers crossed I'll manage to stay around for a good while (ie forever, preferably) before I drop off the face of the earth again!

But I'm rambling, as usual. And I'm sorry if my absence was in any way a nuisance for anyone.

First of all just want to say how much I enjoyed reading how things have been developing whilst I've been immersed in the wonderful world of essay writing... :P

Secondly, welcome back, Kyros!  Good to hear that you're feeling in a better place.   :)  As you'll be able to see, the pirates have been working their wickedness, and our brave bunch have been doing their best to ward them off.  I'm working on a post at the moment that will bring the madness to an end, but if you'd like to have a fight with any of the marauders feel free to put up a post to that effect.

Anyway, this fight should be coming to an end very soon...

I think it fair to say that now Captain Skjangarris has surrendered, the pirates will stop fighting and both sides will take the time to gather together to see what the two captains have agreed.

Sorry for lateness of post, I spent a long time trying to work out how to deal with Fu's arrow wound, but cauterizing would likely be a common method as it was in medieval RL times! I wonder what Fionn and Fu think of this idea, whether Fionn would agree, and no doubt the wizard might not be too happy about the burning part!

Cauterize away to your heart's content, as far as I am concerned! I thought from the beginning that Fu's wound was quite serious, and you can't have a serious wound without serious consequences. Feel free to puppet a bit during the operation, if you want/need. But I'm around for now and can play my part and post appropriate protests, wails, blackouts, and so forth.

And of course you're right: the wizard won't be happy!  :)

The good news is my exams are vanquished (the absence of which after about a month of solid revision is as strange as it is relieving, hah) so I’ll definitely have time and motivation to polish up the post I promised weeks back (I have it lurking half-finished somewhere or other). The bad news is I’m not going to have internet access for another week. In the interim, I’ll type something up for next weekend and adjust it then in lieu of any story-developments.

I hope everyone who's sitting or has been sitting exams do well.  I never did see how a two hour exam could do justice to years of education, but there you go!

Huzzah, I have internet access again and I've actually managed to post when I planned to for once!  I tried to avoid puppeting the sailors/pirates to much, or mentioning specifically how many were wounded or dead, the former because I didn't want to start god-modding too much :P and the latter because I wasn't too clear on how much damage was done in the skirmish or how long it actually was. Hope it's all right, as post exams, my brain still feels a bit mushy and writing coherently has become alarmingly tricky.

Thanks for the exam good-luck, all. I hope everyone else's were okay, too. The majority of mine felt like they went well. If only I didn't have to wait so long to find out if they actually did!

Regarding the story, I think it best if all of our players get on the main deck, so I'll post as Nikneth and have him cover the situation in the sick-bay.  Maybe we could puppet Koka a little by having her stay with Fu as well?

Well this has slowed down a bit. I'm still in the US until the  20^th of July, and then I'll be off to Bulgaria. Fortunately, I may be able to post  while there, as my Grandfather got an internet connection for his eightieth birthday.

Yes, it has been comatose for a while!  Anyway, I've finished my PGCE now so the pressure is off over the summer...but only a little because I've got loads of stuff to organise for September!  Still, I've managed to get a post done and will be able to give this story more attention.  Hopefully we'll get moving again... :)

As for the job, yes, I've managed to get a position teaching a class of Year 4 kids.  They seem a nice enough bunch but the sheer volume of work and responsibility that goes with it feels overwhelming at the moment.  I fully expect my first year teaching to be the hardest, so I'm preparing myself for it as well as I can.  Our history topic for the autumn term is ancient Egypt, so I'm looking at ways to link everything else to that; should be fun!  :)

It's not really up to me to answer your question, but I'll do it anway: in general I would say that players should feel free to post and have their character do whatever the character would do in the given situation, as long as it's within roleplaying rules and unless it contradicts some explicit agreement about the direction of the story plot. I, for one, would enjoy reading a post from you!

And posted! Hope it's all right. It mostly consists of Kyros dithering, stupidly proud creature that he is.

Hopefully I should be able to post regularly again, now I have more consistent access to a computer.

Oh, and I've really been enjoying Fu's fever dreams and general fits of delirium- lots of great imagery and ideas, powerfully expressed. Has he actually woken up now, or is he still in the cabin, just about to come round?

Okay, I realise that I've been neglecting this story and wouldn't be surprised if everyone has got fed up with me.  My full apologies to all.  The reason is quite simple, I started a new job as a teacher at the start of September and also moved house.  To be honest, it seems as though I was picked up by a tornado when I joined the school and my feet haven't touched solid ground since!  I've neglected just about every area of my life except work, including my family, and still have loads to do!  Anyway, it'll be half-term very soon so I'm hoping to get my head together and catch up with everything not work related over that week.  I've been told that the first half-term as a new teacher is always like this, and that I should have some more free time as the rest of the term progresses.

