"I... I come from Ximax", - started Manymeals: "A big citeh far away. A ma-gick-al siteh! But that's a long story. Currently I'm instivega... ivegista... investigating what's going on in this shack. There's my pack and an elven ladeh an' a boy out there waiting for me. I'm very important, you see", - Manymeals tried to look important.

He watched the big feet go by: "Who's that? And why does she? he? it? make such weird sounds? You could almost think it's a stuttering rat".

SmoothFur looked at Manymeals with much intrigue and curiosty. Manymeals spoke very ... differently from the rats that she had known all her life. She felt an urge to find out more about Manymeals. And what was this about a whole pack and a boy (SmoothFur was really awed when Manymeals mentioned that a human was actually waiting for him instead of trying to snap him up and place him into a vat of boiling water) waiting outside for Manymeals?? This was a really different rat. SmoothFur wanted to find out more.

"Who's that? And why does she? he? it? make such weird sounds? You could almost think it's a stuttering rat."

SmoothFur squirkled as if chuckling, "Well, she is nice. I don't know who she is, but there have been people who came here before and called her 'Kaestrhil' or something like that. She drops food around all the time. She sees us but doesn't chase us around. We like her."

SmoothFur looked Manymeals up and down, left and right, "Where is this Ximax? Is it the name of a clearing in the woods? Are you from the woods too? Why are you so important?" SmoothFur went up close to Manymeals and gently flicked her tail against him, as if caressing Manymeals in friendliness and warmth.

[Cacunai]

With speed born of desperation and long-tense muscles, Cacunai threw herself into a low crouch to avoid the huge bear's paw. Though he appeared to be rather stupid, all animals had some defense mechanism - and Bahran was not one to show any reservation with his strength. Mokmyr, you just had to throw us a bear, didn't you. Couldn't have sent a chipmunk or something, eh? she thought (Mokmyr's one of the many gods she believes in).

Tisn't my fault there are mice in this wood, she shouted. Calm yourself, bear!

"Seek then speak, that is the way of the witchwoman.."

Manymeals listened to SmoothFur, trying to calm down and pay attention to the words. Squeaks.

So, the owner of the feet was a she, and she was nice. The boy should be glad to hear that, Manymeals guessed.
And there were another rats in the shack. He remembered the last night and hoped, their manners were a bit better than those of the camp rats.

"Where is this Ximax? Is it the name of a clearing in the woods? Are you from the woods too? Why are you so important?"

"A clearing, yes, yes..." - said Manymeals not knowing how to explain what a city was: "A large clearing. And I... I travel. With my pack and the boy, and the elf... Why I'm so important? Weeeell..." - Manymeals pondered why he was so important: "I was the only one who dared to go here. Because there was a... a..." - he thought of the most dangerous monster that he knew: "There was a bear outside! Yes, a big angry bear!"

SmoothFur listened with growing awe at what Manymeals said. Big clearing! A human and a elf! SmoothFur was certain that Manymeals was the leader of his pack -- courageous, well-spoken err ... squeaken, and very knowledgable indeed. When Manymeals spoke of the bear though, SmoothFur broke out churkling (that's a rat's version of a chuckle).

"The bear is nice! He doesn't hurt us! He runs away from us!" SmoothFur continued churkling gaily, "He makes good friends with the woman! They talk funny together!"

SmoothFur flicked her tail gently over Manymeals again, and probed her pink nose against Manymeal's, "Will you take me to see your pack, and this human of yours?"  

Hold me.
Soothe me.
Love me.
Save me from my RAGE.

[Bahran the bear]

Bahran lost his balance upon missing the small elif, and nearly hit the ground. He looked up from the now semi-crouched position on the ground, up to the little face of the lady-thing.

"But mousey come from the air, behind you!" Bah lowly growled. Just then, he noticed a little boy, standing apparently behind where the elif was.

"You come to be mean to crazy-lady?" Bahran roared at the little boy, ignoring Lady-thing now.

Talking bears, can't live with 'em, could do without 'em.

Yerun was alarmed when the bear started to strike his large paw at Cacunai, but thankfully Cacunai deftly avoided the paw while Yerun took several steps back in fear, almost running off if he thought that he would survive alone in the woods surroundings.

Yerun's face turned a deathly white as the bear roared at him, "You come to be mean to crazy-lady?"

Yerun whimpered and cowered by Cacunai, trying to hide his figure behind hers.

Manymeals' face went plae under his fur. There actually was a bear outside! He started shuddering. "A bear! A bear! It's going to eat me, I know it!" - he screamed inside. Only the flicking of SmoothFur's tail comforted him a bit.

"Will you take me to see your pack, and this human of yours?"

Manymeals hesitated: "Uh... well..." "There's a bear outside! A bear outside! "I... ah... okay. I guess. You sure the b-b-bear is nice? I mean, I don't want... don't want... don't want you get hurt, that's it."

[Cacunai]

The child is under my protection, and neither of us want to be mean to the crazy lady, bear.

