Ryldor listened to Sir Olpeg's concerns and became confused. Did he really have that little say? Was all of this opulence for show? And why does the servant seem more interested than either of these nobles?

"Well Sir, first let me say that it's not my intention to profit off of the Princess' disappearance. But Eresh's name is out there now. Also, the more people asking questions, the more likely the mystery will be solved. It's to everyone's benefit that the town grows. As for the woods, believe me I have no intention of going out there. I prefer a warm bed to a cold cot." Ryldor said. Or maybe I will go out there. Just for kicks. "As for Lady Bretha, why would I need to consult with her? I presumed the only person whose permission I would need was yours. And in any case, the bigger Eresh gets, the more likely her inn will be full. I doubt she'll mind." he said with a dismissive wave. "Besides, if you think it's a good idea, I'm sure she wouldn't dispute a decree from you."

Ryldor picked up the wine, motioned to the lord and lady's glasses to see if they would like more before refilling his own. Well, I'm sure I've given you a lot to think about and Lady Rivya is surely bored. So tell me. Do either of you have any interesting theories on the disappearance of poor Princess Nalaere… Oh. I'm sorry. I apologize if I brought up a sore subject. It just seems like the thing everyone wants to talk about."

Oh dearest Ryldor, dust thou know thy charm?; The clever smile soft upon thy face; Seem like a promise for to do no harm; Whilst I, enjoying thy tender grace; Should gaze in admiration at thy eyes; As azure as where highest heaven lay; Reflections of the clearest, truest skies; They seem to melt my very heart away!; And if thy lovely words were not as true; As thine eyes blue, still I'd believe thy claim; Of magedom. Magic turned a rosy hue; My cheeks. A spell thou cast upon this dame!; Thou art a most capricious scoundrel, yet; The sweetest gentlemen I've ever met.; ~ Rayne Avalotus

Sir Olpeg smirked. "Well Ryldor, you see, there's a difference between the big cities, and the small ... areas." He took another sip of wine. "When a place is ... small, and everyone knows everyone else, it's good to take care of your friends."

Sir Olpeg leaned forward towards Ryldor, and from the corner of his eye Ryldor could see Lady Rivya rolling her eyes, as if this was a much repeated routine of Sir Olpeg's and what he was about to say. "I will be upfront with you Ryldor, since you seem to be a very intelligent man and shrewd merchant. Now," his eyes glinted, "Bretha owns the only inn in Eresh for a reason -- no one else is allowed to do so besides her. Bretha ... uh ... contributes 25% of profits to ... myself ... the barony, rather." Sir Olpeg had a smug grin on his face now.

"Now, it would be very, very easy to let you open another inn here Ryldor, a very simple matter indeed. But, that very simple matter is dependant on how much you are willing to ... contribute."

Sir Olpeg sat straight up and leaned back in his chair again and waited for a response from Ryldor. The matter of disappearing princesses were of less importance than the profits he could stand to gain from this ... "transaction" ... if it was successful.

Someone else seem to be intensively interested in Ryldor's reply. The manservant had edged closer to the table, an expectant gleam in his eyes. Lady Rivya merely daintily nibbled at the dessert at the end of her dessert fork, it was hard to tell whether she was listening, pretending not to listen, or not listening at all.

A broad smile appeared on the elf’s face. Finally. ”Well Sir, I fully appreciate the need for good friends. Indeed, I was hoping to count you among the friends I've made here in Eresh. Now that you mention it, I will still be doing a lot of traveling. I’ll certainly need a… partner, shall we say, in my inn, were I given your ok to open one. Maybe someone looking for an opportunity without the hassle of having to be involved in the messy details. Would have any interest in such an arrangement Sir? ”

After the Lord’s comments, Ryldor straightened himself and looked at the nobles. ”Well the hour is getting late. I’ve had a lovely time dining with you this evening. I hope you’ll give strong consideration to my offer. I’ll be staying at the Rusik for a few more days if you need to reach me.” The elf shook Sir Olpeg’s hand and kissed Lady Rivya’s. A deep bow and he left, escorted by the manservant.

Once alone in the antechamber, Ryldor turned to the servant and said ”How do you think I did? It seemed like you were the most interested person in the room. Why is that?” Ryldor paused. ”Perhaps I’ll need someone else to… help maintain my interests. Know of anyone looking for a few extra sans for doing some work discreetly?”

Sir Olpeg listened to Ryldor's with much renewed interest this time. Ah, he's a shrewd one, that's for sure. But he knew that if he played his cards carefully, if would be another good amount of money making its way to his coffers. Yes, it was too good an opportunity to pass up indeed.

Smiling benevolently, Sir Olpeg spoke, "Well now, Ryldor, it seems that we are both men of understanding indeed. A very ... tempting proposal that you have made. I am indeed enticed by it." He fllashed another bright smile, and Lady Ryva seem to just look away from the table as he went on, "But i shall need to talk to some of my ... shall we say, associates, first. I will have someone contact you at the in the morrow, Ryldor, if this proposal of yours is ... as pleasing to them as it is to myself." Sir Olpeg's smile turned into a fine line grin.

”Well the hour is getting late. I’ve had a lovely time dining with you this evening. I hope you’ll give strong consideration to my offer. I’ll be staying at the Rusik for a few more days if you need to reach me.”

Sir Olpeg stood and shook Ryldor's hand vigorously, "Yes, yes, i shall have someone contact you at the Rusik, that is ... good to know." Lady Rivya looked at Ryldor in a questioning way, as if there was something that she wanted to say to him  before he left, but it never got said.

Escorting Ryldor to the antechamber was the manservant who had been present in the dining room all along.

”How do you think I did? It seemed like you were the most interested person in the room. Why is that?”

The manservant scoffed as if to deny his interest, and as if annoyed by Ryldor's observance. But the next question that Ryldor directed piqued the manservant's interest indeed, as was evident by the furious glint in his eyes.

”Perhaps I’ll need someone else to… help maintain my interests. Know of anyone looking for a few extra sans for doing some work discreetly?”

The manservant shifted his weight from one foot to the other, looked piercingly at Ryldor, and then decided to speak, in a low and hushed voice, "Yer go to the Rusik's back door ... leading to the kitchen ... at 21 Bells t'night. Say Rofer sent yer." He then shrugged, as if what he just said had never been said, "And now, sir, the Lord and Lady would like to have some quiet rest for the evening, and i bid you good evening."

If you want to go "exploring" somewhere else or don't want to take up Rofer's (the manservant) "offer", indicate so in your next post. If you want to go straight to what Rofer just suggested, post in the Tavern Kitchen thread, and assume that you are walking up to the backdoor of the tavern (which leads into the kitchen) and you are outside of the tavern waiting. For the latter, your time will be forwarded to 21 Bells.