So, sorry once again, and thank you for your patience!   :)

I sent a PM to Yurie and Eric to inquire whether life will permit him to pick up Jovloff's Gold again in the near future. I think that the administration also contacted him with the same question. I would really like to continue this story.

I contacted the story moderators last week (1/14) but haven't heard back. If we move this story to the archive, we can still move it back up when the moderators return, can't we?

I would ask you please not to move this story to the archive. Please give the moderators some more time to respond, and give such players as are around and willing to continue some more time to rally and find a way of keeping this story alive. In contrast to other stories that have recently been moved to the archives, a post in Jovloff's Gold OOC has always got a reply, even though such posts have not, to my sadness and to others', engendered new IC posts in the last few months.

I understand the desire to have a 'clean' look of the forum. But please do consider whether having one more story within the "Structured Stories" category really is so damaging to the appearance as to justify removing it. I am concerned that moving Jovloff's Gold to the archives would send the wrong signal to players who have repeatedly expressed their willingness to wait until Yurie's busy time as a newly qualified teacher has calmed down and then to continue. You may read the most recent three pages of this OOC thread for documentation of this. I think that by moving the story to the archives, you would risk initiating a downward spiral that would do harm to the story, and ultimately to the board. 

Jovloff's Gold may seem like just another inactive story on the boards to you, but it is more to me, and I think to other players, too. Apart from my very personal attachment, I would argue that Jovloff's Gold overall has been a success so far, despite the recent lull. I would venture to say that during the last three years, taken together, Jovloff's Gold has been the second or third most active story on the board (behind Destiny, and maybe Thalambath's Heart). This is in marked contrast to some stories I have seen in the last three years, which have started promisingly, but have died within a few months.

I have tried to make this argument in the RPG Forum thread, but I was unable to keep up with the pace of discussion and decision there, partly due to my busy life, and partly due to the fact that the thread was moved to the Moderators' Forum where I was temporarily unable to see it. So I am repeating and elaborating my argument here.

I feel strongly about this, as you can tell. I wonder whether other Jovloff's Gold players feel the same?

I felt moved by Fu's impassioned plea on behalf of keeping Jovloff's Gold out of the archives to come out of my self imposed absence to add my voice to his. I have never had a character that was part of this story, however I have enjoyed following along with and reading their adventures.

In 2007 I started off my career as a teacher. It was a lot of hard work in the early days, preparing lesson plans and resources, attending to professional and personal development activities, meeting with parents, teaching the lessons, managing the classroom, providing appropriate discipline to myself and the children, attending to playground duties, assessing the student's work, and reporting back to the students, my supervisors, administration, parents and other stakeholders. Teaching ended up being a poor choice for me to pursue on a number of levels, however during that time I had to give it my full attention. I had to cut back on just about everything else I did, and even then there weren't enough hours for me to do all I had to do. I can only imagine what Eric is going through in his first year of teaching.

I believe that closing down a story that has had a successful time over the past few years, but which currently has a story mod engaged in a time consuming career would be sending the wrong message to the players, who, as Fu has suggested are keen to be still involved in the story and who are rather active in the OOC thread. Maybe in the time during which Eric is tied up with his career, something can be done to get a bit of IC action happening? Show him that people are interested in his story? So that when he is able to return he is able to once again take over the modship.

In my Star-Fleet group, when the GM or the CO of a ship has to leave for a while, or either is replaced, everyone else on that ship engages what is called 'side simming', which basically means getting IC action happening so that the ship doesn't die and get decommissioned/archived. These have ranged from having a party of some kind, using the holodeck (holodeck not a possibility in Santharia, I realise), visit the ship's lounge, seeing the doctor/counsellor, visiting a planet (such as Risa - once again not possible in Santharia), engaging in character development posts or something similar. Perhaps the players of Joloff's Gold could try something like that? Of course someone would need to decide what the characters would do (or someone could make an IC post and see who else follows up that post with an IC post of their own. Isn't that exactly how 'An Adventure in Black' started?

If, for example you do it in a second thread, you won't actually be interfering with the storyline that Eric has planned for you all, but it is still related to his story in a way, you are keeping yourselves occupied and Adventures of Caelereth appears active to new members. And of course, the players of Jovloff's Gold are showing Eric how much they are enjoying the story he was leading them on, in a much more vibrant way than simply posting such in OOC,

So there's a different thought for you ... please try not to move Jovloff's Gold to the archives.