She spoke with cool composure that she did not feel. Even Cacunai, the mighty traveler who walked the roads of hunger and betrayl, who heard and understood the wind, even she was frightened. She shouldn't be. It was only a bear, nothing more, and a rather stupid one at that. Why should she be afraid? The other half of her spoke up with an air of smug confidence. It's that boy. Your instincts tell you to protect him. Told you this would happen!

@Fluffy, Cacunai & Bahran:

"The child is under my protection, and neither of us want to be mean to the crazy lady, bear."

Yerun nodded profusely at Cacunai's words. As he cowered ever closer to Cacunai, he felt the stiffness of the dirk that Cacunai had gave him earlier rub against his arm. Hoping that he would not have to use it, Yerun reached inside his jacket and placed a shaking palm on its hilt anyway.

Meanwhile, in the shack:

"I... ah... okay. I guess. You sure the b-b-bear is nice? I mean, I don't want... don't want... don't want you get hurt, that's it."

SmoothFur briefly stood on both her hind legs. She was excited. All her life, she had never heard of a rat ordering a human around (her rodent imagination had taken over now, dreaming up grand scenarios of rodent grandeur), it was usually the other way around, and usually into boiling water or spiky painful things.

"Crrrrrr! Let's go! Let's go!" SmoothFur nipped gently at Manymeal's tail, indicating for him to hurry along now and see the nice big bear who was swiping his deadly clawed paws around.

SmoothFur pranced out of the shack, and saw, just like Manymeals had said, a pointy-eared human standing protectively over another cowering human, with the bear throwing a nasty tantrum at both of them.

SmoothFur ran up to the bear, and hopped onto one of his hind legs planted on the ground. Then nipping the bear to get his attention, SmoothFur squeaked loudly and piercingly in quick succession, saying in rat-speak, "Bear! Go away!"

[Bahran the bear]

The bear glared at the elif for a few seconds after she spoke.

"Lady-thing not lie to Bah-" But suddenly he stopped. He felt something climb onto his leg, and slowly looked down at it.

"MOUSEY!" He roared, nearly jumping out of his skin. He bolted for the shack of the crazy-lady, not caring if the mouse was still touching him.

"The mousey try to kill me again!" He roared, in a frightened sounding roar, at the crazy-lady. He was standing just outside the doorway, hoping she heard him.

Talking bears, can't live with 'em, could do without 'em.

Manymeals stood near SmoothFur and watched with astonishment how she made the bear run away: "The beast was really afraid of her!", - he thought.
"Yeah, run, bear, run! And don't you try anything funny!" - Manymeals squeaked loud.

Out of Yerun and Cacunai's pockets the rest of the pack showed up. They couldn't beleive their eyes. Speech... ah... squeakless they tried to understand whether they were dreaming or not.

The woman within the shack heard the commotion outside -- who could miss the ear-shattering roar of a terrified bear -- and plodded out to see what was happening.

To Cacunai and Yerun, out walked the diminutive figure of what seemed to be a middle aged woman. It seemed to be a middle-aged woman because it could also be otherwise construed as some sort of feathered furry human of some indistinguishable gender -- an assortment of odds and end seem to be what was composing the garb of the woman, pretty much like how the shack had been "dressed up". The woman walked with an odd gait, and had the various odds and ends on her clanging and banging into each other, making all sorts of noises from tinkles to quipples (yes, exactly: indescribable).

Looking at her surroundings with an odd puzzled yet amused look on her face, the woman first turned to the bear, who was shaking in fear, and spoke to the bear in a concerned tone like a mother to a child, "Chuchulop treepni??" Then noticed Cacunai and Yerun standing close together, and squinted at both of them, "Mwuitlfer gutoohepeplof??"

Down where the bear had stood before scooting over to the shack, Smoothfur stared in awe and silence at the elf and human that belonged to Manymeals.

[Bahran the bear]

Bahran's eyes widened as he listened to crazy-lady speak.

"But... but..." The bear stuttered. "Mousey tried to attack me again!" The bear looked like he was a five year old that had just been told that he couldn't have any candy... only a bear five old that had just been told that he couldn't have any candy.

He looked at Lady-thing, and frowned, sort of.
"Bahran is sorry Lady-thing," He frowned again, and glanced back at Crazy-lady.

"She wants to know what you doing here," He sighed and glanced back at crazy-lady, looking hurt.

[Cacunai]

Shooting disbelieving glances at the bear, acting like a petulant child, Cacunai edged closer to the hut, and the woman who had emerged from it. She tore her gaze from Bahran and managed to conjure up a bright smile for the woman.

Your gatekeeper is quite efficient... if I may introduce myself? I am Cacunai, a seer of the tree and the wave, and this is Yerun. We've come to speak to you. We mean you no harm.

She tactfully made no mention of Yerun's profession... this woman, Kestrel no doubt, probably didn't like the townspeople much if they treated her as the guard had. She certainly seemed sane enough, if a bit odd. A small part of Cacunai's brain set itself to the task of trying to decipher the woman's odd language. It had to be a languge of some sort if the bear could understand it.
